A correlation is shown between the duodenal content of serotonin in the red-cheeked souslik and the period of hibernation. The serotonin concentration in the tissue is maximal at the beginning of the hypothermia period and minimal at the end of this period. During spontaneous awakening (winter normothermia) the necessary amount of amine is produced. A marked seasonal dynamics of the mitotic activity of duodenal epithelium is shown in hibernating red-cheek sousliks (Citellus erythrogenys). These seasonal variations are absent inSciurus carolinensis, a closely related nonhibernating species. During hibernation, the mitotic index of souslik epitheliocytes is lower than during the summer period; however, during periodic spontaneous awakenings, a considerable rise of this index takes place, due to the activation of proliferative processes. Morphofunctional examinations of the lungs of rats exposed to high-altitude conditions for 3 to 300 days revealed that systolic pulmonary hypertension observed during the entire period of study is caused by a total increase of the elastic resistance of pulmonary arteries. Adequate bloodflow in such a case is provided by intensive work of the right-ventricular myocardium against this resistance. Local destruction or electrostimulation of the hippocampus did not affect pain sensitivity thresholds in rats with intact sciatic nerve. In rats with transected sciatic nerve, local hippocampal damage accelerated the development of a pain syndrome considerably, while hippocampal electrostimulation delayed it so that 80% of the test rats did not appear to have been experiencing pain throughout the 45-day observation period. The dynamics of lipid peroxidation and of the aseptic inflammatory process is studied in rats adapted to high altitude hypoxia. A greater activity and shorter duration of the acute period of inflammation are found in these animals, while in the reparative period stimulation of the proliferative processes and slowed formation of the fibroblast capsule are noted. Peptide [D-AIa2]DSIP markedly increases the representation of NREM and REM sleep delayed by several hours from the onset of infusion and lasting after the infusion till the end of the 12-hour night period in a chamber. Peptide [D-Tyr1]DSIP increases NREM sleep during hours IV and XI of recordings. Analogs of these peptides have no noticeable effects. It is established that, during elongation of a segment of the extremity, normal regeneration of the bone tissue is attended by a slight decrease in monocyte adherence during the postoperative period and by an increase of the functional activity of lymphocytes during subsequent activation of osteogenesis. Suppression of the lymphoid apparatus is observed in the case of disturbed osteogenesis. In the first 10 days after the injection of Sovol-54 (a mixture of chlorinated biphenyls) into the breamAbramis brama, considerable alterations in the hormonal regulation of cotranport were observed for erythrocytes of this fish, along with an increase in the passive permeability of their membranes. Intravenous transplantation of human fetal tissue, notably of the liver and thymus, is used in emergency hematological states: aplastic anemia and acute leukemia. The strong manifestation of “graft-versus-host” disease proved unexpected. Fetal donor hepatic cells stimulate hemopoiesis in the recipient. In some cases true cellular chimerism has been observed, specifically when a transplant of human fetal tissue (THFT) to a fetus with prenatal pathology was performedin utero. In gene therapy attempts have been made to infuse hemopoietic stem cells intravenously or to introduce the adenosine aminase gene into leukocytes of patients with a deficiency of this enzyme. Treatment using transplantation of human fetal tissue will help solve the problem of HLA-histocompatibility and will make gene therapy more widely applicable. A mixture of fetal human brain tissue and of neural primordia of NotchDrosophila melanogaster is transplanted to the ventrolateral thalamic nucleus of patients with Parkinson's disease in stage 3–4. Two kinds of operation are performed. In the first case cryodestruction of the zone of tissue implantation is performed before transplant, and in the second case this procedure is not performed. A stable effect manifested in the disappearance of tremor and rigidity is achieved for both kinds of operation. When a transplant is performed without cryodestruction, the effect does not manifest itself until 2 months postoperation. The patients are followed up for 7–12 months postoperation. No side effects or relapses of Parkinson's disease are observed in this period. The lysosomal fraction isolated in a Percoll gradient from rat liver and heart after 30 min of the postreanimation period following a 5-min heart arrest stimulated incorporation of32P in total lysosomal protein. Addition of cAMP and protein inhibitor of cAMP-dependent protein kinase changed the rate of phosphorylation. Endogenous phosphorylation of total lysosomal protein in the postreanimation period was reduced in the heart and increased in the liver. This may be due to a change in the intracellular level of cAMP, which fell in the heart and rose in the liver. Exogenous ceruloplasmin is shown to increase the resistance of mice to influenza virus, reduce the immunodepressive effect of the virus, and improve the biochemical parameters in the acute period of experimental infection. A possible positive effect of ceruloplasmin on delayed complications of influenza is discussed.
