AIM:To investigate the distribution of nestin-positive cells in pterygium, as well as the relationship between nestin-positive cells and proliferative cells in the pathogenesis of pterygium.METHODS:Nine pterygium specimens and 5 normal conjunctiva specimens were investigated. All explanted specimens were immediately immersed in 5-Ethynyl-2’-deoxyuridine, and were subjected to hematoxylin and eosin staining, as well as immunostaining to detect nestin.RESULTS:Small sub-populations of nestin-expressing cells in both normal and pterygial conjunctiva epithelium were found. These were located at the superficial layer of the epithelium, and were significantly increased (P=0.007) and spread out in the pterygial conjunctiva epithelium, even though these cells were mitotically quiescent.CONCLUSION:In pterygium, more nestin-positive cells were present at the superficial layer of the epithelium. With growing scientific evidence that nestin plays an important role in defining various specialized cell types, such as stem cells, cancer cells and angiogenic cells, further investigations on the roles of nestin-expressing cells in pterygium may help to uncover the mechanisms of initiation, development and the prognosis of this disease.  相似文献

Aims:

To evaluate the efficacy of repeated bevacizumab injection in rotational conjunctival flap surgery versus rotational conjunctival flap with adjunctive mitomycin C (MMC) or rotational conjunctival flap alone.

Materials and Methods:

Ninety eyes of 90 patients who underwent primary pterygium surgery with rotational flap were evaluated. Patients were randomly assigned to undergo conjunctival rotational flap alone (Group A) or conjunctival rotational flap with either 0.02% MMC application (Group B) or adjunctive subconjunctival 2.5 mg/0.1 ml bevacizumab injection (Group C). Each group consisted of 30 eyes. Recurrence rates at 9 months were evaluated.

Results:

There were no statistically significant differences in mean size of the pterygium across the limbus in terms of length (P > 0.5). The recurrence rates at 9 months were 26.6% (n = 8) in Group A, 13.3% (n = 4) in Group B, and 10% (n = 3) in Group C. The recurrence rates in Group B and C were significantly lower than in Group A (P =0.1806). The recurrence rates were similar in Group B and C (P > 0.05).

Conclusions:

Subconjunctival bevacizumab injection may decrease the recurrence rate of primary pterygium surgery with rotational conjunctival flap. Further studies with a larger population and longer follow-up period are needed to supplement this study.  相似文献

Background:

Pterygium is an ocular surface disorder with prevalence rates ranges from 0.3% to 29% in different parts of the world. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been detected in increased amounts in pterygium epithelium, compared with normal conjunctiva. Bevacizumab is a recombinant, humanized anti-VEGF antibody suggested as a possible adjunctive therapy for pterygium excision that appears to have a role in prevention of recurrence. We conducted this study to evaluate the role of subconjunctival bevacizumab in primary pterygium surgery in Indian patients.

Methods:

In this randomized prospective clinical study, the patients were randomized into two groups of 30 patients each. Study group received 1.25 mg/0.05 ml subconjunctival bevacizumab 1 week before pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograft. Control group received 1.25 mg (0.05 ml) subconjunctival normal saline 1 week prior to pterygium surgery with conjunctival autograft. Patients were followed up at day 1, day 7, 1 month and 3 months. The main outcome measures were morphology of pterygium after injection, intra-operative ease, recurrence of pterygia, and any complications.

Results:

After giving bevacizumab, there was statistically significant improvement in grade, color intensity, size of pterygium, and symptoms of patients. Intra-operatively, less bleeding was observed by the surgeon. No statistically significant difference regarding reduction in astigmatism, improvement of visual acuity, and complications were observed in two groups. Recurrence was noted in five patients (8.33%) in total study population at the end of 3 months. It was present in two patients (6.67%) in Group A and three patients (10%) in Group B.

Conclusion:

Single preoperative administration of subconjunctival injection bevacizumab given 1 week before the pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft decreases the vascularity of newly formed blood vessels, hence may decrease recurrence rate though not in our study.  相似文献

AIM:Toevaluate the recurrence andcomplicationsafter bare sclera resection (BSR) combined with mitomycin C (MMC) treatment and/or autograft limbus conjunctiva (ALC) in the surgery for pterygium.METHODS:Meta-analysis was used to evaluate the differences in patient outcomes between BSR of pterygium with or without MMC and/or ALC. All included studies were randomized trials of patients with pterygium who received BSR followed by MMC and/or ALC in the surgery. The recurrence of pterygium and other complications resulting from different treatments were extracted for analysis.RESULTS:Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. The recurrence of pterygium with intraoperative (IO) MMC was higher than that with ALC (OR=2.38,95% confidence interval 1.45-3.91, I2=29%). Postoperative MMC resulted in an incidence of recurrence similar to that of ALC (OR=0.66, 95% confidence interval 0.30-1.42, I2=0%), and IO MMC treatment in combination with ALC produced similar patient outcomes to ALC alone (OR=0.41, 95% confidence interval 0.16-1.01, I2=16%). Other complications such as punctate epitheliopathy, scleral thinning and ischemia, irritation and persistent epithelium defect, were more common in patients in the MMC group as compared to those treated with ALC.CONCLUSION:The recurrence of pterygium with BSR followed by ALC is lower than that of BSR followed by MMC, and the incidence of other complications is lower. While ALC is a more effective strategy for treating pterygium, the quality of the ALC transplant should be considered when the patient has a history of glaucoma.  相似文献

AIM: To study the effect of troglitazone on primary culture human pterygium fibroblasts (HPF). METHODS: Cell viability loss and apoptosis were quantified by cell counting kit-8, AnnexinV-FITC/PI double staining, caspases activity test and western blotting. Flow cytometry was used to detect mitochondrial membrane potential. RESULTS: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) was positively expressed in pterygium specimens (n=5). Troglitazone showed dose-dependent inhibition of cell survival, induced phospholipids redistribution, activated caspase-3, -9, and altered mitochondrial potential. Western blot assay demonstrated the increase of Bax/Bcl-2 protein ratio. CONCLUSION: Troglitazone induced apoptosis of HPF through a mitochondrial-dependent pathway.  相似文献

Background

Pterygium is a condition characterized by epithelial overgrowth of the cornea, inflammatory cell infiltration and an abnormal extracellular matrix accumulation. Chronic UV exposure is considered as a pathogenic factor of this disease. Proteasome is an intracellular multi-subunit protease complex that degrades intracellular proteins. Among proteasome subunits the β5 (PSMB5), bearing chymotrypsin-like activity. It is considered as the main proteasome subunit and its expression is mediated by Nrf2-ARE pathway in many cell types. This study investigates the expression of PSMB5 in pterygium and the effect of UVB irradiation on its expression and activity in pterygium fibroblasts.

Methods

Normal conjunctival and pterygium specimens were obtained from the bulbar conjunctiva of patients undergoing cataract surgery and from patients with pterygium undergoing surgical removal of primary tissue, respectively. Fibroblasts were isolated upon treatment of specimens with clostridium collagenase. The expression of PSMB5 and Nrf2 in tissues and cells was ascertained by RT-PCR analysis and western blotting. Cell survival was measured by the MTT method and the proteasome chymotrypsin-like activity was determined by fluorometry.

Results

RT-PCR analysis showed that the expression of PSMB5 was significantly lower in pterygium than in normal conjunctiva. The expression of PSMB5 was mediated by the Nrf2/ARE pathway as indicated by using the Nrf2 activator Oltipraz. The expression of PSMB5 and Nrf2 by pterygium fibroblasts was suppressed in a dose dependent manner following UVB radiation of 0–50?mJ/cm2 doses. The expression of PSMB5, but not of Nrf2, remained at almost the control levels, when UVB exposure was performed after pre-incubation of cells with the src kinases inhibitor PP2. UVB irradiation had very low deleterious effect on fibroblasts survival, while it did not affect the proteasome chymotrypsin-like activity.

Conclusion

In pterygium fibroblasts, UVB exposure leads to down-regulation of Nrf2/ARE-mediated PSMB5 gene expression, in which src kinases may be implicated. This effect may be partially responsible for the lower expression of PSMB5 detected in pterygium as compared to normal conjunctiva.

Background

Surgically induced scleral necrosis (SINS) is a severe form of scleritis threatening both vision and integrity of the eye. SINS is a rare sequel of ocular surgery and has been described after cataract extraction, trabeculectomy, strabismus, retinal detachment surgery including parsplana vitrectomy, penetrating keratoplasty, pterygium excision, and diode cyclophotocoagulation.

Materials and methods

To report on the application of autologous fascia lata as a readily available natural biomaterial for ocular tectonic support in SINS, we performed this retrospective chart review including two eyes of two patients; one case following both repaired rupture globe, parsplana vitrectomy, and diode laser transscleral cyclophotocoagulation and one case following pterygium surgical excision.

Results

Successful coverage of the area of scleral thinning with autologous fascia lata was achieved in both cases with overlying healthy vascularized conjunctiva and resolution of the ocular inflammation.

Conclusion

The fascia lata transplant combined with systemic immunosuppression was successful in providing adequate tectonic support and controlling the progression of scleral melt for two cases with SINS.  相似文献

Aims:

To investigate the effect of surgery type on the postoperative astigmatism in pterygium surgery.

Settings and Design:

Retrospective comparative clinical trial.

Materials and Methods:

Data of 240 eyes that underwent pterygium excision were investigated. Following removal of the pterygium, patients underwent 5 different types of surgeries: Conjunctival autograft with sutures (CAG-s) or fibrin glue (CAG-g), conjunctival rotational flap (CRF), or amniotic membrane transplantation with either suture (AMT-s) or with glue (AMT-g). The preoperative and postoperative keratometric measurements, evaluated using an automated keratorefractometer, were noted.

Statistical Analysis:

The overall changes in BCVA and astigmatic degree were evaluated using Wilcoxon signed rank test. The difference in astigmatic values between groups was calculated using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Results:

The most commonly performed procedure was CAG-s (N = 115), followed by CAG-g (N = 53), CRF (N = 47), AMT-s (N = 15), and AMT-g (N = 10). Following surgery, astigmatic values decreased from 3.47 ± 2.50 D to 1.29 ± 1.07 D (P < 0.001, paired t test). The changes in astigmatism was significantly related to the preoperative size of the pterygium (ρ = 3.464, P = 0.005). The postoperative astigmatism correlated with preoperative astigmatism (ρ = 0.351, P < 0.001, Spearman correlation analysis). The changes in astigmatic values was not related to the method of surgery (P = 0.055, ANOVA).

Conclusion:

Pterygium results in high corneal astigmatism, which decreases to an acceptable level following excision. According to our study, the type of grafting as CAG, CRF or AMT or the use of suture or glue to fixate the graft does not have a significant effect on the change in astigmatism degree.  相似文献

Purpose

To search subclinical platelet activation via detecting three important platelet activation parameters; mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT) in diabetic retinopathy (DR) in comparison with those in healthy adults as controls.

Methods

This prospective study included 140 patients who were followed-up at the Ankara Ulucanlar Eye Education and Research Hospital, and 40 normal subjects. All patients and control subjects underwent complete ophthalmologic evaluation. Of patients with type 2 diabetes, 43 cases with diabetes mellitus (DM) have no DR (Group 1), 45 cases with DM have nonproliferative DR (NPDR) (Group 2), and 52 cases with DM have proliferative DR (PDR) (Group 3). In addition, 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (Group 4) were included into the study. MPV, PDW, and PCT were measured in the studied groups.

Results

The MPV levels were significantly altered in Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 patients when compared with those in the controls (P<0.05), whereas PDW and PCT levels were not significantly changed among groups (P>0.05).

Conclusion

The data provided a significant association between MPV levels and DM. Diabetic patients have increased MPV values compared with healthy subjects, but MPV levels were not altered together with the DR stage. Diabetic and DR patients have no different PDW and PCT values compared with healthy subjects. MPV may be a clue for the reflection of subclinical platelet activation in DM regardless of the DR stage.  相似文献

Purpose

To compare the effect of using fibrin glue or 10-0 nylon sutures on the clinical outcome of patients undergoing pterygium excision and conjunctival autografting.

Methods

We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 52 eyes from 46 patients who underwent pterygium excision and conjunctival autografting and were followed up for more than 3 months. The operation duration, postoperative inflammation, complications, and recurrence rates were compared between groups of 20 patients (22 eyes) for whom fibrin glue was used (fibrin glue group) and 26 patients (30 eyes) for whom suturing was performed with 10-0 nylon (suture group) in pterygium excision and conjunctival autografting.

Results

The operation duration was 27.71 (5.22) minutes in the fibrin glue group and 43.30 (8.18) minutes in the suture group (p = 0.000). Seven days after the operation, the fibrin glue group showed milder conjunctival inflammation than the suture group (p = 0.000). Postoperative complications and corneal recurrence rates were not statistically different between the two groups.

Conclusions

The use of fibrin glue in pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting is likely to be a more effective, safer procedure than suturing.  相似文献

Aim

To evaluate the role of fixation in causing pterygium and determining its laterality and location.

Methods

This is a prospective, observational, case–control study. Cases were defined as patients with primary pterygium who had unilateral amblyopia with eccentric fixation. Controls were age-matched patients with primary pterygium, but without amblyopia and eccentric fixation. All patients underwent complete ocular, orthoptic, and systemic examination and a detailed risk-factor assessment (latitude of residence, exposure to sunlight, sand, and a high-reflectance environment). The role of fixation in the causation, laterality and location of pterygium was evaluated. Fisher''s exact test, the unpaired t-test, and odds ratio (OR) were carried out to determine the significance of the observations.

Results

The mean age of subjects was 47.1±5.25 years in cases (n=107) and 48.2±4.75 years in controls (n=310; P=0.78). As far as known risk factors were concerned, both groups were evenly matched. Among the cases, 88 (82.2%) patients demonstrated suppression of the amblyopic eye and 19 (17.8%) patients had abnormal retinal correspondence (ARC). Patients with suppression had a unilateral pterygium in the better (fixating) eye, whereas those with ARC had bilateral pterygia. Among the controls, 192 (61.9%) eyes had bilateral pterygia and 118 (38.1%) eyes had unilateral pterygium. In controls, the dominant eye had a higher prevalence of pterygium. All patients in both groups had a nasal pterygium. Pterygium and fixation were strongly associated (P=0.007; Fisher''s exact test; OR −15.98; P=0.008).

Conclusion

Fixation appears to have an important role in causing pterygium and determining its location and laterality.  相似文献

AIM: To evaluate the recurrence rate and safety of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) augmented with mitomycin C (MMC) compared with amniotic membrane transplantation alone during the pterygium excision. METHODS: We took a meta-analysis on this program. Pertinent studies were selected through extensive searches of the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CBMdisc, CNKI. Pooled estimates were carried out in RevMan software v.4.2. RESULTS: Six trials reported postoperative recurrence rate of pterygium, included 882 eyes, three trials reported the complications. The results of meta-analysis showed that recurrence rate of AMT plus MMC group was 5.41%, AMT alone group was 16.89%, RR was 0.32, 95%CI ranged from 0.19 to 0.56, Z was 4.06, P <0.001. Two trials reported early complication as punctata keratitis, the incidence rate of AMT plus MMC group and AMT alone group were 17.14% and 0.00%, RR was 12.11, 95%CI ranged from 1.62 to 90.76. CONCLUSION: Amniotic membrane transplantation with MMC was associated with lower recurrence rate compared with amniotic membrane transplantation alone in pterygium excision, whether accompanied a higher risk with adverse events need more investigation.  相似文献

Purpose

To assess and compare the recurrence rate of pterygium after limbal stem cell transplantation versus amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) as ocular surface reconstructing measures in recurrent pterygium, also evaluation of the use of antimetabolite drugs as adjunctive therapy for AMT.

Patients and methods

Prospective randomized comparative study included 60 eyes of 48 patients with recurrent pterygia. Informed consents were taken from all patients.Primary pterygium excision was performed 6–15 months ago; the cases were divided randomly into three equal groups:Group 1: included 20 eyes with excision of the pterygium and application of limbal stem cell transplantation with conjunctival autograft, group 2: included 20 eyes with excision of the pterygium followed by AMT and group 3: included 20 eyes in which surgical excision of pterygium was followed by intra-operative application of low-dose of MMC (0.05%) for 3 min then using AMT.

Results

The study included 36 males and 12 females of age ranged from 28 to 52 years. The recurrence rate was 2 eyes in group 1 (10%) (limbal stem cell transplantation + conjunctival autograft), 6 eyes in group 2 (30%) (AMT) and 4 eyes (20%) in group 3 (MMC + AMT). The rate of recurrence was significantly different between the three groups (P < 0.001).

Conclusions

Limbal stem cell transplantation together with conjunctival autografting proved to be more effective in prevention of pterygium recurrence and in rapid restoration of normal epithelial morphology. MMC in addition to AMT decreases the incidence of recurrence.Abbreviations: AMT, amniotic membrane transplantation; MMC, mitomycin C  相似文献

AIM: To assess the expression of anti-apoptotic protein survivin and tumor suppressor p53 protein in primary and recurrent pterygium and to investigate the relationship between them. METHODS: Survivin was assessed immunohistochemically using rabbit polyclonal antibody and p53 using mouse monoclonal antibody in a study sample of 20 cases of primary pterygium, 10 cases of recurrent pterygium and 10 cases of normal conjunctiva. RESLULTS: In our study, 35% of primary (7 of 20) and 40% of recurrent (4 of 10) pterygium specimens were positive for survivin staining; 45% of primary (9 of 20) and 50% of recurrent (5 of 10) pterygium specimens were positive for p53 expression; and all normal conjunctiva showed no staining of either survivin or p53. The p53 and survivin immunoreactivity in primary and recurrent pterygium groups was greater than those in normal conjunctiva group (P<0.05). There were no differences in p53 and survivin immunoreactivity between groups of primary and recurrent pterygium (P>0.05). The expression of survivin clearly segregated with p53-positive pterygium as compared with p53-negative cases [8 of 14 cases (57.1%) vs 3 of 16 cases (15.2%)]. The Fisher's exact test analysis confirmed a highly statistically significant correlation between survivin and p53 expression (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The survivin and p53 are overexpressed with correlation between them in primary and recurrent pterygium.  相似文献

Objective:

The objective of the following study is to compare the conjunctival graft thickness measured with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) after primary and recurrent pterygium excision.

Design:

Prospective, interventional and comparative study.

Participants:

A total of 20 eyes of 20 patients with primary pterygium (primary group) and 20 eyes of 20 patients with recurrent pterygium (recurrent group) were enrolled.

Materials and Methods:

All patients underwent pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft transplantation. Conjunctival graft thickness was measured at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery using the Visante-OCT (Carl-Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA). Main outcome measure was the mean conjunctival thickness determined as the mean of three measurements at 1, 2 and 3 mm posterior to the scleral spur.

Results:

There were no statistically significant differences in age, sex, or laterality between the groups. Mean thickness of the graft in primary and recurrent groups, respectively, was 430 ± 127 μm and 461 ± 178 μm at 1 week after surgery (P = 0.587), 114 ± 19 μm and 162 ± 48 μm at 1 month after surgery (P = 0.001) and 109 ± 15 μm and 107 ± 18 μm at 3 months after surgery (P = 0.726).

Conclusion:

The findings revealed that conjunctival thickness after primary or recurrent pterygium excision was greatest at 1 week after surgery and continued to decrease for up to 3 months. Mean graft thickness differed significantly between the two groups only at 1 month after surgery.  相似文献

Purpose

We report a case of a symptomatic, inflamed pterygium treated nonsurgically with topical dipyridamole and followed for 12 months.

Case Report

A 35-year-old woman presented with a stage II to III, V3, C3, K2, P1 (using Johnston, Williams & Sheppard''s classification) pterygium in her right eye. She complained of a foreign body sensation, dryness, burning, and persistent uncontrolled blinking. A raised lesion was observed on the nasal conjunctiva that was 1.5 mm in size. It extended slightly onto the nasal cornea. There was moderate vascularity of the lesion that obscured the underlying scleral vessels. Moderate conjunctival hyperemia was detected at and medial to the pterygium. The cornea, anterior chamber, and external anatomy were otherwise unremarkable. The eye was initially treated twice daily with a topical application of dipyridamole in a normal saline solution, which was later reduced to once daily.

Results

There was a marked improvement in both the pterygium and the patient''s symptoms. The tissue regressed from the limbal region of the cornea, had decreased in length from 1.5 to 1.0 mm, and decreased in height from approximately 1.0 to approximately 0.3 mm. Conjunctival hyperemia and vascularization resolved completely, and the underlying scleral vessels could once again be visualized. At 12 months, the pterygium was graded as stage 0 to I, V0, C2, K0, P0.

Conclusions

To our knowledge, this is the first case of successful management of a pterygium and associated symptoms using topical dipyridamole. Further investigation is required to clarify the potential role of dipyridamole in the treatment of pterygia and pingueculae.Key words: Pterygia, Pterygium, Surfer''s eye, Dipyridamole  相似文献

AIM:To assess the effect of topical bevacizumab use on postoperative pterygium recurrence in eyes who underwent pterygium excision with limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation (LCAT).METHODS:Eighty-eight eyes of 88 patients with primary pterygium were included. Pterygia were graded preoperatively from type 1 to type 3 (type 1 atrophic, type 3 inflamed) according to the inflammatory status. The eyes were preoperatively randomized to receive topical steroid and antibiotic treatment (group 1, 46 eyes) and additional topical bevacizumab (5 mg/mL; group 2, 42 eyes) in the postoperative period. All eyes underwent pterygium excision and LCAT. Medications were tapered and discontinued at one month. Postoperative complications and recurrence rates were recorded.RESULTS: The mean follow-up duration was 29.3±4.2mo (24-52mo) and 28.5±3.4 (24-48mo) in group 1 and 2, respectively (P>0.05). There were no statistically significant differences regarding the age or gender between groups (P>0.05). Also, the difference between groups with respect to pterygium type was not significant. During the follow-up period, recurrence developed in 2 eyes (4.3%) in group 1, whereas in one eye (2.4%) in group 2. No statistically significant difference between groups was found in recurrence rates (P>0.05). No re-operation for recurrence was necessary during the follow-up period in both groups.  相似文献

Purpose

To evaluate the effects of intraoperative triamcinolone injection on the outcome of pterygium surgery.

Methods

This prospective study included 54 eyes with primary nasal pterygia that underwent pterygium surgery with a bare-sclera technique and intraoperative mitomycin C application. Patients were randomized into two groups; the steroid group that received subconjunctival injection of 12 mg triamcinolone acetonide at the end of surgery, and the control group that did not receive such steroid injection. Main outcome measures included presence of conjunctival inflammation at 1 month postoperatively as well as recurrence of pterygium.

Results

Twelve-month follow-up was completed in 48 eyes (23 in the steroid group and 25 in the control group). At 1 month postoperatively, different grades of conjunctival inflammation were present in 11 (47.8%) of the steroid group and in 14 (56%) of the control group (P=0.39). For eyes with moderate or severe postoperative inflammation, subconjunctival triamcinolone was injected; these included 6 (26.1%) and 9 (36%) in the steroid and control groups, respectively (P=0.54). During follow-up, surgical area showed fine episcleral vessels without fibrous tissue in 1 (4.3%) of the steroid group and 3 (12.0%) of the control group (P=0.33), which all regressed after triamcinolone injection. Conjunctival recurrence of pterygium was seen in 2 (8.7%) of the steroid group and in 1 (4.0%) of the control group (P=0.47). No eye developed corneal recurrence in either group.

Conclusions

In pterygium surgery with a bare-sclera technique and mitomycin C application, intraoperative triamcinolone injection did not significantly reduce postoperative conjunctival inflammation or pterygium recurrence.  相似文献

Purpose

To compare lymphangiogenesis in primary versus recurrent pterygium.

Methods

Tissues from 88 excised primary and 34 recurrent pterygia were evaluated, and tissues from 7 nasal epibulbar conjunctivae segments were used as controls. The lymph-vascular area (LVA), lymph-microvascular density (LMD), and lymph-vascular luminal diameter (LVL) were examined and compared between the primary and recurrent pterygia. In addition, the expression of VEGF-A and VEGF-C in the primary and recurrent pterygia were determined by ELISA and real-time PCR. The relationships between the mRNA level and LVA, LMD, and LVL were clarified.

Results

Although there was no significant difference in quantification of LVL between primary and recurrent pterygia, the quantification of LVA and LMD in recurrent pterygia dramatically increased in comparison with primary pterygia (both P-values <0.01). Compared with primary pterygia, the VEGF-A and VEGF-C mRNA levels were up-regulated significantly in recurrent pterygia (both P-values <0.05). There was a significant relationship between VEGF-C mRNA and LVA, LMD, and LVL, while VEGF-A mRNA was only closely correlated with LMD in recurrent pterygia.

Conclusions

Lymphangiogenesis develops in recurrent pterygium, for which transient up-regulation of VEGF-C might be responsible.  相似文献

AIM: To compare the status of bacteria in the conjunctival sac from the elder Qiang minority and Han people with dry eyes in Sichuan, China. METHODS: Total of 54 elder Qiang people with dry eyes (108 eyes) were examined by cluster sampling. In the similar habitation region of Han people, 80 (160 dry eyes) Han people were analyzed as the control group. The bacteria was separated from the inferior palpebral conjunctiva, then inoculated on blood plate for 48 hours and identified. RESULTS: Totally 24 strains of bacteria were cultured in either Qiang minority or Han c populations with 3 strains of them existed in both ethnic groups. The commonest bacteria in conjunctival sac in two ethnic groups were non-pathogenic bacterium. The composition of Corynebacterium in Han people (54.1%) was significantly higher than that in Qiang minority (27.4%) (χ2=11.6721, P=0.0006). The percentage of Sphingomonas Paucimobilis in Qiang people was higher than that in Han people (χ2=18.6442, P= 0.0000). However, there was no significant difference between Qiang minority and Han people either in bacterial positive rate in conjunctival sac, or the composition of bacteria species and strains, or the composition of staphylococcus epidemids between two ethnic populations. CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference of bacterial positive rate in conjunctival sac from the elder of Qiang minority and Han people with dry eye, but the species of bacteria were different.  相似文献
