The purpose of this study was to examine the responses of peak torque (PT), mean power output (MP), mechanomyographic (MMG) and electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) of the vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), and vastus medialis (VM) in males and females during maximal, concentric isokinetic muscle actions. Subjects performed maximal leg extensions at 60 degrees s(-1), 120 degrees s(-1), 180 degrees s(-1), 240 degrees s(-1), 300 degrees s(-1), 360 degrees s(-1), 420 degrees s(-1), and 480 degrees s(-1). No gender differences were observed, but there were muscle-specific differences for the patterns of MMG MPF, EMG amplitude, and EMG MPF. The MP and MMG amplitude increased to 180-240 degrees s(-1), plateaued, and then decreased to 480 degrees s(-1). MMG MPF for the VL and VM remained unchanged to 300 degrees s(-1), but then increased to 480 degrees s(-1). The EMG amplitude for the RF and EMG MPF for the VL decreased across velocity. Overall, these findings indicated that there were muscle-specific, velocity-related differences in the associations among motor control strategies (EMG amplitude and MPF) and the mechanical aspects of isokinetic muscular activity (MMG amplitude and MPF).  相似文献

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of electrode placement over the estimated innervation zone (IZ) for the vastus lateralis, as well as proximal and distal to the estimated IZ, on the isometric torque-related patterns for electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF). METHODS: Eleven men performed submaximal to maximal isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors. Surface EMG signals were recorded simultaneously from the vastus lateralis muscle with bipolar electrode arrangements placed over the estimated IZ, as well as proximally and distally to the estimated IZ. RESULTS: The results indicate that the patterns of response and mean values for absolute and normalized EMG amplitude and MPF versus isometric torque over the estimated IZ were not consistently different from those away from the IZ. There were, however, mean differences among electrode-placement sites for absolute EMG amplitude values (distal site > proximal and/or estimated IZ sites by approximately 76 microVrms) that were not eliminated with normalization (proximal site > distal and/or estimated IZ sites by approximately 5% max). CONCLUSION: Although these differences were not attributable to the IZ, they suggest that during isometric muscle actions, normalized EMG amplitude values from different individuals cannot be compared if the EMG signals are detected from different electrode locations over the muscle of interest.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was twofold: (a) to examine the influence of the innervation zone (IZ) on EMG signals from bipolar electrode arrangements that have their center point directly over the IZ, 10 mm distal to the IZ, 10 mm proximal to the IZ, and 20 mm distal to the IZ and (b) to investigate the effects of normalization on EMG amplitude and mean power frequency (MPF) values over the IZ. METHODS: Ten men (mean +/- SD age = 23.6 +/- 3.0 yr) performed submaximal to maximal isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors, and four separate bipolar surface EMG signals were detected simultaneously from the vastus lateralis. One bipolar electrode arrangement had its center point located directly over the IZ for the vastus lateralis, whereas the other electrode arrangements had their center points 10 mm proximal, 10 mm distal, and 20 mm distal to the IZ. RESULTS: The results showed that there were no consistent patterns among the four electrode arrangements for the absolute and the normalized EMG amplitude and MPF versus isometric torque relationships. The IZ had the greatest influence on absolute EMG amplitude and MPF values when the center point of the electrode arrangement was directly over the IZ and a decreased effect when the center point was shifted away from the IZ. In addition, normalization reduced the influence of the IZ on EMG amplitude and MPF values. CONCLUSION: Thus, these findings suggested that in situations where it is difficult to identify the precise location and/or avoid the IZ, the EMG signals can provide useful information regarding isometric torque-related changes in normalized EMG amplitude and center frequency values.  相似文献

PURPOSE: This study was designed to compare mechanomyography (MMG) and the force relationship during isometric ramp contractions of biceps brachii muscles in females and males to identify sex differences in the MMG responses. METHODS: Subjects (10 females and 9 males; age range, 20-26 yr) were asked to exert an isometric elbow flexion torque from 5 to 80% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) at a constant rate of 10% MVC per second. The MMG signal was normalized to muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) as measured by ultrasound imaging. RESULTS: MVC and CSA were significantly different between the two sex groups (males>females); however, there was no sex difference in the MVC relative to muscle CSA (MVC/CSA). The root mean squared amplitude of the MMG (RMSMMG) was significantly greater in the male group than the female group. The RMSMMG relative to muscle CSA was also different between the two sex groups (males>females). The sex difference in the RMSMMG/CSA was more pronounced with increasing torque. The torque levels at which the inflection points in the MMG amplitude were located were different between the two sex groups. The mean power frequency (MPF) of the MMG in the female group increased monotonously, which was different from that in the male group. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the sex differences in MMG responses and motor unit (MU) activation strategy result from the predominant activity of the MU with slow-twitch fibers and an effective fused tetanus in females. In addition, the sex-related differences in muscle morphology, subcutaneous adipose tissue, and muscle stiffness appear to be insufficiently reflected in the present MMG responses, particularly relative to muscle CSA.  相似文献

Previous research has demonstrated fatigue resistance for eccentric compared with concentric muscle contractions in the lower extremity. The purpose of this study was to determine if eccentric fatigue resistance was also evident in the internal and external rotators of the shoulder. Ten subjects performed three sets of 32 maximum isokinetic contractions in shoulder internal and external rotation at 120 degrees /s. One arm performed eccentric contractions and the contralateral arm performed concentric contractions. Subjects were also tested for isometric strength prior to and immediately following the isokinetic contractions. Percent change in isokinetic torque (first five repetitions versus last five for each set) and isometric torque was compared between the arms performing eccentric and concentric contractions. Fatigue with isokinetic contractions was not different between eccentric and concentric internal rotation (25 % vs. 26 %, p = 0.76) and external rotation (24 % vs. 32 %, p = 0.11). Similarly, fatigue with isometric contractions was not different between eccentric and concentric internal rotation (11 % vs. 5 %. p = 0.33) and external rotation (15 % vs. 7 %, p = 0.07). These results indicate that unlike previously described fatigue resistance for eccentric muscle contractions in the quadriceps, dorsiflexors and plantarflexors, fatigue was not different between eccentric and concentric muscle contractions of the internal and external rotators of the shoulder.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of isometric training performed with progressive versus rapid rate of contraction on the knee extensor neuromuscular properties over a 7-wk period. METHODS: Sixteen healthy male subjects trained quadriceps femoris muscle in a leg extension machine three times a week during 7 wk. The training sessions consisted of six sets of six maximal isometric contractions. A first group trained by performing progressive contractions lasting 4 s, whereas a second group performed contractions with a rapid rate of contraction (i.e., ballistic contractions) lasting about 1 s. RESULTS: Both groups significantly increased the isometric and isokinetic voluntary torque, and the respective absolute or relative gains were comparable. Isometric training performed with progressive rate of contraction affected the evoked action potential (M wave) of the vastus lateralis muscle and not the related twitch properties. On the other hand, the isometric training completed with ballistic contractions significantly modified the twitch contractile properties of the knee extensors and not the associated M waves of both vastus medialis and vastus lateralis. CONCLUSION: Knee extensors adapted specifically their neuromuscular properties to the type of rate of contraction performed during 7-wk isometric resistance training. Progressive isometric contractions produced modifications of the nervous system at peripheral level (i.e., muscle membrane electrical activity), whereas ballistic isometric contractions affected the knee extensor contractile muscle properties (i.e., excitation-contraction coupling).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine concentric, isometric, and eccentric strength reductions in the quadriceps muscle following a prolonged running exercise. Before and after a 2 h run (28.4+/-1.4 km) peak torque (PT) of the knee extensors at angular velocities of -120, -90, -60, 0, 60, 120, 180, 240 degrees x s(-1) using an isokinetic dynamometer, electromyographic (EMG) activity of the vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis (VM) muscles and height of a counter movement jump were recorded in twelve well-trained triathletes. Counter movement jump performances decreased by 10% and PT values were all significantly lower (p < 0.01) at each angular velocity following the run. The torque loss was significantly (p < 0.01) greater under eccentric contractions (from 18 to 21%) than under concentric ones (from 11 to 14%). EMG activity (RMS) was lower in both VL and VM muscles after the 2 h run but no difference existed in RMS losses between concentric and eccentric contractions. The present results demonstrate that 1) a prolonged running exercise more greatly affects eccentric force production in the quadriceps muscle, and 2) this specificity seems to be due to an impairment of the muscular contractile mechanism rather than a modification to the neural input.

The aim of this study was to investigate changes in mechanomyographic (MMG) and the surface electromyographic (EMG) signals during and after fatiguing shoulder eccentric contractions in a group consisting of 12 males and 12 females. Exerted force, MMG, EMG, pain and rate of perceived exertion were assessed before, during and after repeated high-intensity eccentric exercises. Bouts of eccentric contractions caused a decrease in the exerted force for males (P<0.05) and an increase in the rate of perceived exertion and pain for both genders (P<0.05). During eccentric exercise, the root mean square (RMS) values of the MMG signal increased (P<0.05). The mean power frequency (MPF) values of the EMG signal decreased at the end of each eccentric bout for both genders (P<0.05); the decrease was higher for females compared with males (P<0.05). Immediately after eccentric exercise in static abduction of the upper limbs, the MMG RMS and MPF values increased (P<0.05). The present study showed that (1) neuromuscular changes associated with pain and changes in muscle stiffness and (2) changes in motor units strategy during fatigue development in shoulder muscle are reflected in the MMG and EMG signals.  相似文献

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to quantify and compare mean quadriceps muscle activity and applied load for eight seated quadriceps exercises using four types of resistance. METHODS: Using surface electromyography (EMG), the right rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), and vastus medialis oblique (VMO) muscles of 52 university students aged 23.5 +/- 3.4 yr (35 female and 17 male subjects) were examined during the exercises. Resistance devices included an ankle weight (78 N), blue Thera-Band tubing, a Cybex 340 isokinetic dynamometer, and an Inertial Exercise Trainer (IET). Electrogoniometer data were collected to determine the range of motion (ROM), angular velocity, and phase (concentric/eccentric) of exercise. Load cell data were analyzed to determine tubing and IET applied loads during exercise. A within-subjects criterion was used to improve intrasubject EMG reliability. All EMG values were normalized to a 100% maximum voluntary isometric contraction. Repeated measures ANOVAs with Bonferroni comparisons were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Within-subject effects of muscle and exercise were significant (P < 0.05) for both the concentric and eccentric muscle activity. The interaction effect of mean average EMG amplitude across exercises for the concentric phases of knee extension was significant (P = 0.001). No significant interactions were found for the eccentric phases of all seated quadriceps exercises. None of the exercises selectively isolated the VMO over the VL; however, the VMO/VL ratio was less (P < 0.05) during the concentric phases of the free weight and elastic tubing exercise when compared with the others. Eccentric phase VMO/VL ratios revealed that inertial resistance elicited greater muscle activity than other forms of resistance exercise. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest clinicians should consider biomechanical and resistance data when developing a strengthening program for the quadriceps muscle. Some seated quadriceps exercises may be more appropriate for certain rehabilitation goals than others.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential differences in peak isokinetic concentric end eccentric torque following low- and high-intensity cycle exercise fatigue protocols. Ten healthy, recreationally-active men were tested in a balanced, randomized testing sequence for peak eccentric and concentric isokinetic torque (60 degrees/sec) immediately before and after three experimental conditions each separated by 48 hours: 1) a bout of high intensity cycling consisting of a maximal 90-second sprint; 2) a bout of low-intensity cycling at 60 rpm equated for total work with the high-intensity protocol: and 3) no exercise (control bout). Blood was drawn from an antecubital vein and plasma lactate concentrations were determined immediately before and after each experimental bout. Post-exercise plasma lactate concentrations were 15.1 +/- 2.5 and 4.7 +/- 1.9 mmol l(-1), respectively, following the high- and low-intensity protocols. The high intensity exercise bout resulted in the only post-exercise decrease in concentric and eccentric isokinetic peak torque. The percent decline in maximal force production was significantly (P< 0.05) greater for concentric muscle actions compared to eccentric (29 vs 15%, respectively). In conclusion, a 90-second maximal cycling sprint results in a significant decline in maximal torque of both concentric and eccentric muscle actions with the greatest magnitude observed during concentric muscle actions.  相似文献

Intramuscular pressures, electromyography (EMG) and torque generation during isometric, concentric and eccentric maximal isokinetic muscle activity were recorded in 10 healthy volunteers. Pressure and EMG activity were continuously and simultaneously measured side by side in the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles. Ankle joint torque and position were monitored continuously by an isokinetic dynamometer during plantar flexion and dorsiflexion of the foot. The increased force generation during eccentric muscular activity, compared with other muscular activity, was not accompanied by higher intramuscular pressure. Thus, this study demonstrated that eccentric muscular activity generated higher torque values for each increment of intramuscular pressure. Intramuscular pressures during antagonistic co-activation were significantly higher in the tibialis anterior muscle (42–46% of maximal agonistic activity) compared with the soleus muscle (12–29% of maximal agonistic activity) and was largely due to active recruitment of muscle fibers. In summary, eccentric muscular activity creates higher torque values with no additional increase of the intramuscular pressure compared with concentric and isometric muscular activity.  相似文献

This study compared the effects of concentric and eccentric training on neuromuscular adaptations in young subjects. Twenty‐two men and women were assigned to one of two groups: concentric (CON, n = 11) and eccentric (ECC, n = 11) training. Training consisted of 6 weeks of isokinetic exercise, performed twice weekly, starting with two sets of eight repetitions, and progressing to five sets of 10 repetitions. Subjects were tested in strength variables [concentric, eccentric, and isometric peak torque (PT), and rate of force development (RFD)], muscle conduction velocity (CV), neuromuscular activity, vastus lateralis (VL) muscle thickness, and echo intensity as determined by ultrasonography. There were similar increases in the concentric and eccentric PTs in both the CON and ECC groups (P < 0.01), but only the ECC group showed an increase in isometric PT (P < 0.001). Similarly, both groups exhibited increased VL muscle thickness, CV, and RFD, and reduced VL echo intensity (P < 0.05). Significant correlations were observed among the relative changes in the neuromuscular outcomes and training variables (e.g., total work, average PT) (r = 0.68–0.75, P < 0.05). The results showed that both training types similarly improved dynamic PT, CV, RFD, and muscle thickness and quality during the early weeks of training.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS) on neuromuscular function in humans. Eight subjects (31 +/- 4 years old) performed all ambulatory activity on crutches for 6 weeks while wearing a shoe with a 10-cm sole on the right foot to unweight the left lower limb. Knee extensor (KE) torque during eccentric, concentric, and isometric actions, and electromyography (EMG) of m. vastus lateralis (m. VL), m. gastrocnemius medialis (m. GM) and m. soleus (m. SL) during isometric actions were assessed pre-ULLS, post-ULLS, and after 4 d of recovery. Average muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) of the KE was measured pre- and post-ULLS and that of the ankle extensors (AE) post-ULLS using magnetic resonance imaging. Strength of the KE of the suspended left limb was reduced (p less than 0.05) 21 and 15%, respectively, after ULLS and 4 d later. Average muscle CSA of the left KE decreased (p less than 0.05) 16%. The KE of the non-suspended right limb showed no changes in muscle CSA. Thus, average muscle CSA of the KE of the suspended limb was 17% less (p less than 0.05) than that of the non-suspended limb. Average muscle CSA of the AE, likewise, was smaller (18%, p less than 0.05) in the left than right leg after ULLS. Maximal integrated EMG of VL and overall mean power frequency of GM and SL for submaximal isometric actions were both decreased (p less than 0.05) post-ULLS.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

An increase to above-baseline levels of electromyography (EMG) mean power spectral frequency (MPF) has been observed previously during muscle recovery following fatiguing contractions and has been explained by membrane hyperpolarization due to increased activation of the Na+–K+ pump. It is hypothesized that this membrane mechanism is impaired by muscle fiber damage following eccentric exercise. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate surface EMG signal characteristics during recovery from fatigue after eccentric exercise. Ten healthy subjects performed sustained isometric knee extensions at 40% of the maximal torque (MVC) until task failure before, immediately after and 24 and 48 h after eccentric exercise. Bipolar surface EMG signals were recorded from six locations over the quadriceps during the sustained isometric contraction and during 3-s long contractions at 40% MVC separated by 1-min intervals for 15 min (recovery). Before the eccentric exercise, MPF of EMG signals increased to values above baseline during recovery from the fatiguing isometric contraction ( P <0.001), whereas immediately after and 24 and 48 h after the eccentric task, MPF was lower than baseline during the entire recovery period ( P <0.01). In conclusion, delayed-onset muscle soreness abolished the supranormal increase in EMG MPF following recovery from fatigue.  相似文献

This study examined markers of muscle damage following a repeated bout of maximal isokinetic eccentric exercise performed prior to full recovery from a previous bout. Twenty non-resistance trained volunteers were randomly assigned to a control (CON, n=10) or experimental (EXP, n=10) group. Both groups performed 36 maximal isokinetic eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors of the non-dominant arm (ECC1). The EXP group repeated the same eccentric exercise bout two days later (ECC2). Total work and peak eccentric torque were recorded during each set of ECC1 and ECC2. Isometric torque, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), flexed elbow angle and plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity were measured prior to and immediately following ECC1 and ECC2. at 24h intervals for 7 days following ECC1 and finally on day 11. In both groups, all dependent variables changed significantly during the 2 days following ECC1. A further acute post-exercise impairment in isometric torque (30 +/- 5%) and flexed elbow angle (20 +/- 4%) was observed following ECC2 (p<0.05), despite EXP subjects producing uniformly lower work and peak eccentric torque values during ECC2 (p<0.05). No other significant differences between the CON and EXP groups were observed throughout the study (p>0.05). These findings suggest that when maximal isokinetic eccentric exercise is repeated two days after experiencing of contraction-induced muscle damage, the recovery time course is not significantly altered.  相似文献

PURPOSE: This study was designed to determine whether torque decrease following an acute eccentric exercise is contraction type dependent. METHODS: Ten active males performed an exercise session consisting of five sets of ten maximal eccentric muscle actions of the elbow flexors. Before and immediately after the exercise, maximal voluntary eccentric (-60 degrees.s-1; Ecc60), isometric (0 degrees.s-1; Iso) and concentric (60 degrees.s-1; Con60 and 240 degrees.s-1; Con240) torque were measured. In order to distinguish central from peripheral factors involved in torque decrement, activation level (twitch interpolation technique), myoelectrical activity (RMS) of biceps brachii, as well as electrically evoked M-wave and peak twitch torque (Pt) were recorded. RESULTS: The eccentric exercise induced a significant torque reduction (P < 0.01), whatever the muscular contraction type [mean (SD): -22.3 (8.1)% for Ecc60; -20.8 (11.2)% for Iso; -18.5 (6.1)% for Con60 and -12.5 (8.9)% for Con240]. Relative torque decrement was however significantly less for Con240 compared with Ecc60, Iso, and Con60 (P < 0.05). Torque decreases were associated with a reduction of both M-wave amplitude (P < 0.01) and Pt (P < 0.001), probably related to an impairment of the excitation-contraction coupling. Concurrently, activation level was reduced (P < 0.01), therefore indicating the occurrence of central fatigue, as also confirmed by RMS decreases for all the conditions (P < 0.05), except Con240. DISCUSSION: An acute eccentric exercise induced a significant voluntary maximal torque reduction during eccentric, isometric, and concentric muscle actions ascribed to both peripheral and central failure of force production capacity. It can be concluded that eccentric exercise-induced torque decrease is not contraction type dependent.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate control of the vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis muscles by the central nervous system can contribute to maltracking of the patella. HYPOTHESIS: The activation timing and amplitude of the vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis muscles will be different between normal subjects and patients with patellofemoral pain. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Subjects with patellofemoral pain and asymptomatic control subjects performed maximum voluntary knee extension contractions initiated from a flexed and an extended position. The activation timing and amplitude of the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis oblique muscles were quantified from the recorded electromyographic signals. RESULTS: There were no between-group differences in activation timing. The activation amplitude of the vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis muscles of the patellofemoral pain subjects was altered to the greatest extent during eccentric contractions and differed significantly from that of control subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The activation amplitudes of the vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis muscles of subjects with patellofemoral pain are consistent with a laterally tracking patella during eccentric contractions. Clinical Relevance: The findings suggest the clinical importance of determining whether altered activation patterns are sensitive to rehabilitation, and, if so, if subjective reports of knee joint pain and function parallel changes in the activation patterns as a result of rehabilitation.  相似文献

Fatigue differences between adults and prepubertal males   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the differences in neuromuscular activation of agonist and antagonist muscles between men and prepubertal boys during a maximal isokinetic fatigue test. Ten prepubertal boys (mean +/- SD age: 10.5 +/- 0.6 years) and fourteen adults (age: 24.3 +/- 2.5 years) executed 25 consecutive maximal isokinetic knee extensions at 60 deg . s (-1). Peak torque and the electromyogram (EMG) of the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis and biceps femoris muscles were recorded. During the fatigue protocol, the prepubertal boys were able to produce higher torque than the adults, when expressed as percent of their maximal value, indicating that adults were more fatigable. The agonist activity, especially for the vastus lateralis muscle, increased in both groups during the first 10 knee extensions, and then decreased more in adults. The antagonist activity of biceps femoris muscle in adults remained constant throughout the fatigue task, whereas the children showed, on average, an increased biceps femoris antagonistic activation, especially during the first 10 and last 5 knee extensions. These results suggest that adults are more fatigable than children during a maximal isokinetic fatigue protocol, probably due to an increased inhibition or reduced facilitation of their agonist drive.  相似文献
