The relation of diet and nutritional supplements, cigarette use, alcohol consumption, and blood lipids to plasma levels of beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol was studied among 330 men and women aged 18-79 years. Dietary carotene, preformed vitamin A, and vitamin E intake were estimated by a self-administered semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The correlation of dietary carotene with plasma beta-carotene was reduced in smokers compared with nonsmokers (r = 0.02 vs. 0.44 among men; r = 0.19 vs. 0.45 among women). Smokers had much lower plasma levels of beta-carotene than did nonsmokers (geometric mean 8.5 vs. 15.3 micrograms/dl for men; 17.3 vs. 26.3 micrograms/dl for women) despite only slightly lower intakes of carotenoids. In multiple regression analyses, men who smoked one pack per day had 72% (95% confidence interval (CI) 58-89) of the plasma beta-carotene levels of nonsmokers after accounting for dietary carotene and other variables; for women, the corresponding percentage was 79% (CI 64-99). In similar models, men drinking 20 g of alcohol per day had 76% (CI 65-88) of the beta-carotene levels of nondrinkers; women had 89% (CI 73-108) of the levels of nondrinkers. An interaction term for carotene intake and smoking was statistically significant in a model combining both sexes. These results suggest that plasma levels of beta-carotene among smokers and, perhaps, heavy consumers of alcohol may be reduced substantially below levels due to differences in diet. The correlation of calorie-adjusted intake of vitamin E with lipid-adjusted plasma levels of vitamin alpha-tocopherol was 0.53 for men (n = 137) and 0.51 for women (n = 193) and did not differ by alcohol consumption and cigarette use; these correlations were largely accounted for by use of vitamin supplements. In linear regression models, vitamin E intake and plasma lipids were significant predictors of plasma alpha-tocopherol levels.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess relationships between energy, nutrient and food intakes, alcohol consumption, smoking status and body mass index (BMI), and serum concentrations of beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, vitamin C, selenium and zinc. METHODS: Data on health status, alcohol consumption, smoking habits, anthropometric data and biochemical measurements were obtained in 1821 women aged 35-60 y and 1307 men aged 45-60 y, participant to the SU.VI.MAX Study. Data on dietary intake were available on a subsample who reported six 24-h dietary records during the first 18 months of the study. RESULTS: Women had higher baseline serum beta-carotene and vitamin C concentrations and lower concentration for serum vitamin E, zinc and selenium than men. In women, younger age was associated with lowered mean concentration of serum beta-carotene, vitamin E and selenium. In men, only differences were observed for serum zinc, which was lower in older men. Current smokers of both sexes had significantly lower concentrations of serum beta-carotene, vitamin C and selenium, and, only in women, of vitamin E, than nonsmokers. Alcohol consumers had lower concentrations of serum beta-carotene and higher selenium concentrations. Serum beta-carotene and vitamin C concentrations were lower in obese subjects. There were positive associations of dietary beta-carotene, vitamin C and E with their serum concentrations. Age, nutrient and alcohol intakes, serum cholesterol, BMI and smoking status explained 15.2% of the variance of serum beta-carotene in men and 13.9% in women, and 10.8 and 10.0% for serum vitamin C, and 26.3 and 28.6% for serum vitamin E, respectively. CONCLUSION: Serum antioxidant nutrient concentrations are primarily influenced by sex, age, obesity, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and especially dietary intake of those antioxidant nutrients.  相似文献

African Americans in the southern United States have a high prevalence of chronic disease. Tocopherol intake and status have been associated with protection against several chronic diseases. Our objectives were, therefore, to examine the association between tocopherol intakes as measured by 2 regional FFQ and their corresponding concentrations in serum and to report on dietary sources of tocopherols in 404 men and women participating in the cross-sectional Diet and Physical Activity Sub-Study of the Jackson Heart Study. A large proportion (49% of men and 66% of women) reported dietary supplement use. Only 5.8% of men and 4.5% of women met the estimated average requirement (EAR) for vitamin E from foods alone, whereas 44.2% men and 49.2% women met it from foods and supplements. Total (diet + supplement) intake of alpha-tocopherol was associated with its corresponding measure in serum. Vitamin E supplement use, sex, serum cholesterol, education, and BMI, but not gamma-tocopherol intakes, were associated with serum gamma-tocopherol. For delta-tocopherol, associated variables included sex and serum cholesterol. The top food sources of alpha- and gamma-tocopherol were snack chips and the top food source of delta-tocopherol was margarine. Despite prevalent vitamin E supplement use, more than one-half of this population did not meet the EAR for alpha-tocopherol intake and very few met it from food alone. Supplement use was associated with higher alpha- but lower gamma-tocopherol concentration in serum. The possible health implications of this difference in relative tocopherol subtypes require further study.  相似文献

Serum leptin concentrations in infants: effects of diet, sex, and adiposity   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
BACKGROUND: Leptin, the product of the obese (ob) gene, is a regulator of food intake and energy metabolism. Immunoreactive leptin was detected recently in breast milk and it has been hypothesized that leptin may be absorbed and may contribute to differences in body composition between breast-fed and formula-fed infants. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to evaluate whether diet, adiposity, or sex affect plasma leptin in breast-fed and formula-fed infants. DESIGN: Venous blood samples were drawn from healthy, exclusively breast-fed or formula-fed Swedish infants at 1, 4, and 6 mo of age (n = 193) and from 12-mo-old Finnish infants (n = 79). Anthropometric measurements were made and plasma samples were analyzed for leptin, insulin, and glucose. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in plasma leptin between formula-fed and breast-fed infants at 1 and 4 mo of age, whereas formula-fed infants had significantly higher ( approximately 5%) leptin concentrations at 6 mo of age. Similar results were observed after correction for BMI. Plasma leptin was 15-25% higher in female than in male infants at 1, 4, and 12 mo of age (P < 0.05), also after correction for BMI. When all infants were analyzed together, a positive correlation (r = 0.34, P < 0.0001) was found between plasma leptin and BMI. Very low leptin concentrations were found in breast milk after centrifugation and the high concentrations reported previously were likely due to interference in the assay by milk fat. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma leptin concentrations are not higher in breast-fed than in formula-fed infants; however, sex and adiposity affect leptin concentrations even at this early age.  相似文献

Levels of retinol, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol were determined in the serum of 415 adults over age 35 years who had volunteered in 1974 to donate blood for cancer research in Washington County, Maryland. Males had higher levels of serum retinol, lower levels of beta-carotene, and only slightly lower levels of alpha-tocopherol than did females. No clear-cut association was noted with age. Smokers had decreased serum levels of beta-carotene. Vitamin supplementation was associated with higher serum levels. Persons taking medication for high blood pressure had higher levels of retinol and alpha-tocopherol, but lower levels of beta-carotene.  相似文献

Based on a cross-sectional study conducted among 100 adults in 1993 in Tanga, Tanzania, the relationship between Wuchereria bancrofti infection and markers of iron, vitamin A and vitamin E status was assessed. Potential predictors assessed were elephantiasis, hydrocoele, W. bancrofti microfilaria intensity and antigen concentration, and intensity of Schistosoma haematobium, hookworm, Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides infection, while controlling for age, sex and elevated serum alpha-1 antichymotrypsin. Of the 100 adults, 62 had W. bancrofti antigenaemia and 43 microfilaraemia, and 21 had elephantiasis. Of the 64 males, 31 had hydrocoele. W. bancrofti microfilaria intensity was a positive predictor of serum ferritin and a negative predictor of serum alpha-tocopherol. In contrast, negative relationships observed between W. bancrofti microfilaria intensity and serum beta-carotene and retinol were not significant. Neither antigen concentration nor clinical manifestations were predictors of micronutrient status. Intensity of hookworm infection was associated with lower serum ferritin. S. haematobium egg output was not a significant predictor of serum ferritin, but was a positive predictor of serum beta-carotene. In conclusion, W. bancrofti microfilaria intensity was associated with higher serum ferritin, but lower serum alpha-tocopherol. The associations probably reflect increased oxidative stress due to microfilariaehost interactions, which could play a role in the pathogenesis.  相似文献

An important part of understanding the functions of vitamin A, vitamin E and the carotenoids in nutritional status assessment, health promotion and disease prevention is knowledge of factors that influence their distribution in human tissues. Our objective was to examine serum concentrations of these nutrients and compounds in a sample of 285 healthy participants, 12-17 y old, from three U. S. cities. Pearson correlations between diet measured with a food frequency questionnaire and serum nutrient concentrations among these adolescents (adjusted for total serum cholesterol, age, sex, race and body mass index) were as follows: retinol, 0.23; alpha-tocopherol, 0.16; alpha-carotene, 0.31; beta-carotene, 0.15; beta-cryptoxanthin, 0.38; lycopene, 0.08; and lutein + zeaxanthin, 0.25. Multivariate linear regression modeled associations of demographic, dietary and physiologic variables with serum concentrations of these nutrients. African-American participants had significantly lower concentrations of serum retinol (P < 0.001), alpha-tocopherol (P < 0.01) and alpha-carotene (P < 0.02), but higher concentrations of lutein + zeaxanthin (P = 0.001) compared with Caucasians. Obese participants had serum nutrient concentrations that were 2-10% (P < 0.05) lower than normal weight participants. Dietary intake was a significant predictor of all serum analytes (P < 0.01) except lycopene. These models explained 20% of the variability in serum retinol, 28% of the variability in serum alpha-tocopherol, and 14-24% of the variability in serum carotenoids.  相似文献

Human serum contains many different antioxidants which may be important in the maintenance of antioxidant status. beta-carotene and lycopene are carotenoids with potent antioxidant activity. Carotenoids intake probably protects against cancers and may affect the risk of several chronic conditions. alpha-tocopherol is well known for its function as antioxidant and in reduction of heart disease and cancer risk. We aimed to establish baseline values for serum beta-carotene, lycopene and alpha-tocopherol concentrations in healthy northeast Thais. Fasting serum beta-carotene, lycopene and alpha-tocopherol levels from 294 subjects aged 23-75 years old in northeast Thailand were determined by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The mean serum beta-carotene, lycopene and alpha-tocopherol levels were 0.53 +/- 0.32 micromol/L, 0.57 +/- 0.37 micromol/L, and 26.64 +/- 14.85 micromol/L respectively. Serum beta-carotene and lycopene levels in females (N = 118) were significantly higher than the value for males (N = 176), ie 0.60 +/- 0.31 micromol/L versus 0.48 +/- 0.32 micromol/L (p = 0.002) for beta-carotene and 0.74 +/- 0.38 micromol/L versus 0.46 +/- 0.33 micromol/L (p<0.001) for lycopene whereas alpha-tocopherol level in males (28.60 +/- 14.34 micromol/L) was significantly higher than in females (23.72 +/- 15.16 micromol/L) (p = 0.006). beta-carotene level was positively correlated with alpha-tocopherol (r = 0.22, p<0.001) and lycopene levels (r = 0.63, p<0.001). The results from this study give the baseline data of serum beta-carotene, lycopene and alpha-tocopherol levels in healthy northeast Thai population and also suggest future study on the relationship of dietary intake.  相似文献

The hypocholesterolemic effects of phytosterols have not been evaluated in bakery products, and the addition of liposoluble antioxidants to the carrier has never been tested. We investigated the effects of consuming croissants and magdalenas (Spanish muffins) enriched with sterol esters, alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene on plasma lipid and fat-soluble antioxidant concentrations in normocholesterolemic, habitual consumers of bakery products following their usual diet and lifestyle. Using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, the control (C) group (n = 29) received two pieces daily (standard croissant and muffin) and the sterol ester (SE) group (n = 28), the same products with sterol esters added (3.2 g/d) for 8 wk. Total and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) decreased in the SE group by 0.24 mmol/L (P < 0.01) and 0.26 mmol/L (P < 0.005), respectively, whereas these variables did not change in the control group. The total difference in total and LDL-C changes between groups was 0.38 mmol/L (8.9%) and 0.36 mmol/L (14.7%), respectively (P < 0.001). Within-group changes in HDL cholesterol, triacylglycerol or lipoprotein(a) concentrations did not differ. Similarly, within-group changes over time in plasma tocopherol and carotenoid concentrations did not differ between groups. Our findings suggest that bakery products are excellent carriers for phytosterols, and their consumption is associated with a decrease in total and LDL-C concentrations, with no changes in alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene. The ability of bakery products to include sufficient quantities of beta-carotene to compensate for a potential deficiency, and the fact that their efficacy was not associated with the time of day at which they were consumed, are interesting findings.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between plasma antioxidants (beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol) and lung function in Dutch adults aged 20-59 y. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Population-based study. Subjects: A random sample (n=367) was drawn from all participants (men and women) aged 20-59 y with reproducible lung function measurements in 1995. INTERVENTION: Completion of general questionnaire and physical examination. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) and plasma levels of beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol. RESULTS: Subjects with a high plasma beta-carotene level (90th percentile, that is 0.57 micromol/L) tended to have a higher FEV1 (73 ml, s.e.m. 60 ml; P=0.22) and a higher FVC (147 ml, s.e.m. 76 ml; P=0.05) than subjects with a low plasma beta-carotene level (10th percentile, that is 0.11 micromol/L) after adjustment for age, height, gender, smoking status, pack-years of smoking and alcohol consumption. There was no difference in lung function between subjects with high and low plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that subjects with a high plasma beta-carotene tended to have a higher FVC than subjects with a low plasma beta-carotene concentration which was borderline statistically significant. The difference for FEV1 between high and low levels of plasma beta-carotene tended to be in the same positive direction as that of FVC but did not reach the pre-set statistical significance level. There is no relation between plasma alpha-tocopherol and lung function. Dietary carotenoids are associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases. Raw food diets are predominantly plant-based diets that are practised with the intention of preventing chronic diseases by virtue of their high content of beneficial nutritive substances such as carotenoids. However, the benefit of a long-term adherence to these diets is controversial since little is known about their adequacy. Therefore, we investigated vitamin A and carotenoid status and related food sources in raw food diet adherents in Germany. Dietary vitamin A, carotenoid intake, plasma retinol and plasma carotenoids were determined in 198 (ninety-two male and 106 female) strict raw food diet adherents in a cross-sectional study. Raw food diet adherents consumed on average 95 weight% of their total food intake as raw food (approximately 1800 g/d), mainly fruits. Raw food diet adherents had an intake of 1301 retinol activity equivalents/d and 16.7 mg/d carotenoids. Plasma vitamin A status was normal in 82% of the subjects (> or = 1.05 micromol/l) and 63% had beta-carotene concentrations associated with chronic disease prevention (> or = 0.88 micromol/l). In 77% of subjects the lycopene status was below the reference values for average healthy populations (< 0.45 micromol/l). Fat contained in fruits, vegetables and nuts and oil consumption was a significant dietary determinant of plasma carotenoid concentrations (beta-carotene r 0.284; P < 0.05; lycopene r 0.168; P = 0.024). Long-term raw food diet adherents showed normal vitamin A status and achieve favourable plasma beta-carotene concentrations as recommended for chronic disease prevention, but showed low plasma lycopene levels. Plasma carotenoids in raw food adherents are predicted mainly by fat intake.  相似文献

Stanyl esters dissolved in margarine inhibit cholesterol absorption, lower sterol absorption in general, and lower serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and plant sterol levels. To find out whether stanyl esters inhibit absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene in acute experiments, we performed two fat-tolerance tests fortified with vitamins (retinol 0.9-3.7 mg, alpha-tocopherol 70-581 mg), beta-carotene (25-150 mg) and squalene (0.5 g) with and without 1 g of stanyl ester added to the test meal in ten healthy men. The concentrations or areas under the curves (AUC) of cholesterol, triacylglycerols, squalene and alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene and retinyl palmitate showed typical postprandial changes in serum, chylomicrons, VLDL and VLDL infranatant (intermediate-density lipoproteins, LDL and HDL) over 24 h after the test meal without stanyl esters, and they were not affected by the addition of stanyl esters. The post-absorptive serum campesterol concentration and campesterol : cholesterol were significantly lowered at 6-9 h by stanyl ester supplementation, reflecting reduced sterol absorption efficiency. Changes in vitamin and beta-carotene AUC did not correlate with the given doses. In conclusion, the present study shows that stanyl esters dissolved in margarine do not detectably interfere in a short-term study with the absorption of alpha-tocopherol, beta-carotene or retinol measured by a 24 h oral fat-load test.  相似文献

The relationships of plasma retinol, retinol-binding protein (RBP), beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol with their potential determinants, plasma cholesterol and triglyceride, body fat, dietary intake, stages of pubertal development, and drugs, were examined in a French sample of 263 boys and 246 girls aged 10-15 y. By use of multiple-regression analysis, plasma retinol concentration was positively related to plasma cholesterol and triglyceride, sexual-maturation index, body fat, and being male. For plasma RBP the same predictors were identified. Plasma beta-carotene was positively related to plasma cholesterol and beta-carotene nutrient density and negatively related to body fat and plasma triglyceride. Three predictors of plasma alpha-tocopherol were identified: plasma cholesterol and vitamin E nutrient density, which were positively related to its concentration, and sexual-maturation index, which was negatively related. These results confirm that physiological developmental age should be considered in epidemiologic studies of plasma fat-soluble vitamins in adolescents.  相似文献

Relative risks for lung and bladder cancers by smoking intensity level off at more than 15-20 cigarettes per day. A three-parameter excess relative risk model in pack-years and intensity quantified this leveling (Lubin et al., Am J Epidemiol 2007;166:479-89). Above 15-20 cigarettes per day was an "inverse exposure rate" effect whereby, for equal pack-years, the excess relative risk/pack-year decreased with increasing intensity; that is, smoking at a lower intensity for a longer duration was more deleterious than smoking at a higher intensity for a shorter duration. After adjustment for pack-years, intensity effects were quantitatively homogeneous across multiple case-control studies of lung, bladder, oral cavity, pancreas, and esophagus cancers. The authors extended those analyses to examine intensity patterns for incident bladder, esophagus, kidney, larynx, liver, lung, oropharynx, and pancreas cancers by using data from a single prospective cohort in Finland, the Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study, with follow-up from enrollment, which occurred between 1985 and 1988, through April 2004. At more than 10 cigarettes per day, they found an inverse exposure rate pattern for each cancer site. After adjustment for pack-years, intensity effects were quantitatively homogeneous across the diverse cancer sites and homogeneous with intensity effects from the prior analysis of multiple studies. Consistency of intensity patterns suggested a general phenomenon and may provide clues to the molecular basis of smoking-related cancer risk.  相似文献

We investigated the concentrations of beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol, and retinol in obese children, together with assessment of the influence of relative body weight and plasma lipids. A lower plasma beta-carotene level was observed in the obese children, and plasma beta-carotene was inversely correlated with the relative body weight, but not with plasma total lipids. In contrast, the plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration was correlated with plasma total lipids, but not with the severity of obesity. Both the beta-carotene/plasma total lipids ratio and the alpha-tocopherol/plasma total lipids ratio were decreased in hyperlipidemic children, while there was a slight increase of the plasma retinol concentration. There was a marked elevation of the plasma beta-carotene concentration and a reduction of the alpha-tocopherol concentration corresponding to the changes of plasma lipids with diet and exercise. We conclude that different kinetics of the fat-soluble vitamins such as beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol exists during dieting and exercise in obese children.  相似文献

Background and objectiveCentral or abdominal obesity (AA) is a highly prevalent determinant of the metabolic syndrome and its control requires intervention strategies. This study investigated the risk factors associated with the presence of AA in hospitalized individuals.Patients and methodsA total of 1626 patients were studied. The investigated risk factors possibly associated with AA were gender, age, body mass index (BMI), habitual energy intake (HEI) and fat intake (FI). AA was determined by waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The chi2, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare the data and univariate and multiple logistic regressions were used to identify the predictive factors of AA.ResultsWomen were at higher risk of developing AA than men (P < 0.0001). The HEI and FI of individuals with and without AA and of women and men were not significantly different. According to multivariate analysis, HEI was not a predictive factor of AA, contrary to gender and age. The risk factors for AA, determined by WC, were gender (OR = 6.8; CI = 5.3–8.7) and age (OR = 1.0; CI = 1.0–1.0). Women were six times more likely to develop AA than men.ConclusionsEvidence of an association between AA and HEI or FI was not found, but gender and age were associated with AA.  相似文献

Objectives

To elucidate the mechanism through which vitamin D is associated with decreased falls.

Design

This was a convenience sample from a larger observational study examining correlations between vitamin D and 1) falls, 2) motor function, and 3) cognition (n=159).

Setting

Falls data were collected via weekly on-line surveys completed in the participants?? homes. Yearly evaluations of motor and cognitive function were conducted in an out-patient setting of a large tertiary medical center.

Participants

Participants from the Intelligent Systems for Assessment of Aging Changes Study (ISAAC), a community-based cohort study of independently living older adults over age 70, who had vitamin D concentration within 6 months of clinical evaluations were included in the analysis.

Results

Participants mean age was 85 years and 74% were women. Fallers (n=37) had significantly lower vitamin D concentration (32.9ng/ml) compared to non-fallers (39.2ng/ml) (p<0.01). The relationship between vitamin D and falls remained significant after adjusting for age, health status (via CIRS), and supplement use (p=0.004). Vitamin D concentration were significantly associated with cognitive impairment (Clinical Dementia Rating = 0.5) (p=0.02) and MMSE (p<0.01) after adjusting for age, gender, and education. Vitamin D concentrations did not correlate with any motor measures.

Conclusion

Vitamin D concentrations correlated with cognition and falls, but not with motor measures. Further research is needed to demonstrate a causal relationship between vitamin D and cognitive function and determine if cognition plays a role in falls reduction.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with nutritional doses of antioxidant nutrients on the serum concentrations of ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, and beta-carotene in healthy elderly women. METHODS: The study was performed as a randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. Two hundred forty-one free-living, healthy women aged 60 years and older were recruited by newspaper advertisement in Hanover, Germany and its environs. As 21 women dropped out, data of 220 women (aged 60-91 years median 63 years) were included in this evaluation. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either a multivitamin/mineral or placebo capsule with identical appearance for six months containing 36 mg 36mg vitamin E, 150 mg vitamin C, and 9 mg beta-carotene. Serum concentrations of vitamin C, alpha-tocopherol, and beta-carotene were measured initially and after six months of supplementation. Data were analyzed with the SPSS 10.0 program. RESULTS: Median serum concentrations of alpha-carotene and vitamin E increased significantly in the supplemented group (p=0.000), whereas no significant modifications were observed in the placebo group. Median vitamin C concentration of the supplemented group did not differ from baseline after intervention, but that of the placebo group was significantly decreased after six months (p=0.000). In comparison to estimated desirable serum concentrations of > 30 micromol/L vitamin E, 50 micromol/L vitamin C, and > 0.4 micromol/l beta-carotene at baseline, lower concentrations were found in 21.1%, 6.9%, and 1.0% of all subjects, respectively. After supplementation none of the members of the supplemented group had tocopherol concentrations below 30 micromol/L and only one woman of the supplemented group had a serum beta-carotene concentration below 0.4 micromol/L. The change in serum concentrations of vitamin C and E in the supplemented group depended on the status at baseline. CONCLUSION: A six-month supplementation with physiological doses of antioxidant vitamins improves the blood concentration of these nutrients even in relatively well-nourished elderly women or, as seen for vitamin C, prevents reduction of serum concentrations. Prevalence of suboptimal serum concentrations can be reduced.  相似文献
