ObjectiveThe purpose was to investigate the effects of yoga and clinical Pilates training on walking, respiratory muscle strength, cognition, and quality of life and compare the effects of two popular exercise methods in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS).MethodsTwenty-eight pwMS (Pilates group = 16, yoga group = 12) received the program once a week for eight weeks in addition to home exercises. At baseline and the end of the training, participants underwent assessments. The outcome measures were walking speed, mobility, balance confidence, respiratory muscle strength, cognition, and quality of life.ResultsFollowing the program, there was no significant difference in mobility (p = 0.482), perceived walking quality (p = 0.325), respiratory muscle strength (maximum inspiratory pressure: p = 0.263, maximum expiratory pressure: p = 0.866), and cognition (Symbol Digit Modalities Test: p = 0.324, California Verbal Learning Test-II: p = 0.514, Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised: p = 0.279) between the two groups. Improvements were higher in balance confidence (p = 0.006), walking speed (p = 0.004), and quality of life (p = 0.019) in the clinical Pilates group compared to the yoga group.ConclusionThis study showed positive effects in walking and respiratory aspects in pwMS who received yoga and clinical Pilates training. Pilates training was superior in improving walking speed, quality of life, and balance confidence compared to yoga training.  相似文献

BackgroundYoga is among the most commonly studied complementary therapies for managing climacteric symptoms. However, it is unclear whether yoga practices in premenopause can affect the occurrence of symptoms when women reach menopause.ObjectiveTo assess climacteric symptoms and quality of life in regular yoga practitioners and to determine whether yoga practices before menopause may avoid or mitigate climacteric-related symptoms.DesignThis study of 108 women between 40 and 65 years old included 28 women who started to practice yoga in premenopause and had already practiced for at least five years, and as controls 30 physical activity practitioners (PA) who had practiced for at least five years, and 50 sedentary women.Main outcome measuresClimacteric symptoms were evaluated with the Kupperman Menopausal Index (KMI) and the Women's Health Questionnaire (WHQ). Moreover, we measured the quality of life with the WHQ.ResultsThe KMI showed that 39.3% of yoga practitioners had no menopausal symptoms, and none reported severe symptoms. The WHQ indicated a few symptoms and a good quality of life for yoga practitioners (3.56; 3.35–3.80). In addition, we found that the yoga group had significantly less moderate and severe symptoms (p = 0.002) compared with the sedentary group. We also observed that yoga practitioners had less vasomotor symptoms and memory/concentration disorders than PA practitioners (p = 0.010 and p = 0.047) and sedentary women (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001) and also used fewer drugs than the PA (p < 0.001) and the sedentary groups (p = 0.001).ConclusionsYoga practitioners who started to practice in premenopause had satisfactory results on the frequency and intensity of climacteric symptoms and quality of life. Although further research is required to support our findings, we conclude that yoga practice may represent an efficient non-pharmacological approach to manage and prevent climacteric symptoms.  相似文献

BackgroundA combination of yoga practices has been documented to reduce stress and stress-induced cortisol levels. The objective of the current study is to examine the effects of six months of a single pranayama practice (Bhramari [Bhr. P]) on reducing salivary cortisol response to the cold pressor test (CPT) among adolescents.MethodsTwenty-six healthy adolescents between the ages of 11 and 19 were randomly assigned to either yoga group (n-13) or control group (n-13). Yoga group participants were trained to do Bhr. P for 45 min, thrice a week for six months. All participants underwent CPT at baseline and at end of six months. Saliva samples were collected at baseline (t0), at 20 min (t1), 40 min (t2), and 60 min after the CPT (t3).ResultsContradictory to our hypothesis, participants in the yoga group exhibited a higher salivary cortisol response to the CPT at t1 (p = 0.04) when compared to the control group. However, the t3 salivary cortisol levels showed a statistically significant reduction (p = 0.03) in yoga group when compared to the control group. A significant interaction with time (F (1, 88) = 316.5, p = .001, ηp2:0.91) and between the group × time (F (3, 88) = 2.83, p = 0.04, ηp2:0.8) was found after the intervention.ConclusionsAn increase in the cortisol responsiveness observed in the study is an indication of the adaptive capability achieved through regular yoga training, evidenced by an initial rise in cortisol followed by a rapid fall below baseline after 60 min. Further research is required to conclusively determine the changes in cortisol levels over time in response to stress in long-term yoga practitioners.  相似文献

BackgroundDyslipidemia has been associated with endothelial dysfunction in childhood. Impairment of renal function has been demonstrated in dyslipidemic adults.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess markers of early endothelial and renal dysfunction in dyslipidemic children.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study of 100 children with dyslipidemia and 100 age- and sex-matched control subjects without dyslipidemia aged 7–16 years. Renal dysfunction was assessed by measurement of serum creatinine and cystatin C levels, urinary beta 2-microglobulin levels, urinary albumin to creatinine (Alb:Cr) ratio, and by the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), based on serum creatinine or cystatin C. Endothelial dysfunction and early vascular changes were evaluated by ultrasound assessment of flow mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery, and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), respectively.ResultsThe markers of early renal dysfunction showed no difference between the dyslipidemic children and control subjects except for the urinary Alb:Cr ratio that was higher in the dyslipidemic children (median, 0.007 mg/mg vs 0.005 mg/mg, p = 0.004). The urinary Alb:Cr ratio was positively correlated with the triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (r = 0.28, p = 0.013). FMD values were lower in the dyslipidemic children than in the control subjects (8.504 ± 4.73% vs 10.535 ± 4.35%, p = 0.004), but cIMT did not differ between groups. This decrease in FMD values was evident in children aged ≥10 years. FMD was independently associated with the level of lipoprotein (a) (beta = ?0.29, p = 0.01).ConclusionAmong markers of endothelial and renal dysfunction investigated, FMD was found to be lower and the urinary Alb:Cr ratio higher in children with dyslipidemia.  相似文献

Background/purposeThe diagnosis of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) was established by changes in lung function after exercise challenge. The prevalence of EIB and factors related to EIB were not fully described in children with asthma. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and predictors of EIB in children with asthma.MethodsA total of 149 children with physician-diagnosed asthma above 5 years of age underwent standardized treadmill exercise challenge for EIB and methacholine challenge for airway hyper-responsiveness from October 2015 to December 2016.ResultsEIB presented in 52.5% of children with asthma. Compared with children without EIB, there were more patients with atopic dermatitis in children with EIB (p = 0.038). Allergic to Dermatohagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae were also found more in children with EIB (p = 0.045 and 0.048 respectively). Maximal decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) were highest in patients who were most sensitive to methacholine provocation (provocation concentration causing 20% fall in FEV1 [PC20] ≤ 1 mg/mL). Patients, who were more sensitive to methacholine challenge (with lower PC20 levels), develop EIB with more decline in FEV1 after exercise challenge (p = 0.038). Among patients with EIB, airflow limitation development in patient with methacholine-induced airway hyper-responsiveness was more abrupt and severe compared with patients without airway hyper-responsiveness (p = 0.045 and 0.033 respectively).ConclusionEIB presented in 52.5% of children with asthma. The more severe methacholine-induced hyper-responsiveness, the higher prevalence of EIB as well as the severity.  相似文献

BackgroundThe efficacy of different forms of acupuncture for the treatment of nocturnal enuresis in children is not known.ObjectiveTo determine the efficacy of different forms of acupuncture, such as manual acupuncture, laser/electroacupuncture, acupoint injection, and moxibustion, for the treatment of nocturnal enuresis.MethodsA literature search was conducted on Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, CINAHL, PubMed, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, and Scopus from database inception to September 2020. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was utilised to evaluate the risk of bias in each included study. The quality of the evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool.ResultsThirteen trials (n = 890) were included. Meta-analyses revealed significantly greater numbers of children reporting improved nocturnal enuresis in the moxibustion (p = 0.004), acupoint injection (p = 0.020), and laser acupuncture (p = 0.001) groups than in the control groups. Meta-analyses showed no significant differences in the numbers of children reporting the complete cure of nocturnal enuresis between laser acupuncture and desmopressin (p = 0.57).ConclusionsThe review identified moxibustion, acupoint injections, and laser acupuncture as effective treatments for nocturnal enuresis in children. However, the evidence for these interventions is limited and of very-low-grade quality. The effects of laser acupuncture compared with desmopressin remain inconclusive.  相似文献

BackgroundMechanisms by which mind-body practice may improve exercise behaviors in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) are unknown.PurposeTo identify predictors of exercise behaviors developed in response to a tai chi intervention.MethodsWe conducted an exploratory analysis using data from a pilot study of tai chi for physically inactive patients with CHD. We used Latent Class Analysis to identify patterns of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (accelerometry-assessed, average min/week) over the 9-month study period. Logistic regression was used to evaluate associations between MVPA patterns and changes in exercise self-efficacy (Self-efficacy for exercise scale), social support (Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support), resilience (Brief Resilience Survey), and mindfulness (Five Facets of Mindfulness) at 6 months.ResultsData supported a 3-class model over time: 31% of participants were in class 1 (high and sustained MVPA, > 200 min/week), 21% were in class 2 (low and decreasing MVPA, < 100 > 50 min/week), and 48% in class 3 (low and stable MVPA, < 50 min/week). Higher mindfulness scores at 6 months were associated with a high and sustained MVPA pattern (b = 1.89, SE = 0.15, p = .01). Social support was inversely associated with low and decreasing MVPA (b = -0.72, SE = 0.34, p = .04). No associations were noted with the other factors.ConclusionsImprovements in mindfulness were associated with a distinct high and sustained MVPA pattern. Although only hypothesis-generating, these findings suggest that improvements in mindfulness skills could be a mechanism for the possible effect of Tai Chi in the promotion of MVPA.  相似文献

ObjectivesIron overload is a common complication experienced by transfusion-dependent children with hemoglobin disorders. Chelators such as deferasirox (DFX) and deferiprone (DFP) are effective in overcoming this problem. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of DFX compared to DFP in treating iron overload amongst pediatric patients with hemoglobin disorders.Material and methodsPubMed and Cochrane Central were searched from their inception until Dec 21 2021, for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and observational studies, which assessed the efficacy of DFX compared to DFP in the treatment of inherited hemoglobin disorders. The outcomes of interest included myocardial iron concentration (MRI T2*) at the end of the trial and change in mean serum ferritin (SF) levels at the 6 and 12 months mark. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for continuous outcomes using random effects model.ResultsA total of 5 studies comprising 607 children were included. The results of our analysis revealed no significant difference between DFX and DFP in MRI T2* at the end of treatment (WMD: ?0.92; 95% CI [?3.35, 1.52]; p = 0.46; I2 = 0). Moreover, there has been no significant difference noted in SF levels at both 6 months (WMD: 97.31; 95% CI [?236.16, 430.77]; p = 0.57; I2 = 0) and 12 months (WMD: 46.99; 95% CI [?191.42, 285.40]; p = 0.70; I2 = 0) respectively.ConclusionOur analysis shows no significant difference between the efficacy of DFX and DFP in the management of iron overload in children with inherited blood disorders. Future large-scale clinical trials are required to further validate our results.  相似文献

ContextYoga improves quality of life in elders ≥65 years, but studies among elders with chronic pain are limited.ObjectiveConduct a feasibility study of gentle yoga among elders in assisted and independent living.DesignSingle arm pre/post clinical trial.SubjectsAdults (≥65 years of age) with self-identified chronic pain (≥3 on a 10-point scale, lasting for ≥3 months) and no current yoga practice.InterventionTen weekly 60-min gentle yoga classes tailored to elderly adults.Outcome measuresAt baseline, weeks 5, 10 (end of intervention), and 20 (follow-up), we collected data on feasibility (adherence, retention, safety), pain, anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and physical function.ResultsTwenty-six participants enrolled (88% women, 77% white, 58% in assisted living) with average age of 86.6 ± 4.4 (Mean, STD). Twenty participants completed the intervention, with 90% adhering (completing ≥6 classes). Nine participants (45% of completers) experienced adverse events, which were non-serious and related to transient musculoskeletal pain. No adverse events resulted in study withdrawal. Participants reported being somewhat likely to recommend yoga to a friend, and quite a bit likely to do yoga again. At the end of the intervention, four of twenty participants reported practicing yoga outside of class. Anxiety significantly decreased from 5.80 (SE=0.90) to 4.44 (SE=0.74) (p = 0.014), but there were no changes in other measures.ConclusionsOur pilot 10-week yoga study was generally safe for and suitable to assisted and independent living elderly adults. Future studies are needed to examine other effects of yoga in assisted/independent living adults with chronic pain.  相似文献

BackgroundThe causative pathogen of pediatric osteomyelitis is often unidentified despite culturing attempts. This study evaluated and compared the clinical characteristics, therapeutic approach, and outcomes of osteomyelitis caused by unknown pathogens and identified microorganisms.MethodThis 17-year retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary hospital in central Taiwan. Medical records of children aged less than 18 years with a diagnosis of osteomyelitis between 2003 and 2019 were reviewed.ResultIn total, 70 patients (median age = 6.4 years; male = 65.7%) fulfilled the inclusion criteria, of whom 33 (47.1%) were culture negative. Staphylococcus aureus was the main pathogen (67.6% of identified bacteria). The proportion of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was 44% and 54.5% of the MRSA isolates exhibited clindamycin resistance. Compared to children with culture-positive osteomyelitis, those with culture-negative osteomyelitis had a lower rate of concomitant septic arthritis (40.5% vs. 15.2%, p = 0.019) and leukocytosis on presentation (45.9% vs. 21.2%, p = 0.030); they also required fewer surgical interventions (56.8% vs. 24.2%, p = 0.006) and received a shorter course of total antibiotic therapy (49.0 vs. 43.0 days, p = 0.045). In the culture-negative group, the MRSA coverage rate was 18.8% during initial empirical therapy and increased to 59.4% during further adjusted therapy. The overall complication rate was 18.6% and was lower in the culture-negative group (32.4% vs. 3.0%, p = 0.002).ConclusionIn areas where community-associated MRSA and clindamycin resistance strains are a concern, empirical glycopeptide-based therapy is suggested in pediatric osteomyelitis, particularly in those with culture-negative infections.  相似文献

ContextNumerous scientific studies have investigated the impact of yoga on cognition in children and adults. However, fewer studies have assessed the impact of yogic practices on cognition in children and adolescents with visual impairment. Despite their keen intellectual abilities and advanced linguistic skills, teens with visual impairment often experience difficulties with cognitive control and behavioral regulation.Memory plays an important role in cognition. Besides storing information, memory is also used for recall, defined as the retrieval of information the brain has recently been exposed to, and recognition, defined as the ability to recognize or retrieve the information previously encountered and stored in the brain.ObjectiveThe objective of the study was to observe the effectiveness of Prajñā Yoga on enhancing the cognition and verbal memory in adolescents with visual impairment. Degree of visual impairment and age of onset of visual impairment were considered while analyzing the study data.DesignAn open-trial, single arm, pre–post study design was adopted. 273 adolescents with visual impairment were assessed across India using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), at baseline (before the intervention), immediately after the intervention, and at 40 days after the intervention. RAVLT measures recall and recognition through verbal memory.InterventionPrajñā Yoga (PY) or the Art of Living Intuition Program is a unique intervention, based on ancient techniques of Pranayama, Super Brain Yoga, and Meditation, taught to children & adolescents between the ages 5 and 17.ResultsThe mean scores for Recognition (p=0.011) and Immediate recall (p=0.011) improved significantly after PY for the entire study population, regardless of the degree of visual impairment, gender and age of onset. BackgroundSerum or cord blood soluble Fas ligand (FasL) has been related to asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis in cross-sectional and short-term follow-up studies. However, the association of cord blood soluble FasL with long-term allergic outcomes has seldom been investigated.MethodsThe Prediction of Allergies in Taiwanese Children birth cohort study recruited healthy newborns upon delivery. At birth, blood was collected from the umbilical cords of these children, and the cord blood soluble Fas ligand levels were measured. At the age of seven years, the allergic outcome of each child was diagnosed by pediatric allergists and pulmonologists. Tests were conducted to measure the specific immunoglobulin E, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), and pulmonary function levels of each child.ResultsCord blood soluble FasL levels were higher in seven-year-old children with allergic rhinitis (Odds ratio [OR] = 2.41, p = 0.012) and expiratory airway obstruction (the highest forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity < 90%, OR = 2.11, p = 0.022). The FeNO and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus-specific immunoglobulin E levels of seven-year-old children were positively correlated with cord blood soluble FasL levels (p = 0.006 and 0.02, respectively).ConclusionIn this birth cohort, the cord blood soluble FasL levels were associated with allergic rhinitis, obstructive-type lung function, FeNO, and house dust mite sensitization in 7-year-old children. The cord blood soluble FasL level might be used as a predictor for allergic diseases in children who are 7 years old.  相似文献

Background: The Hispanic/Latinx population constitutes the fastest growing ethnic/racial minority group in the United States (U.S.). Compared to their non-Hispanic/Latinx White counterparts, Hispanic/Latinx youth experience more depression and anxiety, and have more unmet mental health needs (88% vs 76%). Emerging research supports the psychological and physical benefits of mind-body awareness training to enhance well-being and mental health, but almost no studies have recruited ethnic/racial minority samples. Purpose: The current study examined the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary impact of a mindfulness-based yoga program among Hispanic/Latinx public high school students. Procedures: Participants (N = 187) were recruited from a local public high school in a large multi-ethnic urban school district in the Southeast U.S. and participated in 6 weekly hour-long sessions of mindfulness-based yoga. Participants completed assessments at pretest and one month after program completion. Main Findings: The sample was predominantly Hispanic/Latinx (95%) and female (64%), on average 15.2 years old (SD = 1.3), and 51% were born outside the U.S. Participants reported on average a 14.2% reduction in depressive symptoms (pretest mean = 5.51, posttest mean = 4.73, p = .032, Cohen's d = 0.2), a 14.9% reduction in anxiety symptoms (pretest mean = 9.90, posttest mean = 8.42, p = .005, Cohen's d = 0.2), and a 21.9% reduction in stress (pretest mean = 9.66, posttest mean = 7.54, p < .001, Cohen's d = 0.5). Conclusion: These findings provide support for the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based yoga program for Hispanic/Latinx adolescents, a medically underrepresented group experiencing significant mental health disparities.  相似文献

PurposeThis study aimed to evaluate whether vitamin D supplementation can reduce the incidence of influenza and enterovirus infection in Taiwanese children.MethodsThis randomized, double-blind, controlled trial included children aged two to five years between April 2018 and October 2019 from daycare centers. All the participants were randomly assigned to a vitamin D supplementation group (2000 IU/day) or placebo group for one month. The primary outcome was the incidence of influenza and enterovirus infection in the following six months, and the secondary outcome was the incidence of influenza and enterovirus infection in the children's household members.ResultsTwo hundred and forty-eight children participated. The vitamin D group showed a relative risk reduction of 84% against influenza compared to the placebo group but did not reach statistical significance. Kaplan–Meier curves revealed that the placebo group had a higher probability of influenza infection than the vitamin D group (log-rank test, p = 0.055), but the incidence of enterovirus infection was similar between the two groups (p = 0.946) among children. Among children's household members, the incidence of influenza (p = 0.586) and enterovirus infection (p = 0.528) were both similar between the two groups. All children who were tested for serum 25(OH)D levels after vitamin D intervention had 25(OH)D levels above 30 ng/mlConclusionVitamin D supplementation may have a small preventative effect against influenza infection but does not affect enterovirus infection among preschool children. A high-dose short-term vitamin D intervention might be a way to elevate children's serum vitamin D levels in the first month of starting kindergarten.  相似文献

BackgroundNorovirus is a common acute gastroenteritis (AGE) pathogen across all age groups worldwide, which is difficult to differentiate from other pathogens. This study aimed to understand the clinical characteristics and risk factors of norovirus gastroenteritis among children in Taiwan.MethodsA prospective AGE surveillance study was conducted in children aged ≤5 years who were hospitalized in 10 major hospitals in Taiwan between 2014 and 2017. The non-AGE control group included healthy children who were matched based on age, gender, season, and geographic area.ResultsOverall, 674 norovirus gastroenteritis patients were enrolled. Fever (p < 0.001), mucoid stool (p < 0.001), and bloody stool (p < 0.001) occurred less frequently among norovirus gastroenteritis patients. Norovirus gastroenteritis patients yielded lower CRP values on admission (21.78 ± 36.81 vs. 46.26 ± 58.12 mg/L, p < 0.001) than non-norovirus controls. Norovirus gastroenteritis patients were associated with higher direct contact rates with AGE patients within 1 week (30.5% vs. 0.97%, p < 0.001), lower hand wash rates before meals (21.6% vs. 15.4%, p = 0.001), lower human milk (15.8% vs. 19.8%, p = 0.045) and guava consumption rates (17.8% vs. 24.3%, p = 0.002) than non-AGE participants.ConclusionsBody temperature, stool characteristics, and CRP value can help distinguish the norovirus from other pathogens. The major risk factor of norovirus AGE is contact with AGE patient. Higher frequency of hand wash, human milk, and guava intake may be protective against norovirus gastroenteritis.  相似文献

BackgroundAlthough yoga is frequently used by patients with asthma, its efficacy in alleviating asthma remains unclear.ObjectiveTo systematically assess and meta-analyze the available data on efficacy and safety of yoga in alleviating asthma.MethodsMEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PsycINFO, CAM-Quest, CAMbase, and IndMED were searched through January 2014. Randomized controlled trials of yoga for patients with asthma were included if they assessed asthma control, symptoms, quality of life, and/or pulmonary function. For each outcome, standardized mean differences (SMDs) or risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane tool.ResultsFourteen randomized controlled trials with 824 patients were included. Evidence for effects of yoga compared with usual care was found for asthma control (RR, 10.64; 95% CI, 1.98 to 57.19; P = .006), asthma symptoms (SMD, −0.37; 95% CI, −0.55 to −0.19; P < .001), quality of life (SMD, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.39 to 1.33; P < .001), peak expiratory flow rate (SMD, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.32 to 0.67; P < .001), and ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second to forced vital capacity (SMD, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.24 to 0.75; P < .001); evidence for effects of yoga compared with psychological interventions was found for quality of life (SMD, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.22 to 0.99; P = .002) and peak expiratory flow rate (SMD, 2.87; 95% CI, 0.14 to 5.60; P = .04). No evidence for effects of yoga compared with sham yoga or breathing exercises was revealed. No effect was robust against all potential sources of bias. Yoga was not associated with serious adverse events.ConclusionYoga cannot be considered a routine intervention for asthmatic patients at this point. It can be considered an ancillary intervention or an alternative to breathing exercises for asthma patients interested in complementary interventions.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo examine the molecular effects of mindful activities such as yoga and meditationDesignThis was an open label single arm exploratory yoga intervention study.Study participants64 healthy individuals within the age of 18–60 years were recruited for this one month yoga intervention study.InterventionCommon Yoga Protocol (CYP) is a standardized yoga protocol released by Ministry of AYUSH, India for International Yoga Day. It includes all aspects of yoga i.e. asanas, pranayama and meditation. It is designed for adoption by all age groups for the health of community.Outcome measuresThe participants were assessed for biochemical parameters including Fasting Sugar and Lipid profile. The molecular markers of neurogenesis (i.e. Brain derived Neurotropic Factor, BDNF) and Angiogenesis (i.e. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, VEGF and Angiogenin) along with Amyloid β (marker related to neuro-degenerative diseases) were assessed. All the assessments were made at baseline and after one month of the intervention.ResultsAfter one month of CYP practice High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) levels increased significantly (p<0.001), although other biochemical parameters i.e. fasting sugar and other lipid assessments were found to be unaltered. Angiogenesis marker, angiogenin was increased significantly (p<0.002), other angiogenesis marker VEGF did not show any change along with BDNF, marker of neurogenesis. Amyloid β levels were also unaltered. Even though individual levels of VEGF and Amyloid β did not show any change, proportion of VEGF to Amyloid β showed a significant increase (p<0.001) after one month of CYP intervention indicating that the change in VEGF levels was significantly higher than the change in Amyloid β levels.ConclusionCYP practice may influence cell survival pathways mediated by angiogenic and neurogenic cross talk. Hence, CYP can be considered as a preventive measure for diseases associated with impaired angiogenic and neurogenic mechanism. This is the first study to examine the effects of CYP at the molecular level.  相似文献

BackgroundNoroviruses (NoVs) are a major etiological agent of sporadic acute gastroenteritis worldwide.ObjectivesTo detect, quantify and characterize genogroups and genotypes of NoVs in children with and without gastrointestinal symptoms.Study designNoVs were investigated by RT-PCR in a total of 319 fecal specimens from children up to three years old with (n = 229) and without (n = 90) acute diarrhea, between February 2003 and June 2004 in the emergency room in Vitória, Southeastern Brazil. NoVs were quantified by real-time PCR and genotyped.ResultsNoVs were detected in 17% (40/229) and 13% (12/90) of symptomatic and asymptomatic children, respectively. Six NoV-rotavirus A mixed infections were observed. Fifty-one strains were characterized as NoV GII and one as GI. Twenty strains were characterized as GII/4 (9/13), GII/3 (1/13), GII/6 (2/13) and GII/14 (1/13) in symptomatic and GII/3 (6/7) and GII/8 (1/7) in asymptomatic children. The median RNA viral loads were 8.39 and 7.15 log10 copies/g of fecal specimens for symptomatic and asymptomatic children, respectively (p = 0.011). NoV load was lower when it was present in a mixed infection with rotavirus A (p = 0.0005).ConclusionsThis study demonstrates a diversity of NoV strains circulating in this geographic area, and reports GII/8 and GII/14 in the American Continent for the first time. In addition, it confirms GII/4 as the most prevalent genotype in symptomatic children and identified GII/3 in an important frequency, especially in asymptomatic children. Furthermore, preliminary results show that symptomatic patients present a viral load that is significantly greater than asymptomatic children (p = 0.011).  相似文献

Although studies have shown that increases in the frequency of social media use may be associated with increases in depressive symptoms of individuals with depression, the current study aimed to identify specific social media behaviors related to major depressive disorder (MDD). Millennials (N = 504) who actively use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and/or Snapchat participated in an online survey assessing major depression and specific social media behaviors. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify specific social media behaviors associated with the presence of MDD. The results identified five key social media factors associated with MDD. Individuals who were more likely to compare themselves to others better off than they were (p = 0.005), those who indicated that they would be more bothered by being tagged in unflattering pictures (p = 0.011), and those less likely to post pictures of themselves along with other people (p = 0.015) were more likely to meet the criteria for MDD. Participants following 300 + Twitter accounts were less likely to have MDD (p = 0.041), and those with higher scores on the Social Media Addiction scale were significantly more likely to meet the criteria for MDD (p = 0.031). Participating in negative social media behaviors is associated with a higher likelihood of having MDD. Research and clinical implications are considered.  相似文献

PurposeTo assess the serum fetuin A concentration as a potential marker of subclinical atherosclerosis in obese children with NAFLD.Material/methodsA prospective analysis of 45 obese children initially diagnosed with liver pathology (elevated serum ALT activity and/or ultrasonographic liver brightness and/or hepatomegaly) was conducted. The diagnosis of NAFLD was established in the children with elevated serum ALT activity and liver steatosis on ultrasound examination. Viral hepatitis, autoimmune, metabolic liver diseases (Wilson disease, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, cystic fibrosis) and drug and toxin-induced liver injury were excluded in all children. The degree of liver steatosis was graded according to Saverymuttu scale and the total liver lipids concentration was assessed using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS).ResultsSerum fetuin A concentration was significantly higher in examined children compared to the control group (n = 30) (p = 0.00002). Higher serum fetuin A concentration was also observed in children with NAFLD (n = 19) in comparison to the controls (p = 0.000026). Additionally, higher BMI values, waist circumferences, ALT and GGT activity, intensity of liver steatosis on ultrasound and total concentration of lipids in the liver in 1H MRS were found in children with NAFLD compared to the rest of the examined obese patients (n = 26). There was not found any correlation of the investigated glycoprotein with any other assessed parameters both in children with NAFLD and obese children without NAFLD.ConclusionHigher serum fetuin A concentration found in children with NAFLD compared to the control group support the hypothesis that atherosclerotic processes may develop faster in hepatopatic obese patients.  相似文献
