Background and aimsDairy products are a very diverse food group with multiple effects on the cardiac health of men and women. The aim of this work was to evaluate the sex-specific association between dairy products (total and subtypes) and 10-year first fatal/nonfatal cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence.Methods and resultsIn 2001–2002, n = 1514 men and n = 1528 women (>18 years old) from greater Athens area, Greece, were enrolled. Dietary assessment was based on a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Dairy product consumption was examined in relation to 10-year CVD incidence. Follow-up (2011–2012) was achieved in n = 2020 participants (n = 317 CVD cases). Ranking from lowest (<1 serving/day) to highest (>2 servings/day) total dairy intake, CVD incidence in men was 17.8%, 15.0%, and 10.9% (p = 0.41), while in women it was 14%, 6.0%, and 5.7% (p = 0.02). Multiadjusted analysis revealed that total dairy intake protected against CVD only in women [Hazard Ratio (HR) = 0.48 and 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) (0.23, 0.90)], irrespective of the fat content. Further analysis revealed that only fermented products (yogurt and cheese), protected against CVD. For per 200 g/day yogurt consumption, CVD risk was 20%–30% lower with this claim being more evident in women, while for per 30 g/day cheese intake, about 5% lower risk was observed particularly in men. As for butter, nonsignificant associations were highlighted. These associations were mainly retained in the case of hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance, and systemic inflammation.ConclusionsThis work provides incentives for researchers to elucidate the diversity of ingredients and mechanisms through which dairy products exert their effect on cardiac health separately for men and women.  相似文献

Background and ObjectivesThe presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in childhood is a significant risk factor for later cardiovascular disease (CVD). Recent data showed temporal decreases in a sex- and race/ethnicity-specific MetS severity z-score among U.S. adolescents. Our goal was to characterize the relationship of this MetS z-score with other CVD risk indicators and assess their temporal trends and lifestyle influences.MethodsWe analyzed 4837 participants aged 12–20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey by 2-year waves from 1999 to 2012. We used linear regression to compare MetS z-score and dietary factors with serum levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), apolipoprotein-B (ApoB), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and uric acid.ResultsMetS severity z-score was positively correlated with LDL, ApoB, hsCRP, and uric acid measurements (p < 0.0001 for all). These correlations held true among individual racial/ethnic groups. LDL, ApoB, and hsCRP measurements decreased over time among U.S. adolescents (p = 0.002, p < 0.0001, and p = 0.024, respectively). Saturated fat consumption was positively correlated with LDL (p = 0.005) and ApoB (p = 0.012) and inversely related to serum uric acid (p = 0.001). Total caloric intake was inversely related to LDL (p = 0.003) and serum uric acid (p = 0.003). Unsaturated fat, carbohydrate, and protein consumption were not related to LDL, ApoB, hsCRP, or serum uric acid.ConclusionsThere is a positive correlation between MetS severity and all four CVD risk indicators studied. LDL, ApoB, and hsCRP showed favorable temporal trends, which could be related to similar trends in MetS z-score. These data support the importance of considering multiple inter-related factors in clinical CVD risk assessment.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to assess if group size is associated with weight loss outcomes among participants in an adapted diabetes prevention program.MethodsAdults at high-risk (N = 841) for CVD and diabetes were enrolled in the lifestyle intervention in 2011. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to identify if group size (smaller group < 16 participants; larger group ≥16 participants) was independently associated with weight loss outcomes among participants.ResultsIn the bivariate analyses, participants in the smaller groups compared to those in the larger groups were significantly more likely to have a higher baseline body mass index, to attend fewer intervention sessions, and less likely to self-monitor their fat intake for ≥14 weeks, and to have lost less weight during the core intervention (5.1 kg [SD 4.7] versus 5.8 kg [4.5]). However, analysis adjusting for age, sex, baseline BMI, achievement of the physical activity goal, number of weeks self-monitoring fat intake, and group size, found only two factors to be independently associated with achievement of the 7% weight loss goal: frequency of self-monitoring of fat intake and achievement of the physical activity goal.ConclusionsOur findings indicate that intensive lifestyle intervention goals can be achieved as effectively with large or small groups.  相似文献

ObjectivesThere is absolute lacking of evidences on atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and its association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among postmenopausal women of Bangladesh. This prompted us to investigate this association between AIP and CVD risk factors among postmenopausal women in a rural setting.MethodsThis cross-sectional study recruited 265 postmenopausal women aged 40–70 years who visited a primary health-care center of Bangladesh. We used modified STEP-wise approach for the Surveillance of Noncommunicable diseases risk factors questionnaire of the World Health Organization to collect data on sociodemographic and behavioral risk factors. Physical measurements were carried out following the method described in the ‘noncommunicable disease risk factors survey Bangladesh 2010’. AIP was determined by the logarithmic transformation of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein ratio, and association with CVD risk factors were examined by multiple linear regression analysis.ResultsOverall 35.5% respondents had a high risk level of AIP with a mean of 0.16 ± 0.25. After adjusting the confounders, CVD risk factors including duration of menopause (β = 0.606, p = 0.043), waist–hip ratio (β = 0.165, p = 0.003), 2-h plasma glucose (β = 0.118, p = 0.04), total cholesterol (β = 1.082, p < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (β = −1.044, p < 0.001), and metabolic equivalent of tasks (β = −0.171, p = 0.003) showed a significant association with AIP.ConclusionHigh AIP and its significant association with CVD risk factors demand proper lifestyle intervention for postmenopausal women of Bangladesh.  相似文献

We used the Archimedes Model, a mathematical simulation model (Model) to estimate the clinical- and cost-effectiveness of using LDL particle concentration (LDL-P) as an adjunct or alternative to LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) to guide statin therapy. LDL-P by NMR has been shown to be a better measure of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk than LDL-C, and may therefore be a better gauge of the need for and response to statin treatment. Using the Model, we conducted a virtual clinical trial comparing the use of LDL-C alone, LDL-P alone, and LDL-C and LDL-P together to guide treatment in the general adult population, and in high-risk, dyslipidemic subpopulations. In the general population, the 5-year major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) relative risk reduction (RRR) of LDL-P alone compared to the control arm (LDL-C alone) was 5.0% (95% CI, 4.7–5.3; p < .0001); using both LDL-C and LDL-P (dual markers) led to 3.0% RRR compared to the control arm (95% CI, 2.8–3.3; p < .0001). For individuals with diabetes, the RRR was 7.3% (95% CI, 6.4–8.2; p < .0001) for LDL-P alone and 6.9% for dual markers (95% CI, 6.1–7.8; both, p < .0001).  相似文献

Background and aimsArterial stiffness is an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and all-cause mortality and may be differentially affected by dietary fatty acid (FA) intake. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between FA consumption and arterial stiffness and blood pressure in a community-based population.Methods and resultsThe Caerphilly Prospective Study recruited 2398 men, aged 45–59 years, who were followed up at 5-year intervals for a mean of 17.8-years (n 787). A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire estimated intakes of total, saturated, mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids (SFA, MUFA, PUFA). Multiple regression models investigated associations between intakes of FA at baseline with aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV), augmentation index (AIx), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) and pulse pressure after a 17.8-year follow-up – as well as cross-sectional relationships with metabolic markers. After adjustment, higher SFA consumption at baseline was associated with higher SBP (P = 0.043) and DBP (P = 0.002) and after a 17.8-year follow-up was associated with a 0.51 m/s higher aPWV (P = 0.006). After adjustment, higher PUFA consumption at baseline was associated with lower SBP (P = 0.022) and DBP (P = 0.036) and after a 17.8-year follow-up was associated with a 0.63 m/s lower aPWV (P = 0.007).ConclusionThis study suggests that consumption of SFA and PUFA have opposing effects on arterial stiffness and blood pressure. Importantly, this study suggests that consumption of FA is an important risk factor for arterial stiffness and CVD.  相似文献

Background and aimsLimited evidence suggests habitual dairy consumption to be protective against metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) and type 2 diabetes among older adults. We assessed the association of baseline consumption of dairy products with the incidence of MetSyn and type 2 diabetes among a cohort of Australian adults aged 49 years and over.Methods and resultsA validated 145-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to assess food and nutrient intake at baseline. Ten-year incidence of MetSyn and type 2 diabetes were obtained from 1807 and 1824 subjects respectively. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated by discrete time logistic regression modelling. Compared with subjects in the lowest intake quartile of regular fat dairy products, those in the highest quartile had a 59% lower risk of MetSyn (multivariate adjusted OR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.23–0.71; ptrend = 0.004), after adjustment for risk factors. Among obese subjects, an association between a high intake of regular fat dairy foods and reduced risk of type 2 diabetes was also found (age and sex adjusted OR 0.37; 95% CI: 0.16–0.88; ptrend = 0.030), but the association did not persist after adjustment for additional confounders. There was no association between total dairy consumption and risk of MetSyn or type 2 diabetes.ConclusionsWe found an inverse association between regular fat dairy consumption and risk of MetSyn among Australian older adults. Further studies are warranted to examine the association between weight status, dairy consumption and risk of type 2 diabetes.  相似文献

Background and aimsThis multicentre European study evaluated, in a young-to-middle-aged healthy population without carotid atherosclerosis, the gender-related differences in carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and its short-term (3-year) progression, and whether these differences are related to different vascular ageing rate, cardiovascular risk profile or different susceptibility to family predisposition to cardiovascular diseases (CVD).Methods and results366 men and 422 women (age between 30 and 60 years) underwent B-mode carotid ultrasound at baseline and after 3-year follow-up period. IMT in 3 carotid segments was higher in men than in women (p < 0.0001 for all segments). When evaluated according to age decade, differences between men and women disappeared in the 6th decade, as in this decade a 3-year IMT progression rate accelerated in women (p < 0.05 as compared to the 4th and 5th age decade). Age was a major determinant of baseline all-segment IMT in women; in men all-segment IMT was influenced by age and LDL-cholesterol. IMT progression did not correlate with established cardiovascular risk factors, their short-term changes or family predisposition to CVD. Yet, a 3-year IMT progression in common carotid artery (CCA) was higher in men (p = 0.01) and women (p < 0.01) in whom relative Framingham risk increased during the corresponding period.ConclusionThis study provides reference values on IMT and its short-term progression in healthy young-to-middle-aged population, and demonstrates gender-related differences in the susceptibility of carotid wall to ageing and LDL-cholesterol. Increase in Framingham risk accelerated a short-term CCA IMT progression rate in both genders, whereas family predisposition to CVD did not influence carotid IMT.  相似文献

Background and aimsVitamin A affects inflammation and immune function and is thus a factor of interest in relation to cardiovascular disease (CVD). As vitamin A circulates in the plasma in the form of retinol, this study aims to describe the relationship between plasma retinol and the 5-year incidence of CVD mortality.Methods and resultsCommunity-dwelling adults (n = 441, 45% with type 2 diabetes) were recruited in Melbourne, assessed at baseline and followed for 5 years. At baseline, CVD risk factors were assessed by clinical evaluation, by personal lifestyle questionnaire and from biochemistry (plasma fasting glucose, lipids, total homocysteine, C-reactive protein, retinol and carotenoids plus the urinary albumin excretion rate over 24 h.). Dietary intake was assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire. CVD mortality over 5-years was determined by consulting state or national registries. The majority of participants had adequate plasma retinol concentrations (≥30 μg/dL). The final Cox regression model indicated that those in the highest tertile of plasma retinol (mean ± SD) 76 ± 14 μg/dL) had a significantly lower risk of 5-year CVD mortality (hazard ratio 0.27 [95% confidence interval 0.11, 0.68], P = 0.005), an effect that was not readily explained in terms of traditional CVD risk factors or dietary intake.ConclusionIn well-nourished older Australian adults, plasma retinol was inversely associated with CVD mortality via mechanisms apparently unrelated to established CVD risk factors and dietary intake.  相似文献

Background and aimsPredictive and prognostic ability of muscle mass in CVD settings is increasingly discussed. The gender-specific effect of skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) on 10-year recurrent fatal/non fatal cardiovascular disease (CVD) event of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients was evaluated.Methods and resultsIn 2006–2009, n = 1000 consecutive patients (n = 222 women), hospitalized at the First Cardiology Clinic of Athens with ACS diagnosis and with symptoms and left ventricular function indicative of heart failure were selected. SMI was created to reflect skeletal muscle mass through appendicular skeletal muscle mass (indirectly calculated through population formulas) divided by body mass index (BMI). In the 10-year follow-up (2016), 55% of ACS patients experienced recurrent fatal/non fatal CVD events (53% in women vs.62% in men, p = 0.04). Patients in the 2nd SMI tertile (mostly overweight) had 10% lower risk for CVD recurrence (women:men rate ratio = 0.87) over their counterparts in the 1st (mostly normalweight) and 3rd tertile (mostly obese). Multivariate analysis revealed that ACS patients in the 2nd SMI tertile presented 46% and 85% lower CVD event risk over their counterparts in the 1st tertile (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 0.54, 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI) 0.30, 0.96, p = 0.002) and 3rd tertile (HR = 1.85, 95%CI 1.05, 2.94, p = 0.03). Gender-based analysis revealed that this trend remained significant only in women. Inflammatory markers had strong confounding effect.ConclusionA U-shape association between SMI and 10-year CVD event especially in women was highlighted. This work reveals gender-specific remarks for “obesity-lean paradox” in secondary prevention, implying that high muscle mass accompanied by obesity and excess adiposity may not guarantee better prognosis.  相似文献

Background and aimsPeople with type 1 diabetes (T1D) present lipoprotein disturbances that could contribute to their increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. We evaluated the relationship between lipoprotein alterations and atherosclerosis in patients with T1D.Methods and resultsCross-sectional study in subjects with T1D, without previous CVD, but high-risk (≥40 years, nephropathy, or ≥10 years of evolution of diabetes with another risk factor). The presence of plaque (intima-media thickness ≥1.5 mm) in the different carotid segments was determined by ultrasound. The advanced lipoprotein profile was analysed by magnetic resonance imaging (1H NMR). We included 189 patients (42% women, 47.8 ± 10.7 years, duration of diabetes 27.3 ± 10.1 years, HbA1c 7.5% [[7], [8]]). Those with carotid plaques (35%) were older, with longer diabetes duration, had a higher prevalence of hypertension, and showed lower and smaller LDL particles (LDL-P) and HDL particles (HDL-P), but higher VLDL particles (VLDL-P). Some LDL, HDL and VLDL-related parameters were associated with atherosclerosis in sex, age and statin use adjusted models (p < 0.05), but after adjusting for multiple confounders, including conventional lipid parameters, only HDL-P (OR 0.440 [0.204–0.951]; p = 0.037), medium HDL-P (OR 0.754 [0.590–0.963]; p = 0.024), HDL-P cholesterol content (OR 0.692 [0.495–0.968]; p = 0.032), 1H NMR LDL-P number/conventional LDL-cholesterol (OR 1.144 [1.026–1.275]; p = 0.015), and 1H NMR non-HDL particle number/conventional non-HDL-cholesterol ratios (OR 1.178 [1.019–1.361], p = 0.026) remained associated with atherosclerosis.ConclusionsIn adults with T1D at high-risk, variables related to HDL, LDL and total atherogenic particle number are independently associated with preclinical atherosclerosis. Advanced lipoprotein profiling could be used to identify those at the highest risk of CVD.  相似文献

AimsTo investigate the effect of a computer-supported indirect-form lifestyle-modification program using Lifestyle Intervention Support Software for Diabetes Prevention (LISS-DP), as a clinically feasible strategy for primary prevention, on diet and physical activity habits in adults with a family history of type 2 diabetes.MethodsThis was a two-arm, randomized controlled trial: (1) lifestyle intervention (LI) group (n = 70); (2) control (n = 71). Healthy adults aged 30–60 years with a history of type 2 diabetes among their first-degree relatives were recruited. LI group received three times of lifestyle intervention using LISS-DP during six-month intervention period via mail.ResultsLifestyle intervention group showed significantly greater decrease in energy intake six months after baseline, compared to control (−118.31 and −24.79 kcal/day, respectively, p = 0.0099, Cohen's d = 0.22), though the difference disappeared 1 year after from baseline. No difference was found in physical activity energy expenditure.ConclusionsA computer-based, non-face-to-face lifestyle intervention was effective on dietary habits, only during the intervention period. Further examination of the long-term effects of such intervention and physical activity is required.  相似文献

Background and aimsFew studies have described the association between time-of-day of macronutrient intake and diabetes. This study examined the prospective association between time-of-day and nutrient composition of eating occasions in relation to diabetes incidence in the 1946 British birth cohort.Methods and resultsThe study included 1618 survey members who completed dietary assessment at age 43 (1989) and for whom data on glycosylated haemoglobin at age 53 years (1999) were available. Diet was assessed using 5d estimated diaries, divided into seven meal slots: breakfast, mid-morning, lunch, mid-afternoon, dinner, late evening and extras. Diabetes was defined by glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) ≥ 6.5% or diabetes medication use. The association between time-of-day of macronutrient intake at age 43 years and diabetes at age 53 years was assessed using logistic multivariate nutrient density models after adjustment for potential confounders. There were 66 cases of diabetes at age 53 years. Survey members with diabetes obtained 50.4% of their energy from carbohydrate at breakfast compared to 55.9% in survey members without diabetes (P = 0.001). Increasing carbohydrate intake at breakfast at the expense of fat was related to lower odds ratio (OR) of diabetes (OR = 0.86; 95%CI = 0.79–0.93; P < 0.001). This relationship was attenuated after adjustment for body mass index and waist circumference.ConclusionIncreasing energy intake from carbohydrate at the expense of fat at breakfast is inversely associated with 10-year diabetes incidence. However, further studies are required to elucidate whether the type or source of carbohydrates or fat influences the above association.  相似文献

Background and aimsEpidemiologic and biological evidence supports an inverse association between polyphenol consumption and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, no previous studies have prospectively evaluated the relationship between polyphenol intake and the incidence of CVD in such a comprehensive way. The aim was to evaluate the association between intakes of total polyphenol and polyphenol subgroups, and the risk of major cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke or death from cardiovascular causes) in the PREDIMED study.Methods and resultsThe present work is an observational study within the PREDIMED trial. Over an average of 4.3 years of follow-up, there were 273 confirmed cases of CVD among the 7172 participants (96.3%) who completed a validated 137-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) at baseline. Polyphenol consumption was calculated by matching food consumption data from the FFQ with the Phenol-Explorer database on polyphenol content of each reported food. After multivariate adjustment, a 46% reduction in risk of CVD risk was observed comparing Q5 vs. Q1 of total polyphenol intake (HR = 0.54; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.33–0.91; P-trend = 0.04). The polyphenols with the strongest inverse associations were flavanols (HR = 0.40; CI 0.23–0.72; P-trend = 0.003), lignans (HR = 0.51; CI 0.30–0.86; P-trend = 0.007), and hydroxybenzoic acids (HR = 0.47; CI 0.26–0.86; P-trend 0.02).ConclusionGreater intake of polyphenols, especially from lignans, flavanols, and hydroxybenzoic acids, was associated with decreased CVD risk. Clinical trials are needed to confirm this effect and establish accurate dietary recommendations. BackgroundDietary intake of long-chain n-3 PUFA (LCn3FA) among Japanese is generally higher than that in Western populations. However, little is known whether an inverse association of LCn3FA with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk exists in a population with higher LCn3FA intake.ObjectiveTo investigate the association between LCn3FA intake and the long-term risk of CVDs in a Japanese general population.MethodsWe followed-up a total of 9190 individuals (56.2% women, mean age 50.0 years) randomly selected from 300 areas across Japan and free from CVDs at baseline. Dietary LCn3FA intake was estimated using household weighed food records. Cox models were used to calculate multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and confidence intervals (CI) according to sex specific quartiles of LCn3FA intake.ResultsDuring 24-year follow-up (192,897 person-years), 879 cardiovascular deaths were observed. The median daily intake of LCn3FA was 0.37% kcal (0.86 g/day). Adjusted HR for CVD mortality was lower in the highest quartile of LCn3FA intake (HR 0.80; 95% CI 0.66–0.96) compared with the lowest quartile, and the trend was statistically significant (P = 0.038). The similar but statistically non-significant trends were observed for coronary heart disease death and stroke death. In analyses by age groups, the inverse associations of LCn3FA intake with the risk of total CVD death and stroke death were significant in younger individuals (30–59 years at baseline).ConclusionLCn3FA intake was inversely and independently associated the long-term risk of total CVD mortality in a representative sample of Japanese with high LCn3FA intake.  相似文献

ObjectivePerivascular fat through the secretion of paracrine and pro-inflammatory mediators may play a role in obesity-mediated vascular disease. We sought to examine associations between adipose tissue depots immediately surrounding the thoracic aorta, metabolic risk factors, and vascular calcification.MethodsIn participants free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) from the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort who underwent computed tomography (n = 1067, mean age 59 years, 56.1% women), thoracic peri-aortic fat depots were quantified. Visceral abdominal tissue (VAT) and calcification of the thoracic and abdominal aorta were also measured.ResultsPeri-aortic fat depots were correlated with body mass index, waist circumference (WC), VAT (all p < 0.0001), hypertension (p = 0.007), low HDL (p < 0.0001), serum triglycerides (p < 0.0001), impaired fasting glucose (p = 0.005), and diabetes (p = 0.02). These associations generally remained significant after adjustment for BMI and WC (all p-values < 0.05), but not after VAT adjustment. Thoracic aortic fat was associated with thoracic calcification in models containing VAT (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.01–1.71, p = 0.04), but was not significant after adjustment for CVD risk factors (OR 1.16, 95% CI 0.88–1.51, p = 0.30). Thoracic aortic fat, however, was associated with abdominal aortic calcification (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.11–1.98, p = 0.008) and coronary artery calcification (OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.09–1.98, p = 0.001) even in models including CVD risk factors and VAT.ConclusionsThoracic peri-aortic fat is associated with measures of adiposity, metabolic risk factors, and coronary and abdominal aortic calcification.  相似文献

Background and aimsGreat discrepancies exist in results from studies examining the association between dietary patterns and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in different populations. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the Australian Dietary Guidelines (ADG) 2013, Mediterranean-DASH diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND), Paleolithic and Okinawan dietary patterns and CVD respectively.Methods and resultsIn this cross-sectional secondary analysis of the 2011-12 Australian Health Survey, adults who self-reported physician-diagnosed CVD, completed two multiple-pass 24 h recalls and had no missing data on all confounders were analysed (weighted n = 5376; 295 CVD cases). Dietary intake was transformed to represent usual intake by the multiple source method. The score of Healthy Eating Index for Australian Adults (HEIFA-2013) was adopted for ADG 2013, while the scores of MIND, Paleolithic and Okinawan dietary patterns were constructed by separating the intake of each predefined food and nutrient into quintiles. The associations between the dietary patterns (as tertiles of scores) and CVD were examined using binary logistic regression adjusted for significant cardiovascular risk factors. Higher adherence to the Okinawan diet pattern was significantly associated with a reduced prevalence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) (OR per unit increase in dietary pattern score: 0.94, 95%CI: 0.90–0.98). Comparing its extreme tertiles, the OR was 0.49 (95%CI: 0.29–0.82; ptrend < 0.01). The associations between HEIFA-2013, MIND and Paleolithic diet patterns and CVD were insignificant.ConclusionThe findings suggested an inverse association between adherence to Okinawan dietary pattern and prevalence of IHD in Australian adults.  相似文献

Background and aimsInflammation plays a role in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Elevated levels of the inflammatory marker, C-reactive protein (CRP), are cross-sectionally associated with traditional CVD risk factors and are being considered as an emerging CVD risk factor. In a secondary data analysis, we examined changes in CRP and several CVD risk factors after one-year diet and physical activity interventions to assess whether CRP changed concurrently with other risk factors, or was independent of the traditional risk factors.Methods and resultsData were analyzed from 143 men and 133 women with dyslipidemia who were randomized to one-year interventions of low-fat diet only, physical activity only, diet plus physical activity, or control. Plasma high-sensitivity CRP, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), fasting and 2-hr blood glucose and insulin, blood pressure (BP), and waist circumference were obtained at baseline and follow-up. Multiple linear regression models were used to predict CRP change based on other risk factor changes, controlling for age, race, alcohol intake, and hormone replacement therapy. Treatment groups were combined for analysis. Baseline mean (SD) CRP levels were 1.3 ± 1.3 (men) and 1.9 ± 1.8 mg/L (women), with mean changes of ?0.11 ± 1.3 and ?0.17 ± 1.5 mg/L, respectively. Plasma CRP change was negatively associated with TG change in men (p = 0.003) and women (p = 0.05), positively associated with change in systolic BP in men (p = 0.01), but was not associated with changes in the other risk factors.ConclusionDietary and/or physical activity induced changes in CRP may be largely independent of traditional CVD risk factors in persons with dyslipidemia.  相似文献

Background and aimA high intake of dairy has been linked to lower risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The relationship between dairy intake and glucose metabolism is still not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between the intake of total dairy and dairy subgroups and T2D and measures of glucose metabolism.Methods and resultsA total of 5953 Danish men and women aged 30–60 years without baseline diabetes or cardiovascular diseases were included in this prospective analysis. The dairy intake at baseline was categorised into low-fat dairy, full-fat dairy, milk and milk products, cheese and fermented dairy. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h plasma glucose (2hPG), HbA1c, insulin resistance (HOMA2-IR) and beta-cell function (HOMA2-B) were considered at 5-year follow-up. In the maximally-adjusted model (demographics, lifestyle factors, dietary factors and waist), cheese intake was inversely associated with 2hPG (β = ?0.048, 95% CI ?0.095; ?0.001). Fermented dairy intake was inversely associated with FPG (β = ?0.028, 95% CI ?0.048; ?0.008) and HbA1c (β = ?0.016, 95% CI ?0.030; ?0.001). Total dairy intake and the dairy subgroups were not related to HOMA-IR and HOMA-B in the maximally-adjusted model. Furthermore, there was no significant association between intake of total dairy or any of the dairy subgroups and incidence of T2D.ConclusionOur data suggest a modest beneficial effect of cheese and fermented dairy on glucose regulation measures; however, this did not translate into a significant association with incident T2D.  相似文献
