Quantified electromyography of lower-limb muscles during level walking   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The electromyography (EMG) of eleven different lower limb muscles of ten healthy subjects was quantified during normal level walking. The surface EMGs obtained were normalized, in percentage, to the activity obtained during an isometric maximum voluntary test contraction of each subject. The mean peak activities of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and medial hamstring muscles occurred at heel-strike and were between 5 and 15% of max isometric EMG. The magnitudes of tibialis anterior and triceps surae muscular activity were higher than those of the other muscles investigated. Mean peak activity in tibialis anterior was 27%, in gastrocnemius medialis 42%, in gastrocnemius lateralis 19% and in soleus 40%. The important role of the triceps surae during walking was reflected in comparatively high muscular activity at push-off.  相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of different shoe types on lower extremity muscle activity in healthy young women by using electromyography. [Subjects and Methods] Fifteen healthy young women in their 20s were included in this single-group repeated measures study. The subjects were divided into three groups: Converse sneakers, rain boots, and combat boots. The subjects walked on a treadmill at 4 km/h for 30 min, during which six muscles were examined using electromyography: the rectus femoris, vastus medialis, semimembranosus, tibialis anterior, peroneus longus, and medial head of the gastrocnemius. Between switching shoe types, a 24-h rest period was instated to prevent the fatigue effect from treadmill walking. [Results] One-way analysis of variance used to compare electromyography results among the three groups showed that the main effect of group differed significantly for the vastus medialis. Vastus medialis activity was higher in the rain boots group than the Converse sneakers group, and it was higher in the combat boots group than rain boots group. [Conclusion] Shoe type affects lower extremity muscle activity. Our findings may help individuals choose the ideal shoes for daily walking.Key words: Electromyography, Lower extremity, Shoe type  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of foot orthotics on the mean electromyographic amplitude of proximal and distal lower extremity muscle groups during the first 50% of the stance phase during treadmill running. DESIGN: Repeated measures. SETTING: Subjects were recruited from the general community. PARTICIPANTS: Twelve recreational runners who were symptomatic for lower extremity pain. Clinical and radiographic findings confirmed the presence of structural malalignment of the foot. INTERVENTION: Semirigid orthotics were fabricated for each subject, and like footwear provided. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Surface electromyogram activity from the tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and biceps femoris was collected during treadmill running at self-selected speeds for orthotic and nonorthotic conditions. Root mean square values were averaged across 10 cycles, normalized to time and expressed as a percentage of the nonorthotic condition. RESULTS: Paired t test results showed statistically significant changes (p<.05) for the biceps femoris (-11.1%) and tibialis anterior (+37.5%) muscle groups during the orthotic condition. Electromyographic activity in the medial gastrocnemius, vastus medialis, and vastus lateralis with orthotic use was not significantly different from the nonorthotic condition. CONCLUSION: Although subjects' electromyographic responses to orthotic use were highly individualized, the findings of this study may enhance our understanding of muscle activity changes associated with positive outcomes from orthotic use.  相似文献

The objective of the study described here was to compare lower extremity muscle quantity and quality between individuals with and those without knee osteoarthritis (OA). Twenty-one women with knee OA (mild, n = 8; severe, n = 13) and 23 healthy patients participated. Ultrasonography was used to measure muscle thickness (MT) and echo intensity (EI) of the rectus femoris, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, biceps femoris, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gastrocnemius, soleus and tibialis anterior. MTs of the vastus medialis and vastus intermedius were smaller, and EIs of the vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, gluteus medius and tibialis anterior were larger, in the severe OA group compared than in the healthy group. Compared with the healthy group, the mild OA group had decreased MT and enhanced EI. Changes in quality and quantity occurring with knee OA progression differed among muscles. In the vastus medialis, change was observed from an earlier stage.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to quantify the activity as recorded by electromyography during ergometer cycling in eleven different muscles of the lower extremity. Eleven healthy subjects rode in twelve different ways at different work-load, pedalling rate, saddle height and pedal foot position. Vastus medialis and lateralis, gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis and the soleus muscle were the most activated muscles. Changes in muscle activity during different calibrations were studied in eight of the eleven muscles. An increase in work-load significantly increased the mean maximum activity in all the eight muscles investigated. An increase of the pedalling rate increased the activity in the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, vastus medialis, medial hamstring, gastrocnemius medialis and soleus muscles. An increase of the saddle height increased the muscle activity in the gluteus medius, medial hamstring and gastrocnemius medialis muscles. Use of a posterior pedal foot position increased the activity in the gluteus medius and rectus femoris muscles, and decreased the activity in the soleus muscle.  相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in onset timing between the vastus medialis and lateralis among the different knee alignments, as well as the best isokinetic angular velocity for an isokinetic concentric contraction. [Subjects] Fifty-two adults (20 with genu varum, 12 genu valgum, and 20 controls) were enrolled in this study. Subjects with > 4 cm between the medial epicondyles of the knee were placed in the genu varum group, whereas subjects with > 4 cm between the medial malleolus of the ankle were placed in the genu valgum group. [Methods] Surface electromyography was used to measure the onset times of the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis during concentric contractions at 30, 60, and 90°/sec. [Results] The vastus lateralis showed more delayed firing than the vastus medialis in the genu varum group, whereas vastus medialis firing was delayed more than that of the vastus lateralis in the genu valgum group. No differences in onset timing were observed between the vastus medialis and lateralis according the different angular velocities during concentric contractions in all three groups. [Conclusion] Genu varum and valgum affect quadriceps firing. Therefore, selective rehabilitation training of the quadriceps femoris should be considered to prevent pain or knee malalignment deformities.Key words: Quadriceps muscle, Genu varum, Genu valgum  相似文献

[Purpose] This study attempted to identify how genu varum or valgum affects the electromyographic activities of the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and rectus femoris during knee isometric contraction. [Subjects] Fifty-two healthy young adults were enrolled in this study. They were enrolled and classified into three groups by knee alignment conditions: the genu varum, genu valgum, and control groups. [Methods] The electromyographic activity ratio of the vastus medialis to the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris were calculated using the percentage of maximum voluntary contraction. The participants contracted their quadriceps during isometric contraction at 30 and 60° of knee flexion. [Results] The genu varum group had more activity in the vastus medialis than in the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris, whereas the genu valgum group had more activity in the vastus lateralis and rectus femoris than in the vastus medialis. There was a significant difference in the muscle activity ratio between the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis by angle of knee flexion degree only in the genu valgum. There were no significant differences in any of the three groups in terms of the muscle activity ratio of the vastus medialis to the rectus femoris by angle of knee flexion. [Conclusion] The quadriceps femoris was used for different strategies according to knee alignment during isometric contraction at 30 and 60°. This study suggests that rehabilitation training programs used to strengthen the quadriceps should consider the knee alignment conditions of the target subjects.Key words: Electromyography, Quadriceps muscle, Isometric contraction  相似文献

Quantified EMG and calculated mechanical muscular power output data were combined to provide further analysis of muscular function during ergometer cycling. The single-joint muscles; gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis and soleus all showed a more predictable function with approximately linear relationship between calculated power output and recorded EMG. The function for the two-joint muscles was found to be more complex. Biceps femoris seemed to act mainly as a hip extensor and medial hamstring mainly as a knee flexor. Gastrocnemius medialis was proposed to act more as a plantar flexor and gastrocnemius lateralis as a knee flexor.  相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the vastus medialis oblique to vastus lateralis ratio in two pelvic tilt positions while performing the sit-to-stand task. [Subjects and Methods] Activation of the vastus medialis oblique and the vastus lateralis muscles of 46 healthy subjects (25 males, 21 females) were recorded by surface electromyography during the STS task with anterior pelvic tilt (sit with thoracolumbar spine extended and pelvis in an anterior tilt) and neutral pelvic tilt (sit with thoracolumbar spine relaxed and pelvis in the neutral tilt position) positions. Changes in vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis activation and the vastus medialis oblique/vastus lateralis ratio were analyzed. [Results] Vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis muscle activation significantly increased in neutral pelvic tilt position, but the vastus medialis oblique/vastus lateralis ratio was not statistically different. [Conclusion] The sit-to-stand procedure with neutral pelvic tilt position increased activation of the vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis, usefully strengthening the quadriceps, but did not selectively activate the vastus medialis oblique muscle.Key words: Anterior pelvic tilt, Neutral pelvic tilt, Sit-to-stand task  相似文献

[Purpose] This study aims to investigate how squat exercises on a decline board and how the knee joint angles affect the muscle activity of the lower limbs. [Subjects] The subjects were 26 normal adults. [Methods] A Tumble Forms wedge device was used as the decline board, and the knee joint angles were measured with a goniometer. To examine the muscle activity of the biceps femoris, rectus femoris, gastrocnemius lateralis, and tibialis anterior of the lower limbs, a comparison analysis with electromyography was conducted. [Results] The muscle activity of the biceps femoris, rectus femoris, gastrocnemius lateralis, and tibialis anterior increased with increased knee joint angles, both for squat exercises on the decline board and on a flat floor. When the knee joint angle was 45°, 60°, and 90°, the muscle activity of the rectus femoris was significantly higher and that of the tibialis anterior was significantly lower during squat exercises on the decline board than on the flat floor. When the knee joint angle was 90°, the muscle activity of the gastrocnemius lateralis was significantly lower. [Conclusion] Squat exercises on a decline board are an effective intervention to increase the muscle activity of the rectus femoris with increased knee joint angles.Key words: Decline board, Squat exercise, Range of motion  相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in muscle activation of the trunk and lower extremities and plantar foot pressure due to backpack loads of 0, 10, 15, and 20% of body weight during level walking in individuals with flatfoot. [Methods] Fourteen young flatfoot subjects and 12 normal foot subjects participated in this study. In each session, the subjects were assigned to carry a backpack load, and there were four level walking modes: (1) unloaded walking (0%), (2) 10% body weight (BW) load, (3) 15% BW load, and (4) 20% BW load. Trunk and lower extremity muscle activities were recorded by surface EMG, and contact area and plantar foot pressure were determined using a RS scan system. [Results] The erector spinae, vastus medialis, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscle activities, but not the rectus femoris and rectus abdominis muscle activities of flatfoot subjects significantly and progressively increased as load increased in flatfoot subjects. Contact area and pressure of the lateral and medial heel zones were significantly increased too. [Conclusion] Based on this data, the weight of a backpack could influence muscle activation and plantar foot pressure in flatfoot.Key words: Flatfoot, Backpack, Plantar pressure  相似文献

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to determine the activities of the muscles around the ankle joint during foot gripping. [Subjects] The subjects of this study were 17 healthy females. [Methods] We measured the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) activities of the soleus muscle, the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle, and the tibialis anterior muscle, and calculated %IEMG during foot gripping in 3 different ankle joint positions: 10° of plantar flexion, 0°, and 10° of dorsiflexion. [Results] The maximal force of foot gripping achived by the crural muscles in any ankle position was 30–50% IMEG of the MVC. Repeated analysis of variance showed that the %IEMG was significantly lower in 10°of dorsiflexion than in the other 2 positions for all muscles. BACKGROUND: Many receptors located within the intra-articular knee structures contribute to the neuromuscular responses of the knee. The purpose was to compare the automatic postural response induced by a perturbation at the foot before and after an intra-articular injection of a local anesthetic (bupivicaine), after a saline (sham) injection, and after no intra-articular injection (control) in the knee. METHODS: Muscle onset latencies and automatic response magnitudes for the vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, medial hamstrings, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius were measured using electromyography (EMG) when anteriorly directed perturbations were applied to the feet of 30 subjects. All subjects then received a lidocaine skin injection followed by: an intra-articular bupivicaine injection (treatment group); an intra-articular saline injection (sham group); or no injection (control group), depending on their randomized group assignment. The perturbation tests were then repeated. FINDINGS: Muscle onset latencies and automatic response magnitudes did not change as a result of the intra-articular injections. Latencies were significantly greater for the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis when compared to the medial hamstrings, biceps femoris and tibialis anterior (P<0.001). Automatic response magnitudes for the tibialis anterior were significantly greater than those of the hamstrings, which were greater than those of the quadriceps (P<0.001). INTERPRETATION: There were no differences in muscle response when anteriorly directed perturbations were applied to the foot with or without an injection of local anesthetic in the knee. Intra-articular receptors were either unaffected by the anesthetic or the extra-articular receptors or receptors of the other joints were able to compensate for their loss.  相似文献

[Purpose] This study investigated the effects of the slow speed-targeting squat exercise on the vastus medialis oblique/vastus lateralis ratio. [Subjects] Ten asymptomatic men were recruited. [Methods] The EMG activities of the vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis muscles were recorded using surface electrodes. The subject performed the squat exercise under 3 different conditions. [Results] The vastus medialis oblique/vastus lateralis ratio in condition 2 (1.5 ± 0.7) was significantly higher than that in conditions 1 and 3 (1.0 ± 0.5, 1.1 ± 0.8, respectively) [Conclusion] Therefore, an effectively slow movement speed is recommended for selective strengthening of vastus medialis oblique using a slow speed-targeting device that provides biofeedback.Key words: Slow movement speed, Squat exercise, VMO  相似文献

Purpose/Background:

Distance running offers a method to improve fitness but also has a risk of lower limb overuse injuries. Foot strike technique has been suggested as a method to alter loading of the lower limb and possibly minimize injury risk. However, there is a dearth of information regarding neuromuscular response to variations in running techniques. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the EMG activity that occurs during FFS running and RFS running, focusing on the biceps femoris, semitendenosis, rectus femoris, vastus medialis oblique, tibialis anterior (TA), medial head of gastrocnemeus (MGas), lateral head of gastrocnemius (LGas), and soleus.

Methods:

healthy adults (6 male, 8 female; age, 24.2 ± 0.8 years, height 170.1 ± 7.8 cm; mass 69.8 ±10.9 kg; Body Mass Index 24.1 ± 3.0 kg·m2) participated in the study. All participants performed a RFS and FFS running trial at 8.85 kph. A 3D motion capture system was used to collect kinematic data and electromyography was used to define muscle activity. Two‐tailed paired t‐tests were used to examine differences in outcomes between RFS and FFS conditions.

Results:

The ankle was significantly more plantarflexed during FFS running (p = .0001) but there were no significant differences in knee and hip angles (p = .618 & .200, respectively). There was significantly less activity in tibialis anterior (TA) (p < .0001) and greater activity in the MGas (p= .020) during FFS running. The LGas and soleus did not change activity (p = .437 & .490, respectively).

Conclusions:

FFS running demonstrated lower muscular activity in the TA and increased activation in the MGas.

Clinical Relevance:

FFS and RFS running have the potential to off‐load injury prone tissues by changing between techniques. However, future studies will be necessary to establish more direct mechanistic connections between running technique and injury.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: We aimed at investigating the influence of diabetic neuropathy and previous history of plantar ulcers on electromyography (EMG) of the thigh and calf and on vertical ground reaction forces during gait. METHODS: This study involved 45 adults divided into three groups: a control group (n=16), diabetic neuropathic group (n=19) and diabetic neuropathic group with previous history of plantar ulceration (n=10). EMG of the right vastus lateralis, lateral gastrocnemius and tibialis anterior were studied during the stance phase. The peaks and time of peak occurrence were determined and a co-activation index between tibialis anterior and lateral gastrocnemius. In order to represent the effect of the changes in EMG, the first and second peaks and the minimum value of the vertical ground reaction force were also determined. Inter-group comparisons of the electromyographical and ground reaction forces variables were made using three MANCOVA (peaks and times of EMG and peaks of force) and one ANCOVA (co-activation index). FINDINGS: The ulcerated group presented a delayed in the time of the lateral gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis peak occurrence in comparison to control's. The lateral gastrocnemius delay may be related to the lower second vertical peak in diabetic subjects. However, the delay of the vastus lateralis did not cause any significant change on the first vertical peak. INTERPRETATIONS: The vastus lateralis and lateral gastrocnemius delay demonstrate that ulcerated diabetic neuropathic patients have a motor deficit that could compromise their ability to walk, which was partially confirmed by changes on ground reaction forces during the push-off phase.  相似文献

[Purpose] To investigate the effects of a seven-week quadriceps stretching program on the muscle fibre orientation of the vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis in the lower limbs by ultrasound imaging. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-seven healthy, physically fit, asymptomatic females and males (age 21.5 ± 1.3, Tegner activity level score ≥4) were recruited. Their initial vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis fibre angles were determined using ultrasound. They then undertook a seven-week quadriceps stretching program, 3 sets of stretches to be performed on both lower limbs, 3 times a week on 3 separate days. One volunteer was assigned as an intra-rater control and did not take part in the stretching program. The vastus lateralis and vastus medialis oblique fibre angles were measured again on completion of the exercise regime. [Results] A statistically significant decrease in muscle fibre angle was observed in both the right and left vastus medialis oblique, and the right and left vastus lateralis. [Conclusion] A 7-week stretching program can result in a significant decrease in muscle fibre angle in both the vastus medialis oblique and the vastus lateralis. This can help in understanding the effects of prescribed stretching exercises on athletic patients with PFP.  相似文献

[Purpose] To compare the changes in the muscle cross-sectional area (MCSA) along the long axis of the lower leg muscles at rest and during ankle plantar flexors isometric contraction and to obtain basic information regarding the movement of lower leg muscles during ankle plantar flexors contraction. [Participants and Methods] Sixteen healthy young female participants (20.9 ± 1.2 years) were asked to sit with their ankles in a neutral ankle position. Images were obtained at rest and during isometric contraction of the ankle plantar flexors using gravity magnetic resonance imaging. The MCSAs of the triceps surae and tibialis anterior were measured. [Results] The middle region of the soleus muscle had a lower MCSA on contraction than at rest. In addition, the medial head of the gastrocnemius had a lower MCSA on contraction than at rest in the distal quarter. Moreover, the tibialis anterior had a lower MCSA at rest than on contraction in the middle region. [Conclusion] The area to be used as an indicator and the movement to be induced differ depending on the muscle during isometric contraction of the triceps surae.Key words: Muscular dynamics, MRI, Lower leg muscle  相似文献
