Good physical fitness is associated with favorable serum lipids. Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) could be even more atherogenic than serum lipids. We studied the association of ox-LDL and serum lipids with physical fitness. Healthy young (mean age 25 years) men (n=846) underwent maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max) ) and muscle fitness index (MFI) tests and completed a leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) questionnaire. Age (ANCOVA1), age+waist circumference+systolic blood pressure+fasting blood glucose+smoking (ANCOVA3) were used as covariates. The groups with the lowest VO(2max) , MFI and LTPA had 23%, 16% and 8% higher concentrations of ox-LDL than the groups with the highest VO(2max) (P<0.0001), MFI (P=0.022) and LTPA (P=0.039) groups, respectively. Subjects with poor fitness (low VO(2max) or low MFI) or low LTPA had elevated levels of ox-LDL/high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides and a low level of HDL-cholesterol (ANCOVA1, in all, P<0.05). Furthermore, low VO(2max) is associated with a high level of ox-LDL/HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, and with a low level of HDL-cholesterol (ANCOVA3, in all, P<0.05). Also, subjects with low LTPA had a high ratio of ox-LDL/HDL-cholesterol (ANCOVA1, P=0.001). In conclusion, both poor fitness (both low VO(2max) and low MFI) and low LTPA are associated with a higher concentration of ox-LDL lipids and serum lipids, which may indicate a higher risk for atherosclerosis.  相似文献

Lipid metabolism of healthy pilots was investigated and verified by the PWC170 test. Pilots with a lower physical activity showed high levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, total lipids, LDL and low levels of HDL as averaged per group. The PWC170 value and the concentration of lipid fractions in blood were found to be highly correlated, the correlation being nonlinear. The nonlinear regression data suggest that greater physical activity leads to a decrease of the lipid concentration and an increase of the content of high density lipid-protein complexes.  相似文献

Exercise is assumed to have a positive effect on migraine. However, none of the few studies on this topic can prove the expected positive influence of exercise. Therefore, the aim of this pilot study was to develop a training program suitable for migraine patients and to examine its effect on migraine. 16 patients were examined. 8 migraine patients completed a 10-week aerobic running exercise program consisting of 3 workouts per week. The program was developed by sports scientists especially to increase the fitness level. Physical fitness, i.?e., physical working capacity, was assessed using a PWC 150 test. There was also a control group of 8 patients without any special physical training. Migraine patients of the exercise group showed both a reduction in the number of migraine days per month (p=0.048) and the intensity of the attacks (p=0.028). An increase in fitness level resulted in a lowered stress level. Stress strategies like "displacement activity" (r=-0.715; p=0.046), "looking for self-affirmation" (r=-0.742; p=0.035) and "feelings of aggression" (r=-0.802; p=0.017) were reduced. Increasing the level of fitness (PWC 150) is one predictor for migraine improvement (r=0.409, p=0.031). Aerobic exercise which leads to a better fitness level is an alternative therapy method for migraine.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To estimate the familial risk of being physically fit or unfit in Canada. METHODS: The sample consisted of 11,680 participants from 4144 nuclear families of the 1981 Canada Fitness Survey. Indicators of physical fitness included estimated physical working capacity at a heart rate of 150 beats x min(-1) derived from a step test (PWC150), hand grip strength, sit-ups, and trunk flexibility. Probands were defined as reference individuals who were physically fit (95th, 85th, and 75th percentiles) or physically unfit (25th, 15th, and 5th percentiles) for each fitness indicator, respectively. RESULTS: Standardized risk ratios, adjusted for age and sex (SRR), for spouses and first-degree relatives of probands exceeding the 95th percentile are 1.63 and 1.81 for PWC150, 2.38 and 3.16 for grip strength, 2.63 and 3.98 for sit-ups, and 2.59 and 3.56 for trunk flexibility, respectively, whereas the SRR for spouses and first-degree relatives of probands below the 5th percentile are 1.54 and 1.34 for PWC150, 1.83 and 1.85 for grip strength, 1.13 and 1.53 for sit-ups, and 1.42 and 1.84 for trunk flexibility, respectively. The familial risks tend to be greatest at the extremes (95th and 5th percentiles) and the risks for first-degree relatives of physically fit probands are generally greater than those for spouses for grip strength, sit-ups and trunk flexibility, whereas those for PWC150 show no clear pattern. CONCLUSION: There is significant familial risk for being physically fit or unfit in the Canadian population. The pattern of SRR suggests that the familial risk for indicators of strength and flexibility may be due, in part, to genetic factors, whereas the shared family environment is largely contributing to the familial risk for PWC150.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine relations between health behaviours and health related fitness. METHODS: Subjects were a convenience sample of 350 healthy adults (172 men, 178 women). Covariance analysis adjusted data for significant influences of age and socioeconomic status. Obesity was assessed by anthropometry and body density. Cardiovascular fitness was assessed and various metabolic measurements were made. Questionnaires on physical activity and health related behaviours were completed. RESULTS: Cigarette abstinence was associated with a small abdominal circumference (men) and a low trunk/extremity skinfold ratio (women). Obesity indices (body mass index, total skinfolds, percent fat, and abdominal circumference) were negatively associated with perceived fitness. Leisure activity and exercise frequency were also negatively linked to some obesity indices. Blood glucose, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides were favourably influenced by perceived activity, exercise frequency, and perceived fitness, but not by exercise intensity. Abstinence from coffee was associated with a low cholesterol/HDL ratio (men only). Principal component, discriminant, and multiple logistic regression analyses showed only weak clustering of habitual physical activity with other positive health behaviours. CONCLUSIONS: Although multiphasic health promotion programmes are economical, favourable interactions between individual programme elements seem likely to be quite limited.  相似文献

Physical work capacity (PWC) and pulmonary function were measured shortly after admission in 90 inpatients with anxiety and depressive disorders. PWC was dramatically reduced while pulmonary function was slightly increased compared with predicted normal values. This indicates that the low fitness levels were caused by physical inactivity, and it is a strong argument for integrating physical fitness training into psychiatric treatment programs. Values obtained by direct measurement and indirect calculations of PWC were highly correlated (R = 0.67). The mean differences between the two tests were 21% on an individual level and 5% on a group level.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The present study examined the effects of exercise on physical and psychological variables in sedentary primigravidae (PRA). METHODS: A total of nine women randomly assigned to an exercise (E) (mean age = 31.3 +/- 3.1 yr) and six subjects randomly assigned to a control (C) group (mean age = 27.8 +/- 3.1 yr) fulfilled all requirements for the study. Exercise included a variety of exercise activities performed to a target heart rate of 150-156 beats x min(-1), three times per week for 15 wk. RESULTS: Results showed no significant differences between E and C groups in physical characteristics initially. A repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant group effect (P < 0.05) and a significant group by time interaction (P = 0.001) with the E group showing a significantly longer amount of time on the PWC150 test than the C group. There was no significant group, time, or group by time interaction for lactate accumulation. This occurred, despite the fact that the E group spent 56% longer on the PWC150 test and the C group spent 30% less time on the same test at the conclusion of the study. Finally, the E group in comparison to the C group showed more favorable improvements in several items related to health and well-being on the Body Cathexis Scale. There were no significant differences between E and C groups in any pregnancy outcome measures. All babies were delivered healthy at term. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that a vigorous exercise program can lead to significant improvements in aerobic fitness at similar lactate concentrations compared to a control group and can be well tolerated by low risk sedentary PRA without any deleterious effects occurring to herself or unborn child.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The Federal Aviation Administration's Age 60 Rule, promulgated in 1959, prohibits airline pilots from working in Part 121 operations once they have reached the age of 60. The Age 60 Rule remains a most contentious and politically sensitive topic, with challenges to the Rule currently mounted in both legislative and legal arenas. METHODS: An extensive review of the medical literature was accomplished using MEDLINE. Pertinent Federal Regulations were examined. Legal proceedings and public domain documents were noted. Letters and personal communication were solicited where necessary information could not be ascertained by other means. RESULTS: The Age 60 Rule was not based on any scientific data showing that airline pilots aged 60 and older were any less safe than younger pilots, and there is evidence to indicate that the choice of age 60 was actually based on economic rather than safety considerations. Airline pilots consistently exceed general population norms for longevity, physical health, and mental abilities. Fear of an adverse pilot health event causing a crash in standard multi-crew operations is not justified. For decades, airline pilots under age 60 have been granted the means to demonstrate their fitness for flying by taking medical, cognitive, and performance evaluations that are denied to airline pilots when they reach age 60. Actual flight experience demonstrates that older pilots are as safe as younger pilots. International aviation experience indicates that abolishing the Age 60 Rule will not compromise aviation safety. CONCLUSION: There appears to be no medical, scientific, or safety justification for the Age 60 Rule. As such, perpetuation of the Age 60 Rule, where age alone is used as the single criterion of older pilot fitness, represents age discrimination in commercial aviation.  相似文献

Cardiovascular disease represents the single largest cause of premature career termination for airline pilots--an entity approximately equal to all other medical causes combined. It is obviously essential to assess risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease among airline pilots. For that reason, we obtained lipid levels for 14,448 pilot applicants examined during the period from March 1984 through December 1988. Blood lipid levels are well-documented predictors for future cardiovascular diseases. We determined total cholesterol values, high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, and the cholesterol/HDL ratio for these lipids for our applicant population. We present these data in tabular and graphic form. They suggest a cessation of any increase in blood lipid levels during the fifth decade of life. While the cause is not obvious, there are a number of factors which may play a role in this finding.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The role of physical conditioning in tolerance to +Gz remains the subject of debate, particularly in relation to the relative merits of aerobic vs. anaerobic conditioning. The purpose of this study was to document the patterns of physical conditioning in Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) fighter pilots and to relate these findings to the question of +Gz tolerance. METHODS: A questionnaire was used to determine the physical conditioning activities of RAAF F/A-18 pilots. Aerobic fitness levels (VO2max) were determined in a sample of eight pilots using a progressive cycle ergometer protocol. RESULTS: Of the 42 F/A-18 pilots who completed the questionnaire, 86% reported regular physical conditioning, mostly three times per week. Aerobic activities were the most common (83%), with running the most popular activity (55%). Anaerobic activities were reported by 26% of respondents. Most respondents reported doing more than one activity, with an average weekly training volume of 129+/-77 min. The ergometer test results revealed a mean VO2max of 50+/-6 ml O2 x kg x min(-1). CONCLUSION: The high rates of participation in regular physical activity suggest that physical fitness is perceived as important by the fighter pilot operating in the high +Gz environment. The fighter pilots in this study participated in aerobic activities at a much higher rate than anaerobic activities. The aerobic fitness levels measured suggest that the pilots have good but not exceptionally high levels of aerobic power that are unlikely to influence +Gz tolerance.  相似文献

PURPOSE: We evaluated the association between occupational physical activity and fitness in young workers, taking into account leisure-time physical activity, body size, and smoking. METHODS: The study population comprised 2188 men and 1987 women, members of the Northern Finland birth cohort 1966, who participated in the 1997-1998 follow-up survey and were employed at the time of the survey. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured by a 4-min step test and muscular fitness by tests of maximal isometric handgrip and isometric trunk extension. Information on occupational and leisure-time physical activity and smoking was obtained by questionnaire, and body height and weight were measured during medical examination. The data were analyzed by analysis of variance and Cox regression. RESULTS: Men doing heavy physical work scored better in cardiorespiratory fitness, handgrip strength, and trunk muscle endurance than men doing lighter work; the finding for cardiorespiratory fitness was similar in women. The associations were independent of leisure-time physical activity, body weight and height, and smoking. CONCLUSION: A positive association was found between heavy physical work and a high level of fitness in young workers. Due to limitations of the study setting, causality cannot be asserted, but a training effect of heavy work would not seem unreasonable. Previous studies have suggested a reversal of the positive effect of heavy work on fitness with advancing age. Therefore, regular monitoring of workers' fitness at an early phase is justified to enable assessment of workers' capacity for heavy jobs and any possible need for fitness-improving activities.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the association between the amount and the intensity of physical activity (PA) and lipid profile and fitness in pre-menopausal women. A cross-sectional study was conducted, sampling was stratified according to two age groups and two levels of PA, as assessed by the Minnesota Leisure Time PA Questionnaire. Serum lipid profile and sex hormones were measured. The study included 403 women. Total energy expenditure on PA was directly associated with HDL-cholesterol and inversely with atherogenic index. When intensity was analyzed, only moderate PA was associated with a desirable lipid profile. A decrease of 1.59 mg/dL (standard error [SE] = 0.77) and 0.07 units (SE = 0.02) in LDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index, respectively, and an increase of 1.02 mg/dL (SE = 0.34) in HDL-cholesterol were observed per each 100 MET . min/day spent in moderate PA. After adjusting for body fat mass, the association between moderate PA and LDL-cholesterol was no longer statistically significant (regression coefficient = - 1.21; SE = 0.81) whereas the association between moderate PA and atherogenic index (regression coefficient = - 0.05; SE = 0.02) and HDL-cholesterol (regression coefficient = 0.98; SE = 0.35) remained statistically significant. Only vigorous PA was associated with VO2max. VO2max increased 2.35 mL/kg (SE = 0.39) per each 100 MET . min/day spent in vigorous PA. Only moderate PA is associated with a lower LDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index, and higher HDL-cholesterol. The association between PA and LDL is dependent on body fat mass, but the association between PA and HDL is independent of it. Only vigorous intensity PA is associated with fitness.  相似文献

This study finds evidence for 24-h carry-over effects of a moderate social dose of marijuana on a piloting task. In separate sessions, nine currently active pilots smoked one cigarette containing 20 mg of delta 9 THC and one Placebo cigarette. Using an aircraft simulator, pilots flew just before smoking, and 0.25, 4, 8, 24, and 48 h after smoking. Marijuana impaired performance at 0.25, 4, 8, and 24 h after smoking. While seven of the nine pilots showed some degree of impairment at 24 h after smoking, only one reported any awareness of the drug's effects. The results support our preliminary study and suggest that very complex human/machine performance can be impaired as long as 24 h after smoking a moderate social dose of marijuana, and that the user may be unaware of the drug's influence.  相似文献

The fasting plasma lipid, lipoprotein and apolipoprotein profiles were determined in 14 healthy Nigerian male athletes and controls matched for sex and anthropometric parameters. The mean levels of total cholesterol (P < 0.05), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein (apo) AII and E were significantly lower (P < 0.01) in the athletes than in the controls. However, there were no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05) between the mean values of the plasma triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, apo AI, B, Lp(a), LpA1 and CIII:NonB respectively for the athletes and controls. A priori, the potential effect on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk was also compared using three predictor ratios - total cholesterol: HDL cholesterol (TC:HDL), LDL cholesterol: HDL cholesterol and apo B:AI. The mean of the three ratios was lower in the athletes than in the controls; however, the differences were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Based on our data, exercise appears to decrease the TC:HDL ratio in the athletes by lowering LDL-cholesterol, while the HDL-cholesterol is unaffected. We conclude that physical activity has salutary effects on the lipid, lipoprotein and apolipoprotein profiles of healthy Nigerian men.  相似文献

In brief: Coronary heart disease (CHD) causes over 500,000 deaths per year in the United States, although this rate is declining. Preventive strategies have focused on reducing modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, cigarette smoking, and serum cholesterol levels. However, physical activity can exert a preventive effect as well. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), which seems to be the most critical determinant of risk of CHD, increases with greater fitness levels. On the basis of this literature review, the author recommends that future research programs include more precise measurements of fitness as well as determination of certain parameters of lipid metabolism, such as HDL-C, apolipoproteins, and lipoprotein lipase.  相似文献

The possible contribution of endurance fitness to performance in the Gelic games, football and hurling, has been investigated. Two groups of 15 players were compared. The first consisted of members of teams reaching interprovincial finals and the second were similar members of comparable but less successful teams. The measurements taken were: height and weight, skinfold thicknesses on the triceps, biceps, subscapular and suprailiac sites, and the physical working capacity at a heart rate of 170 beats per minute (PWC 170). The more successful players were found to be taller and heavier and to have a higher PWC 170. There was no difference in estimated percentage of fat. The difference in PWC 170 of the two groups remained after correction for the difference in body weight. A group of seven of the players who participated in two or more finals was studied longitudinally. In six of these subjects PWC 170 was higher at the time of these matches than before or after. These findings are discussed and it is suggested that endurance fitness is a factor contributing to performance in football and hurling.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine relationships between cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor status in young adulthood (mean age = 22.5 yrs) and antecedent physical fitness and physical activity at ages 12 and 15 years. The data were obtained from the Young Hearts Project, a longitudinal observational study of CVD risk factors in a representative sample of young people from Northern Ireland. Physical fitness was measured by the 20-metre endurance shuttle run, and physical activity and sports participation by a self-report recall questionnaire. CVD risk factors examined included serum total cholesterol (TC) and HDL cholesterol concentrations, the TC:HDL ratio, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and body fatness (sum of four skinfolds). Linear regression analyses showed modest relationships between physical fitness in adolescence and both TC:HDL ratio and body fatness in young adulthood. No such relationships were apparent for adolescent physical activity. The promotion of physical fitness during adolescence may reduce exposure to other risk factors lasting into early adulthood.  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIM: C-reactive protein is an independent predictor of the risk of cardiovascular events and diabetes mellitus in apparently healthy men. The relationship between C-reactive protein and the features of metabolic syndrome has not been fully elucidated. To assess the cross-sectional relationship between C-reactive protein and the features of metabolic syndrome in healthy people. METHODS: We studied 161 military pilots (agee, 40 +/- 6 years) free of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and active inflammation on their regular annual medical control. Age, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, blood pressure, smoking habit, waist circumference and body mass index were evaluated. Plasma C-reactive protein was measured by the immunonephelometry (Dade Behring) method. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel. RESULTS: The mean C-reactive protein concentrations in the subjects grouped according to the presence of 0, 1, 2 and 3 or more features of the metabolic syndrome were 1.11, 1.89, 1.72 and 2.22 mg/L, respectively (p = 0.023) with a statistically, significant difference between those with 3, and without metabolic syndrome (p = 0.01). In the simple regression analyses C-reactive protein did not correlate with the total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, body mass index and blood pressure (p > 0.05). In the multiple regression analysis, waist circumference (beta = 0.411, p = 0.000), triglycerides to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (beta = 0.774, p = 0.000), smoking habit (beta = 0.236, p = 0.003) and triglycerides (beta = 0.471, p = 0.027) were independent predictors of C-reactive protein. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested a cross-sectional independent correlation between the examined cardiovascular risk factors as the predominant features of metabolic syndrome and C-reactive protein in the group of apparently healthy subjects. The lack of correlation of C-reactive protein with the total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol in our study may suggest their different role in the process of atherosclerosis and the possibility to determine C-reactive protein in order to identify high-risk subjects not identified with cholesterol screening.  相似文献

Selected cardiovascular risk factors were examined in 272 active pilots of supersonic aircraft in Poland. Hypercholesterolemia was present in 72.4% and hypertriglyceridemia in 17.1% of the pilots. Decreased levels of HDL-cholesterol and increased levels of LDL-cholesterol were found in 86.9% and 69.9% of pilots, respectively. Slightly over half (52.2%) were found to be mildly overweight while 6.6% were obese. The prevalence of smoking was 25.4%. Risk factor modification included non-pharmacological treatment of hyperlipidemia supported by lipid-lowering drugs, depending on the serum lipid level. A significant improvement in lipid profiles was obtained with this strategy, at least over 3 to 6 mo of follow up. The challenge is to develop strategies that will result in maintained improvements.  相似文献

目的:评价不同方案训练对新兵耐力及运动成绩的影响,为优化部队体能训练方案提供理论依据。方法:72名健康男性新兵随机被分为现行训练组、有氧耐力组、无氧耐力组,均进行连续8周训练。分别于训练前、训练4周末、训练8周末进行最大耗氧量(VO2max)、台阶试验及PWC150耐力指标测定和3 000 m、50 m跑考核。结果:与训练前相比,3个组别所有指标均随时间显著进行性提高。且至训练8周末有氧耐力组台阶指数、VO2max3、000 m成绩显著优于现行训练组(P值分别为0.013、0.029、0.001);无氧耐力组台阶指数、50 m跑成绩显著优于现行训练组(P分别为0.012、0.026);各组间PWC150无显著差异。结论:科学、合理、规范的耐力训练更利于提高战士耐力素质,基层部队应根据担负任务特点有针对性的加强有氧耐力和/或无氧耐力训练。  相似文献
