PURPOSE: To evaluate the extent of an international perspective in publication in nursing journals. DESIGN: Characteristics of 2,581 articles, authors of articles, and journals (editorial purpose and editorial team) of 42 high-ranking nursing journals for the year 2000 were analyzed. METHODS: The characteristics were assessed using seven operational definitions of "international." FINDINGS: Major findings were: (a) 747 (28.9%) articles were identified as international, of which (b) 705 (94.3%) were placed in the scholarly or empirical categories; (c) more articles were categorized as empirical in the international articles; more articles were categorized as scholarly among the noninternational articles; (d) 763 (79.3%) articles met an international definition based on author characteristics; and (e) 20 (47.6%) journals had international editorial teams. CONCLUSIONS: Nearly 30% of articles had international content. Articles with international content were more frequently databased than were noninternational articles. The study provides a baseline indication of the extent of international perspectives in published articles in nursing journals. The extent to which these international articles make substantial contributions to knowledge has yet to be discovered.  相似文献

Hope has been described in theoretical terms for many years but the recognition of the importance of hope within the practice of nursing is a more recent phenomenon. Despite the recent growth of references to hope within contemporary nursing literature, it is reasonable to suggest that there remain gaps in the substantive knowledge base and that there appears to be room for both additional research and further discursive literature. Accordingly, this series of six articles will explore the nature of hope, review the existing theoretical and empirical work in several discrete areas of nursing, and provide case studies to illustrate the role that hope plays in clinical situations. This article focuses on the origins, background and definitions of hope. The next article will examine hope within mental health nursing, and further articles will focus on hope within palliative care nursing, hope in gerontological nursing and hope in critical and acute care nursing.  相似文献

Aims. To offer a detailed discussion of the issue of ‘lack of critique’ in the literature on spirituality in nursing. The discussion will include the limited use of sources from theology and religious studies and the demand to separate spirituality and religion and will go on to examine the consequences of the resulting approach. The drive for unique knowledge to further professionalisation and the demands of inclusiveness are suggested as possible reasons for the development of the current model. The dangers and pitfalls of definition are explored. The paper suggests that theology could provide insights into explaining spirituality. Background. The last four decades have seen a proliferation of definitions of spirituality in the nursing literature. Recently, in response to their own concerns and prompts from outside the ‘spirituality’ community authors have suggested that we revisit this literature with a more critical stance. This paper is in response to that suggestion. During the course of a PhD supervised from a department of practical theology I have critically analysed the literature from several perspectives and this paper is one result of that review. Design. Literature review. Methods. Critical reflection on how spirituality has been defined. Conclusion. The lack of critique has produced a bias in the literature towards broad, generic, existential definitions which, together with the intentional divorce from religion and theology have led to definitions which have the tendency to result in a type of spiritual care which is indistinguishable from psychosocial care, hard to explain to patients and difficult to put into practice. Relevance to clinical practice. The acceptance of a diverse range of understandings of spirituality and a greater focus on practical ways of using it in nursing care are the direction the profession should be moving into.  相似文献

It is vital for nurses to publish in order to provide evidence of their practice and to increase the knowledge base of their discipline. This paper is one of two that reports on an investigation of the nursing research published by Australian authors from 1995-2000 in 11 nursing journals based in Australia, the UK and the USA. The focus of this article is on the researchers drawn from a total of 509 articles that were content analysed and categorised according to topics of research, paradigm, methods used and funding acknowledgment. The researchers were analysed on the basis of gender, discipline, employment base and location. Publications had from one to 10 authors, averaging two, with 26 authors claiming 23.6% of research articles. The most common discipline area was nursing and universities were the leading area of employment. Authorship was not limited to capital cities reflecting the spread of university campuses in rural areas. Research papers made up 12.5% of possible articles, supporting the notion that few nurses publish research papers in the refereed general nursing journals we focused on.  相似文献

Objective: In today's world with sweeping changes, nurses are responsible for providing high-quality and cost-benefit care, which would almost be impossible unless they achieve their high professional status. To date, no precise and comprehensive definition of professionalism in nursing has been evidently proposed. In fact, many of the previously proposed definitions are either complicated or ambiguous. Moreover, there is no consensus in the literature on an exhaustive definition for "a professional nurse." The present study aimed to illustrate the concept of professionalism in nursing and identify its defining characteristics. Methods: In this study, concept analysis was conducted using Whittemore et al.'s method for the integrated review. A comprehensive search of electronic, scientific databases including Eric, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCO, PsychoINFO, Embass, MagIran,IranDoc, SID, and IRANMEDEX was carried out using the keywords such as professionalism, professional behavior, nursing professionalism (NP), professional attribute, and nursing. Results: In the present study, a comprehensive search of 11 electronic databases retrieved 5738 articles. Then, 2837 duplicate articles were removed by endnote (version 8). Based on a preliminary examination of the titles and abstracts as well as the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 1517 articles were excluded. In addition, 137 articles were removed for scientific reasons. Finally, 52 articles in English and Persian were selected. Content analysis of the articles revealed four major themes, namely, individual prerequisite, professional prerequisite, appropriate structure, and socio-individual factors. Conclusions: Professionalism in nursing is a major, multidimensional concept according to the literature that included individual prerequisites, professional prerequisites, appropriate structures, and socio-individual factors. In fact, professionalism in nursing comprises a wide range of personal characteristics, self-regulation, professional values, striving to acquire and enhance professional expertise, professional interactions, social, professional, and legal responsibility, and creation of a sense of belonging, and professional development.  相似文献

Within the nursing discipline, the research helps or should help to develop and assess the theories related to the relevant phenomena. A professional discipline such as ours determines the relevant phenomena through its sphere of activity and the priorities of the society in general. With time, the disciplines develop a preference in the way of thinking about their discipline. At that point, there is no singular approach to the development of knowledge inside the nursing discipline, and no consensus either on the way of carrying out nursing research, whether it is applied or not. From time immemorial, the logical and systematic chain of reasoning coupled with the minute observation, the reflection and the intuition have built up the processes essential to the understanding of the human natural phenomena. Thus, the nursing research was mainly influenced by the two prevailing approaches (quantitative and qualitative) both focused on the experience, but using different strategies to get in touch with reality. Recently, the triangulation of the research elements seems more frequent, whether it is the combination of theories, of methods or of researchers of different disciplines with different perspectives. Each approach has its own methods and criteria to collect and analyse the data, then to interpret and check the results. The reproduction and the confirmation of this knowledge through additional and critical research are essential if we want this knowledge to be recognized by this discipline.  相似文献

Nursing practice involves the use of different types of knowledge. This article provides an analysis of personal knowing, one type of nursing knowledge. It uses an example from the cancer nursing literature that reflects the creative and expressive dimensions of personal knowing. The author discusses the social/political process used to determine the validity of this way of knowing and comments on the invaluable contribution that the practice of personal knowing and all types of nursing knowledge lend to the discipline of nursing and to the art and science of cancer nursing.  相似文献

During the past 20 years, we have witnessed an explosion in nursing knowledge providing the discipline with diverse and multifaceted theoretical frameworks and paradigms. One knowledge theme that pervades the dialogue in the scholarly literature is that of multiple ways of knowing. With the acknowledgement that the fundamental nature of nursing knowledge is grounded in the understanding of human nature and its response to its environment, comes an imperative for a consilience of knowledge. The purpose of this article is to present such a unified worldview by articulating a vision of nursing knowledge, a meaning of unity of knowledge, and a challenge to the discipline to embrace inclusive rather than exclusive ways of knowing.  相似文献

BackgroundNurse sensitive indicators (NSIs) capture the outcomes of each nursing function impacted by nursing care. NSIs are critical in clarifying foci for emergency nurses when providing care in the emergency department (ED).ObjectiveTo establish NSIs key to emergency nursing from existing published literature.MethodsTen databases were searched as well as grey literature and Google Scholar in the development of data for this integrative review. Articles underwent a title and abstract review to establish inclusion/exclusion suitability followed by a full text critical appraisal. Data were extracted, synthesized, and analyzed using a structured process.ResultsTwenty-eight emergency nursing NSIs were identified from three included studies, with little consensus across the literature. The NSIs established in the literature reflected a broad range of non-specific technical skills. Overall, the quality of the included articles was low due to factors including study design and high risk of bias.ConclusionsThe constrained range of NSIs and the limited literature exploring the outcomes of emergency nursing care perhaps reflects a wide ranging and seemingly evolving scope of emergency nurses. Further research is needed to delineate emergency nursing NSI, perhaps underpinned by a clear definition of an emergency nurse in terms of capability statements, core skills and defining attributes.  相似文献

In this article, a critique of cancer nursing literature on the issue of sexuality is presented, with particular reference to literature on cancers common to women. The paper begins with an account of two competing perspectives on sexuality. The first is a version of sexuality rooted in sexology, underpinned by biomedical science that makes a claim to having identified 'normal' sexuality. The second is a version of sexuality developed within feminist scholarship that tends to reject biological determinism as a basis for understanding sexuality, instead favouring constructionist perspectives, with the socio-political context of sexual relations problematised. The focus of the article then shifts to cancer nursing literature on sexuality that deals primarily with cancers common to women, to appraise the extent to which either of the above perspectives on sexuality is invoked. Within this body of nursing knowledge, I argue that there has largely been an uncritical endorsement of biomedical constructions of sexuality, rooted in orthodox sexology, with a dominant focus on sexual functioning and on sexual rehabilitation for women with cancer. Moreover, in this knowledge base, phallocentric heterosexuality over and above other forms of sexual expression is privileged, and the socio-political context of unequal gender power relations is largely excluded. References to the social sphere as a dimension of nursing care are focused almost exclusively on maintaining normality, and reflect the emphasis on functional restoration. The largely individualistic, uncritical and biocentric emphasis in this literature may serve inadvertently to reinforce and maintain existing gender inequalities in heterosexual relationships. Finally, I consider the difficulties for oncology nurses in dealing with contradictory truth claims or conventional wisdoms about sexuality from the disparate disciplines of which holism is comprised.  相似文献

The purpose of this scoping review is to examine the nature of the interprofessional education (IPE) discussion that the Canadian nursing profession is having within the Canadian peer-reviewed nursing literature. An electronic database search of CINAHL was conducted using a modified Arksey & O’Malley scoping review framework. Peer-reviewed, English-language articles published in Canadian nursing journals from January 1981 to February 2016 were retrieved. Articles were included if they discussed IPE, or described an educational activity that met our conceptual definition of IPE. A total of 88 articles were screened, and 11 articles were eligible for analysis. Analysis revealed that this body of literature does not seem to be purposefully engaging Canadian nurses in a critical discourse about the role of IPE. The majority of articles located were reflective or commentaries. At the time of this review, there was a paucity of theoretically informed empirical research articles on IPE in the nursing literature. While IPE may be viewed by some critical scholars as a means of shifting the control of healthcare delivery traditionally held by medicine to other professions, our results suggest that this may not be the case in the Canadian nursing profession.  相似文献

Kuhn's thoughts on scientific revolutions, published in 1962, had a huge impact on many disciplines. In order to gain a foothold in their professional discipline, nursing scholars in the early stage aggressively borrowed knowledge from other disciplines, including Kuhn's outstanding thoughts on scientific revolutions, such as paradigm, normal science, and anomaly, that frequently appeared in scholarly articles in nursing. This article, therefore, first introduces the evolutional historical background to nursing knowledge. Secondly, it elucidates Kuhn's paradigm and scientific revolutions. Lastly, it reflects upon and analyzes nursing knowledge using Kuhn's paradigm and scientific revolutions.  相似文献

In Taiwan, few articles have been published that describe case management education for nurses. This article reviews case management literature and aims to introduce case management definitions, a comparison between the nursing process and the case management process, current case management educational programs and core content for case management education. Finally, suggestions identified from the literature review for Taiwanese nursing education will be discussed. On the basis of evidence of case management's effectiveness in saving health costs and providing better quality of care, case management strategies are currently being implemented in a variety of settings with different populations under a range of conditions. Case management services are assisted by knowledgeable and skilled healthcare professionals called case managers. With their background of professional knowledge and skills and their familiarity with the nursing process, nurses have been the main case managers. A case manager's educational preparation is the key to successful case management. In other countries, many formal and informal case management educational programs have become available to prepare the nursing profession for the demands of the job market. Six essential knowledge areas and three categories of skills are identified for case management education. Developing a formal case management education program in nursing schools and offering continuing professional education for nurse case managers are suggested for Taiwanese nursing education to prepare nurses for case management. Collaboration between nursing academia and nursing practice might be considered an effective strategy to promote the development of case management practice in nursing.  相似文献

Holistic nursing is a discipline focused on healing the whole person and dedicated to understanding and supporting the premise of holistic health of the patient and promoting healing in practitioners, patients, families, social groups, and communities. An explication of knowledge related to caring and healing in the human health experience and in holistic nursing is informed by the individual nurse's paradigmatic stance. Holistic nursing research is complex and focuses on healing, particularly healing of self, others, systems, and communities at large. This article discusses the competing paradigmatic perspectives, theoretic perspectives supporting holistic research, fundamental patterns of knowing and knowledge generation, a framework for holistic research, and the challenges of conducting holistic research. Recommendations for future research agenda are presented.  相似文献

Citation analysis of the maternal/child nursing literature   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Few bibliometric studies have been done of the nursing literature; however, much can be learned about nursing and specialty areas of clinical practice by examining the articles published in nursing journals. The purposes of this study were to describe the extent of research, clinical, and evidence-based practice articles published in maternal/child nursing journals and the information sources used to develop that literature. A total of 112 articles and 2571 citations from three randomly selected maternal/child nursing journals were analyzed. Nearly half (n=51, 46%) of all articles were reports of original research studies. Research publications were cited most frequently including research studies published in medical journals (n=687, 26.7% of all the cited documents), followed by research studies published in nursing journals (n=371, 14.4%) and journals in other disciplines. The maternal/child nursing journals examined in this study are disseminating research findings to nurses for use in clinical practice.  相似文献

Many definitions and conceptual frameworks were developed on fatigue related to health problems, mostly from scientific research among cancer patients. From a summary of a literature review, the first objective of this article is to describe different theoretical perspectives on the concept of fatigue. The second objective is to elaborate an integrative conceptual framework from the definitions chosen. The third objective is to describe different coping strategies and nursing interventions in relation with the conceptual framework. The literature review includes studies on fatigue in general with an emphasis on cancer related fatigue in particular. The review was conducted from 3 scientific data bases, Medline, Cinahl and Psychlit, for the last twenty years. The relevance of the conceptual framework for nursing intervention is discussed.  相似文献
