After the amendments to the regulations for the licence to practice medicine, the rating of the faculty of anesthesiology has clearly increased. In the following article a concept will be described whereby these standards were implemented at the University of Hamburg. The basic principle, especially the training in the practical proficiencies, is to achieve a continuous learning process from students through to specialists for anesthesiology.

Social networks have so far only been utilized very little by physicians in practices and hospitals. The main reason is the assumption that social media channels are mostly frequented by teenagers. That this is not so and that the generation 50 plus in particular has a strong representation in social networks, has also been shown by the third extended BITKOM study from 2013. The most popular network is Facebook and 56?% of Internet users in Germany are registered there. With the assistance of a professional Facebook page it is possible to make a significant contribution to the level of awareness and image building of a medical practice or hospital and to therefore acquire new patients. Physicians can contact their patients in social networks and inform them of new developments. In addition to Facebook, Google+ and Twitter are also suitable channels for practices and hospitals. In business networks, such as Xing and LinkedIn, physicians can communicate and maintain contact with colleagues. Physician-rating Web portals also play a core role. Every second Internet user in Germany has already searched these portals for information on physicians, hospitals and treatment methods and/or posted an evaluation. This is driven by a great need for reliable and trustworthy information. Previously, patients had to rely on advice and tips from acquaintance circles but now the information can be found on the Web. Therefore, a professional entrance into social media makes sense for physicians and hospitals.

Medical professionals with additional economic qualifications are in high demand. For doctors who aim for leading positions at medical institutions the most popular additional qualification is a Master of Business Administration (MBA). The demands on executive managers in hospitals have without any doubt changed in recent years requiring them to be trained in basic economic understanding, human resource management etc. in addition to having excellent medical training. However, MBA programs differ from one academic institution to the next. Due to the lack of standardized schedules in MBA programs it cannot be ascertained whether a candidate received adequate training and can offer the skills necessary for a higher level medical profession. In this paper the author suggests that specific training in individually required skills would be more reasonable and effective rather than encouraging medical staff to pursue academic studies leading to an MBA.

Verantwortung hygienebeauftragter Ärzte für die Prävention nosokomialer Infektionen

According to German law (e.g. Infection Protection Act 2011) hospitals, facilities for outpatient surgery and preventive care, rehabilitation facilities, dialysis facilities and day care hospitals must establish in-house procedures for infection control. The consolidation of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of infections within the hospital quality management system is crucial for good hospital hygiene practice. Providing a robust and high quality infection control system is an interdisciplinary challenge. The implementation of link physicians for infection control in each hospital department is one effort to distribute knowledge and skills on good hygiene practice. Link physicians are specially trained and responsible for infection control and prevention, continuing professional education on hygiene issues and the definition of standard operating procedures (SOP) within their department. The German Medical Association established a training scheme for link physicians for infection control. Based on this curriculum a certified interdisciplinary training course was established to provide in-depth knowledge and continuous updates for link physicians in Germany. Using a blended learning approach the course is time and cost-efficient and keeps link physicians up to date over time.

Individual health insurance companies again and again refuse the remuneration of invoices submitted by attending physicians for purely private patients or for compulsory health insurance patients with additional private insurance. As a rule the refusal is based on legal precedents or sub-statutory regulations. This article aims to help attending physicians to react argumentatively to a possible rejection of private medical billing by insurance companies for inpatient attending physician services provided.     

Kurrikulum für Rotationsärzte im CHIR-Net

Introduction

CHIR-Net is a German national surgical network for clinical trials. It is supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF 01GH0605) to establish infrastructure and expertise in the conduct of clinical trials within the surgical disciplines. An important aspect of this network is a qualified advanced training for physicians deployed at the CHIR-Net as part of a job rotation.

Methods

A catalog of activities for the time of rotation within the network has been developed in cooperation with the CHIR-Net, the deployed physicians and cooperating regional clinical trials centers (ZKS/KKS).

Result

The focal points of the physicians’ rotation in the CHIR-Net are outlined in a curriculum that has been established and evaluated in the network since January 2008.

Conclusion

After the rotation time at the CHIR-Net the skilled physicians act as multipliers of specialized knowledge on clinical research. In this way the acquired expertise will be transferred into clinical practice and treatment of patients within research projects will benefit directly.
