Despite some evidence of greater age-related deterioration of the brain in males than in females, gender differences in rates of cognitive aging have proved inconsistent. The present study employed web-based methodology to collect data from people aged 20-65 years (109,612 men; 88,509 women). As expected, men outperformed women on tests of mental rotation and line angle judgment, whereas women outperformed men on tests of category fluency and object location memory. Performance on all tests declined with age but significantly more so for men than for women. Heterosexuals of each gender generally outperformed bisexuals and homosexuals on tests where that gender was superior; however, there were no clear interactions between age and sexual orientation for either gender. At least for these particular tests from young adulthood to retirement, age is kinder to women than to men, but treats heterosexuals, bisexuals, and homosexuals just the same. 相似文献

Analyses of three waves (6 years) of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health data explored the prevalence and
stability of sexual orientation and whether these two parameters varied by biologic sex, sexual orientation component (romantic
attraction, sexual behavior, sexual identity), and degree of component. Prevalence rates for nonheterosexuality varied between
1 and 15% and depended on biologic sex (higher among females), sexual orientation component (highest for romantic attraction),
degree of component (highest if “mostly heterosexual” was included with identity), and the interaction of these (highest for
nonheterosexual identity among females). Although kappa statistics testing for temporal stability across waves were significant,
they failed to reach acceptable levels of agreement and could be largely attributable to the stability of opposite-sex rather
than same-sex attraction and behavior. Migration over time among sexual orientation components was in both directions, from
opposite-sex attraction and behavior to same-sex attraction and behavior and vice versa. To assess sexual orientation, investigators
should measure multiple components over time or abandon the general notion of sexual orientation and measure only those components
relevant for the research question. 相似文献

Sexual differentiation of the human brain has been suggested to take place through exposure to sex steroids during intrauterine
development. Animal experiments have shown that interference in this process by underfeeding of the mother can result in feminization
of the male offspring. We explored the possible effects of prenatal exposure to famine on sexual orientation and gender identity
in humans. We used the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid to assess sexual orientation and also assessed gender identity in a group
of 380 men and 472 women who were born as term singletons around the time of the 1944–1945 Dutch famine. Prenatal exposure
to famine did not affect sexual orientation in men or in women. Three people indicated having some gender identity problems:
one woman born before the famine and one man and woman exposed to famine in late gestation. In men, a later birth order was
associated with a non-exclusively heterosexual identification. In conclusion, we found no evidence for a significant association
between exposure to famine in utero and altered sexual orientation and gender identity. The small sample size of participants
with non-exclusively heterosexual identification (possibly due to underreporting of homosexuality) may have reduced our power
to detect any differences. 相似文献

PurposeTo determine whether peer drunkenness, parental knowledge about their adolescent's whereabouts and behaviors, and depressive symptoms contribute to sexual orientation disparities in high-risk drinking behaviors; if they do, they would be potential intervention targets.MethodsLongitudinal survey data from 2,051 adolescents who participated in the NEXT Generation Health Study were analyzed. Latent growth curve and longitudinal path analyses were used to test for indirect effects linking sexual orientation in 11th grade (3.4% males and 8.4% females were sexual minorities) to past 30-day heavy episodic drinking (HED) over 6 years and past year high-intensity binge drinking at 4 years after high school.ResultsSexual minority males were not more likely to engage in high-risk drinking than heterosexual males. In contrast, sexual minority females were more likely than heterosexual females to engage in HED when they were in 11th grade (Odds Ratio = 2.83, 95% confidence interval = 1.43, 5.61), in part because of lower parental knowledge. Sexual minority females also had higher depressive symptoms during the transition from adolescence to young adulthood, which in turn was associated with greater risk of high-intensity binge drinking in young adulthood. Peer drunkenness was a strong risk factor for HED and high-intensity binge drinking among both males and females.DiscussionSexual minority females reported lower levels of parental knowledge during adolescence and higher levels of depressive symptoms during the transition to young adulthood than heterosexual females. Both factors were associated with high-risk drinking behavior, suggesting developmentally sensitive opportunities to mitigate sexual orientation disparities in high-risk drinking. 相似文献

PurposeSexual and gender minority youth (SGM), an umbrella term encompassing gay, bisexual, and transgender youth, experience disproportionately high rates of new HIV infections, and recent advances in biomedical HIV prevention modalities hold promise in reducing new infections. However, the extent to which SGM youth are aware of and willing to use these modalities is unknown.MethodsUsing data from the Survey of Today's Adolescents Relationships and Transitions, we analyze awareness of and willingness to take HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), nonoccupational HIV post-exposure prophylaxis, and rectal microbicides among adolescent sexual minority males aged 13–18 years and transgender youth aged 13–24 years.ResultsOverall, we found a majority of our respondents were not aware of any of these prevention modalities. Across both subsamples, age and outness to a health care provider were associated with increased PrEP awareness, and any anal sex was associated with PrEP willingness.ConclusionsThese findings highlight the importance of provider education on how to discuss SGM issues with patients and educate them about HIV prevention options. 相似文献

This longitudinal study of 72 newlywed couples examined the effects of spouses' expectancies for their sexual satisfaction and changes in their sexual frequency on changes in their sexual satisfaction over 6 months. At Time 1 (baseline), both spouses reported their levels of sexual satisfaction and sexual frequency and completed a 7-day diary of their expectancies for sexual satisfaction. At Time 2 (6 months later), spouses again reported their sexual satisfaction and sexual frequency. Based on evidence that women's sexual satisfaction is more contextually based, wives' initial sexual satisfaction expectancies were expected to predict changes in their reports of sexual satisfaction. Based on evidence that men's sexual satisfaction is more grounded in the physical aspects of sex, in contrast, changes in sexual frequency were expected to predict changes in husbands' sexual satisfaction. Both hypotheses were supported. Specifically, controlling for marital satisfaction, length of marriage, and age, wives', but not husbands', sexual satisfaction expectancies were positively associated with changes in their sexual satisfaction, whereas changes in sexual frequency were positively associated with changes in husbands', but not wives', reports of sexual satisfaction. Gender differences in the strength of both effects were significant. Of note, none of the observed effects differed as a function of whether couples lived together before marriage. Implications for theories of gender differences in sexuality, theories of expectancy confirmation, and models of sex and marital therapy are discussed. 相似文献

BackgroundParents and early care and education (ECE) are the key influencers of young children’s diets, but there is limited information about how each contribute to children’s overall diet quality.ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine what proportion of children’s dietary intake occurs within the ECE setting and whether diet quality is higher at ECE centers and, consequently, on weekdays than weekends.DesignThis cross-sectional analysis of a larger cluster randomized controlled trial used multiple 24-hour dietary intakes measured through a combination of the Dietary Observation in Child Care protocol and parent-reported food diaries.Participants/settingParticipants (N=840) included children aged 3 to 4 years enrolled in ECE centers in central North Carolina for whom 24-hour dietary intake was captured via observation of meals and snacks consumed at ECE and parent-report of all remaining meals and snacks. Data were collected from 2015 to 2016.Main outcome measuresDiet quality at ECE and elsewhere was evaluated using the Healthy Eating Index 2015.Statistical analyses performedMixed-effects models were used to determine differences in mean Healthy Eating Index 2015 component and total scores. Models were adjusted for children’s age and sex and accounted for clustering within ECE centers and families.ResultsChildren consumed approximately 40% of daily energy, nutrients, and food groups at ECE centers. The mean total Healthy Eating Index 2015 score was higher for foods and beverages consumed at ECE centers (58.3±0.6) than elsewhere (52.5±0.6) (P<0.0001). The mean total Healthy Eating Index 2015 score was also higher on weekdays (58.5±0.5) than on weekends (51.3±0.5) (P<0.0001).ConclusionsChildren consume a majority of dietary intake away from ECE centers. Overall, diet quality is low, but the quality of foods consumed by children at ECE centers is higher than that consumed elsewhere. ECE centers remain an important source of nutrition and further investigation is warranted to identify ways to support both ECE centers and families to provide healthier eating environments. 相似文献

BackgroundThe Together on Diabetes (TOD) intervention was a home-visiting diabetes prevention and management program for Native youth.Objectives(1) Examine the impact of the TOD program on diet quality using the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI-2010); (2) determine association between diet quality and cardiometabolic health.DesignThe TOD program was conducted from October 2012 to June 2014 and was evaluated using a pretest-posttest study design from baseline to 12 months. Dietary intake was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire.Participants/settingThere were 240 participants between 10 and 19 years of age from 4 reservation-based, rural tribal communities in the southwestern United States that had been diagnosed with T2DM or prediabetes or were identified as at risk based on body mass index and a qualifying laboratory test.InterventionYouth were taught a 12-lesson curriculum on goal setting, nutrition, and life skills education.Main outcome measuresBehavioral and physiologic outcomes related to diabetes.Statistical analysisChanges in AHEI-2010 score and associations with cardiometabolic measures were tested, over time, using adjusted longitudinal linear mixed-effects models.ResultsThe study sample reported an average energy intake of 2016 kcal/d (±1260) and AHEI-2010 score of 47.4 (±7.4) (range: 0-110, higher = better diet quality), indicating low diet quality at baseline. At 12 months’ follow-up, there was a reduction in kilocalories (mean = −346 kcal/d; P < .001), sugar-sweetened beverages (mean = −2 fluid oz/d; P = .032), red/processed meat (mean = −1.5 oz/d; P = .008), and sodium (mean = −650 mg/d; P < .001) but no change in AHEI-2010 score (P = .600). The change in systolic blood pressure from baseline to 12 months for participants within the highest AHEI-2010 quartile group was significantly larger than the change in participants within the lowest quartile group (mean = −5.90 mm Hg; P = .036).ConclusionsDespite stable AHEI-2010 scores during follow-up, there were improvements in diet quality domains likely to be associated with cardiometabolic health. Home-visiting programs like TOD are promising interventions for decreasing dietary intake of poor-quality foods. 相似文献

Heterosexual transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections has become a primary health concern worldwide. Gender roles for heterosexual interactions appear to sanction men’s sexual risk-taking, especially the pursuit of multiple sexual partners. Using measures developed in this study, the current study assessed the associations between men’s and women’s relationship attitudes and experiences and their sexual risk encounters. Participants were 104 men and 103 women (18–24 years) from a large, urban college located in a high HIV risk neighborhood of New York City. All completed a survey assessing HIV risk and the battery of relationship measures assessing traditional sexual roles, sexual conflicts, significance of sex, relationship investment, need for relationship, and unwanted sex. For men, greater sexual conflict in their primary relationships was associated with more sexual partners and fewer unprotected vaginal intercourse encounters with a primary partner and across sex partners overall. In addition, men’s endorsement of more traditional sexual roles and lower relationship investment were associated with higher numbers of sexual partners. Among women, compliance with men to engage in unwanted sex was associated with higher levels of participation in unprotected sex. For both men and women, greater significance given to sex in a relationship was associated with fewer extradyadic partners. This study demonstrates the utility of measures of relationship attitudes and experiences to characterize sexual risk, especially among men. Findings are discussed in terms of implications for prevention program targeting young urban adults.O’Sullivan is with the Department of Family & Social Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, 1300 Morris Park Avenue, Mazer 100, Bronx, NY 10461, USA; O’Sullivan, Hoffman, and Dolezal are with the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia University, New York, NY, USA; Hoffman is with the Department of Epidemiology, Joseph L. BackgroundScant research has examined whether laboratory assessments of eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) relates to long-term diet quality.ObjectiveThis study investigates the association of EAH with diet quality during pregnancy.DesignPregnancy diet quality was assessed using 24-hour diet recalls collected in each pregnancy trimester. EAH was assessed in a counterbalanced, crossover laboratory feeding substudy in which participants completed two free access eating occasions following a standardized meal during their second pregnancy trimester.Participants/settingData were collected from March 2015 to December 2016 from a subsample of participants (n = 46) enrolled at ≤12 weeks’ gestation in an observational, prospective cohort study (the Pregnancy Eating Attributes Study) in North Carolina.InterventionParticipants were presented with highly processed (HP) and minimally processed (MP) foods in two separate assessments.Main outcome measuresScores for total Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) and adherence to adequacy and moderation components were calculated from the diet recalls. Higher scores reflect better diet quality.Statistical analyses performedLinear regressions estimated associations of pregnancy diet quality with EAH (energy, EAH-kcal; and percent offered, EAH-%) in each condition for all foods, and separately for sweet and savory foods.ResultsLower pregnancy diet quality (all indicators) was associated with greater EAH (EAH-kcal and EAH-%) of all foods and sweet foods in the HP condition. Each 100-kcal increase in EAH of HP foods was associated with a 2- to 3-point decrease (standard error = 0.7 to 0.8) in HEI-2015 (P < 0.01); each 10% increase in EAH of HP foods was associated with a 5- to 7-point decrease (standard error = 2.0) in HEI-2015 (P < 0.01). Greater EAH (energy and percent offered) of savory food intake in the HP condition was associated with a lower HEI-2015 adequacy component score, but was not associated with the HEI-2015 or HEI-2015 moderation component scores. EAH in the MP condition was not associated with pregnancy diet quality.ConclusionsGreater EAH of HP, especially sweet, foods was related to worse pregnancy diet quality. Consuming HP sweets after meal termination may reflect a tendency for eating beyond satiation and may be a useful intervention target for improving maternal diet quality. 相似文献

BackgroundThere is a disproportionate burden of low diet quality among young adults compared with other adult subpopulations that is not understood. Perceived and objective diet qualities are studied to understand possible barriers to change.ObjectiveTo explore the association between perceived diet quality and objective diet quality in young adults in the United States.DesignThis cross-sectional study used data from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to calculate total Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010) score and component scores and study their relationships with perceived diet quality scores.Participants/settingThe sample consisted of 1,261 young adults, aged 18 to 30, with 24-hour recall data.Main outcome measuresPerceived and objective diet quality were evaluated.Statistical analyses performedMultiple regression analysis was used to test the ability to predict total HEI-2010 scores from perceived diet quality scores. Ordered logit was used to test whether HEI-2010 component scores predicted the odds of having higher perceived diet quality.ResultsExcellent (b=8.442, P<0.001), very good (b=9.733, P<0.001), and good (b=5.527, P<0.001) perceived diet quality were significant predictors of total HEI-2010 score, compared with the referent category of poor perceived diet quality. The full regression model predicted 17.0% of the variance in total HEI-2010 score. Whole fruit (odds ratio [OR]=1.098, P=.017), whole grains (OR=1.046, P=.023), and empty calories (OR=1.054, P<0.001) were each significantly associated with the odds of having a higher rating of perceived diet quality (fair, good, very good, excellent) instead of a poor rating of diet quality; the difference in odds was low across categories.ConclusionsThere are significant relationships between perceived and objective diet quality, but other variables play a substantial role in explaining these two types of diet quality. 相似文献

Analyzing a large international data set generated by a BBC Internet survey, I examined sex differences and sexual orientation differences in six personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, disagreeable assertiveness, masculine versus feminine occupational preferences (MF-Occ), and self-ascribed masculinity-femininity (Self-MF). Consistent with previous research, sex differences and sexual orientation differences were largest for MF-Occ and for Self-MF. In general, heterosexual-homosexual differences mirrored sex differences in personality, with gay men shifted in female-typical and lesbians in male-typical directions. Bisexual men scored intermediate between heterosexual and gay men on MF-Occ; however, they were slightly more feminine than gay men on Self-MF. Bisexual women scored intermediate between heterosexual women and lesbians on both MF-Occ and Self-MF. Sex differences and sexual orientation differences in MF-Occ, Self-MF, and other personality traits were consistent across five nations/world regions (the UK, USA, Canada, Australia/New Zealand, and Western Europe), thereby suggesting a biological component to these differences. 相似文献

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread social, psychological, and economic impacts. However, these impacts are not distributed equally: already marginalized populations, specifically racial/ethnic minority groups and sexual and gender minority populations, may be more likely to suffer the effects of COVID-19. The COVID-19 Resiliency Survey was conducted by the city of Chicago to assess the impact of COVID-19 on city residents in the wake of Chicago’s initial lockdown, with particular focus on the experiences of minority populations. Chi-square tests of independence were performed to compare COVID-19-related outcomes and impacts on heterosexual vs. sexual minority populations, cisgender vs. gender minority populations, and White vs. racial/ethnic minority subgroups. Marginalized populations experienced significant disparities in COVID-19 exposure, susceptibility, and treatment access, as well as in psychosocial effects of the pandemic. Notably, Black and Latinx populations reported significant difficulties accessing food and supplies (p = 0.002). Healthcare access disparities were also visible, with Black and Latinx respondents reporting significantly lower levels of access to a provider to see if COVID-19 testing would be appropriate (p = 0.013), medical services (p = 0.001), and use of telehealth for mental health services (p = 0.001). Sexual minority respondents reported significantly lower rates of using telehealth for mental health services (p = 0.011), and gender minority respondents reported significantly lower levels of primary care provider access (p = 0.016). There are evident COVID-19 disparities experienced in Chicago especially for Black, Latinx, sexual minority, and gender minority groups. A greater focus must be paid to health equity, including providing increased resources and supplies for affected groups, adapting to inequities in the built environment, and ensuring adequate access to healthcare services to ameliorate the burden of COVID-19 on these marginalized populations.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11524-020-00497-9. 相似文献

Purpose
Partner violence (PV) is prevalent among US adolescents, though little is known about its prevalence and correlates across gender identities and sexual orientations. Existing research has frequently placed lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB), questioning, and transgender adolescents in the same category, obscuring potential differences in risk of PV.Methods
This study (N = 9,352) uses the 2015 Healthy Kids Colorado Study, a statewide representative survey, to explore how sexual orientation and gender identity are associated with PV victimization among high-school youth, and whether there is a relationship between mental health and bullying victimization and PV.Results
Out of all youth who dated in the past year, 9.4% reported experiencing past-year PV. Compared to their cisgender heterosexual peers, cisgender LGB youth (AOR = 1.48 [1.17, 1.86]) and cisgender questioning youth (AOR = 1.68 [1.13, 2.48]) had elevated risk of experiencing PV. Transgender youth, particularly those who are both transgender and LGB (AOR = 3.25 [2.02, 5.22]) or transgender and questioning their sexual orientation (AOR = 8.57 [4.28, 17.16]), had the highest risk of PV. Depressive symptoms (AOR = 1.99 [1.67, 2.37]), suicidality (AOR = 1.83 [1.62, 2.06]), bullying victimization (AOR = 1.58 [1.31, 1.91]), and online bullying victimization (AOR = 1.98 [1.62, 2.06]) were associated with PV.Conclusions
LGB, questioning and transgender high school students are at elevated risk of PV, with the highest risk among those who are both LGB and transgender. Adolescents who report PV are also more likely to be struggling with bullying, depression, and suicidality. PV prevention and response interventions should use intersectional approaches responsive to the unique needs of LGBT youth. 相似文献18.

Collective sex venues (places where people have sex in groups or in the presence of others, such as bathhouses or sex clubs) are locations where SARS-CoV-2 transmission is likely to occur. We conducted an online survey to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic among 342 sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals who had attended collective sex venues (CSV) in New York City (NYC) in the prior year. Almost 1 in 10 (9.9%) participants reported having received a positive test for SARS-CoV-2 infection or antibodies. Although a minority (27.5%) of participants reported being comfortable attending a CSV during the COVID-19 pandemic, multivariable ordinal logistic regression found that willingness was higher among participants who had taken the survey later in the pandemic (aOR = 2.90, CI95% 1.90 to 4.43), who attended CSV at higher frequencies (aOR = 1.94, CI95% 1.26 to 2.99), who used substances at CSV (aOR = 1.98, CI95% 1.22 to 3.23), and who had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection or antibodies (aOR = 2.27, CI95% 1.17 to 4.39). In open survey answers, participants described reasons for or against attending CSV during the pandemic, as well as risk reduction strategies that would make them more comfortable attending (e.g., screening for test results, doing temperature checks, holding outdoor events, or restricting events to lower risk sexual practices). SGM individuals who attend CSV might be at increased risk for COVID-19. Public health officials should provide CSV organizers and attendees with guidelines on how to prevent or minimize transmission risk in the context of pandemics such as COVID-19. 相似文献

Background: Physical activity is associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in the general population, but the effects may
be different between sexes. In addition, the effects on resource utilization are not well elucidated. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in a rural town, and follow-up data were obtained after 1 year.
Physical activity was measured in two ways: amount and maximum intensity. The association between physical activity and the
MOS Short Form-36 (SF-36) at baseline, and hospitalization, sick days, and medications in the following year were assessed
by multiple regression models. Results: Among 4018 adult residents eligible, 3529 (62.4%) had completed the follow-up questionnaire. A greater amount of exercise
was positively correlated with all domains of the SF-36: 2.4–9.5 increase in 100-scale at baseline, but association between
maximum intensity and SF-36 was observed in only women. It was also associated with a 20–50% higher utilization of over-the-counter
drugs in the following year in both sexes, but the effects of maximum intensity on sick days had different directions for
men (relative risk, 2.0–2.4) and women (relative risk, 0.3–0.5). Conclusion: The amount of physical activity had positive effects on HRQOL for both men and women, but women had more preferable effects
of maximum intensity on HRQOL and resource utilization than men. 相似文献
