BACKGROUND/AIMS: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is occasionally associated with multiple areas in the surrounding mucosa unstained with iodine. METHODOLOGY: We examined 21 male patients with superficial esophageal carcinoma. Group 1 consisted of 4 cases of superficial esophageal carcinoma associated with multiple lesions that did not stain with iodine. Group 2 comprised 17 cases of a solitary tumor without major additional lesions in the mucosa. We assessed the correlation between clinicopathological factors, a history of tobacco and alcohol consumption, and p53 expression in the two groups. RESULTS: We found four cases (group 1) of superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma where there were a total of 10 satellite tumors in addition to the main tumor. These patients tended to have a higher daily consumption of tobacco and alcohol than those in group 2. Moreover in all these group 1 cases there was intraepithelial spread of the tumors and p53 overexpression in all of the main and additional tumors. CONCLUSIONS: We have found that higher tobacco and alcohol consumption are closely related to multiple lesions unstained by iodine and abnormal expression of the p53 gene.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to find out the significance of the immunohistochemical expression of pRb2/p130, which is a member of the retinoblastoma gene family, in squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. METHODS: We analyzed immunohistochemically the expression of pRb2/p130 of 107 squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the esophagus and the correlation of pRb2/p130 expression with clinicopathological features was investigated. RESULTS: Expression of pRb2/p130 was observed in 42 SCCs (39.3%). There was a significant correlation of pRb2/p130 expression with the histological type of well-differentiated SCC (P< 0.0001). The survival rate of patients with esophageal SCCs expressing pRb2/p130 was significantly better than that of patients with tumors without pRb2/p130 expression (P= 0.016). A multivariate analysis demonstrated that pRb2/p130 expression (P= 0.026), venous invasion (P= 0.028), and TNM stage (P= 0.044) were independent prognostic indicators in patients with esophageal SCCs. CONCLUSIONS: Differentiation of esophageal SCC might be partially mediated by the pRb2/p130 gene, and pRb2/p130 expression can additionally be an indicator of the better prognosis of patients with esophageal SCCs.  相似文献

Chemoradiotherapy is a multimodal therapy routinely used as a primary treatment for advanced esophageal cancer. However, it is beneficial only to patients who respond. To identify pretreatment markers predicting response and survival, we examined the expression of cell cycle regulatory molecules, p53, p21(Waf1/Cip1) cyclin D1, and CDC25B, in biopsy specimens from 76 patients with stage III and stage IV squamous cell carcinoma. Overexpression of p53, p21, cyclin D1 and CDC25B was observed in 58%, 30%, 28%, and 32% of patients, respectively. The expression of p21 correlated significantly with response to chemoradiotherapy (P = 0.0001). Survival of patients with p21-expressing tumors was better than that of patients with p21-negative tumors (P = 0.013). Expression of other genes was not significantly correlated with treatment response and survival. In patients with p53-negative tumors, survival of those patients with p21-positive tumors was significantly higher than that of those with p21-negative tumors (P = 0.0452), but no significant difference was found in patients with p53-positive tumors. Multivariate analysis revealed that p21 expression was an independent variable among pretreatment parameters in predicting survival. These results suggest that p21 expression is potentially useful for predicting the response to chemoradiotherapy and survival of patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell cancer.  相似文献

p53 in epidermoid cancer of the esophagus.   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Wild type p53 protein has an inhibitory effect on cell proliferation and transformation. Mutation or deletion of the p53 gene can be the first point of malignancy. Abnormalities of the p53 protein gene have been linked with tumors of the esophagus. METHODOLOGY: In this study, we investigated the expression of the p53 gene in epidermoid carcinoma of the esophagus as well as in the basal layer near the tumor. We studied the expression of p53 in 24 esophageal tumors and in normal esophageal tissue near the tumor in 16 cases, using an immunohistochemical reaction. RESULTS: p53 was positive in 18 esophageal tumors (75%) and in 15 of the 16 (94%) normal samples of esophageal tissue. There was no correlation between expression of the p53 gene and age, sex, tobacco intake, alcoholism, and familiar history of cancer or clinical stage of the disease. The mean survival of the p53 patients (negative or positive) was similar. CONCLUSIONS: p53 accumulation was found in most cases of esophageal cancer as well as in samples of normal tissue close to the tumor. The positivity of p53 seems to be independent of clinical or pathological parameters and was not of any use in predicting prognosis in our study.  相似文献

Frequent mutation of the p53 gene in human esophageal cancer.   总被引:28,自引:7,他引:28       下载免费PDF全文
Sequence alterations in the p53 gene have been detected in human tumors of the brain, breast, lung, and colon, and it has been proposed that p53 mutations spanning a major portion of the coding region inactivate the tumor suppressor function of this gene. To our knowledge, neither transforming mutations in oncogenes nor mutations in tumor suppressor genes have been reported in human esophageal tumors. We examined four human esophageal carcinoma cell lines and 14 human esophageal squamous cell carcinomas by polymerase chain reaction amplification and direct sequencing for the presence of p53 mutations in exons 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Two cell lines and five of the tumor specimens contained a mutated allele (one frameshift and six missense mutations). All missense mutations detected occurred at G.C base pairs in codons at or adjacent to mutations previously reported in other cancers. The identification of aberrant p53 gene alleles in one-third of the tumors we tested suggests that mutations at this locus are common genetic events in the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus.  相似文献

Background and Aim: Abnormal expression of Fragile Histidine Triad (Fhit), E‐cadherin and p53 is observed in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. It has recently been reported that aberrant expression of activation‐induced cytidine deaminase (AID) in gastric epithelium leads to the accumulation of nucleotide alterations in the p53 gene. However, little is known about the association between these molecular events and the clinicopathological characteristics of early stage esophageal squamous neoplasia, especially in endoscopically resected tumors. Methods: Esophageal squamous neoplasias (n = 49) comprising nine cases of low‐grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN), 22 of high‐grade intraepithelial neoplasia/carcinoma in situ (HGIN/CIS) and 18 of invasive cancers, were endoscopically resected. Their expression of the tumor‐related proteins: Fhit, E‐cadherin, p53 and AID was assessed using immunohistochemical methods, and the relationship between protein expression and clinicopathological data was examined. Results: Reduced or absent Fhit and E‐cadherin expression was detected in 22% and 0% of LGIN cases, 73% and 14% of HGIN/CIS cases, and 94% and 61% of invasive cancer cases, respectively, showing progressive increases during neoplastic progression (Fhit: P < 0.01, E‐cadherin: P < 0.01). Although p53 and AID were overexpressed in these samples, no change in their expression occurred during neoplastic progression. Moreover, p53 expression was not significantly associated with AID expression. Conclusions: These results indicate that a decrease in Fhit and E‐cadherin expression could be related to the development and progression of esophageal squamous neoplasia, and that the expression of p53 was independent of aberrant AID expression in the early stage of esophageal carcinogenesis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Carcinogenesis is characterized by the abnormal regulation of cell cycle. The abnormal expression of the regulators of cell cycle may be related to the prognosis. Since the clinical significance of the expression of the three proteins in colorectal carcinomas is still controversial, we evaluated the prognostic value of the expression of cyclin E, p27 and mutant p53 in stage II colorectal cancer. METHODS: The expression levels of cyclin E, p27 and mutant p53 proteins in 41 patients with stage II colorectal carcinomas were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: In the univariate analysis, the level of CEA at diagnosis was associated with disease relapse. In the multivariate analysis, the clinicopathological variables such as age, gender, site of primary tumor, tumor size, state of tumor differentiation and preoperative plasma CEA level were not associated with disease relapse. When Kaplan-Meier survival curves were constructed to determine the prognosis, cyclin E, p27 and mutant p53 expressions did not predict poor prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that the expression of cyclin E, p27 and mutant p53 proteins did not predict the clinical outcome in the stage II colorectal carcinomas.  相似文献

Recently, various cell cycle regulators have been investigated as biological markers of malignant potential. These regulators might influence the survival rate and the effect of adjuvant therapies. In this study, we analyzed p53, p21(Waf1/Cip1) and cyclin D1 expression in 64 esophageal cancer patients and the relationship between clinicopathologic parameters and patient survival. The positive expression rate was 48.4%, 42.2% and 43.8% in the p53, p21 and cyclin D1 groups respectively. Multivariant analysis revealed that tumor depth, chemotherapy, p53, p21 and cyclin D1 expression showed significant values. p53- and cyclin D1-negative patients had a worse prognosis. p21-positive patients had a better prognosis. In stage 0, I and II patients, there was a significant difference between p53-positive and -negative, p21-positive and -negative, and cyclin D1-positive and -negative groups. In stage III and IV patients, there was no significant difference between any two groups. However, a significant difference was seen in the p21 group: among patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy, the p21-positive group had a 5-year survival rate of 50% compared with 13.4% in the p21-negative group (not significant).  相似文献

Telomerase activity in small cell esophageal carcinoma   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Small cell carcinoma of the esophagus is a rare and aggressive malignant tumor. Telomerase activation is common in human cancers. There is a lack of data on telomerase activity in esophageal small cell cancers. The present report studied the role of telomerase activity in esophageal small cell carcinoma. The clinicopathologic data of five patients with small cell carcinoma of the esophagus who underwent primary surgical treatment between 1991 and 2000 were studied. Telomeric repeat amplification protocol assays were used to investigate telomerase activity in these tumors. The proliferative activity (MIB-1) and p53 expression of these tumors were also studied using immunohistochemistry and correlated with the telomerase activity. All five small cell carcinomas showed detectable telomerase activity in the primary tumor. Two out of the five morphologically normal esophageal mucosae adjacent to the primary tumor had detectable telomerase activity. There was no correlation between the p53 expression, tumor stage, survival of patients, and the presence of telomerase activity. High MIB-1 expression in esophageal small cell carcinomas was associated with high telomerase activity. Telomerase activation is common in small cell carcinoma of the esophagus. This fact may find application in anti-telomerase treatment for this aggressive tumor.  相似文献

We examined p53, p21WAF-1, and Bcl-2 protein expression in malignant and nonmalignant bronchial specimens obtained during bronchoscopy from 60 lung cancer patients. Twenty-six (43.3%), 36 (60%), and 20 (33.3%) of the tumors were p53, p21WAF-1, and Bcl-2 positive, respectively. High-level p53 and Bcl-2 expression characterized advanced preneoplastic lesions, while hyperplasias, squamous metaplasias, and mild dysplasias exhibited low levels of expression. There was no difference between early and advanced preneoplastic lesions in the level of p21WAF-1, expression. A history of heavy smoking was associated with p21WAF-1, expression in preneoplastic lesions (p = 0.022) and tumors (p = 0.032). p53(-)/p21WAF-1(++)/bcl-2(-) was the only significant independent predictor of lower clinical stage (OR: 0.88, p = 0.038). In univariate analysis, survival of NSCLC patients was affected by disease stage (p <0.001) and tumor histology (p = 0.018). While single-protein expression was not associated with prognosis, the combined immunophenotype p53(-)/p21WAF-1(++)/bcl-2(-) predicted longer survival (p = 0.03). In multivariate analysis, only the TNM stage was found to be a prognostic factor for NSCLC. We conclude that p53 and Bcl-2 alterations may happen early in bronchial carcinogenesis and that absence of these alterations in combination with p21WAF-1, overexpression may be associated with a less aggressive tumor behavior.  相似文献

factors, such as cigarette smoking,in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)in northeastern Iran,a region with a high incidence of ESCC.METHODS:The expression of p53 and p21 proteins was investigated immunohistochemically in tumor tissue from 80 ESCC patients and in 60 available paraffinembedded blocks of adjacent normal specimens from the cases, along with normal esophageal tissue from 80 healthy subjects.RESULTS:Positive expression of p53 protein was detected in 56.2%(45/80)of ESCC cases, and in none of the normal esophageal tissue of the control group(P<0.001).Furthermore,73.8%(59/80)of ESCC cases and 43.8%(35/80)of controls had positive expression of p21 protein(P<0.001).Cigarette smoking was significantly associated with p53 over-expression in ESCC cases(P=0.010,OR=3.64;95%CI:1.32-10.02).p21 over-expression was associated with poorer clinical outcome among the ESCC patients(P=0.009).CONCLUSION:Over-expression of p53 in association with cigarette smoking may play a critical role in ESCC carcinogenesis among this high-risk population of northeastern Iran.Furthermore,p21 over-expression was found to be associated with poor prognosis, specifically in the operable ESCC patients.  相似文献

The prognostic effect of p21WAF1 expression on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients is controversial. Further clarifying the effect of this protein is beneficial for optimizing the patient outcomes. In the current study, we investigated the expression of p21WAF1 protein in 189 specimens of stage III ESCC by immunohistochemistry. As shown by the Kaplan–Meier curve, the overall survival rate of the positive‐expression group was significantly higher than that of the negative‐expression group (P < 0.05). No significant correlation was observed between p21WAF1 expression and clinicopathological parameters in terms of gender, age, tumor location, tumor grade, pathological stage, and number of regional lymph node metastases (P > 0.05). We concluded that p21WAF1 played an intricate role in the tumorigenesis and development of ESCC. p21WAF1 could serve as a positive prognostic predictor for stage III ESCC patients.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Studying p53 protein expression in tumor cells is one of the effective methods for detecting p53 gene mutations. This study attempted simultaneous monitoring of p53 overexpression in colon cancer using immunohistochemical and immunoblotting techniques and also to compare abnormalities of p53 with DNA ploidy and clinicopathological variables. METHODOLOGY: The occurrence of p53 protein expression was analyzed in forty-nine fresh colorectal cancer specimens by immunohistochemical and p53 protein expression also demonstrated by Western immunoblotting technique in 28 colorectal cancer specimens, using an anti-human p53 monoclonal antibody (Do-7), and 25 normal colon mucosa as a negative control. DNA ploidy in 36 specimens of colon cancer tissues was determined by Flow cytometry. RESULTS: Overexpression of p53 protein was detected immunohistochemically in 53.1% (26 of 49) of the tumor specimens. DNA ploidy was performed in 36 cases, 55.6% (20 of 36) of colon cancer specimens were DNA aneuploidy, p53 immunostaining was positive in 60% of cases with DNA aneuploidy compared to 31.3% in diploid tumors (p<0.001). There was no significant association between p53 immunostaining and clinicopathological variables. Overexpression of p53 protein was demonstrated in nuclear protein extract by immunoblotting in 75% (21 of 28) of colorectal carcinoma. Aneuploidy carcinomas were more frequently p53 positive by immunoblotting than DNA diploidy carcinomas; 76.5% (13 of 17) vs. 72.7% (8 of 11) (p<0.2). P53 expression by immunoblotting was more frequently found in good lymphocytic infiltration than moderate and poor lymphocytic infiltration (p<0.001). Also, p53 expression in right colon was significant with rectum (p<0.009). The incidence of p53 expression in Duke's stage B was significant if compared with Duke's stage C (p<0.005). Immuno-reactivity of p53 expression was detected by immunostaining and immunoblotting in 89.3% (25 of 28) of colorectal cancer. P53 immunoreactivity by immunostaining and immunoblotting were closely related to the clinicopathological variables such as pathological type (p<0.01), lymphocytic infiltration (p<0.0001), tumor grade, and tumor site (p<0.001). DNA aneuploidy was more frequently p53 positive than DNA diploid tumor by immunostaining and immunoblotting (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Immunohistochemistry confirmed by immunoblotting assay is a sensitive method for detecting the trace amount of p53 protein and provides valuable information for the understanding of colorectal cancer biology.  相似文献

p62 Expression in primary carcinomas of the digestive system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
AIM: To characterize p62 expression and define the relationship between p62 expression and cell proliferation in primary carcinomas of the digestive system. METHODS: p62 expression was characterized in surgically resected tumor specimens from 60 patients with primary carcinomas of the digestive tract (including 22 esophageal carcinomas, 17 gastric carcinomas, and 21 colorectal carcinomas) and 40 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The cell proliferation was determined by IHC of Ki-67 in 40 patients with HCC. RESULTS: Twenty-two cases of esophageal carcinoma were histopathologically diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma. We combined the gastric and colorectal carcinomas based on the equivalent histology. The 38 tumors in the combined groups, consisted of 17 well-differentiated, eight moderately differentiated, nine poorly differentiated carcinomas, and four mucinous adenocarcinomas. According to the criteria of Edmondson and Steiner, 40 patients with HCC were graded (2 grade Ⅰ,17 grade Ⅱ and 21 grade Ⅲ). p62 expression in primary carcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract (60/60,100%) was higher than that (27/40, 67.5%) of HCC (P<0.01, %2 = 19.63). High expression levels of p62 were positively correlated with histological grades in gastric and colorectal carcinomas (P<0.0001) and inversely associated with those in HCC (P = 0.0322). No significant correlations were observed for esophageal carcinomas (P = 0.8246). p62 expression was also detected in the cytoplasm of morphologically normal columnar epithelial cells adjacent to the cancer foci of gastric and colorectal carcinomas. In 40 HCC specimens, the mean Ki-67 labeling index (LI) was (19.6±16.0)%. It was (28.3±18.73)% in 12 cases with high p62 expression (+++), (7.53±14.83)% in 13 cases without p62 expression(-). Patients with a high p62 expression showed a significantly higher level of Ki-67 staining than those without p62 expression (P<0.05, t = 2,069). CONCLUSION: p62 expression is common in carcinomas of the digestive system and higher in carcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract than in primary HCC. p62 is a cellular differentiation-related protein. Cancer cells with a high p62 expression exhibited highgrowth fractions in HCC.  相似文献

The p53 gene has been shown to be commonlymutated in various human cancers, and mutant p53 can actas a dominant oncogene. The intact p53 protein is alsoknown to induce the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21WAF1/CIP1 and is implicated incell cycle arrest. We investigated p53 gene alterationsin gastric adenocarcinoma and esophageal squamous cellcarcinoma to elucidate the association of the nuclearaccumulation of the p53 protein and/orp21WAF1/CIP1 protein. Abnormalities of thetumor suppressor gene p53 protein and the expression ofp21WAF1/CIP1 protein were analyzed byimmunohistochemical techniques in 32 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma and 15 cases ofesophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Twenty cases ofgastric cancer and five cases of esophageal cancer werealso analyzed for p53 gene mutation by polymerase chain reaction and direct nucleotide sequencing.Overexpression of p53 protein was found in 13/32 (41%)of gastric cancers and 5/15 (33%) of esophageal cancers. We found immunodetectable p53 in 10/14 cases with mutations and in none of 11 cases withoutmutations in gastric and esophageal cancers. Hence, immunohistochemical and genetic analyses gave concordantresults in 84% of 25 cases, revealing a good correlation between immunostaining of p53 and missensemutation of the p53 gene. p53 immunostaining was notobserved in cases with frameshift or splicing mutation. The expression of p21WAF1/CIP1 protein wasfound in 9/32 (29%) of gastric cancers and 4/15 (27%) ofesophageal cancers and in 2/14 (14%) cases withalteration of the p53 gene and in 5/11 (45%) without. These results suggest that abnormalities of p53 may be closely associated with the pathogenesisof gastric adenocarcinoma and esophageal squamous cellcarcinoma and that the immunoreactivity of p53 proteinis a general indicator of the tumors with altered p53 function. The expression ofp21WAF1/CIP1 protein was suppressed in theneoplastic tissues with and without p53 genealteration.  相似文献

SUMMARY.  The purpose of this study was to analyze loss of p16 expression and its relationship to hypermethylation, clinicopathological parameters and prognosis in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Tissue samples from 60 ESCC were subjected to histological analysis. Immunohistochemical staining for p16 expression was performed. DNA was extracted from these primary esophageal tumors and from sera from another 38 ESCC patients. The DNA was modified with bisulfite and analyzed for p16 promoter methylation by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction. Twelve out of the 60 tumors (20%) were methylated at the p16 promoter and 48 tumors (80%) were unmethylated. There were no significant correlations between the methylation of the p16 promoter and clinicopathological parameters. Immunohistochemical staining revealed that 41 of the 60 tumors (68.3%) were p16-negative and 19 tumors (31.7%) were p16-positive. The correlation between negative p16 immunohistochemical staining and methylation was statistically significant ( P =  0.0084). No instances of p16 methylation and p16 positive immunostaining were found. There was a close correlation between loss of p16 expression and poorer prognosis in ESCC ( P =  0.0517 in overall survival, P  = 0.0478 in disease-free survival). The p16 gene promoter hypermethylation was detected in the serum of two of 38 (5.2%) patients with ESCC. This indicates that p16 promoter methylation suppresses p16 expression and that the loss of expression has a close relationship with poor prognosis in patients with ESCC. The present results may lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies, such as p16 INK4A gene therapy, to treat patients with ESCC.  相似文献

The prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is primarily determined by staging. Although radiological methods have revealed lymph node metastasis preoperatively, these radiological findings cannot be correlated with pathological staging. The aim of this study was to compare the expressions of p53, vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF C) and p21 with lymph node metastasis in preoperative endoscopic biopsy and postoperative resection material. Tissue samples were taken from 40 patients who had undergone endoscopic biopsies and radical esophagectomies. The expressions of p53, VEGF C and p21 proteins in these sections were immunohistochemically examined. The expression of each antibody was characterized as a negative or positive reaction according to the pattern and intensity of semiquantitative immunostaining. The staining pattern of antibodies was divided into three groups: < 10% cancer cells were accepted to be (-), 10-50% were (+), heterogenous and > 50% were (+ +), homogenous. For each antibody, statistical correlation with conventional prognostic parameters such as localization, microscopic grade, stage, pathological lymph node metastasis and survival, were investigated. p53 expression was observed in 65.5% (19/29) of lymph node positive cases, whereas p53 was in 50% (20/40) of cases. VEGF C was in 65% (26/40) and p21 was in 15% (6/40) of cases. p53 has the specificity of 90.9% and sensitivity rate of 65.5% in detecting lymph node metastasis and positive predictive value was 95%. Expression of p53 was significantly correlated with stage and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.02 and P = 0.03, respectively). Prediction of lymph node metastasis by p53 was correlated independently and in coexpression with VEGF C (P < 0.01). There was no relation detected between p21 and other parameters. In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), p53 and VEGF C expressions were correlated with pathologically positive lymph nodes. When preoperative staging has been insufficient in esophageal carcinoma cases, immunohistochemical analysis of p53 and VEGF C staining in tissues could be an aid to clinicians regarding lymph node metastasis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: p53 plays a role in tumor angiogenesis, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a key role in tumor angiogenesis. The aim of the present study was to clarify how expression of p53 protein participates in angiogenesis, and whether the coexpression of VEGF and p53 protein has a significance for angiogenesis and the clinicopathological features in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS: Tissues samples were taken from 60 patients with esophageal SCC after surgery. The expression of VEGF and p53 protein in these SCC was examined immunohistochemically. Microvessel density (MVD) was determined by counting microvessels in tumor sections stained for Factor VIII-related antigen. Ki-67 labeling index (LI) was calculated, based on Ki-67 antigen immunostaining, as a proliferative marker. Apoptotic index (AI) was calculated, based on the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate biotin nick end labeling, to evaluate apoptosis. RESULTS: VEGF expression was observed in 58.3%, and p53 protein expression was observed in 61.7% of the 60 patients. VEGF and p53 protein were significantly coexpressed in 26 (43.4%). Histological venous invasion (p < 0.01) and distant metastasis (p < 0.05) were significantly correlated with p53 protein expression. The two parameters were more frequently observed in the SCC with VEGF/p53 coexpression than in those without the coexpression. The MVD and Ki-67 LI were significantly higher (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001), and the AI was significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the SCC with p53 protein expression than in the SCC without it. The MVD and Ki-67 LI were higher, and the AI was lower in the SCC with VEGF/p53 coexpression than in those without the coexpression. The 5-yr survival rate in patients with the coexpression was poorer than in the other patients. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that mutant p53 expression is associated with angiogenesis and distant metastasis in esophageal SCC, and that the coexpression of p53 and VEGF may play an important role in angiogenesis, and have important clinical significance.  相似文献
