Osteoma is a benign tumour consisting of mature bone tissue. It is an uncommon lesion that occurs mainly in the bones of the craniofacial complex. Only a few cases involving the condylar process have been reported. An osteoma of the left condyle causing limited mouth-opening in a 32-year-old Malaysian Chinese female is reported here to alert the practitioner to consider this lesion as a diagnostic possibility in instances of trismus or limited-mouth opening.  相似文献

Samples of resting and stimulated whole saliva and stimulated parotid saliva were collected from 40 young adults. One week later, after 48 h on a standardized diet without oral hygiene, all available plaque was collected for dry weighing. An inverse relationship was found between the 'free' lysozyme concentration in stimulated parotid saliva and plaque dry weight (r = -0.46, p less than 0.01). There were no other statistically significant correlation coefficients between concentrations of individual salivary constituents and plaque dry weight. However, cluster analysis of constituents in resting whole saliva revealed three groups of subjects with different salivary profiles, and in particular with different concentrations of both IgA and hypothiocyanite. Subsequent analysis revealed differences in plaque dry weight between the groups, demonstrating the potential biological significance of cluster membership based on salivary factors.  相似文献

Cerebral cortex development undergoes a variety of processes, which provide valuable information for the study of the developmental mechanism of cortical folding as well as its relationship to brain structural architectures and brain functions. Despite the variability in the anatomy–function relationship on the higher‐order cortex, recent studies have succeeded in identifying typical cortical landmarks, such as sulcal pits, that bestow specific functional and cognitive patterns and remain invariant across subjects and ages with their invariance being related to a gene‐mediated proto‐map. Inspired by the success of these studies, we aim in this study at defining and identifying novel cortical landmarks, termed gyral peaks, which are the local highest foci on gyri. By analyzing data from 156 MRI scans of 32 macaque monkeys with the age spanned from 0 to 36 months, we identified 39 and 37 gyral peaks on the left and right hemispheres, respectively. Our investigation suggests that these gyral peaks are spatially consistent across individuals and relatively stable within the age range of this dataset. Moreover, compared with other gyri, gyral peaks have a thicker cortex, higher mean curvature, more pronounced hub‐like features in structural connective networks, and are closer to the borders of structural connectivity‐based cortical parcellations. The spatial distribution of gyral peaks was shown to correlate with that of other cortical landmarks, including sulcal pits. These results provide insights into the spatial arrangement and temporal development of gyral peaks as well as their relation to brain structure and function.

Antioxidant activity, free radical scavenging activity and phenolic content of red cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata rubra), Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa pekinensis var cylindrica), green cabbage (Brassica oleracea var capitata), mustard cabbage (Brassica juncea var rugosa) and Chinese white cabbage (Brassica rapa var chinensis), grown in Malaysia, were evaluated. Red cabbage had the highest antioxidant activity and phenolic content compared to the other cruciferous vegetables studied (p < 0.05). The contributions of all cruciferous vegetables to the antioxidant activity was >79%. The radical scavenging activity was in the order of Chinese white cabbage > red cabbage > mustard cabbage > Chinese cabbage > green cabbage. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the means of scavenging activity observed between cabbage, Chinese cabbage and Chinese mustard. Phenolic content was significantly different (p < 0.05) among all the cruciferous vegetables studied, and was in the order of red cabbage > Chinese white cabbage > green cabbage > Chinese cabbage >mustard cabbage. The study indicated that red cabbage possessed the highest antioxidant capacity and phenolic compounds concentration among all the cruciferous vegetables studied.  相似文献

We report a 20-year-old woman with continuous abnormal muscle activity syndrome in which pharmacological blockade of different sites of the motor unit demonstrates a peripheral nerve origin for the abnormal muscle activity. The case showed no markers of autoimmune disease. A rapid recovery after high dose i.v. methylprednisolone was observed supporting the hypothesis of an autoimmune pathogenesis.  相似文献

Introduction: Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) are one of the most common complains of the early pregnancy period and are bothersome for pregnant women. Some prefer to use herbal medicine instead of chemical agents.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to compare the effects of ginger, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and placebo for the treatment of NVP.

Method: The study was performed as a triple blind clinical trial on pregnant women suffering mild to moderate NVP between 6 and 16 weeks of pregnancy. In these women ginger, 500?mg twice daily, vitamin B6 40?mg twice daily and placebo twice daily were administered for 4?d. Rhodes questionnaire was used for evaluation of the severity of symptoms. The severity of NVP was evaluated 24?h before entering the study and up to 4 d after using medications and results were compared among the three groups.

Results: Seventy-seven women finished the study (28 in the Ginger group, 26 in the B6 group, and 23 in the placebo group). The women of the three groups did not have significant differences according to age, gestational age, parity, and severity of each symptom before treatment and educational status. Total score of Rhodes questionnaire for nausea was decreased significantly in three groups after treatment. (p?p?=?.012, and p?=?.03 for ginger, vitamin B6, and placebo, respectively.) Also total score of Rhodes questionnaire for vomiting was decreased in three groups (p?=?.03 for ginger, p?=?.02 for B6, and p?=?.04 for placebo). Ginger and vitamin B6 could reduce the severity of all items of Rhodes questionnaire significantly; however, placebo was significantly effective only on the frequency of nausea, intensity of vomiting and frequency of retching. Ginger and vitamin B6 were more effective than placebo (p?=?.039 and p?=?.007, respectively); however, total score of Rhodes did not show significant difference between ginger and vitamin B6 (p?=?.128). Ginger was more effective for nausea (intensity and distress) and distress of vomit.

Conclusion: Ginger is more effective than placebo for the treatment of mild to moderate NVP and is comparable with vitamin B6.
