Desperate times call for creative solutions. The mental health workforce shortage has created an opportunity to rethink current and future education and training needs in order to prepare competent and compassionate practitioners to meet the changing demands of consumers and their carers requiring mental heath treatment and support. This article urges consideration of an undergraduate direct entry mental health programme similar to that of midwifery or the nursing foundation/mental health branch programmes of the UK.  相似文献

Recent Australian Government policy reflects the integral nature of active consumer participation to the planning and delivery of mental health services. The effectiveness of consumer participation in improving mental health services has received some attention in the literature. Commonwealth Government funding enabled the development of a partnership between the Centre for Psychiatric Nursing Research and Practice and the Melbourne Consumer Consultants' Group. The successful application enabled the employment of a mental health consumer as an academic staff member of the Centre for Psychiatric Nursing Research and Practice. One important aspect of this role involved the mental health consumer teaching a consumer perspective to postgraduate psychiatric nursing students. The primary aim was to increase the students' awareness of and sensitivity to greater consumer participation within the mental health arena. This paper presents the results of an evaluation of the consumer academic role in teaching within the Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Clinical Nursing (Psychiatric Nursing). An evaluation form was distributed to students (n = 21) on completion of the semester. The findings suggest the experience was considered beneficial to students and was impacting significantly on their current practice. This project supports the value of consumer participation in the education of mental health professionals.  相似文献

The difficulty in attracting graduates of nursing programmes into mental health nursing (MHN) remains an ongoing challenge. Moreover, it is frequently claimed that undergraduate nursing students do not always regard MHN favourably for future employment. Although undergraduate nurses are employed as assistants in nursing (AIN) in mental health settings, there is no published research exploring their role, the career trajectory into MHN, or its effectiveness as a recruitment strategy. In this paper, we draw on the literature to delineate factors that might contribute to the desire of AIN to work in MHN. Nine factors were identified: acceptance by nurses, fitting in with the culture, managing the workload, developing a realistic appraisal of the effectiveness and limits of psychiatry, constructive learning from direct interpersonal interactions with clients, practising communication skills, being supported in a structured way, working with positive role models, and the overall quality of the employment setting. A comprehensive understanding of these factors can enhance the experience of undergraduate nursing students working as AIN, and potentially increase recruitment into MHN.  相似文献

Consumer participation in the education of health professionals is increasing, particularly in mental health nursing education and storytelling remains the most frequent approach to consumer involvement. The use of story has tended to be accepted as a legitimate educational tool with limited critique or consideration of its potential consequences presented within the academic literature. A qualitative exploratory research study was undertaken with mental health nurse academics (n = 34) and consumer educators and academics (n = 12), to investigate the perceptions and experiences of mental health nurses and consumers regarding the involvement of consumers in mental health nursing education. Data were analysed thematically. Story was a major theme to emerge from consumer participants and received some attention from nurse academics. Consumers and nurses both referred to the power of story to convey the human experience of mental illness diagnosis and service use; and the vulnerability that can result from storytelling. Consumers also described: story as expectation; preparation and support; and the politics of story. All participants supported the value of storytelling in mental health nursing education. Consumers had considered the complexities in far greater detail. The ongoing value of story as an educational technique requires further research. Equally important is considering a broader range of educational roles for mental health consumers.  相似文献

The relationship between climate change and worsening mental health is of increasing concern globally. Climate change is ubiquitous, yet marginalized populations bear a disproportionate burden of the physical and mental health impacts, while youth are more likely to report mental health concerns related to climate change than older generations. Mental health nurses will inevitably see these impacts play out in their practice, thus it is important to explore innovative tools for teaching about and responding to the emotional and psychological impacts of climate change. This perspective paper presents an educational project that utilized film and structured reflection to engage with the intersecting topics of planetary and mental health. The authors created a documentary film that presents the relationship between mental health and climate change as well as an accompanying reflective toolkit. Both the film and toolkit were integrated into an undergraduate course about the health impacts of climate change. This paper explores the relevance of climate change to mental health nursing education and practice, describes the process of creating and integrating the film and toolkit into a course and advances the position that film is an innovative way to engage individuals and communities (such as student or community groups) with the emotional and psychological concerns that arise in response to complex challenges of climate change. More research is needed to better understand the mental health impacts of climate change and to explore novel approaches to education and advocacy about this topic. We hope that sharing our project and experiences will inspire additional discussion and research related to these emerging issues that are of great relevance to mental health nursing.  相似文献

目的:探讨在新冠肺炎患者的护理中,实施强化心理健康教育的意义。方法:采取回顾性分析方法,研究对象为武汉协和医院、武汉大学人民医院2020年2月15日到3月31日收治的新型冠状病毒感染患者共120例,根据护理方法不同分组:对照组60例常规护理,研究组60例在常规护理基础上增加强化心理健康教育,对比两组护理效果。结果:研究组患者干预后的PHQ-9评分、焦虑评分低于对照组(P<0.05),研究组患者的Herth评分、各项护理依从性、总护理满意率高于对照组(P<0.05)。结论:新冠肺炎患者经强化心理教育干预,可有效改善患者的不良情绪,提高患者治疗的依从性。  相似文献

This ethnographic account of mental health nursing in a 22-bed acute inpatient facility in New South Wales, Australia, uncovered cultural meaning and cultural realities associated with the delivery of nursing care within the context of current challenges, demands, and influences brought about by service reforms. The findings demonstrate that mental health nurses have been responsive to changes brought about by the reforms. The ability of nurses to readily identify service gaps in their everyday practice provides them with the opportunity to develop strategies to respond to workplace challenges. As such, findings of the study contribute to current discussions concerning acute inpatient mental health nursing practice.  相似文献

Aim: In recent years, the mental health of workers has become a vital issue and the role of managers in occupational mental health promotion is now viewed as extremely important. In this study the training needs of managers with respect to occupational mental health were identified from the perspective of occupational health nurses, who are required to support managers in dealing with this complex problem. Methods: The subjects of the present study were 748 managers in a large public service enterprise who had taken part in training seminars on occupational mental health conducted from 2000 to 2001. In 2004 data were collected from written reports presented by occupational health nurses, which contained questions asked by the participants in the seminar. The content of 163 questions registered in the reports was coded and repeatedly classified based on the similarities between them, and five categories were eventually extracted. Results: The following categories were extracted: (i) basic knowledge of mental disorders; (ii) care for workers with mental disorders; (iii) workplace environment; (iv) mental health promotion; and (v) development of the workplace mental health management system. Conclusions: The managers targeted in this research showed great interest in promoting mental health in the workplace. It is necessary for occupational health nurses as health‐care professionals to cooperate with managers, comprehend their problems and concerns, and support them.  相似文献

Changes to the educational preparation of the nursing workforce in mental health continue to have profound effects on the availability of sufficient numbers of skilled graduates willing to work in this field. The longevity of the problem has focused attention on possible solutions. Introducing a major stream in mental health nursing in undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing programmes was proposed and supported as a potentially beneficial strategy, adopted by some Australian universities. Despite the promise invested in this strategy, systematic evaluations to determine the effectiveness or otherwise of this approach were not initiated. A qualitative exploratory study was undertaken with Australian universities, which had implemented the major stream, regarding their experiences and observed outcomes. In‐depth interviews were conducted with a mental health nurse academic from each university. The barriers to the effectiveness of the major in mental health nursing are the specific focus of this paper. Thematic data analysis revealed three main barriers: clinical placements, lack of support from other academics, and integrated curricula. These barriers substantially limited the effectiveness of this strategy – in some instances, leading to the programme's termination – and must be assertively addressed to maximize the potential of the major in mental health nursing.  相似文献

In Australia, there is a workforce shortage of nurses in the mental health sector, and it is essential that universities play a part in the recruitment of nurses to work in this area. In this article, we present a literature review of educational strategies for mental health in undergraduate nursing curricula and how these align with the recommendations of the Mental Health Nurse Education Task Force. We reviewed quantitative and qualitative research from 2005 to 2012. Twelve studies from Australia and elsewhere of different types of educational courses and strategies were included for this review. The key topics identified were in relation to a general overview of programmes outlining the content and outcomes, clinical placement strategies, involvement of consumers and mental health nurses in curriculum delivery and oversight, e‐learning strategies, and implementation of mental health majors. Finally, limitations with considering the literature as a whole were highlighted, and recommendations made for future changes and research.  相似文献

The Master Class was developed as an additional educational innovation designed to promote learning about mental health and illness and mental health nursing as a career option to 2nd‐year undergraduate nursing students. A number of students had approached the mental health nursing academics expressing two polar views on mental health. They either expressed extreme interest in mental health nursing or significant distress and concern related to studying the core 2nd‐year subject. It was considered that the Master Class could potentially provide students with additional support. It was thought the Master Class may either consolidate their interest in mental health or relieve their stress. This article presents the findings of a pre‐ and postevaluation which was employed to explore the effectiveness of the 5‐day intensive mental health Master Class programme on student's mental health learning and their understanding of the role of a mental health nurse. The findings highlighted that prior to participating in the Master Class, there was a significant sense of uncertainty associated with perceived levels of competence required within the profession of mental health nursing. This was coupled with students expressing they wanted to disengage with the profession even before they had commenced any theory or clinical experience. University teachers who prepare mental health nurses require a variety of teaching techniques to encourage students to engage with the subject matter and to prepare for unknown future problems and dilemmas that they must resolve. Mental health nursing requires the development of specific discipline knowledge, intellectual skills, such as the ability to think laterally and make ethical decisions, and personal attributes, such as maturity and tolerance, as well as practical experience in collaborative care. This article offers a number of strategies that teachers may use in their classes to promote the development of these mental health nursing skills. Other teachers might use these examples to trigger the development of their own repertoire of teaching skills for beginning mental health nurses.  相似文献

目的 了解医科大学护理系女生的心理健康状况及其影响因素。方法 采用SCL-90,RD-16和《青少年生活事件量表》对75名护理系女生和91名医疗系女 生进行评定,结果 护理系女生中存在心理问题6人(8.5%);SCL-90总均分及各因子分与常模比较均玩显性差异;医疗系女生的“精神病性”因子分显高于护理系女生,总均分和其余因子分无显性差异;护理系女生的阳性症状主要表现为人际关系敏感和精神病性症状,SCL-90总均分及各因子分与生活事件呈正相关。结论 护理系女生心理健康状况总体上和普通人群无显性差异,部分护理系女生的心理问题产生的原因可能与学生压力过大,人际关系处理不良和受惩罚有关,有必要加强护理系女生的心理健康教育服务。  相似文献
