A 47-year-old man developed subcutaneous emphysema of the right side of his face during a dental cleaning procedure by the dentist.

A 35-year-old woman presented with extensive subcutaneous emphysema caused by trapping of air by valve-like wound edges after a minor trauma of her right olecranon.

In a 70-year-old woman, in whom ochronosis (alkaptonuria) was diagnosed at the age of 54, bluish discolouration of the cartilage of the ears was observed.

A 33-year-old woman was examined for a non-tender mass in the neck. Imaging findings were consistent with paraganglioma. The diagnosis was confirmed at surgery.

A premature neonate was born with a generalized eruption of vesicles, within a day developing into an erythrodermia, with bullae and widespread desquamation, due to congenital cutaneous candidiasis.

During chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukaemia a 30-year-old man developed skin lesions. Cultures from these lesions and of blood showed growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The diagnosis was: ecthyma gangraenosum. Treatment with antibiotics and normalization of the granulocytes resulted in a complete recovery of the patient.

A 23-year-old woman suffered from vaginal bleeding during pregnancy caused by a mola hydratidosa.

In a five-year-old girl with photosensitivity (burning skin sensation after a sun bath) and purpura on the nose and the sides of the fingers erythropoietic protoporphyria was diagnosed, an autosomal dominant disease.

In an 8-year-old Somali girl who had been in the Netherlands for 3 years and who was suffering from cough for 2 months, tuberculosis of the lung was diagnosed.

A 34-year-old woman suffered from progressive abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Laparotomy revealed colonic perforation due to amebic colitis.

In an 8-year old negroid girl vaginal bleeding was caused by urethral prolapse.

A 79-year-old man had a tumor at the left wrist, caused by posttraumatic arthrosis of the carpalia.

In a 67-year-old woman with recurrent vomiting the gastric folds did not disappear after air insufflation. Linitis plastica was diagnosed and stomach resection was carried out.     

Diagnostic image (16). Sweet's syndrome

In a 68-year-old man suffering from painful erythematous infiltrated nodules and plaques on the face, the neck and the hands Sweet's syndrome was diagnosed. Histopathological examination showed the typical massive dermal infiltration by neutrophylic granulocytes, without vasculitis. He was successfully treated with oral corticosteroids.

A 65-year old man had gout and a secondary infection of a tophus with Pseudomonas at the metatarsophalangeal joint of the right first toe.

In a 62-year-old woman with aspecific symptoms in the lower abdomen a lithopaedion was diagnosed mimicking an ovarian tumour.

A 48-year-old man had high fever and paralysis of the left leg, caused by an infectious endocarditis from which Staphylococcus aureus was cultured.
