OBJECTIVE: We investigated the nature of the memory impairment in schizophrenia using an event-related potential (ERP). METHODS: Visual ERPs were recorded while 20 schizophrenics and 20 controls performed semantic categorization tasks with incidental word repetitions. Participants responded to occasional target words. Half of the non-target words were repeated immediately after initial presentation (lag 0) or after 5 intervening words (lag 5). RESULTS: In both groups, ERPs to words at lag 0 were more positive than those to non-repeated words, though this positive-going effect was attenuated in the schizophrenics, especially around 400-500 ms. The effect at lag 5 was smaller and shorter than that at lag 0 but was comparable between groups. Attenuation of the N400 peak occurred for word repetition at lag 0 in controls but not in schizophrenics, whereas a peak increment in the late positive component induced by word repetition at both lags was observed in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Findings indicate that patients with schizophrenia have a deficit in a brain process modulating ERP correlates of memory, when words are repeated immediately. This deficit might be related to an abnormal N400 priming effect in schizophrenia. 相似文献

Visual event-related potentials (ERP) and behavioral measures were recorded during a geometrical-figure discrimination task to examine sensory processing in 10 patients with mild dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) and 10 age-matched controls. No difference existed between the groups in P1, N1, and P2 potentials, which reflects the early stage of sensory processing, as well as in NA potential, which reflects pattern recognition. The patients showed reduced amplitude of P3 potential, retarded reaction time, and increased behavioral errors compared to controls. These findings suggest that the patients with mild DAT were intact in early sensory processing including pattern recognition but were selectively compromised in higher-level processing, including integration of information and memory matching, which may influence behavioral deviation. 相似文献

ERPs were recorded during 5 blocks of a continuous recognition memory task. In each block words were shown twice, separated by an average of 6 intervening items, and the task was to respond discriminatively on the basis of whether each word was appearing in that block for the first (first presentations) or the second (second presentations) time. In blocks 2-5, half of the words had also been shown in the immediately preceding block, and half were new to the experiment. Subjects were slower and less accurate at identifying first presentations of words that had appeared in the preceding block, as compared to first presentations of entirely new words. In the latency ranges of the N400 and late positive components, ERPs to words that had previously been presented were more positive-going than were ERPs to new words. These 'across-block' ERP repetition effects were qualitatively very similar to, and additive with, those evoked by words repeated within a block. These findings suggest that the effects of word repetition on ERPs are not dependent on an invariant mapping between repetition and response and are not a consequence of facilitated decision/response processing for repeated items. 相似文献

The effect of immediate and delayed word repetition on event-related potential in a continuous recognition task 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The dissociation of immediate and delayed word repetition was studied using a continuous recognition memory task and event-related potential (ERP). Among 240 stimulus words, 40 words were not repeated, 100 were immediately repeated and 100 were repeated after 5 intervening words. Words presented only once during the experiment were referred to as new words. Subjects responded faster and more accurately to words repeated immediately than to new words and to words repeated after a delay. In terms of ERP results, immediate repetition was associated with large P300 amplitude, early P300 latency and the absence of N400, while delayed repetition was associated with small P300 amplitude, late P300 latency and the presence of N400. N400 was elicited only to new words and to those repeated after intervening words. The general morphology of the waveforms was similar for two repetition conditions until around 310 ms after the onset of stimulus. These results indicate that distinct neural systems subserve the immediate and delayed repetition effect, and that the difference between the two emerges around 310 ms poststimulus. Immediate and delayed word repetition are considered in terms of template matching and memory searching, and are possibly mediated by the parietal and left medial temporal lobes, respectively. 相似文献

Olfactory event-related potentials in Alzheimer's disease. 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Charlie D Morgan Claire Murphy 《Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society》2002,8(6):753-763
Areas of the brain affected in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease are also areas heavily involved in the processing of olfactory information. Olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs) and auditory ERPs were recorded from the Fz, Cz, and Pz electrode sites in 12 Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and 12 age and gender matched normal controls (NC) in a single-stimulus paradigm with a 45 s inter-trial interval, using amyl acetate as the olfactory stimulus, and in a separate session a 500 Hz tone as the auditory stimulus. Odor identification (ID) was also used to assess ability to identify odors. The results indicate that (1) OERP P2 and P3 latencies were significantly longer in AD patients than normal controls; (2) olfactory ERP latency measures correlated significantly with dementia status as measured by the Dementia Rating Scale (DRS), indicating that as participants performed more poorly on the DRS, reflecting increased dementia, OERP latencies increased; (3) olfactory ERP latency measures better differentiated AD patients from normal controls than auditory ERP latency measures; (4) olfactory ERP measures alone correctly classified up to 92% of participants; (5) odor ID measures, namely the UPSIT and San Diego-Odor-ID tests also classified participants at a high rate. Combining scores for odor identification with olfactory P3 latency measures resulted in a correct classification rate of 100%. The results strongly support the use of olfactory measures in the assessment of AD. 相似文献

Event-related potentials were recorded to investigate the effects of direction on number word comparison. Participants saw a sequence of two number words, and next indicated whether the second number word denoted a quantity smaller or larger than the first number word, depending on the nature of the prompt. Faster and more accurate responses were obtained at the prompt for increasing number sequences than for decreasing number sequences. Event-related potentials to the second number word showed an enhanced positivity for increasing sequences. This confirms the view that numbers are mentally represented on a number line, with smaller numbers appearing before larger numbers. Direction of presentation should therefore be taken into consideration when designing studies on numerical processing. 相似文献

Evidence is presented for the efficacy of a new method of assessing reading comprehension using a standardized reading test that was formatted for computer presentation with simultaneous event-related brain potential (ERP) recordings. Reading comprehension abilities of 23 healthy undergraduate students were evaluated using ERPs. The results revealed a differential ERP response pattern for correct and incorrect test items. These response patterns were observed at individual participant levels. The findings provided further support for the use of ERPs in the neuropsychological assessment of patients who are difficult or impossible to assess using behavioral responses because of concomitant motoric and/or communicative limitations. 相似文献

A number of behavioral studies have suggested that syllables might play an important role in visual word recognition in some languages. We report two event-related potential (ERP) experiments using a new paradigm showing that syllabic units modulate early ERP components. In Experiment 1, words and pseudowords were presented visually and colored so that there was a match or a mismatch between the syllable boundaries and the color boundaries. The results showed color-syllable congruency effects in the time window of the P200. Lexicality modulated the N400 amplitude, but no effects of this variable were obtained at the P200 window. In Experiment 2, high- and low-frequency words and pseudowords were presented in the congruent and incongruent conditions. The results again showed congruency effects at the P200 for low-frequency words and pseudowords, but not for high-frequency words. Lexicality and lexical frequency effects showed up at the N400 component. The results suggest a dissociation between syllabic and lexical effects with important consequences for models of visual word recognition. 相似文献

Motivated by the demonstration of similarly localized adaptation of the hemodynamic response in a first (L1) and second (L2) language, this study examined event-related brain potentials (ERPs) to spoken words in L1 and L2 in 15 English-French bilinguals. We examined whether the temporal pattern of N400 adaptation due to within-language repetitions (i.e., repetition priming) was similar in L1 and L2 and whether the release from adaptation elicited by a within-language word change was similar. Furthermore, using word changes across language, we examined the phonological mismatch negativity (PMN) and N400 components to determine the kind of information activated during translation priming. In contrast to within-language repetition, we expected between-language repetition (i.e., translations) to be characterized by conceptual rather than lexical/phonological word form priming. Overall, the pattern of adaptation and release from adaptation was similar in L1 and L2, with evidence of delayed semantic analysis in L2 in the form of a later N400 effect. A change in language (L1 to L2) elicited a similar pattern of PMN and N400 activity compared to a within-language change in meaning in L1, suggesting that neither word form nor conceptual information was available on-line for the forward translation. In contrast, the presence of strong PMN but minimal N400 effects for L2-to-L1 translations suggests that conceptual but not phonological information is available on-line for backwards translation. L2 proficiency influenced the extent to which conceptual representations were activated by translations. These data are discussed in light of current models of bilingual word processing and suggest modality differences in the pattern of activation of lexical and conceptual information. 相似文献

This study examined auditory temporal resolution as indexed by gap detection using the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of the auditory event-related potential (ERP) and its magnetic counterpart (MMNm). ERPs were recorded in 10 subjects who were presented with auditory stimuli. These stimuli were presented in sequences of repetitive continuous 'standard' sinusoidal tones interspersed with infrequently occurring 'deviant' stimuli that differed from standards only in that they contained a silent gap midway in the stimulus. The gap size varied in separate stimulus blocks and was either 3, 5 or 7 ms. The stimuli were presented monaurally either to the left or the right ear. In a separate session, event-related magnetic fields (ERFs) were recorded from eight subjects using a similar paradigm but with gap sizes of 3, 7 or 11 ms and with binaural stimulation. Both ERP and ERF recordings showed that the smallest gap size (3 ms) did not elicit as large or reliable MMN or MMNm as did the larger ones. There were no differences in the laterality of the MMN as might be predicted on the basis of previous behavioural studies, but this result is likely a reflection of differences in task requirements. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that MMN and MMNm successfully index auditory temporal resolution thresholds, as measures that are independent of attention. 相似文献

The present study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the time course of visual word recognition using a masked repetition priming paradigm. Participants monitored target words for occasional animal names, and ERPs were recorded to nonanimal critical items that were full repetitions, partial repetitions, or unrelated to the immediately preceding masked prime word. The results showed a strong modulation of the N400 and three earlier ERP components (P150, N250, and the P325) that we propose reflect sequential overlapping steps in the processing of printed words. 相似文献

Recently, research has begun to examine sex differences in cognitive functions in schizophrenia and whether such sex differences reflect normal, exaggerated, or reversed sexual dimorphism. This study examined this question by using event-related potentials (ERPs). ERPs were recorded in a recognition memory task in 18 patients and 18 matched control subjects. On an early frontal component, the results show an interaction between sex and pathological condition that results in an apparent reversed sexual dimorphism. On mid-latency components, patients show no sex difference on a frontal component, but a difference on the posterior component, whereas healthy subjects show a reverse pattern. Finally, late components show sex difference in the same direction as healthy subjects. These results indicate that the influence of sex on the cognitive impairment in schizophrenia is not homogenous across the information-processing cascade. 相似文献

While perceptual-motor learning occurs normally in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, their ability to acquire the skill of reading transformed text has not been well delineated. AD patients and matched controls were timed as they read two blocks of words presented in mirror image. Control subjects displayed both skill learning and repetition priming, whereas AD patients displayed only repetition priming. Skill learning in AD patients was associated with their ability to complete verbal analogies. They displayed the expected impairment in recognition for the words from the mirror reading task. The failure of AD patients to acquire the mirror reading skill can be understood through a task analysis and may reflect an underlying deficit in abstract reasoning that precludes the development of appropriate pattern analyzing strategies needed to transform rotated text. 相似文献

An overview of highly selected cognitive aging investigations of deviance detection, episodic memory and working memory reveals two primary themes: (1) when variability in elderly samples has been assessed, it has proven useful in understanding age-related changes in cognition; and (2) there is a frontal lobe contribution to at least some age-related changes in cognition. However, there are too few ERP age-related investigations of individual differences to determine whether the changes in patterns of ERP responding can be deemed "compensatory" or "inefficient." It is suggested that, to the extent possible, future electrophysiological investigations of cognitive aging (as well as other physiological measurement techniques) include individual difference measures that will enable the determination of the implication of a given neural pattern in the genesis of a given, age-related behavioral outcome pattern. 相似文献

Crossmodal integration was studied in humans by presenting random sequences of auditory (brief noise bursts), visual (flashes), and audiovisual (simultaneous noise bursts and flashes) stimuli from a central location at irregular intervals between 600 and 800 ms. The subjects' task was to press a button to infrequent and unpredictable (P=0.15) target stimuli that could be either a more intense noise burst, a brighter flash, or a combination of the two. In accordance with previous studies, behavioral data showed that bimodal target stimuli were responded to much faster and were identified more accurately than the unimodal target stimuli. The neural basis of this crossmodal interaction was investigated by subtracting the ERPs to the auditory (A) and the visual (V) stimuli alone from the ERP to the combined audiovisual (AV) stimuli (i.e. interaction=AV-(A+V)). Using this approach, we replicated previous reports of both early (at around 40 ms) and late (after 100 ms) ERP interaction effects. However, it appears that the very early interaction effects can be largely accounted for by an anticipatory ERP that precedes both the unimodal and bimodal stimuli. In calculating the ERP interaction this slow shift is subtracted twice, resulting in an apparent shift of the opposite polarity that may be confounded with actual crossmodal interactions. 相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) on the performance of a finger tapping and word repetition dual task in order to determine working memory impairment in mTBI. Sixty-four (50 male, 14 female) right-handed cases of mTBI and 26 (18 male and 8 female) right-handed cases of orthopaedic injuries were tested within 24 hours of injury. Patients with mTBI completed fewer correct taps in 10 seconds than patients with orthopaedic injuries, and female mTBI cases repeated fewer words. The size of the dual task decrement did not vary between groups. When added to a test battery including the Rapid Screen of Concussion (RSC; Comerford, Geffen, May, Medland & Geffen, 2002) and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test, finger tapping speed accounted for 1% of between groups variance and did not improve classification rates of male participants. While the addition of tapping rate did not improve the sensitivity and specificity of the RSC and DSST to mTBI in males, univariate analysis of motor performance in females indicated that dual task performance might be diagnostic. An increase in female sample size is warranted. These results confirm the view that there is a generalized slowing of processing ability following mTBI. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effectiveness of an ERP-compatible Digit Span Backward (ERP-DB) task to determine working memory abilities in healthy participants. METHODS: Participants were administered both the standard digit span backward and ERP-DB tasks. The ERP-DB task was divided into two sections, consisting of 2, 4, 6 and 8 (Group 1) and 3, 5, and 7 (Group 2) set sizes. A set of digits was aurally presented, followed by a second set that either corresponded to the reverse order of the first set (correct condition) or had one digit in the sequence replaced by an incorrect digit (incorrect condition). RESULTS: Two posterior positive components were found to distinguish the two conditions; an earlier positive component (P200/P300) was elicited in the correct condition, whereas a comparatively robust and prolonged positive slow wave (PSW) was elicited in the incorrect condition. Furthermore, the PSW and the difference in PSW amplitude between incorrect and correct conditions (dPSW) dissipated as working memory load increased and were related to working memory capacity. CONCLUSIONS: The PSW, dPSW and P200/P300 components were found to be associated with working memory abilities and may have the potential to act as neurophysiological markers for the assessment of working memory capacity. SIGNIFICANCE: This research lends support for the utility of the ERP-DB task as a means of assessing working memory abilities, which may have implications for testing patients with expressive communication impairments. 相似文献

This study was aimed at investigating the basic mechanisms of the normal repetition priming evoked by text re-reading procedures in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients (Monti, Gabrieli, Wilson, & Reminger, 1994; Monti et al., 1997). For this purpose, we contrasted the reading facilitation elicited by previous reading or listening to a text in a sample of AD patients and a group of age-matched normal controls. Consistent with previous evidence in normal undergraduates (Levy & Kirsner, 1989), previous listening to a text decreased the successive reading time of the same text (cross-modality priming). However, the reading facilitation elicited by previous reading of the same text (within-modality priming) was significantly larger than the facilitation evoked by previous listening. Compared to normal controls, AD patients showed intact cross-modality and within-modality priming. These data are discussed in the light of alternative hypotheses regarding the basic mechanisms of impaired and spared repetition priming in degenerative demented patients. 相似文献

A two-tone-discrimination task was used to elicit the P300 component of event-related (brain) potentials (ERPs) from patients with presumed Alzheimer's dementia of mild or moderate severity, depressed patients of older age, and cognitively normal individuals. Although the average P300 latency of the Alzheimer patients was greater than that of the depressed patients, which in turn was greater than that of older aged normals, none of the group differences in latency were statistically significant. Moreover, when latency was examined on an individual basis, less than one-quarter of the Alzheimer patients had an abnormally delayed P300 for their age. Reaction times and the percentage of correct behavioral responses to the tones did distinguish the Alzheimer from the normal group; on both measures the patients' scores were significantly worse. It was concluded that the performance of a simple tone discrimination task requiring a button-press response does not sufficiently tax those cognitive functions impaired in the earlier stages of Alzheimer's dementia to result in abnormally slowed cognitive processing of the kind reflected in P300 latency. 相似文献
