A longstanding and controversial issue concerns the underlying mechanisms that give rise to letter-by-letter (LBL) reading: while some researchers propose a prelexical, perceptual basis for the disorder, others postulate a postlexical, linguistic source for the problem. To examine the nature of the deficit underlying LBL reading, in three experiments, we compare the performance of seven LBL readers, matched control participants and one brain-damaged patient, OL, with no reading impairment. Experiment 1 revealed that the LBL patients were impaired, relative to the controls and to OL, on a same/different matching task using checkerboards of black and white squares. Given that the perceptual impairment extends beyond abnormalities with alphanumeric stimuli, the findings are suggestive of a more general visual processing deficit. This interpretation was confirmed in Experiments 2 (matching words and symbol strings) and 3 (visual search of letter and symbol targets), which compared the processing of linguistic and non-linguistic written stimuli, matched for visual complexity. In both experiments, the LBL patients displayed qualitatively similar effects of length and left-to-right sequential ordering on linguistic and non-linguistic stimuli. Moreover, there was a clear association between the perceptual impairments on these tasks and the slope of the reading latency function for the LBL patients. Taken together, these findings are consistent with a significant visuoperceptual impairment in LBL that adversely affects reading performance as well as performance on other non-reading tasks.  相似文献

The questions of whether chronically dyslexic adolescent suffer any deficits of simple language stimulus processing or are less left hemisphere dominant than normal reading controls were addressed. The dyslexics were chosen for clarity of their specific reading problem and were older than dyslexics previously studied with lateralizing tests. Tasks administered in Experiment I were unilateral and bilateral tachistoscopic work recognitions and a tachistoscopic recognition report-time task for single lateralized letter stimuli. Experiment II, conducted a year later, readministered these tasks with modifications, and added dichotic digits and motor reaction time-stimulus detection tasks. It was concluded that right handed, chronic dyslexics: (1) possess left hemisphere language specialization; (2) show normal interhemispheric processing delays for single letter stimuli; (3) are, unlike nondyslexis but equally poor-reading Ss, clearly impaired in their efficiency of visual and auditory processing of simple language stimuli; (4) possess clear auditory memory deficits for verbal material; and (5) may possess an additional deficit of left hemisphere visual association area function.  相似文献

Persons affected by Parkinson's disease (PD) often show an increased semantic priming effect from target words in lexical decision tasks (hyper-priming) as compared to age-matched controls. In this study, a lexical decision task was used to investigate both semantic priming (Experiment 1) and repetition priming (Experiment 2) from distractor words in PD patients and age-matched controls. With this negative priming procedure, target words in successive trials are never related, and therefore participants always have to switch between unrelated target words. Instead, it is the distractor prime word that is either related or unrelated to the subsequent target, giving the measure of priming. Results showed that PD patients demonstrated a robust effect of positive semantic priming from distractor words. Participants from the control group did not show any semantic priming effect (positive or negative) from distractors. Similarly, PD patients showed positive repetition priming from distractor words, but the control group showed significant repetition negative priming. These results support the view that the hyper-priming effect typically shown by persons with Parkinson's disease is the result of impaired inhibitory processes required to control word activation during reading.  相似文献

This study investigated the dissociation between reading aloud and lexical decision in six Italian right-brain-damaged patients with left neglect dyslexia. Patients were requested to perform two tasks: (a) reading aloud and lexical decision on monomorphemic words of different frequencies and non-words with different degrees of similarity to real words (Experiment 1); (b) reading aloud and lexical decision on morphologically complex (suffixed) derived words and morphologically complex (suffixed) non-words (Experiment 2). The patients' performance on lexical decision was compared to that of a group of matched control subjects. Patients showed left neglect dyslexia in the reading aloud task, but had a normal level of performance in the lexical decision task. Furthermore, patients were affected by the same morpho-lexical variables that influence lexical decision in normal subjects, suggesting a largely preserved morpho-lexical processing of written letter strings, as assessed by the task of lexical decision. The mechanisms underlying the preservation of lexical decision in patients with left neglect dyslexia are discussed in the light of dual route models of reading.  相似文献

The occurrences of visual hallucinations seem to be more prevalent in low light and hallucinators tend to be more prone to false positive type errors in memory tasks. Here we investigated whether the richness of stimuli does indeed affect recognition differently in hallucinating and nonhallucinating participants, and if so whether this difference extends to identifying spatial context. We compared 36 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with visual hallucinations, 32 Parkinson's patients without hallucinations, and 36 age-matched controls, on a visual memory task where color and black and white pictures were presented at different locations. Participants had to recognize the pictures among distracters along with the location of the stimulus. Findings revealed clear differences in performance between the groups. Both PD groups had impaired recognition compared to the controls, but those with hallucinations were significantly more impaired on black and white than on color stimuli. In addition, the group with hallucinations was significantly impaired compared to the other two groups on spatial memory. We suggest that not only do PD patients have poorer recognition of pictorial stimuli than controls, those who present with visual hallucinations appear to be more heavily reliant on bottom up sensory input and impaired on spatial ability.  相似文献

In the present study, we developed a new event-related potentials (ERPs) stimulator system applicable to simultaneous audio visual stimuli, and tested it clinically on healthy adults and patients with learning disabilities (LD), using Japanese language task stimuli: hiragana letters, kanji letters, and kanji letters with spoken words. (1) The origins of the P300 component were identified in these tasks. The sources in the former two tasks were located in different areas. In the simultaneous task stimuli, a combination of the two P300 sources was observed with dominance in the left posterior inferior temporal area. (2) In patients with learning disabilities, those with reading and writing disability showed low amplitudes in the left hemisphere in response to visual language task stimuli with kanji and hiragana letters, in contrast to healthy children and LD patients with arithmetic disability. (3) To evaluate the effect of methylphenidate (10 mg) on ADD, paired-associate ERPs were recorded. Methylphenidate increased the amplitude of P300.  相似文献

A previous neuroimaging study has indicated that the visual dorsal stream may contribute to accurate reading of mirror-reversed words. However, the role of the visual ventral stream in the learning of mirror reading skill remains ambiguous. In the present fMRI study, we investigated learning-related changes in brain activation in the visual ventral stream in a mirror reading task. Subjects participated in three successive runs of the mirror reading task, in each of which they were asked to read mirror-reversed words and normal words as accurately and as quickly as possible. The behavioral data for the mirror reading condition showed significant improvement in reaction time but not in performance accuracy across the three runs. The activation data showed different learning-associated patterns related to the right and left visual ventral streams. On the right side, activity related to the reading of mirror stimuli was significantly greater than that related to normal stimuli in the first run only, whereas on the left side it was greater in all runs. Additional correlation analysis between response time data and percentage signal changes only in the mirror reading condition showed significant correlation on the right visual ventral stream in the first run only, whereas that on the left visual ventral stream was found only in the third run. The dissociable response between the right and left visual ventral streams may reflect learning-related changes in reading strategy and may be critical in improving the speed of reading mirror-reversed words.  相似文献

The neural basis of procedural learning remains controversial. We further analyzed procedural learning in nondemented patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) according to the specific demands of the tasks and the severity of striatal and frontal lobe dysfunction. In the first experiment, the performance of 20 nondemented PD patients and matched normal control subjects was studied in two procedural learning tasks, rotor pursuit and mirror reading, that differ in terms of motor and cognitive involvement. A second experiment further assessed the relationship between learning in mirror reading and executive functions in a new group of 15 nondemented PD patients. In rotor pursuit, PD patients significantly progressed across the first sessions, although their asymptotic performance was inferior to that of controls. In mirror reading, both experiments showed substantial learning in PD patients considered as a group. However, subsequent analyses allowed us to distinguish PD patients without executive dysfunction, whose learning was normal, from PD patients with executive dysfunction, whose learning was severely impaired. These results confirm the involvement of striatofrontal circuits in procedural learning and indicate that the intervention of the frontal network may depend on the characteristics of the task.  相似文献

In dichotic listening, a right ear advantage for linguistic tasks reflects left hemisphere specialization, and a left ear advantage for prosodic tasks reflects right hemisphere specialization. Three experiments used a response hand manipulation with a dichotic listening task to distinguish between direct access (relative specialization) and callosal relay (absolute specialization) explanations of perceptual asymmetries for linguistic and prosodic processing. Experiment 1 found evidence for direct access in linguistic processing and callosal relay in prosodic processing. Direct access for linguistic processing was found to depend on lexical status (Experiment 2) and affective prosody (Experiment 3). Results are interpreted in terms of a dynamic model of hemispheric specialization in which right hemisphere contributions to linguistic processing emerge when stimuli are words, and when they are spoken with affective prosody.  相似文献

Hemispheric specialization for mental calculation and verbal tasks in abacus (Soroban in Japanese) experts and control subjects was tested using time-sharing tasks. In Experiment 1, the effects of auditorily presented mental calculation and news-listening tasks on sequential finger tappings were examined. The results revealed that in the mental calculation condition, abacus experts showed greater interference effects on left hand tapping, whereas control subjects showed greater interference effects on right hand tapping (as compared to left hand). In the news-listening condition, abacus experts showed no hand difference while the controls showed greater interference effects on the right hand. In Experiment 2, the effects of visually presented mental calculation and word-reading tasks on sequential finger tapping were examined. The results revealed that in the mental calculation condition, abacus experts showed a non-significant tendency towards greater interference in the left hand whereas the controls showed no hand difference. In the word-reading condition, both abacus experts and controls showed greater interference in the right hand than in the left hand. In Experiment 3, intermediate and upper-rank abacus experts performed a similar task to Experiment 1 under two instruction conditions. The results of this control experiment confirmed that a greater left hand reduction in calculation of abacus experts is not due to subject's cognitive mode but due to the amount of abacus learning experience. These data suggest that (1) learning experiences can affect the pattern of cerebral specialization through the change of approaches to perform cognitive tasks, and (2) the right hemisphere engages in mental calculation for the abacus experts whereas the left hemisphere contributes to mental calculation in ordinary people having no experience of abacus learning.  相似文献

Two studies tested the hypothesis that the right hemisphere engages in relatively coarse semantic coding that aids high-level language tasks such as joke comprehension. Scalprecorded event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were collected as healthy adults read probe words (CRAZY) preceded either by jokes or nonfunny controls ("Everyone had so much fun jumping into the swimming pool, we decided to put in a little water/platform"). Probes were related to the meaning of the jokes, but not the controls. In Experiment 1a, with central presentation, probes following jokes (related) elicited less negative ERPs 300-700 msec postonset (N400) than did probes following nonfunny controls (unrelated). This finding suggests related probes were primed by the jokes. In addition, unrelated probes elicited a larger anterior positivity 700-900 msec than did related, as irrelevant stimuli impacted control processes invoked by task demands. In Experiment 1b, probes (CRAZY) were preceded only by sentence-final words from jokes (water) or controls (platform). No ERP effects were observed in Experiment 1b, suggesting the N400 priming effect and the anterior positivity observed in Experiment 1a ref lect semantic activations at the discourse level. To assess hemispheric differences in semantic activations, in Experiment 2, ERPs were recorded as participants read probe words presented in their left and right visual fields (LVF and RVF, respectively). Probes elicited a smaller N400 component when preceded by jokes than controls. This N400 priming effect was larger with presentation to the LVF, suggesting joke-relevant information was more active in the right hemisphere. The anterior positivity was observed with RVF but not LVF presentation, suggesting an important role for the left hemisphere in controlled retrieval in language comprehension.  相似文献

BackgroundIn Parkinson's disease (PD), abnormalities of speech rate have been observed in spontaneous speech, reading tasks and syllable repetition tasks. Impaired temporal speech patterns have been contributed to dysfunctional basal ganglia circuits, but little is known about a possible differential role of right and left basal ganglia concerning speech production, although neurodegeneration in PD typically follows an asymmetrical pattern. The aim of our study was to reveal a possible influence of lateralized basal ganglia dysfunction on speech timing in PD.Patients and methods60 patients with PD (30 with predominant symptoms on the left-side PD_L and 30 with predominant symptoms on the right side PD_R) and 40 healthy controls were tested. Participants had to repeat a single syllable in a self chosen steady pace. Additionally, the participants performed a reading task in order to measure speaking rate related to connected speech.ResultsSyllable repetition showed a significant instability in both PD groups as compared to controls. However, the PD_L group performed in a much higher pace with further significant pace acceleration in the course of the syllable repetition task. This pattern showed a further correlation to axial motor symptoms. No correlations were seen between parameters of syllable repetition and the reading task.ConclusionsLateralization of basal ganglia dysfunction in PD seems to differentially impact the stability of spontaneous syllable repetition pace. Our data suggest a crucial role of the right basal ganglia in the maintenance of isochronous speech rhythms at least in patients with additional axial motor symptoms.  相似文献

Reading is a uniquely human task and therefore any sign of neuronal activation that is specific to reading is of considerable interest. One intriguing observation is that ventral occipitotemporal (vOT) activation is more strongly left lateralized for written words than other visual stimuli. This has contributed to claims that left vOT plays a special role in reading. Here, we investigated whether left lateralized vOT responses for words were the consequence of visual feature processing, visual word form selectivity, or higher level language processing. Using fMRI in 82 skilled readers, our paradigm compared activation and lateralization for words and nonlinguistic stimuli during different tasks. We found that increased left lateralization for words relative to pictures was the consequence of reduced activation in right vOT rather than increased activation in left vOT. We also found that the determinants of lateralization varied with the subregion of vOT tested. In posterior vOT, lateralization depended on the spatial frequency of the visual inputs. In anterior vOT, lateralization depended on the semantic demands of the task. In middle vOT, lateralization depended on a combination of visual expertise in the right hemisphere and semantics in the left hemisphere. These results have implications for interpreting left lateralized vOT activation during reading. Specifically, left lateralized activation in vOT does not necessarily indicate an increase in left vOT processing but is instead a consequence of decreased right vOT function. Moreover, the determinants of lateralization include both visual and semantic factors depending on the subregion tested.  相似文献

Lateral attentional bias is common after unilateral brain damage. It has sometimes been proposed that lateral bias is increased by concurrent cognitive demands, perhaps because of lost top-down compensation. However, an important limitation of previous studies is the sole use of right hemisphere patients. Here we employed a dual task paradigm to measure spatial bias on a visual task while manipulating demands of a concurrent auditory task. Bias was examined in patients with left or right parietal lesions and controls. In Experiment 1 the addition of either a non-spatial or spatial auditory task led to a rightward shift in visual bias. This same rightward shift occurred in controls, left parietals and right parietals. Experiment 2 examined whether the participant's response hand affected their bias. In addition, it attempted to distinguish between the hypothesis that modulatory effects are strongly dependent on lateralization of the concurrent task, and the hypothesis that dual tasks cause a general rightward shift. Response hand was found to have no effect on spatial bias. In addition, bias did not differ between left hemisphere (verbal) and right hemisphere (pitch) concurrent tasks, though the trend was for a smaller rightward shift with the verbal task. Our results show that dual tasks do not exacerbate patients' underlying deficits; instead they cause a global shift in attention to the right. This shift may resemble general rightward shifts that have previously been linked to reduced arousal.  相似文献

When required to perform an antisaccade task (Experiment 5), which combines reflexive and volitional modes of overt orienting, PD patients performed normally. This indicates that using a task which combines different modes of orienting creates a situation that is more than the sum of its parts. Together our study supports the thesis that it is crucial to isolate and investigate different modes of attentional control.  相似文献

Emotional processing may be abnormal in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Our aim was to explore functional anatomical correlates in the processing of aversive information in ALS patients. We examined the performance of nine non-demented ALS patients and 10 healthy controls on two functional MRI (fMRI) tasks, consisting of an emotional attribution task and a memory recognition task of unpleasant versus neutral stimuli. During the emotional decision task, subjects were asked to select one of three unpleasant or neutral words. During the memory task, subjects were asked to recognize words presented during the previous task. Controls showed, as expected, greater activation in the right middle frontal gyrus during selection of unpleasant than neutral words, and a greater activation mainly in right-sided cerebral areas during the emotional recognition task. Conversely, patients showed a general increase in activation of the left hemisphere, and reduced activation in right hemisphere in both emotional tasks. Such findings may suggest extra-motor neurodegeneration involving key circuits of emotions, mostly negative, commonly involved in FTD.  相似文献

Local cerebral glucose metabolic rate was measured using F18-DG/PET in 11 normal righthanded male volunteers performing two versions of a visual lexical decision task differing only with respect to whether the stimuli were all novel and shown only once, or whether they were all repeated many times. Each subject was also scanned in a resting state (eyes open and ears unplugged). Scalp recordings of cognitive evoked potentials in the same subjects and tasks confirmed that the effects of familiarity were present during the entire 30 min FDG uptake period. The N4 (a left temporoparietal negativity 400 ms after stimulus onset) decreased with repetition, and the P3b (a 600 ms latency parietal positivity) increased. The pattern of metabolic activation was also significantly different between the three experimental conditions. Planned comparisons of the tasks with the resting condition revealed significant relative activations of visual and motor areas. Novel words evoked significantly greater activation in the left and right anterior cingulate gyri and right hippocampal formation than did repeated words in the same task. Relative glucose metabolism in the left angular gyrus was significantly greater to novel words than to resting. Thus, two tasks equated in sensory, motor, and decision processes, but differing in the familiarity of the stimuli, evoke significantly different patterns of brain activation. The patterns observed provided evidence that recent episodic memory for words engages a system that includes the bilateral anterior cingulate gyri, the medial temporal lobe, and the left angular gyrus. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and normal controls were tested in three category learning experiments to determine if previously observed rule-based category learning impairments in PD patients were due to deficits in selective attention or working memory. In Experiment 1, optimal categorization required participants to base their decision on a single stimulus dimension and ignore irrelevant variation on another dimension, thus emphasizing selective attention processes. In Experiment 2, optimal categorization required participants to base their decision on both stimulus dimensions using a conjunction of unidimensional decisions. Thus, this task placed less emphasis on selective attention and more on working memory. In Experiment 3, optimal categorization again required participants to base their decision on both stimulus dimensions using a disjunction of two unidimensional decisions in which an additional verbal operation was needed, thereby placing even greater emphasis on working memory. Results indicated that PD patients were impaired in the unidimensional rule-based condition, but not the other two rule-based conditions. These results are consistent with previous studies that demonstrate that PD patients are impaired in learning rule-based categories when selective attention demands are greatest, whereas these patients are normal in learning rule-based tasks when working memory demands are emphasized. Overall, these findings help to delineate the conditions under which PD patients display rule-based category learning deficits.  相似文献

Two cognitive tasks (a letter memory task and a spatial memory task) designed to selectively activate the left or right hemisphere were combined with attentional probe tasks to measure how hemispheric activation affects attention to left and right hemifields. The probe task in Experiment 1 required the identification of digits in the left and right hemifield. During the letter task, male subjects identified more probes from the left hemifield than from the right. Their accuracy varied little across the two hemifields during the dots task.Experiment 2 tested whether this pattern is due to either spatial attention or interference in character processing. Instead of identifying digits, the probe task required subjects to respond to a black square that appeared in the periphery of the screen. For male subjects, the pattern was opposite of that from Experiment 1. During the letter task they responded faster to the probe in the right hemifield than in the left. Their response times were equivalent across the two hemifields during the dots task.These results indicate two separate effects of laterality in male subjects. The activation of one hemisphere produced more attention to the contralateral hemifield in Experiment 2, and the letter memory task interfered with the processing of other characters in the right visual field more than those in the left visual field in Experiment 1. Neither of these effects appeared in female subjects, corroborating earlier claims that female brains are less lateralized than male brains.  相似文献
