This study investigates the effects of two waste materials from construction and industry, namely recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and Type C fly ash, on the overall performance of a special type of pavement surface mixture, porous asphalt mixture. Mixtures of different combinations of RCA (for partial aggregate replacement) and fly ash (for filler replacement) were prepared in the laboratory and tested for a variety of pavement surface performance parameters, including air-void content, permeability, Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, moisture susceptibility, Cantabro loss, macrotexture, and sound absorption. The analysis of the results showed that incorporating RCA or fly ash in a porous asphalt mixture slightly reduced the air-void content, permeability, and surface macrotexture of the mixture. A 10% replacement of granite aggregates with RCA in the porous asphalt mixtures led to a reduction in mixture stability, indirect tensile strength, resistance to raveling, and sound absorption. The further substitution of mineral filler with fly ash in the mixture, however, helped to offset the negative impact of RCA and brought the mechanical properties of the mixture with 10% RCA to levels comparable to those of the control mixture.  相似文献

Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is a sort of green, low carbon, environmental protection building material, its application is of great significance to the low carbonization of the construction industry. The performance and strength of RAC are much lower than natural aggregate concrete (NAC), which are the key factors restricting its application. Class F fly ash is a cementitious material that is considered environmentally hazardous. In this paper, appropriate water-binder (w/b) ratios were found through a mortar expansion test at first. The compressive strength of recycled mortar incorporated with class F fly ash was further studied. On this basis, the mechanical properties of nine groups of fully recycled aggregate concrete (FRAC) with a w/b ratio of 0.3, 0.35, and 0.4, and fly ash replacement ratios of 0, 20%, and 40%, were studied. The influence of the w/b ratio and fly ash replacement ratio on mechanical properties was analyzed and compared with previous research results. In addition, the conversion formulas between the splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and compressive strength of FRAC were fitted and established. The research results have a certain guiding significance for the mixture design of FRAC and further application of class F fly ash.  相似文献

The feasibility of partially replacing pulverized fly ash (PFA) with municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) to produce ambient-cured geopolymers was investigated. The influence of mixture design parameters on the compressive strength of geopolymer paste was studied. The investigated parameters included MSWIFA dosage, the ratio of sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide (SS/SH), the ratio of liquid to solid (L/S) alkaline activator, and the ratio of SH molar. A water immersion method was selected as a pretreatment process for MSWIFA, leading to effectively maintaining the volume stability of the MSWIFA/PFA geopolymer. The mixture of 30% treated MSWIFA and 70% PFA with 12 M SS, 0.5 L/S ratio, and 3.0 SS/SH ratio produced the highest three-day compressive strength (4.9 MPa). Based on the optimal paste mixture, category four masonry mortars (according to JGJT98-2011) were prepared to replace various ratios of natural sand with fine recycling glasses. Up to a 30% replacement ratio, the properties of the mortars complied with the limits established by JGJT98-2011. The twenty-eight-day leaching rate of mortars containing 30% MSWIFA was lower than the limits proposed by GB5085.3-2007. Microstructural analysis indicated that the main reaction product was a combination of calcium silicate hydrate gel and aluminosilicate gel.  相似文献

A new technology was recently developed for municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash stabilization, based on the employment of all waste and byproduct materials. In particular, the proposed method is based on the use of amorphous silica contained in rice husk ash (RHA), an agricultural byproduct material (COSMOS-RICE project). The obtained final inert can be applied in several applications to produce “green composites”. In this work, for the first time, a process for pre-treatment of rice husk, before its use in the stabilization of heavy metals, based on the employment of Instant Pressure Drop technology (DIC) was tested. The aim of this work is to verify the influence of the pre-treatment on the efficiency on heavy metals stabilization in the COSMOS-RICE technology. DIC technique is based on a thermomechanical effect induced by an abrupt transition from high steam pressure to a vacuum, to produce changes in the material. Two different DIC pre-treatments were selected and thermal annealing at different temperatures were performed on rice husk. The resulting RHAs were employed to obtain COSMOS-RICE samples, and the stabilization procedure was tested on the MSWI fly ash. In the frame of this work, some thermal treatments were also realized in O2-limiting conditions, to test the effect of charcoal obtained from RHA on the stabilization procedure. The results of this work show that the application of DIC technology into existing treatment cycles of some waste materials should be investigated in more details to offer the possibility to stabilize and reuse waste.  相似文献

In this work, three samples of municipal solid waste incinerators fly ash (MSWI-FA) have been stabilized in systems containing coal fly ash to create geopolymers through a polycondensation reaction. Monolithic products have been obtained with both MSWI fly ash as received and after the partial removal of chloride and sulfate by water washing. The polycondensation products have been characterized qualitatively by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy and quantitatively, through the determination of the volume of reacted water and silicate. Furthermore, the heavy metals and chloride releases together with the physico-mechanical properties have been evaluated on the hardened products. In conclusion, considering the technological and environmental performances of the obtained geopolymers, they could be suitable for many non-structural applications, such as backfilling of abandoned quarries, decorative materials or brick fireplaces, hearths, patios, etc.  相似文献

Reclaimed asphalt (RA) and Warm mix asphalt (WMA) are two widely used environmentally friendly mixtures in the paving industry. This study compares the laboratory performance of conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA) with virgin WMA, and WMA containing 60% RA content, using thermal stress restrained specimen test, wheel tracking test, and indirect tensile strength test. Based on test results, a reduction of 15 °C in mixing temperature was achieved for WMA mixtures compared to HMA using the given chemical additive. The virgin WMA mixture showed superior cracking resistance but lower rutting resistance than HMA, and incorporation of RA material without any further modification in the binder, deteriorated both cracking and rutting performance of WMA. It was also shown that laboratory short-term aging can significantly affect the performance of the mixtures.  相似文献

Waste tire disposal continues to pose a threat to the environment due to its non-biodegradable nature. Therefore, some means of managing waste tires include grinding them to crumb rubber (CR) sizes and using them as a partial replacement to fine aggregate in concrete. However, the use of CR has a series of advantages, but its major disadvantage is strength reduction. This leads to the utilization of calcium carbide waste (CCW) to mitigate the negative effect of CR in self-compacting concrete (SCC). This study investigates the durability properties of SCC containing CR modified using fly ash and CCW. The durability properties considered are water absorption, acid attack, salt resistance, and elevated temperature of the mixes. The experiment was conducted for mixes with no-fly ash content and their replica mixes containing fly ash to replace 40% of the cement. In the mixes, CR was used to partially replace fine aggregate in proportions of 0%, 10%, and 20% by volume, and CCW was used as a partial replacement to cement at 0%, 5%, and 10% by volume. The results indicate that the mixes containing fly ash had higher resistance to acid (H2SO4) and salt (MgSO4), with up to 23% resistance observed when compared to the mix containing no fly ash. In addition, resistance to acid attack decreased with the increase in the replacement of fine aggregate with CR. The same principle applied to the salt attack scenario, although the rate was more rapid with the acid than the salt. The results obtained from heating indicate that the weight loss was reduced slightly with the increase in CCW, and was increased with the increase in CR and temperature. Similarly, the compressive strength was observed to slightly increase at room temperature (27 °C) and the greatest loss in compressive strength was observed between the temperature of 300 and 400 °C. However, highest water absorption, of 2.83%, was observed in the mix containing 20% CR, and 0% CCW, while the lowest water absorption, of 1.68%, was found in the mix with 0% CR, 40% fly ash, and 10% CCW. In conclusion, fly ash is recommended for concrete structures immersed in water, acid, or salt in sulphate- and magnesium-prone areas; conversely, fly ash and CR reduce the resistance of SCC to heat beyond 200 °C.  相似文献

Asphalt mortar is a typical temperature-sensitive material that plays a crucial role in the performance of asphalt mixture. This study evaluates the high- and low-temperature performance of asphalt mortar based on the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) method. Temperature-sweep tests of asphalt mortars were conducted using the DMA method under fixed strain level, frequency, and heating rate conditions. The dynamic mechanical response curves, characteristic temperature, and other indices were obtained and used to investigate the high- and low-temperature performance of asphalt mortar. The results showed that the phase transition temperatures T1, T0, and Tg can be used to evaluate the low-temperature performance of asphalt mortar. Additionally, they had a good linear relationship, and the evaluation results were consistent. Meanwhile, T2, E60, and tan(δ)max indicators can effectively evaluate the high-temperature performance of asphalt mortar. Asphalt plays a key role in the performance of asphalt mortar. Mortars with neat asphalt A70 and modified asphalt AR had the worst and best high- and low-temperature performances, respectively. Furthermore, the finer gradation improved the low-temperature performance of asphalt mortar, while the coarser gradation improved the high-temperature properties of modified asphalt mortars but had the opposite effect on neat asphalt A70.  相似文献

The alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is an important consideration in ensuring the long-term durability of concrete materials, especially for those containing reactive aggregates. Although fly ash (FA) has proven to be useful in preventing ASR expansion, the filler effect and the effect of FA fineness on ASR expansion are not well defined in the present literature. Hence, this study aimed to examine the effects of the filler and fineness of FA on ASR mortar expansion. FAs with two different finenesses were used to substitute ordinary Portland cement (OPC) at 20% by weight of binder. River sand (RS) with the same fineness as the FA was also used to replace OPC at the same rate as FA. The replacement of OPC with RS (an inert material) was carried out to observe the filler effect of FA on ASR. The results showed that FA and RS provided lower ASR expansions compared with the control mortar. Fine and coarse fly ashes in this study had almost the same effectiveness in mitigating the ASR expansion of the mortars. For the filler effect, smaller particles of RS had more influence on the ASR reduction than RS with coarser particles. A significant mitigation of the ASR expansion was obtained by decreasing the OPC content in the mortar mixture through its partial substitution with FA and RS.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash from a cogeneration plant on the physical and mechanical properties and durability of cement concrete. Part of the cement in concrete mixtures tested was replaced with 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12% by weight of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash. Concrete modified with 6% of bottom ash had a higher density (2323 kg/m3), compressive strength at 28 days (36.1 MPa), ultrasonic pulse velocity (3980 m/s), and lower water absorption rate (3.93%). The tests revealed that frost resistance, determined in all-sided testing directions, of concrete modified with 6%, 9%, and 12% of bottom ash added by weight of cement corresponds to strength grade F100. Supplementary cementitious materials have been widely used to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions caused by ordinary Portland cement (OPC), including in the construction of road bases. In addition, the use of OPC in road base stabilization is inefficient due to its moisture sensitivity and lack of flexibility. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of hybrid alkali-activated materials (H-AAM) on flexibility and water prevention when used as binders while proposing a new and sustainable material. A cationic asphalt emulsion (CAE) was applied to increase this cementless material’s resistance to moisture damage and flexibility. The physical properties and structural formation of this H-AAM, consisting of fly ash, hydrated lime, and sodium hydroxide, were examined. The results revealed that the addition of CAE decreased the material’s mechanical strength due to its hindrance of pozzolanic reactions and alkali activations. This study revealed decreases in the cementitious product’s peak in the x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) tests and the number of tetrahedrons detected in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR) tests. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed some signs of asphalt films surrounding hybrid alkali-activated particles and even some unreacted FA particles, indicating incomplete chemical reactions in the study material’s matrix. However, the H-AAM was still able to meet the minimum road base strength requirement of 1.72 MPa. Furthermore, the toughness and flexibility of the H-AAM were enhanced by CAE. Notably, adding 10% and 20% CAE by weight to the hybrid alkali-activated binder produced a significant advantage in terms of water absorption, which can be explained by its influence on the material’s consolidation of its matrices, resulting in significant void reductions. Hence, the outcomes of this study might reveal an opportunity for developing a new stabilizing agent for road bases with water-prevention properties and flexibility that remains faithful to the green construction material concept.  相似文献

The objective of this research was to develop a solution for the deterioration effect on the high-temperature rutting performance and water stability of SMC. This research proposed a method for designing an SMC normal temperature modified asphalt mixture based on the existing findings, experimental research and the performance balance. First, the power function curve model of the aggregate gradation was put forward. The 0.075 mm, 4.75 mm and nominal maximum particle size were the key points of the aggregate gradation, and their passing rate was about 6%, 30%, and 95% respectively. Then, on the basis of the quadratic curve model, a method for determination of the optimum asphalt aggregate ratio of SMC normal temperature modified asphalt mixture was put forward, considering the skeleton-density structure. Last, rutting tests, small beam bending tests, freeze-thaw split tests, permeability coefficient tests, texture depth tests and pavement roughness tests were conducted, and the test results all met the performance requirements of the specifications for the construction of highway asphalt pavement in China perfectly, especially the high-temperature and water stability properties, which indicated that the design method for SMC normal temperature modified asphalt mixtures based on performance balance presented in this paper was reasonable and practical.  相似文献

The defects of poor workability and inadequate pavement performance of the ultra-thin asphalt overlay limited its application in the preventive maintenance of pavements. In this study, a high-workability ultra-thin (HWU) asphalt overlay scheme was proposed. A high-strength-modified asphalt binder and an optimized HWU-10 gradation were used to prepare the HWU asphalt mixture and explore its laboratory performance. Furthermore, the HWU asphalt mixture was used for the test road paving. Based on the field performance test results before and after the test road for one year of traffic operation, the application performance of the HWU asphalt mixture and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt mixture was compared and analyzed. The results showed that the HWU asphalt mixture possessed satisfactory laboratory pavement performance, and its high-temperature stability and moisture damage resistance were better than those of the SBS-modified asphalt mixture. The asphalt mixture prepared using HWU-10 gradation was easily compacted and showed good workability. After one year of operation, all field performance of the ultra-thin overlay paved with HWU asphalt mixture met the specification requirements, but its flatness and skid resistance decreased. It is worth mentioning that the HWU asphalt mixture was significantly better than the SBS-modified asphalt mixture in terms of performance degradation resistance and rutting resistance. The studies to enhance the road intersection pavement performance and ensure the homogeneous dispersion of polyester fibers in the asphalt mixture will be considered in the future.  相似文献

In order to ensure smooth traffic and driving safety, deicing salt or snow melting agents are usually adopted to solve the problem of traffic jams and prevent pavement surfaces from freezing. The objective of this present study is to investigate the performance deterioration evaluation of asphalt mixture under the chloride salt erosion environment. Five chloride salt solution concentrations were designed and the uniaxial static compression creep test, low-temperature IDT test, freeze-thaw splitting test, and freeze-thaw cycle test were carried out for asphalt mixtures (AC-16) soaked in chloride salt solution. Results showed that with the increase in chloride salt solution concentration, the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, and water stability of the asphalt mixture decreases. Moreover, the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, and water stability of the asphalt mixture show a decreasing trend under different chloride salt solution concentrations following the negative cubic polynomial function. Based on the viscoelastic analysis, chloride salt solution could reduce the ability of the asphalt mixture to resist instantaneous elastic deformation and permanent deformation, and this influence will become more obvious with the increase in chloride salt solution concentration. In addition, the salt freeze-thaw cycle test indicated that in the early stage of freeze-thaw cycles, the splitting tensile strength of the asphalt mixture decreases rapidly, then tends to be flat, and then decreases rapidly. This study explores the performance damage law of asphalt mixture under salt corrosion, and the analysis results of this study could provide some references for the chloride salt dosage in the snow melting project while spreading deicing salt.  相似文献

Alkali-activated mortars and concretes have been gaining increased attention due to their potential for providing a more sustainable alternative to traditional ordinary Portland cement mixtures. In addition, the inclusion of high volumes of recycled materials in these traditional mortars and concretes has been shown to be particularly challenging. The compositions of the mixtures present in this paper were designed to make use of a hybrid alkali-activation model, as they were mostly composed of class F fly ash and calcium-rich precursors, namely, ordinary Portland cement and calcium hydroxide. Moreover, the viability of the addition of fine milled glass wastes and fine limestone powder, as a source of soluble silicates and as a filler, respectively, was also investigated. The optimization criterium for the design of fly ash-based alkali-activated mortar compositions was the maximization of both the compressive strength and environmental performance of the mortars. With this objective, two stages of optimization were conceived: one in which the inclusion of secondary precursors in ambient-cured mortar samples was implemented and, simultaneously, in which the compositions were tested for the determination of short-term compressive strength and another phase containing a deeper study on the effects of the addition of glass wastes on the compressive strength of mortar samples cured for 24 h at 80 °C and tested up to 28 days of curing. Furthermore, in both stages, the effects (on the compressive strength) of the inclusion of construction and demolition recycled aggregates were also investigated. The results show that a heat-cured fly ash-based mortar containing a 1% glass powder content (in relation to the binder weight) and a 10% replacement of natural aggregate for CDRA may display as much as a 28-day compressive strength of 31.4 MPa.  相似文献

Beneficiating fly ash as valuable construction material such as artificial lightweight aggregate (LWA) could be an alternative solution to increase the utilization of the industrial by-product. However, generally, LWA is characterized by high porosity and a related high water absorption, which on the one hand allows production of lightweight mortar, but on the other hand can affect its performance. Thus, in this research, the durability performance of mortar composed with alkali-activated fly ash-based LWA, and commercial expanded clay (EC) LWA was investigated. The fly ash LWA was prepared in a pan granulator, with a 6-molar solution of NaOH mixed with Na2SiO3 in a Na2SiO3/NaOH weight ratio of 1.5 being used as activator (FA 6M LWA). The results revealed that mortar containing FA 6M LWA had equivalent mechanical strength with mortar containing EC LWA. The mortar containing FA 6M LWA had comparable capillary water uptake and chloride migration resistance with the reference and EC LWA mortar. Furthermore, the addition of FA 6M LWA was proven to enhance the carbonation resistance in the resulting mortar, due to the denser interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of mortar with LWA.  相似文献

This research studied a new material named modified infrared powder (MIRP) for decreasing the high temperature of asphalt pavements which can help alleviate the urban heat island effect to some extent. Based on the physical apparent density tests of materials and infrared thermal radiation test, the cooling performance of MIRP was obtained. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy test (SEM) were conducted to analyze the chemical composition and the microstructure of MIRP, respectively. According to the radiant heat transfer theory, a thermal radiation model of the pavement equilibrium temperature was established by microscopic and chemical analysis to study the influence of thermal radiation asphalt mixture and reveal its cooling performance. The results show that the main components of MIRP are metal oxides and nonmetallic oxides which improve its infrared emissivity. Compared with limestone mineral powder asphalt mortar, the asphalt mortar with MIRP had a more compact structure and uniform distribution, and enhanced the overall structural performance of the mixture. The thermal radiation model reveals that the pavement equilibrium temperature combined with the MIRP in asphalt mixture decreases with the increase of the longwave emissivity, and it diminishes with the decrease of the shortwave absorptivity.  相似文献

This article presents a new methodology of analysis based on a fast-running experimental procedure to characterise the mechanical response of asphalt mortars in terms of stiffness, ductility, and fatigue resistance. This was achieved using the DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analyser) three-point bending configuration. The study was carried out by considering the employment of different types of fillers such cement and CaCO3 and different types of binders such as conventional asphalt binder (B35/50) or modifided polymer-modified bitumen (PMB 25/55–65). From the results of this study, the filler was found to have a greater influence on the stiffness and ductility of the asphalt material, while bitumen had a higher effect on the fatigue life of the asphalt mortar. Fatigue life was observed to increase with the use of a polymer-modified binder, while a lower degree of permanent deformation and higher bearing capacity achieved by the use of cement instead of calcium carbonate as active fillers.  相似文献

In this paper, phase-change material (PCM) and ceramsite were used to increase the heat resistance of the asphalt mixture. The ceramsite asphalt mixture with PCM can bring a specific cooling effect to the road surface and alleviate the rapid deterioration at high temperature. Two phase-change materials, PCM-43 and PCM-48, were compared and selected as the heat absorption material of the asphalt mixture. It is found that PCM-43 has better thermal stability, temperature regulation performance, higher enthalpy value, and a less adverse effect on the rheological properties of asphalt. According to the road performance of the asphalt mixture, it suggests that the maximum content of ceramsite is 40%. The specific heat capacity of asphalt mixtures was studied by the method of the insulation bucket test, and the thermal conductivity coefficient of asphalt mixtures was tested by a thermal conductivity instrument. The results show that the specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture can be reduced by adding PCM and ceramsite. The effect of ceramsite asphalt concrete with PCM on the temperature field of road structure was further analyzed by finite element method. Due to the thermal resistance of ceramsite in the upper layer, the cooling range and depth in the middle and lower surface layers can be improved. Meanwhile, the heat absorption of phase-change material can alleviate the heating phenomenon of the upper layer. Therefore, ceramsite asphalt concrete with PCM is effective for decreasing the high temperatures in the asphalt pavements.  相似文献

Climate change has become trending news due to its serious impacts on Earth. Initiatives are being taken to lessen the impact of climate change and mitigate it. Among the different initiatives, researchers are aiming to find suitable alternatives for cement. This study is a humble effort to effectively utilize industrial- and agricultural-waste-based pozzolanic materials in concrete to make it economical and environmentally friendly. For this purpose, a ternary blend of binders (i.e., cement, fly ash, and rice husk ash) was employed in concrete. Different variables such as the quantity of different binders, fine and coarse aggregates, water, superplasticizer, and the age of the samples were considered to study their influence on the compressive strength of the ternary blended concrete using gene expression programming (GEP) and artificial neural networking (ANN). The performance of these two models was evaluated using R2, RMSE, and a comparison of regression slopes. It was observed that the GEP model with 100 chromosomes, a head size of 10, and five genes resulted in an optimum GEP model, as apparent from its high R2 value of 0.80 and 0.70 in the TR and TS phase, respectively. However, the ANN model performed better than the GEP model, as evident from its higher R2 value of 0.94 and 0.88 in the TR and TS phase, respectively. Similarly, lower values of RMSE and MAE were observed for the ANN model in comparison to the GEP model. The regression slope analysis revealed that the predicted values obtained from the ANN model were in good agreement with the experimental values, as shown by its higher R2 value (0.89) compared with that of the GEP model (R2 = 0.80). Subsequently, parametric analysis of the ANN model revealed that the addition of pozzolanic materials enhanced the compressive strength of the ternary blended concrete samples. Additionally, we observed that the compressive strength of the ternary blended concrete samples increased rapidly within the first 28 days of casting.  相似文献
