PURPOSE: To report on iodine-125 ((125)I) interstitial irradiation in the treatment of brain stem tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two patients with brain stem tumors were treated with CT- and image fusion-guided (125)I stereotactic brachytherapy. RESULTS: By March 2003, the patients had been followed up for 47 and 13 months, respectively. In case 1, the tumor volume was 1.98 cm(3) on the control CT, indicating a 65.5% shrinkage as compared to a target volume of 5.73 cm3 at the time of brachytherapy. In case 2, shrinkage was more distinct. After irradiation, the cyst volume was 0.16 cm(3) on the control MRI, indicating a 97.4% shrinkage as compared to a target volume of 6.05 cm(3) at the time of brachytherapy, i. e., the metastasis had virtually disappeared. CONCLUSION: CT- and image fusion-guided (125)I stereotactic brachytherapy can be performed during the biopsy session. The procedure can be well planned dosimetrically and is surgically precise. 相似文献
The escape efficiency of two closely related species of frogs,Odontophrynus cultripes(2n=22) and the tetraploidO. americanus (4n=44), were compared in a shuttle box and under simulated naturalistic conditions.O. americanus was generally superior toO. cultripes, and females tended to outperform males within both species. The relative inefficiency ofO. cultripes escape behavior was examined in light of the animals' having an elaborate, passive defense mechanism in the form of well-marked venom glands. Escape efficiency was highly variable in both species. Possessing twice the amount of DNA, the tetraploid behavioral variation was paradoxically less than that of the diploid, but compatible with what has been found for morphological characters in other organisms. This research was carried out at the Instituto Butantan with the support of ongoing grants from the Brazilian CNPq, FAPESP, FEDIB, and PNUD while the first author was a visiting professor in the Departamento de Genética Humana, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade de São Paulo, under the auspices of the Programa Multinacional de Genética, Organization of American States. 相似文献
The mutation causing myotonic dystrophy (DM) has recently beenidentified as an unstable CTG trinucleotide repeat located inthe 3' untranslated region of a gene encoding for a proteinwith putative serine-threonine protein kinase activity. In thisreport we present the genomic sequences of the human and murineDM kinase gene. A comparison of these sequences with each otherand with known cDNA sequences from both species, led us to predicta translation initiation codon, as well as determine the organizationof the DM kinase gene. Several polymorphisms within the humanDM kinase gene have been identified, and PCR assays to detecttwo of these are described. The complete sequence and characterizationof the structure of the DM kinase gene, as well as the identificationof novel polymorphisms within the gene, represent an importantstep in a further understanding of the genetics of myotonicdystrophy and the molecular biology of the gene. 相似文献
While diffuse mesangial sclerosis is traditionally described as being the glomerulopathy of Denys–Drash syndrome (DDS), the podocyte proliferative lesions may be overlooked in these DDS cases. In the present study, an evolving process is extrapolated from a selected case of DDS that demonstrated glomerulopathy with conspicuous podocyte proliferation. The observation that podocytes express proliferation markers (Ki67, proliferating-cell nuclear antigen and topoisomerase II) in non-proliferative, mature-looking glomeruli suggests an initial pathogenic act to activate or to keep podocytes from quiescence. The subsequent proliferation of podocytes is in keeping with downregulation of WT1 and cyclin kinase inhibitors of p16 and p21. The emergence of cytokeratin-positive cells in glomeruli that show typical mesangial sclerosis implies elimination of podocytes and replacement with tubular and/or parietal epithelial cells. The final scene of evolving glomerulopathy displays apoptosis and expression of Fas-L and Bax in sclerotic mesangial lesions, which eventually end up with global sclerosis. This novel concept of DDS glomerulopathy implies complex molecular mechanisms involved in glomerular injury. 相似文献
This report describes a family with mental retardation in two brothers. The pedigree is consistent with either X-linked mental retardation or autosomal recessive inheritance. The clinical features consist of coarse face, prominent lower lip, large testes, and obesity. This same constellation of findings was observed in a family with X-linked mental retardation (XLMR) reported by Shashi et al. [2000: Am J Hum Genet 66:469-479]. Furthermore, haplotype analysis was consistent with localization of the Shashi XLMR syndrome in Xq26-q27. Thus, the family likely represents a second occurrence of the Shashi XLMR syndrome. 相似文献
Emotion dysregulation and intimacy problems are theoretically underpinned correlates of hypersexuality (i.e., uncontrollable sexual urges, fantasies, and behaviors resulting in distress and impairment in different areas of functioning), but the directionality of these associations has not been established, as work in this area has relied on cross-sectional designs. Moreover, although hypersexuality may have significant adverse effects on romantic relationships and approximately half of treatment-seeking individuals are in a relationship, prior studies almost exclusively involved samples of men, regardless of their relationship status. The aim of the present study was to examine the directionality of associations between both partners’ emotion dysregulation, physical (i.e., partnered sexual frequency) and relationship intimacy, and hypersexuality using a longitudinal, dyadic framework. Self-reported data of 267 mixed-sex couples (Mage_men?=?29.9 years, SD?=?8.2; Mage_women?=?27.7 years, SD?=?6.7) at baseline (T1) and six-month follow-up (T2) were analyzed using a crossed-lagged model within an actor–partner interdependence framework. Prior greater emotion dysregulation (T1) in both men and women was associated with their own later greater hypersexuality (T2). Women’s prior greater hypersexuality (T1) was associated with their later lower relationship intimacy (T2). Lower levels of intimacy were not significantly associated with later hypersexuality. No partner effects were found in relation to hypersexuality. Findings suggest that men and women may use sexual behaviors to cope with negative emotions, which could, in turn, lead to hypersexuality. Intimacy problems did not precede hypersexuality, although women’s hypersexuality may reduce their own relationship intimacy over time.
The central role of T cells in antitumor immunity is well established. However, tumor progression, often seen in the presence of substantial lymphocytic infiltration, suggests that these T cells are not capable of mounting an effective immune response to control tumor growth. Evidence has accumulated that T lymphocytes infiltrating human neoplasms are functionally defective, incompletely activated, or anergic. Therefore, when characterizing the immune competent cells within lymphoid infiltrates of tumors, it is important to assess their activation state. We investigated the expression of two T-cell activation markers, interleukin 2 receptor alpha (CD25) and OX40 (CD134), by immunohistochemistry in primary cutaneous melanoma samples of 76 patients and analyzed it in relation to tumor stage and tumor progression (>5 years follow-up), as well as to patients' survival. We found that the degree of infiltration by CD25(+) and intratumoral OX40(+) lymphocytes showed a tendency to decrease in thicker melanomas. The frequency of samples with high numbers of peritumoral CD25(+) and OX40(+) cells was significantly lower (P = 0.0009 and P = 0.0087, respectively) in melanomas developing distant visceral metastases, compared with nonmetastatic or lymph node metastatic tumors. For both activation markers studied, high peritumoral densities were associated with longer survival by univariate analysis (P = 0.0028 and P = 0.0255 for CD25 and OX40, respectively), whereas peritumoral OX40(+) lymphocyte infiltration had an impact on survival also in multivariate analysis (P = 0.035). The results suggest that the presence of lymphocytes expressing the T-cell activation markers CD25 or OX40 shows correlation with tumor progression as well as with patients' survival in cutaneous malignant melanoma. 相似文献
