Eye movements and blinks: their relationship to higher cognitive processes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Information about the timing of spontaneous eye blinks was abstracted while subjects performed a detection and identification task. We found blinks to be time-locked to saccadic eye movements involved in the identification of peripherally presented stimuli. The larger the required eye movement, the greater the likelihood of blink occurrence. Blink latencies were found to be significantly shorter for centrally, as compared to peripherally presented stimuli, and blinks were more likely to be associated with eye movement returning gaze to a central location than with movements associated with the identification of peripherally presented information. Thus, we conclude that the spontaneous or endogenous eye blink is triggered by aspects of information processing, and that blink latencies can be used as one tool for evaluating the level of complexity of such processing under a wide variety of task demands.  相似文献

Eye movements associated with eyelid closure were recorded in human subjects with search coils, embedded in self-adhering scleral annuli, in a magnetic field. In contrast to classical notions, voluntary as well as reflex blinks were consistently accompanied by transient downward and nasalward movements of both eyes with amplitudes 1-5 degrees. These eye movements had a shorter duration than the upper lid movements, and the shapes of the spatial trajectories of eye and lid movements were not similar. The trajectory of the eye movements was only modestly affected by gaze eccentricities up to 15 degrees; there was a tendency for the downward component to be enhanced by looking upward, and vice versa. Restraining of the lids of one eye in the open or closed position did not significantly alter the eye movements during (attempted) blinks. Velocity-amplitude-duration relations of the down- and upward components were similar for the same eye before and after closure and for the closed eye and the contralateral unrestrained eye. The velocity-amplitude-duration characteristics of saccades were also unaffected by prolonged closure of the lids of one eye. Prolonged, voluntary closure of the lids was followed by a slow, tonic ocular deviation, which was consistently upward in half of the subjects and consistently downward in the other half. Additional horizontal components were highly variable even within subjects. In one subject the downward deviation was converted into upward deviation when lid closure was mechanically impeded. We conclude that elevation of the eye ball (Bell's phenomenon) does not occur during short blinks and only in about half of the subjects during voluntary unrestrained prolonged lid closure. Our evidence does not support the possibility that the transient eye movements during blinks are caused primarily by a mechanical interaction between the lids and the eye (or the scleral annulus). More likely, they are a secondary effect of an active cocontraction of extraocular muscles that primarily results in retraction of the eye.  相似文献

Following the initial, sensory response to stimulus presentation, activity in many saccade-related burst neurons along the oculomotor neuraxis is observed as a gradually increasing low-frequency discharge hypothesized to encode both timing and metrics of the impending eye movement. When the activity reaches an activation threshold level, these cells discharge a high-frequency burst, inhibit the pontine omnipause neurons (OPNs) and trigger a high-velocity eye movement known as saccade. We tested whether early cessation of OPN activity, prior to when it ordinarily pauses, acts to effectively lower the threshold and prematurely trigger a movement of modified metrics and/or dynamics. Relying on the observation that OPN discharge ceases during not only saccades but also blinks, air-puffs were delivered to one eye to evoke blinks as monkeys performed standard oculomotor tasks. We observed a linear relationship between blink and saccade onsets when the blink occurred shortly after the cue to initiate the movement but before the average reaction time. Blinks that preceded and overlapped with the cue increased saccade latency. Blinks evoked during the overlap period of the delayed saccade task, when target location is known but a saccade cannot be initiated for correct performance, failed to trigger saccades prematurely. Furthermore, when saccade and blink execution coincided temporally, the peak velocity of the eye movement was attenuated, and its initial velocity was correlated with its latency. Despite the perturbations, saccade accuracy was maintained across all blink times and task types. Collectively, these results support the notion that temporal features of the low-frequency activity encode aspects of a premotor command and imply that inhibition of OPNs alone is not sufficient to trigger saccades.  相似文献

Summary In four normal human subjects we measured eye movements during full-field optokinetic stimulation (10–220 deg/s) and determined the relationship among retinal-slip velocity (drum velocity minus slow-phase eye velocity), the slow-phase velocity of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and the initial value of the slow-phase velocity of optokinetic afternystagmus (OKAN) measured in darkness. OKN and OKAN were maximum (63–84 and 11–19 deg/s, respectively) when retinal slip ranged from 30–100 deg/s. For higher values of retinal slip, OKN and OKAN fell (in 3 subjects) or reached a plateau (in the fourth). The amplitude of OKAN in human beings was much less than that reported in monkeys. The shape, however, of the curve relating retinal slip to the amplitude of OKAN was similar to that of monkeys. Furthermore, in both cases the curve resembles that obtained by plotting the results of experimental recordings of neural discharge in the nucleus of the optic tract as a function of retinal slip. These results imply that the processing of visual information for generation of OKAN is similar in monkeys and human beings but that the gain of the system is much less in human beings. We also found that fixation of a small target during optokinetic stimulation nearly completely prevented the development of OKAN while fixation of a small target for short periods after optokinetic stimulation did not alter the pattern of decay of OKAN. Thus, fixation may actively prevent the coupling of visual information into the velocity-storage mechanism.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Breast-feeding is suggested to be associated with overweight or asthma in children. Overweight and asthma may share common environmental influences of which breast-feeding may be one. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated whether short duration of exclusive breast-feeding and subsequent overweight were associated with asthma. METHODS: A nested case-control study included 246 children with pediatric allergist-diagnosed asthma and 477 controls without asthma at age 8 to 10 years. Information on exclusive breast-feeding was obtained from questionnaire data. Overweight at 8 to 10 years of age was defined as body mass index >/=85th percentile of age and sex-specific growth charts. The association between asthma and exclusive breast-feeding <12 weeks plus overweight, adjusted for sex, parental asthma, aboriginal origin, passive smoking at birth, residence location, and family income, was determined in logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: Exclusive breast-feeding <12 weeks was closely associated with overweight at age 8 to 10 years (P < .001). Exclusive breast-feeding <12 weeks plus overweight was significantly associated with asthma (adjusted OR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.11-2.95; P = .018). This association appeared to be strong in children whose mothers had asthma (adjusted OR, 3.93; 95% CI, 1.17-13.2) and also in boys (adjusted OR, 2.22; 95% CI, 1.14-4.34). Asthma was not associated with either exclusive breast-feeding <12 weeks or overweight in the absence of the other. CONCLUSION: Short duration of exclusive breast-feeding and subsequent overweight are associated with asthma in susceptible children, suggesting a common pathway. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: This finding adds to the importance of promoting prolonged breast-feeding for the prevention of overweight and asthma.  相似文献

It is important to have a simple. accurate method for recording eye movements. Of the two popular approaches commonly adopted, electro-oculography (EOG) and infrared oculography (IROG), IROG is often accepted as the more accurate, and it is the method that is currently used most frequently to examine eye movements in schizophrenia. This study investigated whether the misclassification of blinks as saccades affects saccade rates when the presence of a blink is determined using only IROG recordings of eye position. Both vertical electro-oculography (VEOG), which can be used to objectively identify blinks, and IROG were recorded while 17 schizophrenia patients and 19 healthy controls were presented with sinusoidal stimuli. Of the blinks identified with the VEOG for the total group of participants, a substantial number (37%) were misclassified as catch-up and anticipatory saccades when only the IROG was used. Furthermore, in the schizophrenia group, but not in the healthy control group, the use of the IROG led to a significant misclassification of blinks as anticipatory saccades. Therefore, when IROG alone is used to identify blinks, the misclassification of blinks as saccades is likely to introduce measurement error into estimates of saccade rates, particularly estimates of anticipatory saccade rates in schizophrenia patients.  相似文献

Blinks are known to change the kinematic properties of horizontal saccades, probably by influencing the saccadic premotor circuit. The neuronal basis of this effect could be explained by changes in the activity of omnipause neurons in the nucleus raphe interpositus or in the saccade-related burst neurons of the superior colliculus. Omnipause neurons cease discharge during both saccades and vergence movements. Because eyelid blinks can influence both sets of neurons, we hypothesized that blinks would influence the kinematic parameters of saccades in all directions, vergence, and saccade-vergence interactions. To test this hypothesis, we investigated binocular eye and lid movements in five normal healthy subjects with the magnetic search coil technique. The subjects performed conjugate horizontal and vertical saccades from gaze straight ahead to targets at 20 degrees up, down, right, or left while either attempting not to blink or voluntarily blinking. While following the same blink instruction, subjects made horizontal vergence eye movements of 7 degrees and combined saccade-vergence movements with a version amplitude of 20 degrees. The movements were performed back and forth from two targets simultaneously presented nearby (38 cm) and more distant (145 cm). Small vertical saccades accompanied most vergence movements. These results show that blinks change the kinematics (saccade duration, peak velocity, peak acceleration, peak deceleration) of not only horizontal but also of vertical saccades, of horizontal vergence eye movements, and of combined saccade-vergence eye movements. Peak velocity, acceleration, and deceleration of eye movements were decreased on the average by 30%, and their duration increased by 43% on the average when they were accompanied by blinks. The blink effect was time dependent with respect to saccade and vergence onset: the greatest effect occurred 100 ms prior to saccade onset, whereas there was no effect when the blink started after saccade onset. The effects of blinks on saccades and vergence, which are tightly coupled to latency, support the hypothesis that blinks cause profound spatiotemporal perturbations of the eye movements by interfering with the normal saccade/vergence premotor circuits. However, the measured effect may to a certain degree but not exclusively be explained by mechanical interference.  相似文献

Available studies are consistent with the possibility that oxygen radicals endogenously produced by mitochondria are causally involved in the determination of the rate of aging in homeothermic vertebrates. Oxidative damage to tissue macromolecules seems to increase during aging. The rate of mitochondrial oxygen radical generation of post-mitotic tissues is negatively correlated with animal longevity. In agreement with this, long-lived animals show lower levels of oxidative damage in their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) than short-lived ones, whereas this does not occur in nuclear DNA (nDNA). Caloric restriction, which decreases the rate of aging, also decreases mitochondrial oxygen radical generation and oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA. This decrease in free radical generation occurs in complex I and is due to a decrease in the degree of electronic reduction of the complex I free radical generator, similarly to what has been described in various cases in long-lived animals. These results suggest that similar mechanisms have been used to extend longevity through decreases in oxidative stress in caloric restriction and during the evolution of species with different longevities.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that reduction in information processing speed could serve as the primary factor underlying age‐related cognitive changes in a group of 55‐to 77‐year‐old adults. Information processing speed was measured using the P300 latency of auditory evoked potentials. Cognitive performance was measured using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and the Benton Facial Recognition Test (BFRT), which were chosen on the basis of their demonstrated relationship to frontal versus more posterior neural systems, respectively. P300 latency made a significant contribution to the prediction of complex‐pattern‐matching ability (BFRT), but it did not contribute any unique variance to the prediction of cognitive flexibility (WCST). On the other hand, estimates of cardiovascular health accounted for 28% of unique variance in the WCST, but virtually no unique variance on the BFRT. These data are incompatible with a single‐factor model of age‐related cognitive decline.  相似文献

In its original formulation, Listing's law referred only to eye positions during steady fixation. In recent years, however, several studies have suggested that Listing's law can be extended to the movements of the eyes, including during saccades and smooth pursuit. A major problem in deciding whether or not Listing's law is obeyed during eye movements is the influence of any spontaneous fluctuations in torsional eye position. To try to settle this question, the three-dimensional position of the eyes (around the three axes: horizontal, vertical, and torsional) was recorded with dual search coils in five normal subjects during fixations, 20° saccades, blinks, and 20° pursuit movements with a 20°/s stimulus velocity. Eye movements across a wide range of horizontal positions were measured at different elevations of gaze during 11 min. Variability (as reflected in the standard deviation of torsional eye position) was used as a measure of the validity of Listing's law. After linear detrending single trials, each lasting 21.5 s, to remove the effects of drift over minutes, the reduction in the standard deviation of torsional position in tertiary eye positions was 54% assuming a planar and 58% assuming a second-order curved Listing's surface. We attributed this long-term fluctuation of the torsional signal to slippage of the coil on the eye. The remaining variability was mainly due to short-term fluctuation of eye torsion over seconds. The impact of hysteresis, associated with consecutive centrifugal-centripetal horizontal movements, on the variability of torsional eye position appeared negligible. Peak increases in the standard deviation from the fixation baseline after fitting individual Listing's planes for each trial were 348% during blinks, 141% during saccades, and 72% during pursuit movements (median value of five subjects). In conclusion, Listing's law during blinks, saccades, and pursuit is less valid than during fixations, which raises doubts about the existence of an internal Listing's law operator for eye movements. Possibly, central eye velocity commands do not comply with Listing's law.  相似文献

The Strange Situation was used to assess infant-mother attachment at 12 months and a revised and adapted Hebrew version of the Social Information Processing Interview (Dodge & Price, 1994) was used to measure social information processing in middle childhood (at 7.5 years). Findings revealed that with regard to both peer-group relationships and mother-child relationships, secure children demonstrated more competent social information processing than insecure-ambivalent children in one out of four social information processing stages. The major characteristic distinguishing secure from insecure-ambivalent children's social information processing was their level of expectations from others: secure children expected others to be emotionally and instrumentally available to them (but in the case of peers — only if their own behavior was socially acceptable), whereas ambivalent children did not expect others to be available to them in both peer-group and mother-child circumstances.  相似文献

A reflex blink typically inhibits subsequent blinks. In this study, we investigated whether the nature and time course of this inhibition vary when different combinations of blink-evoking stimuli are used. We used the paired stimulus paradigm, in which two blink-evoking stimuli — a conditioning stimulus followed by a test stimulus — are presented with a variety of interstimulus intervals, to examine the interactions between blinks evoked by trigeminal and acoustic stimuli in rats and humans. In addition, we studied the effect of a blink-evoking trigeminal stimulus on subsequent gaze-evoked blinks in humans. The results revealed that long-lasting inhibition occurred when the conditioning and test stimuli were within the same modality. A shorter period of inhibition followed by facilitation occurred when the stimuli were in different modalities. The data demonstrate that a blink-evoking stimulus initiates a lengthy period of inhibition in its own sensory pathway and a shorter period of inhibition in the reticular formation and/or in blink motoneurons. In addition, the results show that the blink-evoking stimulus also initiates a facilitatory process. Thus, the magnitude of a blink reflects a balance between inhibitory and facilitatory processes.  相似文献

This study of 31 college students employed the startle eye-blink modification (SEM) technique to index both early and later stages of attentional processing during a memory-load version of the Continuous Performance Test (CPT). Participants viewed a series of digits and pressed a button after the digit 7 of each 3-7 sequence. A startling noise burst was presented either 120 or 1,200 ms following three preselected prepulses: target (3), nontarget (non-3 and non-7 digits), or target plus distractor (3 and simultaneous tone distractor). Greater startle inhibition occurred 120 ms following target and target-plus-distractor prepulses compared with nontargets, indicating early selective attention. No difference was observed between SEM during target and target-plus-distractor prepulses, suggesting the distractor was effectively ignored. At 1,200 ms, the three prepulse types produced nondifferential inhibition, suggesting that modality-specific selective attention occurs in anticipation of the presentation of the next CPT prepulse. These findings indicate that SEM distinguishes between different early selective attention and later anticipatory attention subprocesses underlying the CPT.  相似文献

Some years ago, we proposed, along with others, that the isomorphism between models of information processing by stages and the organization of neural pathways connecting functionally specialized neuronal networks was a guideline for conducting experiments in which the integration of methods and concepts of cognitive psychology and of neurophysiology was a promising approach to increase our knowledge of the processes responsible for motor control. At a time when models of serially organized information processing stages are being increasingly challenged, the deciphering of the underlying brain processes increasingly suggests that current views about the linkage between neural structures and behavioural functions must be reconsidered. First, at the "molar" level, the notion of a functional specialization of neuronal networks as, for example, being "sensory", "sensorimotor" or "motor", has to be viewed as a quantitative and not as a qualitative concept. Second, at the "molecular" level, the notion of a clear-cut functional differentiation between neuronal units, or between small sets of neurons, must similarly be revised: a neuron may be more or less "sensory" or "motor" and, moreover, may share both these functional properties to varying degrees. When the brain processes responsible for movement control are reconsidered in the light of these two concepts--that is a functional heterogeneity of structurally defined neuronal networks, as well as a continuum in functional specification of isolated neuronal units--data collected by using single-cell recording of neuronal activity fit well into the model of a continuous flow of information processing: neural pathways from the cortical parietal association areas to the corticospinal apparatus appear as a privileged sensorimotor information stream along which the amount of neuronal activity responsible for movement planning progressively decreases, while the amount of neuronal activity involved in movement execution progressively increases.  相似文献

ObjectivePast research suggests a large number of adults feel overwhelmed by the amount of cancer information – a phenomenon labeled cancer information overload (CIO). The current study examines whether CIO is discriminant from other negative message perceptions (reactance, information avoidance) and related to sun safe behaviors.MethodsU.S. adults (N = 2,219) completed survey questions assessing CIO, dispositional reactance, defensive/information avoidance, sun safe behavior, and knowledge.ResultsThe results demonstrated that CIO was discriminant from dispositional reactance, information avoidance, and defensive avoidance, and individuals with higher overload were more likely to tan, less likely to have an annual checkup with a healthcare provider, and less knowledgeable about sun safe protection. Unexpectedly, individuals with higher CIO were more likely to wear wide-brimmed hats.ConclusionCIO is distinct from reactance and avoidance, and related to performance/knowledge of sun safe behaviors, and receiving annual healthcare checkups.Practice ImplicationsThe correlation between CIO and sun safe behavior differs by behavior; a pattern which suggests practitioners might benefit from adapting their communication strategy based on the target population and behavior.  相似文献
