The transplantation of tissue from one human to another has always been contentious, and transplantation of facial tissue creates an additional ethical dimension that seems to give it special status. This paper reviews the ethical debate and concludes that it is the practical limitations of the procedure that should regulate its use, and not the special status of the face.  相似文献

From the point of view of deontological ethics, privacy is a moral right that patients are entitled to and it is bound to professional confidentiality. Otherwise, the information given by patients to health professionals would not be reliable and a trustable relationship could not be established. The aim of the present study was to assess, by means of questionnaires with open and closed questions, the awareness and attitudes of 100 dentists working in the city of Andradina, São Paulo State, Brazil, with respect to professional confidentiality in dental practice. Most dentists (91.43%) reported to have instructed their assistants on professional confidentiality. However, 44.29% of the interviewees showed to act contradictorily as reported talking about the clinical cases of their patients to their friends or spouses. The great majority of professionals (98.57%) believed that it is important to have classes on Ethics and Bioethics during graduation and, when asked about their knowledge of the penalties imposed for breach of professional confidentiality, only 48.57% of them declared to be aware of it. Only 28.57% of the interviewees affirmed to have exclusive access to the files; 67.14% reported that that files were also accessed by their secretary; 1.43% answered that their spouses also had access, and 2.86% did not answer. From the results of the present survey, it could be observed that, although dentists affirmed to be aware of professional confidentiality, their attitudes did not adhere to ethical and legal requirements. This stand of health professionals has contributed to violate professional ethics and the law itself, bringing problems both to the professional and to the patient.  相似文献

On March 20th 2013, a one-hour session for Editors, Associate Editors, Publishers and others with an interest in scientific publishing was held at the IADR International Session in Seattle. Organised by Kenneth Eaton and Christopher Lynch (Chair and Secretary, respectively, of the British Dental Editors Forum), the meeting sought to bring together leading international experts in dental publishing, as well as authors, reviewers and students engaged in research. The meeting was an overwhelming success, with more than 100 attendees. A panel involving four leading dental editors led a discussion on anticipated developments in publishing dental research with much involvement and contribution from audience members.  相似文献

IntroductionOver the past twenty years, dental practice in Saudi Arabia has developed considerably, along with increase in population’s knowledge of their rights. However, there is a lack of evidence and research on dental malpractice lawsuit cases in Saudi Arabia. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and content of legal suits regarding dental malpractice in Saudi Arabia, and to explore the factors and circumstances that were associated with these cases.MethodsThis was a retrospective study on dental malpractice litigation cases between January 2017 and December 2020. Only cases with final court verdicts were included. The cases were collected from 13 Medico-Legal Committee (MLC) across Saudi Arabia while practitioners’ data were retrieved from the General Directorate of Healthcare Licensing at Ministry of Health (MOH). A designed data sheet was used, which was categorized into three main sections: plaintiff demographic data, defendant demographic, data case details in the court.ResultsDuring the four years period, 864 cases with verdicts were studied. Most of the cases were against general dental practitioners, and majority of complaints involved prosthodontic procedures followed by endodontics. The majority of the malpractice lawsuit cases (93 %) were against non-Saudi dental practitioners and 72 % were against experienced practitioners with more than ten years of experience. Almost all cases were in the private sector. Only 10 % of cases had a consent form previously provided to the patients before treatment, and most of cases lacked proper medical documentation. The mean average trial period was 3.3 months and 76 % of defendants were found guilty.ConclusionThe number of cases is rising since 2017. Good documentation, compliance to informed consent protocols and dental privileges helped practitioners to avoid being found guilty.  相似文献

Objective

Sexual harassment is unlawful in all work and educational environments in most nations of the world. The goals of this study were to describe the sexual harassment prevalence and to evaluate the experiences and attitudes of undergraduate students in one dental school in Brazil.

Material and Methods

An 18-item questionnaire was administered to 254 dental students with a completion rate of 82% (208). Students were requested to respond to questions about their background and academic level in dental school, their personal experiences with sexual harassment and their observation of someone else being sexually harassed. Bivariate statistical analyses were performed.

Results

Fifteen percent of the students reported being sexually harassed by a patient, by a relative of a patient or by a professor. Male students had 3 times higher probability of being sexually harassed than female student [OR=2.910 (1.113-7.611)]. Additionally, 25.4% of the students reported witnessing sexual harassment at the school environment. The majority of students did not feel professionally prepared to respond to unwanted sexual behaviors.

Conclusion

These findings demonstrate that sexual harassment can occur in a dental school setting. There is a need for ongoing sexual harassment education programs for students and university staff. Increased knowledge of sexual harassment during graduation can better prepare dental professionals to respond to sexual harassment during their practice.  相似文献
