Background: The iodine status of the US population is considered adequate, but subpopulations remain at risk for iodine deficiency and a biomarker of individual iodine status has yet to be determined. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a 3 day titration diet, providing known quantities of iodized salt, is reflected in 24 h urinary iodine concentration (UIC), serum iodine, and thyroglobulin (Tg). Methods: A total of 10 participants (31.3 ± 4.0 years, 76.1 ± 6.3 kg) completed three, 3 day iodine titration diets (minimal iodine, US RDA, (United States Recommended Daily Allowance), and 3× RDA). The 24 h UIC, serum iodine, and Tg were measured following each diet. The 24 h UIC and an iodine-specific food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were completed at baseline. Results: UIC increased an average of 19.3 μg/L for every gram of iodized salt consumed and was different from minimal to RDA (p = 0.001) and RDA to 3× RDA diets (p = 0.04). Serum iodine was different from RDA to 3× RDA (p = 0.006) whereas Tg was not responsive to diet. Baseline UIC was associated with iodine intake from milk (r = 0.688, p = 0.028) and fish/seafood (r = 0.646, p = 0.043). Conclusion: These results suggest that 24 h UIC and serum iodine may be reflective of individual iodine status and may serve as biomarkers of iodine status.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To prevent iodine deficiency disorders, the World Health Organization, United Nations Children's Fund, and International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders established that for a given population median urinary iodine concentrations (UIC) must be 100-199 microg/L in clinically healthy subjects and 150-249 microg/L in clinically healthy pregnant women. We evaluated whether in the urban area of Rome, Italy, where a salt iodination program (30 mg/kg) was introduced since 2005, an increased demand of iodine during pregnancy is guaranteed. METHODS: During 2006, 51 pregnant women at first trimester of a physiologic gestation were consecutively enrolled on presentation to evaluate UIC in morning spot urine samples. As controls, 100 age-matched clinically healthy non-pregnant women were evaluated. RESULTS: The median UICs were 182 microg/L (range 85-340 microg/L) and 74 microg/L (range 17-243 microg/L), respectively, in the control and pregnant groups. This difference was highly significant (P < 0.001). In particular, the UIC was found to be lower than adequate in 4% of control women compared with 92% of pregnant women. This difference of occurrences was highly significant (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This observational study demonstrated that, despite the adequate supplementation of iodine intake, most pregnant women appear not to be protected against iodine deficiency. If confirmed in larger case studies, this finding claims the attention of relevant professionals to monitor iodine nutrition during gestation, assuming that ordinary supplementation of iodine intake seems to be sufficient only in non-gestational conditions.  相似文献

Urinary iodine concentrations (UICs) in the US have been reported to be stable since 1988–1994, although those in selected subgroups remained low. We aimed to investigate iodine status among adults (≥20 years) by two different criteria of assessing iodine deficiency in population. Utilizing National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2001–2012, we conducted linear logistic regressions adjusting for covariates. The prevalence of <50?μg/L UIC was higher in women than in men; increased from 11.6% (2001–2004) to 13.2% (2009–2012) at the national level and in young adults, non-Hispanic blacks (NHBs) and non-users of iodine-containing supplements (all, p?<0.05); the adjusted odds ratios (95%CI) in young adults (1.54 [1.11–2.15], =?0.0007) and NHBs (1.70 [1.15–2.52], =?0.0078). Median UICs confirm women and NHBs being in borderline iodine status. Recognizing the critical consequence of iodine deficiency particularly in women and NHBs, regular monitoring of iodine status is important for public health in the US.  相似文献

Iodine deficiency disorders are estimated to affect over 1.9 million people worldwide. Iodine deficiency is especially serious for women during pregnancy and lactation because of the negative consequences for both mother and infant. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) as a population-level indicator of iodine status among rural women farmers of reproductive age (18–45 years) in the province of Prey Veng, Cambodia. A total of 450 women provided a spot morning urine sample in 2012. Of those women, 93% (n = 420) were non-pregnant and 7% (n = 30) were pregnant at the time of collection. UIC was quantified using the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction with modifications. The median UIC of non-pregnant (139 μg/L) and pregnant women (157 μg/L) were indicative of adequate iodine status using the WHO/UNICEF/ICCIDD epidemiological criteria for both groups (median UIC between 100–199 and 150–249 μg/L, respectively). We conclude that non-pregnant and pregnant women in rural Prey Veng, Cambodia had adequate iodine status based on single spot morning urine samples collected in 2012. More research is warranted to investigate iodine status among larger and more representative populations of women in Cambodia, especially in light of recent policy changes to the national program for universal salt iodization.  相似文献

We evaluated the iodine nutritional status and related factors among school-age children based on the 2016 National Nutrition and Health Surveillance of Children and Lactating Women; 3808 children from Hebei, Guangxi, and Zhejiang province were included in the study. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), body mass index (BMI), vitamin A (VA), and vitamin D (VD) were measured. The abnormal rate of UIC and TSH were assessed. Relationships between UIC/TSH and the possible factors were analyzed. The overall median UIC was 185.14 µg/L, and the median UIC of children aged 8–10 was 164.60 µg/L. Prevalence of iodine deficiency and excess was 13.84% and 14.36%, respectively, and 12.87% of children showed TSH excess. UIC, as well as the abnormal rates of iodine deficiency (ID) and TSH, were significantly different among the three provinces. The median UICs and excess rates increased with age, reaching 211.45 µg/L and 21.35% at age of 14~, while TSH showed the opposite trend. Overweight children tended to have lower UIC and higher TSH. Higher UIC and TSH were found in VA sufficient group (p < 0.01). Further, the VD deficient group had a higher TSH compared to the sufficient group (p < 0.01). Moreover, UI and TSH distribution was obviously different among different vitamin A/D status (p < 0.05). Although the median UIC of school-age children was optimal, there were pockets of inadequate and excessive UI in the three provinces. Compared to the national IDD monitoring results in 2014, the iodine nutritional status of children was greatly improved. Considerations of region, age, BMI, VA, or VD are needed in the future iodine evaluation and surveillance.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate the iodine status of Melbourne adults in 1992–94 and 2007–08, and to assess dietary iodine intake to enable comparison with recommended Nutrient Reference Values. Method: A cross‐sectional study utilising 24‐hr urine samples collected at two time points in a random sample of the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. Two hundred and fifty seven adults (128 males, 129 females) in 1992–94, with a mean age of 56 years, and 265 adults (132 males, 133 females) in 2007–08, with a mean age of 68 years, were assessed, all being Melbourne residents. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC) was determined and daily urinary iodine excretion and daily iodine intake were assessed. Results: In 1992–94, the median UIC was 27 μg/L and 84% had UIC <50 μg/L. The median daily iodine intake was 51 μg/d, and 83% of participants had dietary iodine intakes below the Estimated Average Requirement of 100 μg/d. In 2007–08, the median UIC was 49 μg/L, 51% had UIC <50 μg/L and the median daily iodine intake was 98 μg/d, with 52% of intakes below the EAR. Conclusion: Melbourne adults were moderately iodine deficient in 1992–94, and borderline moderately deficient in 2007–08. Implications: While iodine status appears to have improved, it remains below an adequate level for much of the adult population of Victoria. Adequate monitoring is fundamental to assess whether the mandatory use of iodised salt in bread is effective in reducing iodine deficiency across all population groups.  相似文献

ObjectiveUniversal salt iodization is an effective strategy to optimize population-level iodine. At the same time as salt-lowering initiatives are encouraged globally, there is concern about compromised iodine intakes. This study investigated whether salt intakes at recommended levels resulted in a suboptimal iodine status in a country where salt is the vehicle for iodine fortification.MethodsThree 24-h urine samples were collected for the assessment of urinary sodium and one sample was taken for urinary iodine concentrations (UICs) in a convenience sample of 262 adult men and women in Cape Town, South Africa. Median UIC was compared across categories of sodium excretion equivalent to salt intakes lower than 5, 5 to 9, and greater than or equal to 9 g/d.ResultsThe median UIC was 120 μg/L (interquartile range 75.3–196.3), indicating iodine sufficiency. Less one-fourth (23.2%) of subjects had urinary sodium excretion values within the desirable range (salt <5 g/d), 50.7% had high values (5–9 g/d), and 22.8% had very high values (≥9 g/d). No association between urinary iodine and mean 3 × 24-h urinary sodium concentration was found (r = 0.087, P = 0.198) and UIC status did not differ according to urinary sodium categories (P = 0.804).ConclusionIn a country with mandatory universal salt iodization, consumers with salt intakes within the recommended range (<5 g/d) are iodine replete, and median UIC does not differ across categories of salt intake. This indicates that much of the dietary salt is provided from non-iodinated sources, presumably added to processed foods.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate iodine nutrition in adults on long-term home parenteral nutrition (HPN) and to compare it with iodine supplemented with PN, categorized as below or according to the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism guidelines (ESPEN-GL) recommendation.MethodsIodine nutrition was evaluated retrospectively in 31 stable adults on long-term HPN. We analyzed urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). A median UIC value ≥100 μg/L was considered indicative of adequate iodine intake, a value between 50 and 100 was indicative of moderate iodine deficiency, and a value <50 μg/L was indicative of overt iodine deficiency.ResultsPN iodine amount was according to ESPEN-GL in 26% of patients and lower in 19%; 55% did not receive iodine with PN. The median UIC was 63 μg/L (95% confidence interval [CI], 26–99 μg/L) in the whole group of patients, 56 μg/L (95% CI, 24–100) in the group including patients who did not receive any PN iodine supplementation and those who received PN iodine supply lower than the ESPEN-GL recommendation, and slightly higher (77 μg/L) in eight patients with PN iodine supply according to the ESPEN-GL (P = 0.42). TSH was normal in 74% of patients, increased in 23%, and reduced in 3%. Results did not change when patients with reduced glomerular filtration rate were excluded from the analysis.ConclusionsThe analyzed patients on long-term HPN had a low iodine intake as shown by low median UIC level, as did the group of patients who received PN iodine supplementation according to ESPEN-GL. A condition of subclinical hypothyroidism was observed in a small percentage of patients.  相似文献

Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormone which plays crucial roles in healthy thyroid function and lipid metabolism. However, the association between iodine status and dyslipidemia has not been well established at a population level. We aimed to test the hypothesis that the odds of dyslipidemia including elevated total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and apolipoprotein B, and lowered high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and HDL/LDL ratio are associated with urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in a population perspective. Data of 2495 US adults (≥20 years) in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2012 were used in this study. Two subgroups (i.e., UIC below vs. above the 10th percentile) were compared of dyslipidemia as defined based on NCEP ATP III guidelines. The differences between the groups were tested statistically by chi-square test, simple linear regressions, and multiple logistic regressions. Serum lipid concentrations differed significantly between two iodine status groups when sociodemographic and lifestyle covariates were controlled (all, p < 0.05). Those with the lowest decile of UIC were more likely to be at risk for elevated total cholesterol (>200 mg/dL) (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03–2.23) and elevated LDL cholesterol (>130 mg/dL) (AOR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.11–2.23) and lowered HDL/LDL ratio (<0.4) (AOR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.18–2.33), compared to those with UIC above the 10th percentile. In US adults, low UIC was associated with increased odds for dyslipidemia. Findings of the present cross-sectional study with spot urine samples highlight the significant association between UIC and serum lipids at population level, but do not substantiate a causal relationship. Further investigations are warranted to elucidate the causal relationship among iodine intakes, iodine status, and serum lipid profiles.  相似文献

Practice score was significantly different between females with UIC < 100 and > 100 μg/L (P = .001). Risk of UIC < 100 μg/L in women of childbearing age (19–45 years) after adjustment of education level, region of residence, and iodine content of salt was significantly associated with intermediate practice score (odds ratio = 2.6; 95% confidence interval, 1.3–13.2).Conclusions and ImplicationsMarginally suboptimal iodine status in women of childbearing age can be attributed to inappropriate practices, but not to knowledge and attitude.  相似文献

Aim

This study aims to assess iodine nutritional status and investigate the prevalence of thyroid nodules in children and adolescents in Ningbo city, China.

Subject and methods

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Ningbo, China, in 2011. Salt iodine, urine iodine concentration (UIC) and thyroid nodules (by ultrasonography) were measured in 329 participants aged 6–17 years.

Results

The median UIC of all participants was 167.23 μg/L. No significant differences in UICs were observed between boys and girls (Z?=??1.06, P?=?0.29), children and adolescents (Z?=??1.88, P?=?0.06), iodized salt users and noniodized salt users (Z?=??0.10, P?=?0.92). A total of 114 nodules with maximum diameters between 1.5 and 12 mm were found among 51 (15.50 %) participants, the prevalence of thyroid nodules between children and adolescents has no significant difference (χ 2?=?0.29, P?=?0.59), and there were no significant differences in age (t?=?1.56, P?=?0.12), gender (χ 2?=?0.13, P?=?0.72), type of salt (χ 2?=?0.14, P?=?0.71), family history of thyroid diseases (P?=?0.46, Fisher’s exact test) and UICs (Z?=??1.12, P?=?0.26) between the participants with thyroid nodules and those without.

Conclusion

The iodine nutrition was adequate in children and adolescents in Ningbo city, but the prevalence of thyroid nodules among children and adolescents was high.

Background

Iodine fortification programs have been applied in many iodine deficient regions. Iodine excess is also unfavourable, and it is recommended to monitor iodine status by measuring urinary iodine concentration (UIC). The number of samples needed in such monitoring depends on the variation in UIC. However, it is not known if variation in UIC differs according to iodine levels.

Aim and method

We aimed to describe the effect of an iodisation program on the individual and group-based variation in UIC in spot urine samples. Group 1 (G1, n = 16) was studied before, and group 2 (G2, n = 21) was studied after an iodine fortification program was implemented. Individual urine samples were collected monthly for one year, 13 samplings.

Results

G1s (207 samples) median (interquartile range) UIC was 50 (37–67) μg/L, and G2 (265 samples) was 98 (69–139) μg/L. Median individual coefficient of variation (CV) was 38 % in G1 and 40 % in G2 (p = 0.55), whereas the group-based CV was 50 % in G1 and 53 % in G2. No trend was seen between mean UIC and variation in UIC, neither at the individual (p = 0.36) nor at the group level (p = 0.43). Based on data from both groups, approximately 100 samples were needed to reliably estimate the UIC in a population.

Conclusion

In two groups studied before and after an iodine fortification program was implemented and with different UIC levels, variation in UIC was comparable both at the individual level and according to UIC level. When mild iodine deficiency is corrected, the number of samples needed to reliably estimate the UIC in a population is unaffected.  相似文献

Iodine is a trace micronutrient that is critical for normal thyroid function and human health. Inadequate dietary intake is associated with cognitive impairment, infertility, growth retardation and iodine deficiency disorders in affected populations. Herein, we examined the prevalence of iodine deficiency in adults (median age of 61 years) based on the analysis of 24 h urine samples collected from 800 participants in four clinical sites across Canada in the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological (PURE) study. Urinary iodide together with thiocyanate and nitrate were measured using a validated capillary electrophoresis assay. Protective/risk factors associated with iodine deficiency were identified using a binary logistic regression model, whereas daily urinary iodine concentration (24 h UIC, μg/L) and urinary iodine excretion (24 h UIE, μg/day) were compared using complementary statistical methods with covariate adjustments. Overall, our Canadian adult cohort had adequate iodine status as reflected by a median UIC of 111 μg/L with 11.9% of the population <50 μg/L categorized as having moderate to severe iodine deficiency. Iodine adequacy was also evident with a median 24 h UIE of 226 μg/day as a more robust metric of iodine status with an estimated average requirement (EAR) of 7.1% (< 95 μg/day) and a tolerable upper level (UL) of 1.8% (≥1100 μg/day) based on Canadian dietary reference intake values. Participants taking iodine supplements (OR = 0.18; p = 6.35 × 10−5), had greater 24 h urine volume (OR = 0.69; p = 4.07 × 10−4), excreted higher daily urinary sodium (OR = 0.71; p = 3.03 × 10−5), and/or were prescribed thyroxine (OR = 0.33; p = 1.20 × 10−2) had lower risk for iodine deficiency. Self-reported intake of dairy products was most strongly associated with iodine status (r = 0.24; p = 2.38 × 10−9) after excluding for iodine supplementation and T4 use. Participants residing in Quebec City (OR = 2.58; p = 1.74 × 10−4) and Vancouver (OR = 2.54; p = 3.57 × 10−4) were more susceptible to iodine deficiency than Hamilton or Ottawa. Also, greater exposure to abundant iodine uptake inhibitors from tobacco smoking and intake of specific goitrogenic foods corresponded to elevated urinary thiocyanate and nitrate, which were found for residents from Quebec City as compared to other clinical sites. Recent public health policies that advocate for salt restriction and lower dairy intake may inadvertently reduce iodine nutrition of Canadians, and further exacerbate regional variations in iodine deficiency risk.  相似文献

Purpose

Iodine deficiency affects 30% of populations worldwide. The amount of thyroglobulin (Tg) in blood increases in iodine deficiency and also in iodine excess. Tg is considered as a sensitive index of iodine status in groups of children and adults, but its usefulness for individuals is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic performance of Tg as an index of iodine status in individual adults.

Methods

Adults aged 18–40 years (n?=?151) provided five spot urine samples for the measurement of urinary iodine concentration expressed as μg/L (UIC), μg/g of creatinine (I:Cre), and μg/day (estimated UIE); the mean of the five samples was used as the reference standard. Participants also provided a blood sample for the determination of Tg, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and free thyroxine (FT4).

Results

The median of UIC, I:Cre, estimated UIE, and Tg was 72 (range 16–350) μg/L, 90 (range 33–371) μg/g, 129 (range 41–646) μg/day, and 16.4 (range 0.8–178.9) μg/L, respectively. Using Tg cut-offs of >10, >11, >13, and >15 μg/L, the sensitivity and specificity for UIC, I:Cre, and estimated UIE ranged from 52 to 79% and 20–48%, respectively, below the acceptable value of ≥80%. Furthermore, receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves for Tg using the three measurements of urinary iodine were situated close to the chance line and the area under the curve ranged from 0.49 to 0.52.

Conclusions

The results from this cross-sectional study indicate that Tg has low sensitivity and specificity to repeated measures of urinary iodine excretion. Further studies are still needed to investigate the usefulness of Tg as a biomarker of individual iodine status.

ObjectiveTo assess the iodine status and knowledge and practices related to iodine nutrition of Australian women during pregnancy.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted at a public antenatal clinic in the Illawarra region of New South Wales. One hundred thirty-nine pregnant women across all trimesters provided a spot urine sample (n = 110) and completed a short questionnaire (n = 139) in English. Iodine status was based on World Health Organization/International Committee for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders urine iodine concentration (UIC) categories.ResultsMedian UIC was 87.5 μg/L (interquartile range 62); only 14.5% of participants had an adequate UIC value ≥150 μg/L. Fifteen percent of women had very low UIC values (<50 μg/L), whereas 45.5% had values in the 50- to 99-μg/L range. Knowledge of the adverse health effects of an inadequate iodine intake was poor. Approximately half the participants were able to indicate good dietary sources of iodine, such as fish (58%) and iodized salt (51%). However, a high level of confusion regarding other foods was evident. Only a small number of participants (11%) reported that they had intentionally changed their diet to increase iodine intake during pregnancy, but 59% indicated supplement use, of which 35% contained iodine. Those who were taking supplements that contained iodine had significantly higher UIC levels (139.1 μg/L) than those who were not (90.8 μg/L, P < 0.05).ConclusionPublic health strategies, including nutritional education and supplementation, are urgently required to improve the iodine status of pregnant women. Currently, no readily accessible information on iodine is available to women attending antenatal clinics in Australia.  相似文献

The iodine status of pregnant women from different ethnic groups in an Australian population was determined by measuring urinary iodine concentration (UIC) from stored spot urine samples. Study subjects were selected from pregnant women participating in a Down Syndrome screening study at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia. In total, 263 Vietnamese, 262 Indian/Sri Lankan (ISL) and 277 Caucasian women were included. The median UIC of Caucasian women (52 microg/L) was significantly lower than that of both Vietnamese women (58 microg/L, P <0.01) and ISL women (61 microg/L, P = 0.03). The proportion of women who had a UIC below 50 microg/L was 48.4% of the Caucasian women, 38.4% of the Vietnamese women and 40.8% of the ISL women. These data are consistent with mild iodine deficiency for each of the groups of pregnant women. The evidence for mild iodine deficiency in these groups of pregnant women is consistent with recent Australian studies in pregnant and non-pregnant individuals. The association of ethnicity with iodine status is most likely due to differences in dietary behaviours. Understanding the factors that influence iodine nutrition in a multiethnic population will be important for identifying the most useful approaches to improving iodine status, evaluating different strategies and the development of appropriate monitoring programs. Action to improve iodine status in the Australian population should include consideration of ethnic differences in diet.  相似文献

Iodine deficiency is a common problem in pregnant women and may have implications for maternal and child health. Iodine supplementation during pregnancy has been recommended by several scientific societies. We undertook a cross-sectional survey to assess the efficacy of these recommendations in a European iodine-deficient region. Urinary iodine concentrations (UIC) were determined in pregnant women before (n = 203) and after (n = 136) the implementation of guidelines for iodine supplementation in pregnancy. Iodine supplementation (200 μg/day) reduced the proportion of pregnant women with severe iodine deficiency (37.4% to 18.0%, p = 0.0002). The median UIC increased from 67.6 µg/L to 106.8 µg/L but remained below the recommended target level (>150 µg/L) for pregnant women. In conclusion, iodine supplementation in pregnant women improved iodine status in this iodine-deficient region but was insufficient to achieve recommended iodine levels in pregnancy. Additional measures, such as the adjustment of the dose or timing of supplementation, or universal salt iodization, may be needed.  相似文献

Background: non-autoimmune thyroid disorder is a common finding in celiac patients, more frequent than in the general population. An impairment of iodine absorption has been hypothesized, but it has never been investigated so far. We aimed to evaluate the iodine absorption in children and adolescents with newly diagnosed celiac disease. Methods: 36 consecutive celiac patients (age 7.4 years, range 2.4–14.5 years) before starting a gluten-free diet (GFD) were enrolled. We assayed the urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in a 24-h urine sample, at baseline (T0) after 3 (T1) and 12 months (T2) of GFD. Results: UIC at T0 was 64 μg/L (IQR 45–93.25 μg/L) with an iodine deficiency rate of 77.8%. UIC was not different according to histological damage, clinical presentation (typical vs atypical); we found no correlation with the thyroid function tests and auxological parameters. UIC was not statistically different at T1 (76 μg/L) and T2 (89 μg/L) vs T0. UIC at T2 was similar between patients with positive and negative anti-transglutaminase antibodies at T2. No patients presented overt hypothyroidism during the study. Conclusions: We found that iodine absorption in celiac children is impaired compared to the general population; it increases slightly, but not significantly, during the GFD. We should regularly reinforce the need for a proper iodine intake in celiac disease patients to reduce iodine deficiency risk.  相似文献

Objective: Little is known about high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in African-American (AA) women. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the effects of HIIT and steady-state (SS) exercise on cardiometabolic risk factors in young AA women.

Design: A 16-week exercise intervention was conducted 3x/week. Twenty-seven AA women were randomized to SS (n?=?11; 32 continuous minutes of treadmill walking at 60–70% of maximum heart rate (HRmax)), or HIIT (n?=?16; 32?min of treadmill HIIT alternating 3?min at 60–70% of HRmax with 1?min at 80–90% of HRmax). Two-way repeated measures ANOVA with intention-to-treat analysis was used to identify changes between groups. Significance was accepted at P?≤?0.05.

Results: Of the 27 women who entered the study (age: 30.5?±?6.8 years; BMI: 35.1?±?5.1 kg/m2; 5274?±?1646 baseline steps/day), 14 completed the intervention. HIIT significantly decreased waist circumference (107.0?±?11.3 to 105.1?±?11.9 cm) compared to SS, which showed no change. There was a significant time effect for steps where HIIT increased steps/day (5334?±?1586 to 7604?±?1817 steps/day), and SS had no change. There were no significant changes in either group for any other measurements.

Conclusion: HIIT was more effective at reducing waist circumference and increasing daily steps/day than SS treadmill exercise over 16 weeks. Further research in a larger sample is indicated to evaluate the effects of each protocol on cardiometabolic risk factors.  相似文献
