Isoniazid overdose in the Cambodian population of Olmsted County, Minnesota

Eight cases of suicidal isoniazid overdose by Cambodian refugees are reviewed. In all patients generalized seizures and metabolic acidosis developed. Treatment included supportive measures and intravenous pyridoxine hydrochloride. There were no deaths. Psychiatric evaluation of each patient revealed usual and extraordinary life and social adjustment stresses. Indochinese immigrants are a subpopulation at risk for isoniazid overdose.     

Medullomyoblastoma: a case report

Medullomyoblastoma is a rare childhood tumor of the central nervous system and there have been only seventeen cases reported in the English literature. A case of medullomyoblastoma arising from the cerebellar vermis was reported. Postmortem examination revealed diffuse leptomeningeal dissemination and supratentorial metastasis. In addition to classical histologic examination, the immunohistochemical and ultrastructural features were studied. Besides skeletal muscle differentiation, neither neuronal nor astrocytic differentiation were identified. The myoblastic element was confirmed by the demonstration of thick and thin myofilaments and Z bands on electron microscopy and by positive immunostaining for myoglobin.     

假性甲状旁腺功能减退症1例报告

假性甲状旁腺功能减退症(Pseudohypoparathyroidism,PHP)是指一组以低钙、高磷和甲状旁腺激素(PTH)抵抗为特征的显性/隐性遗传病。主要临床表现为反复低钙性抽搐,常伴有语言及体格发育迟缓和Albright 遗传性骨营养不良症,给予补钙后症状可缓解。此病临床少见,多以手足抽搐就诊,常导致误诊及漏诊。本文主要对PHP的鉴别诊断、治疗等方面展开讨论,旨在通过这一典型的病例报道,提高广大临床工作者对此病的认识。     

Acute respiratory distress syndrome due to overdose desferrioxamine: report of a child

In this article, we present an 18-month-old girl with acute iron poisoning who died from acute respiratory distress syndrome due to overdose of desferrioxamine. Our purpose is to emphasize the importance of close follow-up children with acute iron poisoning for desferrioxamine toxicity.

Cardiac angiosarcoma: a case report

Primary neoplasms of the heart are rare and difficult to diagnose prior to surgery, even with modern imaging techniques. Often, the tumors are diagnosed only at autopsy. Angiosarcoma is the most common malignant neoplasm. This disease is most commonly found in middle-aged men, and the tumor is most often located in the right atrium. It commonly causes blood flow abnormalities, extensively infiltrates cardiac structures, and may extend through the heart wall to involve adjacent structures. Metastatic spread at the time of diagnosis is common, and surgical mortality is high. We present a case of primary angiosarcoma involving the right ventricle of the heart. This tumor developed 6 months after the patient had undergone coronary artery bypass surgery. The patient was initially thought to have a massive thrombus within the right ventricle but at surgery was found to have a malignant neoplasm invading the myocardium. Subsequently, he was found to have pulmonary metastases. A debulking procedure was performed, and the patient was started on chemotherapy. Rather prompt improvement occurred after the debulking procedure, but subsequent studies have indicated progression of the pulmonary metastases despite ongoing chemotherapy.
