Understanding the beliefs that protect individuals against suicide can help to enhance suicide prevention strategies. One measure of suicide non-acceptability is the moral objections to suicide (MOS) sub-scale of the reasons for living inventory (RFLI). This study examined the MOS and suicidal ideation of White, Black, and Hispanic individuals with mood disorders. We expected minority individuals to have stronger objections to suicide.

Method

Eight hundred and four, White (588), Black (122) and Hispanic (94) participants with DSM-IV diagnoses of MDD or bipolar disorder were administered the scale for suicide ideation, the reasons for living inventory and several measures of clinical distress.

Results

Higher suicidal ideation was modestly correlated with lower MOS scores overall (r = 0.15, p = 0.001). Among Blacks however the relationship was inverted: despite having higher suicidal ideation than Whites or Hispanics, Blacks reported the least accepting attitudes toward suicide.

Conclusion

These results suggest that attitudes regarding the acceptability of suicide may be independent of suicidal ideation.  相似文献

Study objective

Stress as a cause of disturbed sleep is often taken for granted, but the longitudinal evidence is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate new cases of poor sleep as a function of changes in reported work demands, work control, and work preoccupation.

Methods

Longitudinal study of change with measures occurring twice within a 5-year interval during a period when the prevalence of impaired sleep was increasing in Sweden. The sample of companies was taken from northern Sweden (Norrland) and included 3637 individuals from the “WOLF Norrland” longitudinal cohort, collected through company health services.

Measurement and results

During the measurement period, 16% of those studied developed new cases of impaired sleep. Logistic regressions adjusted for demographics, work environment factors, and disturbed sleep at T1 period one showed a significant increase in new cases for high work demands and high work preoccupation (OR = 1.37; Ci = 1.09-1.72 and OR = 1.80; CI = 1.42-2.28, respectively). The analysis of change in the predictors showed effects of a change from low to high work demands (OR = 1.39; Ci = 1.00-1.95) on new cases of impaired sleep. Consistent high work demands (high at both points) showed a similar increase (OR = 1.49; Ci = 1.06-2.11) but no effect was seen for reduced demands. Change in work preoccupation yielded stronger effects with OR = 2.47 (1.78-2.47) for increased work preoccupation and OR = 3.79 (2.70-5.31) for consistent high work preoccupation. Also, a reduction in work preoccupation was associated with a reduction in new cases of disturbed sleep. Control at work was not related to sleep. Stratification with respect to gender mainly led to fewer significant results (particularly for women) due to larger confidence intervals.

Conclusions

It was concluded that self-reported work preoccupation predicts subsequent impairment of sleep and that increased preoccupation is associated with new cases of impaired sleep. Similar, but weaker, results were obtained for work demands.  相似文献

Objective

The aim of the work described here was to measure the role of psychopathological features, specifically impulsivity and depression, in suicidality in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

Methods

Neuropsychiatric evaluation of 66 outpatients with TLE was performed with the following instruments: a structured clinical interview (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview Plus), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, the Hamilton Anxiety Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale.

Results

A current Axis I psychiatric diagnosis, mainly mood and anxiety disorders, was assigned to 37 subjects (56.1%) Presence of suicide risk was identified in 19 patients (28.8%), and 14 (21.2%) had attempted suicide. Frequency of seizures (P = 0.012), current major depression (P = 0.001), and motor impulsivity (P = 0.005) were associated with suicide risk on univariate analysis. Logistic regression stressed the main relevance of major depression (OR = 12.82, 95% CI = 2.58-63.76, P = 0.002) and motor impulsivity (OR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.06-1.38, P = 0.005) to suicide risk.

Conclusion

Depression has a major influence on suicidality in epilepsy. Motor impulsivity is also relevant and may be an important component of depression in TLE associated with suicide risk.  相似文献

Objective

Suicide in adolescents is a major problem worldwide. The purpose of this study was to identify differences in suicidal behaviors with respect to parental marital status.

Methods

The data used in this study were obtained from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS) of middle and high school students in 2010. Using a national representative sample, this study analyzed data from 73,238 subjects. With respect to gender, the odds ratios of suicidal behavior were calculated based on the parental marital status, living situation, and family affluence scale (FAS).

Results

After adjusting for age, achievement, sadness, and substance use, the prevalence of suicidal ideation in adolescents with a remarried parent significantly increased among boys to 1.364 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.027–1.813] and among girls to 1.511 (95% CI = 1.215–1.879). The odds ratio of suicide attempts increased to 1.808 (95% CI = 1.119–2.923) for adolescent boys and to 1.947 (95% CI = 1.609–2.356) for adolescent girls. However, having a single parent did not affect the prevalence of suicidal ideation in either gender. In girls, as family affluence decreased, the odds ratio of suicidal ideation notably increased. For girls whose families were in a low tier of the FAS, the odds ratio of both suicidal ideation and suicide attempts increased.

Conclusions

Both boys and girls were more likely to report suicidal ideation and attempts after a parent’s remarriage, whereas family affluence was inversely related to suicidal ideation and attempts in girls.  相似文献

Objective

Sleep disturbances are frequently observed in major depressive (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). This study reported sleep profiles of patients and their relatives versus controls, and examined the familiality of sleep features in mood disorder families. We also evaluated the influences of sleep disturbance on patients' quality of life (QOL), functional impairment, and suicidality.

Methods

We recruited 363 BD and 157 MDD patients, 521 first-degree relatives, and 235 healthy controls, which completed a diagnostic interview, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and QOL questionnaire. The magnitude of heritability of sleep features was calculated and familiality was evaluated by mixed regression models and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The associations between sleep problems and clinical outcomes were examined using multiple regression models.

Results

More than three-quarters of mildly-ill patients were classified as “poor sleepers”. MDD patients had significantly worse sleep quality as compared to BD patients. Moderate but significant familial aggregation was observed in subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, disturbance, daytime dysfunction, and global score (ICC = 0.10–0.21, P < .05). Significant heritability was found in sleep quality (0.45, P < .001) and sleep disturbance (0.23, P < .001). Patients with good sleep quality had better QOL and less functional impairment (P < .05) than poor sleepers. Poor sleep quality and nightmares further increased the risk for suicidal ideation (ORadj = 2.8) and suicide attempts (ORadj = 1.9–2.8).

Conclusion

Subjectively measured sleep features demonstrated significant familiality. Poor sleep quality further impaired patients' daily function and QOL, in addition to increasing the risk of suicidality, and thus requires special attention in related clinical settings.  相似文献

Objectives

Hopelessness is one of the strongest risk factors for suicidal behavior but relevant genetic studies are poorly available. Tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) is widely considered to be a good candidate for genetic association studies on depression and suicide, however, investigations on these complex, multifactorial phenotypes have resulted in conflicting data. We hypothesized that hopelessness could be a mediating phenotype between TPH2 gene, depression and suicidal behavior.

Methods

Depressive phenotype and suicidal risk were investigated of 760 individuals from general population by Zung Self Rating Depression Scale (ZDS), Beck's Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and a detailed background questionnaire. All participants' DNA samples were genotyped for 7 tag SNPs in TPH2 gene. Generalized linear models were performed for single marker association studies and p-values were corrected by Bonferroni criteria. In haplotype analyses score tests were used and permutated p-values were computed.

Results

Four SNPs of TPH2 gene showed association with hopelessness but only rs6582078 had a significant effect on the BHS scores after Bonferroni's correction; GG individuals had significantly higher BHS scores, while GT and TT had intermediate and lower BHS scores respectively (p = 0.0047). Compared with other genotypes, homozygous GG individuals also had almost three times greater estimated suicidal risk, as did carriers of the AA genotype of rs6582078 (OR = 2.87; p = 0.005) and also of rs1352250 (OR = 2.86; p = 0.006). A risk and a protective haplotype of TPH2 gene were also identified in association with hopelessness. ZDS scores have not shown any association with TPH2 gene.

Conclusions

We found that hopelessness, with its allied increased suicidal risk was strongly associated with TPH2 gene variants in multiple tests. These findings suggest that TPH2 gene confers risk for suicidal behavior while hopelessness can be a potential endophenotype for suicidal vulnerability.  相似文献

Background

Recent epidemiologic studies have found an increased risk of suicide among Veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF-OIF) with psychiatric disorders. However, little is known about whether variables other than psychiatric conditions, such as coping strategies, resilience, and social support, may be related to suicidality in this population.

Methods

A total of 167 OEF-OIF Veterans seeking behavioral or primary care services completed a survey containing measures of combat exposure, psychopathology, pain, psychological resilience, social support, and cognitive coping strategies.

Results

Thirty-six respondents (21.6%) reported contemplating suicide in the two weeks prior to completing the survey. Compared to suicide non-contemplators, suicide contemplators were older, and more likely to screen positive for depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to report a deployment-related pain condition or complaint. They also scored higher on measures of worry, self-punishment, and cognitive-behavioral avoidance strategies, and lower on measures of psychological resilience and postdeployment social support. Multivariate analysis revealed that a positive depression screen, and higher scores on measures of self-punishment and cognitive-social avoidance coping were positively associated with suicidal ideation, while higher scores on measures of psychological resilience (i.e., positive acceptance of change) were negatively related to suicidal ideation. Moderator analysis revealed that a positive screen for depression or PTSD significantly diminished the protective effect of postdeployment social support on suicidal ideation.

Conclusions

1 in 5 treatment-seeking OEF-OIF Veterans may contemplate suicide. Interventions to reduce depressive symptoms, and maladaptive cognitive-behavioral coping strategies of self-punishment and cognitive social avoidance, and to bolster psychological resilience may help mitigate suicidality in this population.  相似文献

Introduction

The difference between internalising disorders (anxious and depressive disorders) and externalising disorders (conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder) is largely accepted by clinicians and researchers. Although hyperactivity may seem linked with the externalising disorders, recent empirical research suggested it could be often comorbid with depression, and recent theoretical research suggested it could be, at least partially, founded on psychodynamic mechanisms intended to master separation anxiety. These works suggest that the internalising dimension of hyperactivity may have been underestimated in empirical research. The purpose of this paper is to assess the level of internalisation in hyperactivity.

Method

Twenty five hyperactive children were compared with children presenting anxious disorders (N = 22), depressive disorder without suicidal ideation (N = 28), with suicidal ideation (N = 20), and academic learning disorders (N = 23). All diagnoses were made according to the ICD-10 criteria, which are very similar to the DSM criteria for anxious, depressive, and academic learning disorders, but are more stringent regarding hyperkinetic disorder than the DSM criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Internalisation and externalisation were assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist (completed by one of their parents), and the presence of suicidal ideation was assessed on the basis of the Children Depression Inventory item 9.

Results

Hyperactive children exhibit more internalisation problems than those with learning disorder, but less than those with anxious and depressive disorders. Unexpectedly, depressive children with suicidal ideation presented high levels of delinquent and aggressive behaviour, equal or superior to those of the hyperactive children.

Discussion

These findings bring partial support to the psychodynamic view of hyperactivity. But they also underscore the unexpectedly high rate of externalising symptoms among depressive-suicidal children, whose pathology is theoretically regarded as a typically internalising disorder. In conclusion, these results suggest the relationship between externalisation and internalisation could be more complex than is generally assumed, and support the possibility of simultaneous presence of high levels of externalisation and internalisation in some disorders.  相似文献

Objective

The current study sought to examine the unique associations between anxiety disorders and suicidality using a large nationally representative sample and controlling for a number of established risk factors for suicide.

Method

Data from the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication were used for analyses. Lifetime diagnostic history and demographics were obtained in this survey through a structured interview. Lifetime suicidal ideation and attempts were also assessed.

Results

Multivariate analyses covarying for psychiatric comorbidity and demographic variables found social anxiety disorder (SAD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic disorder (PD) to be unique predictors of suicidal ideation, while only SAD, PTSD, and GAD were predictive of suicide attempts. Analyses by gender indicated that each of these four disorders were predictive of suicidal ideation or suicide attempts among women, while only PTSD and PD acted as risk factors among men.

Conclusions

Findings provide further evidence of the negative impact of anxiety disorders, suggest efforts should be made towards their early detection and treatment, and emphasize the importance of suicide risk assessment in treating individuals with anxiety disorders.  相似文献

Introduction

The ABCB1 C3435T polymorphism limits oral bioavailability of clopidogrel and may influence prognosis of patients treated with clopidogrel. Several studies have examined the association between the C3435T polymorphism and risk of adverse clinical events in clopidogrel treated patients, but the results were inconsistent. To assess the role of the C3435T polymorphism in the impact on clinical outcomes, a meta-analysis was conducted.

Methods

6 studies with 10,153 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. Fixed- or random-effects model was chosen according to heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated by fail-safe numbers.

Results

The association of the C3435T polymorphism with risk of overall recurrent ischemic events in clopidogrel treated patients was not statistically significant for all genetic models (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 0.78-1.64, P = 0.51; OR = 1.15, 95%CI: 0.99-1.33, P = 0.07; OR = 1.19, 95%CI: 0.81-1.76, P = 0.37). Significant association was identified between the C3435T polymorphism and risk of short-term recurrent ischemic events (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.09-2.20, P = 0.01; OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.06-1.87, P = 0.02; OR = 1.77, 95% CI: 1.19-2.63, P = 0.005). No statistically significant association between the C3435T polymorphism and stent thrombosis (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.47-1.32, P = 0.37) or bleeding (OR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.79-1.21, P = 0.82) was identified. The results may be affected by publication bias.

Conclusions

This meta-analysis failed to show an association between the ABCB1 C3435T polymorphism and risk of overall recurrent ischemic events, stent thrombosis or bleeding in clopidogrel treated patients. However, the association between TT homozygotes of the C3435T polymorphism and risk of short-term recurrent ischemic events may exist, but needs more studies to confirm.  相似文献

Objective

To investigate whether functional polymorphisms directly (HTR2A and SLC6A4 genes) or indirectly (IL-1 gene complex, APOE and ACE genes) related with serotonergic neurotransmission were associated with suicidal behavior.

Subjects and methods

227 suicide attempters, 686 non-suicidal psychiatric patients, and 420 healthy controls from a homogeneous Spanish Caucasian population were genotyped using standard methods.

Results

There were no differences in genotype frequencies between the three groups. The −1438A/G [χ2 (df) = 9.80 (2), uncorrected p = 0.007] and IL-1α −889C/T [χ2 (df) = 8.76 (2), uncorrected p = 0.013] genotype frequencies between impulsive and planned suicide attempts trended toward being different (not significant after Bonferroni correction). Suicide attempts were more often impulsive in the presence of −1438G/G or IL-1α −889C/T or C/C genotypes. There was interaction between the polymorphism 5-HTTLPR and age [LRT (df) = 6.84 (2), p = 0.033] and between the polymorphisms APOE and IL-1RA (86 bp)n [LRT (df) = 12.21 (4), p = 0.016] in relation to suicide attempt lethality.

Conclusion

These findings further evidence the complexity of the association between genetics and suicidal behavior, the need to study homogenous forms of the behavior and the relevance of impulsive and aggressive traits as endophenotypes for suicidal behavior.  相似文献

Objective

To estimate the prevalence, incidence and determinants of suicidal ideation in the multiple sclerosis (MS) population.

Methods

A sample of 188 subjects were randomly selected from a community-based MS clinic registry and participated in as many as 13 interviews over 6 months. Thoughts of “being better off dead” or of “harming oneself” were assessed using item 9 on the Patient Health Questionnaire, Brief (PHQ-9).

Results

At baseline, the 2-week period prevalence of suicidal ideation was 8.3%. Over the course of 6 months, 22.1% of respondents reported having such thoughts at least once. Survival analysis incorporating baseline PHQ-8 scores as a covariate confirmed that being age 65 and over (HR = 4.3, 95% CI 1.7–11.3) and having lower quartile self-efficacy ratings (HR = 3.5, 95% CI 1.5–8.2) predicted suicidal ideation. Lower levels of task-oriented coping (treated as a continuous variable) also predicted suicidal ideation after adjustment for depressive symptoms (p = 0.015), as did self-reported bladder or bowel symptoms (HR = 2.6, 95% CI 1.1–6.0) and difficulties with speaking and swallowing (HR = 2.9, 95% CI 1.3–6.8). Associations with MS symptoms were not confounded by depressive symptoms.

Conclusion

This study identified several potentially modifiable factors that may be useful for preventing suicide in people with MS.  相似文献

Objectives

The most important change of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V) is the use of dimensional approach to assess the severity of symptoms across different diagnosis. There are 2 purposes in this study: the first purpose was to identify the proportion of outpatients with panic disorder who have suicidal ideation. The second aim was to examine the relationships among panic, agoraphobic symptoms, and suicidal ideation in patients with panic disorder, adjusting by age, social support, and alcohol use.

Methods

Sixty patients with panic disorder were recruited from outpatient psychiatric clinics in southern Taiwan. Suicidal ideation in the preceding 2 weeks was measured. The Panic and Agoraphobic Symptoms Checklist, Social Support Scale, Questionnaire for Adverse Effects of Medication for Panic Disorder, and Social Status Rating Scale were used to understand the severity of panic and agoraphobia, social support, drug adverse effects, and social status. Significant variables from the univariate analysis were included in a forward regression model. Then, we used structural equation modeling to fit the model.

Results

We found that 31.7% of outpatients with panic disorder had had suicidal ideation in the preceding 2 weeks. Multiple regression analysis showed that younger age, current alcohol use, more severe panic symptoms, and less social support were associated with suicidal ideation. In addition, the structural equation model illustrated the recursive model from panic to agoraphobia and suicidal ideation. Agoraphobia had no association with suicidal ideation. Panic symptom was a mediator to suicidal ideation but not agoraphobic symptoms.

Conclusions

A high proportion of patients with panic disorder had suicidal ideation. We found that panic symptoms, social support, age, and alcohol use affected suicide and could be identified. The 3-level model from panic to agoraphobia revealed that panic was a predictor of agoraphobia and agoraphobia was not a predictor of panic. This verified the evolution of the diagnostic view of the DSM. Panic symptom was a mediator to suicidal ideation. With the dimensional model in DSM-V, panic symptoms can be used as a marker for greater morbidity and severity.  相似文献

Objective

Previous research has found an association between sleep problems and suicidal behavior. However, it is still unclear whether the association can be largely explained by depression. In this study, we prospectively examined relationships between sleep problems when participants were 12-14 years old and subsequent suicidal thoughts and self-harm behaviors—including suicide attempts—at ages 15-17 while controlling for depressive symptoms at baseline.

Methods

Study participants were 280 boys and 112 girls from a community sample of high-risk alcoholic families and controls in an ongoing longitudinal study.

Results

Controlling for gender, parental alcoholism and parental suicidal thoughts, and prior suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors when participants were 12-14 years old, having trouble sleeping at 12-14 significantly predicted suicidal thoughts and self-harm behaviors at ages 15-17. Depressive symptoms, nightmares, aggressive behavior, and substance-related problems at ages 12-14 were not significant predictors when other variables were in the model.

Conclusions

Having trouble sleeping was a strong predictor of subsequent suicidal thoughts and self-harm behaviors in adolescence. Sleep problems may be an early and important marker for suicidal behavior in adolescence. Parents and primary care physicians are encouraged to be vigilant and screen for sleep problems in young adolescents. Future research should determine if early intervention with sleep disturbances reduces the risk for suicidality in adolescents.  相似文献

Background

Although incidence of schizophrenia is higher among cannabis users and marijuana is the most common abused drug by adolescents, etiological linkage between schizophrenia and cannabis use is still not clarified. Clinical experiences suggest that regular cannabis user can show similar psychotic episode to schizophrenic disorders but it is still unclear if chronic cannabis use with schizophreniform disorder is a distinct entity requiring special therapy or it can be treated as classical schizophrenia. There are no data available on the comparison of pharmacotherapy between schizophreniform patients with and without cannabis use.

Methods

Clinical data of 85 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder were analyzed retrospectively. Cannabis use was not reported by 43 persons (Cnbs0 subgroup) and 42 patients used regularly cannabis during at least 1 year (Cnbs1 subgroup). Comparison of anamnesis, family history, social-demographic condition, positive and negative symptoms, acute and long-term therapies recorded by clinical interviews was performed with chi square tests, logistic binary regression and t-tests using SPSS 13.0 for Windows software.

Results

Men were over-represented in cannabis dependent group while mean age was lower among them compared to Cnbs0 subgroup. Prevalence of suicidal attempt was increased in men without cannabis use (OR = 5.25, p = 0.016). Patients without cannabis use spent more time in hospital (p = 0.026) and smoking was more frequent among them (OR = 1.36, p = 0.047). The chance to get olanzapine for acute therapy and aripiprazol for long term therapy was more than two fold in Cnbs1 subgroup (OR = 2.66, OR = 3.67, respectively). However, aripiprazol was used for acute therapy with significantly lower risk in Cnbs1 subgroup (OR = 0.47, p = 0.023). Olanzapine was administered for long term therapy in a higher dose to Cnbs0 patients (p = 0.040). Also higher dose of risperidon LAI was used in women without cannabis dependency compared to women of Cnbs1 subgroup (p = 0.020). Positive and negative symptoms and family history did not differ significantly between the two subgroups.

Conclusion

Although symptom profile was similar, hospitalization time, suicidal anamnesis, smoking habit and also dosage, intensity and lasting of therapy were different between the two subgroups. Further prospective studies are required for the investigation of the clinical and molecular background of this discrepancy in order to determine a relevant protocol of prevention and treatment of the chronic cannabis use related psychotic disorder.  相似文献

Background

The goal of this study is to examine the relationship between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and suicidal ideation and suicide attempt among adults in the United States.

Methods

Data were drawn from the National Comorbidity Study-Replication (NCS-R), a household probability sample of adults ages 18 and older in the United States.

Results

COPD is associated with significantly increased odds of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt, compared with those without COPD. The association between COPD and suicide attempt remained statistically significant after adjusting for demographics, depression, panic disorder, substance use and nicotine dependence. The association between COPD and suicidal ideation was no longer significant after adjusting for nicotine dependence.

Conclusions

Our findings provide initial evidence that there is a relationship between COPD and suicidal behavior among adults in the community. Future studies that can examine the relationship between COPD and completed suicide, as well as replication of these results, would improve our understanding of whether and to what degree COPD confers an increased vulnerability for suicide behavior.  相似文献

Objectives

Suicidal ideation is an important phase in the suicidal process, preceding suicide attempts and completed suicide. Weak social ties and low support from friends or relatives have been significantly associated with suicidal ideation. This study investigated the relationship between social support and suicidal ideation among young and middle-aged adults in Korea.

Methods

The Seoul Citizens Health and Social Indicators Survey conducted face-to-face interviews with 10,922 self-reporting adults. Questions were asked to assess suicidal ideation, and several questions focused on social support, social networks, health behaviors, and health status.

Results

The strongest association in middle-aged adults was that between suicidal ideation and lack of social support. Poor emotional support significantly influenced suicidal ideation in middle-aged men, whereas lack of instrumental support significantly affected suicidal thoughts in middle-aged women, after controlling for sociodemographic factors, health behaviors, and health status. High alcohol use, functional limitations, and stress were related to suicidal thoughts in young adults, whereas depressive feelings had the strongest association with suicidal ideation in middle-aged women.

Conclusions

Social support is a crucial independent correlate of suicidal ideation, especially in middle-aged adults in an urban community setting. This study shows that it is essential to provide gender-specific social support to prevent suicide.  相似文献

Objective

There is paucity of information on epilepsy and suicide in Nigeria. The objective of this study therefore was to assess the prevalence and determinants of suicide risk among adults with epilepsy (AWE) in Kaduna, Nigeria.

Method

We administered the suicidality module of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, the three-item Oslo Social Support Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale to 170 consecutive AWE attending the outpatient clinic of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, between January and June 2011 to determine the prevalence of suicide risk, the level of social support and the psychological symptoms, respectively. We also recorded the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the subjects.

Results

There are 99 males and 71 females. The subject’s mean age was 28.7±12.1 years. The prevalence of suicide risk was 20.0%. Short seizure-free periods (χ2= 4.658, P= .031), previous suicide attempts (χ2= 12.216, P< .001), anxiety symptoms (χ2= 5.075, P= .024) and depressive symptoms (χ2= 5.093, P= .016) were significantly associated with suicidal tendencies. However, after a logistic regression analysis, none of the above variables predicted suicide risk.

Conclusion

Suicide risk is common among AWE. Poor seizure control, previous suicidal attempts and emotional distress are associated factors.  相似文献

Objective

To compare the prevalence of suicidal ideation/attempts among Hispanic subgroups in the US in 1991-1992 and 2001-2002, and identify high-risk groups.

Method

Data were drawn from the 1991-1992 National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey (NLAES, n = 42,862) and the 2001-2002 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC, n = 43,093), two nationally representative surveys of individuals aged 18 years and older.

Results

1) Puerto Ricans are the Hispanic ethnic subgroup with the highest rates of suicide attempts; 2) 45- to 64-year-old Puerto Rican women are a high-risk group for suicide attempts; 3) Over the 10 year period between the two surveys, the lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts significantly increased among 18- to 24-year-old Puerto Rican women and Cuban men, and among 45- to 64-year-old Puerto Rican men.

Conclusion

Hispanics in the US are not a homogeneous group. We identify high-risk groups among Hispanics. Specific interventions for subgroups of Hispanics at high risk for suicidal behaviors may be required.  相似文献

Objective

To study the temporal association between growth hormone (GH) and slow wave sleep (SWS) in middle-aged women.

Methods

Seventeen premenopausal and 18 postmenopausal women were studied using all-night polygraphic sleep recordings and blood sampling at 20-min intervals. The postmenopausal women were re-studied after six months on hormone therapy (HT) according to a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled protocol.

Results

The total sleep time (premenopausal 361.9 ± 81.5 min, postmenopausal 358 ± 67.7 min) and the percentages of the sleep stages did not differ between pre- and postmenopausal women. In postmenopausal women the first GH peak after sleep onset occurred later and with a more variable time interval compared to premenopausal women. The percentage of SWS was highest 40-20 min prior to the first GH peak after sleep onset in both groups with a higher SWS proportion in premenopausal women (p = 0.048), although the total SWS percent for night did not differ. HT did not affect the distribution of SWS in postmenopausal women.

Conclusions

The temporal relationship between GH and SWS in premenopausal women is less robust after menopause and is not improved with HT.  相似文献
