Enteric pathogens associated with diarrhea were studied for two years at a diarrhea treatment center in rural Bangladesh. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) was the most frequently identified pathogen for patients of all ages. Rotavirus and ETEC were isolated from approximately 50% and approximately 25%, respectively, of patients less than two years of age. A bacterial or viral pathogen was identified for 70% of these young children and for 56% of all patients with diarrhea. Most ETEC isolates were obtained in the hot dry months of March and April and the hot wet months of August and September. Rotavirus identification peaked in the cool dry months of December and January, but infected patients were found year-round. The low case-fatality rates for patients with watery diarrhea and substantial dehydration further document the usefulness of treating patients with diarrhea with either a glucose- or sucrose-base electrolyte solution such as those used in this treatment center.  相似文献

In 8 villages of rural northeastern Egypt, a 2-year study of the etiologic agents associated with episodes of diarrhea was carried out. Stool specimens (3,243) from 3,513 episodes of diarrhea were processed for enteropathogens. The most commonly identified agents in the group with diarrhea were Giardia lamblia (44%), heat stable enterotoxin (ST)-producing enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) (15%), heat labile toxin (LT)-producing ETEC (12%), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) (4%), rotavirus (3%), Shigella (2%) and Salmonella (1%). Isolation rates were increased in cases compared to controls for all agents except G. lamblia and EPEC strains. Rotavirus, Salmonella and ST-producing ETEC were more frequently isolated during cooler months and Shigella and LT-ETEC occurred more commonly in warmer months. Campylobacter, EPEC, Giardia and E. histolytica did not show a discernable seasonal pattern. Rotavirus was primarily associated with diarrhea in infants only. Forty-four percent of children experienced at least 1 bout of rotavirus diarrhea by the age of 3 years. Vomiting was reported in 65% of cases of rotavirus infection. Dehydration was reported in greater than 40% of those with rotavirus-, Salmonella-, Campylobacter-, LT-ETEC- and EPEC-associated illness and in those without an identifiable agent. While rotavirus was implicated in 3% of cases overall, when vomiting or vomiting plus dehydration occurred, rotavirus was identified with a rate of 10% and 12%, respectively. Dysentery was common only in Shigella cases, occurring in 24%. A decrease in occurrence of rotavirus, Campylobacter and possibly EPEC illness was seen in the infants less than 6 months of age who were breast-fed when compared to those who were not.  相似文献

A total of 271 stool specimens were collected from children (diarrheagenic, n = 115 and control, n = 54) and adults (diarrheagenic, n = 73 and control, n = 29) from Tunis, Tunisia, and processed to detect bacterial enteropathogens, parasites, and viruses. Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) were identified by their virulence genes (polymerase chain reaction) and adherence patterns (tissue culture assays). The most frequently isolated enteric pathogens from diarrheagenic children were enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC, 32.3%), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC, 11.3%), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC, (11.3%), adenovirus (10.4%), enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC, 10.4%), and Salmonella spp. (9.5%). For children in the control group, ETEC (37%), EAEC (15%), EHEC (11.1%), and typical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC, 11.1%) were the most common enteric pathogens. In adults in the diarrheagenic group, Salmonella spp. (34.2%), ETEC (12.3%), adenovirus (7%), and Shigella spp. (4%) were the most common enteric pathogens. In adults in the control group, ETEC (31%) was the most common enteric pathogen. Multiple pathogens were recovered from 22% of the diarrheagenic children and 7% of the diarrheagenic adults. Escherichia coli strains showed high resistance rates to tetracycline, streptomycin, and beta-lactams. The most frequent combinations were ETEC-rotavirus and ETEC-adenovirus. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for DEC indicated a large number of DEC clones (five major clones) persistent in the community reservoir for a considerable period of time that caused diarrhea in the population. This suggests the confluence of small epidemics by clonally related DEC strains circulating in this region.  相似文献

During a 17-month period (01/11/85-05/31/86) 225 cases of nosocomial diarrhea were identified in a children's hospital. Diarrhea was considered to be nosocomial if it began at least 72 hours after the patient's hospital admission or within 3 days after discharge. One or more routine diagnostic studies for identification of a pathogen were performed in 195 (87%) cases. The most commonly performed test was the bacterial stool culture. None of these samples yielded a bacterial pathogen. The only pathogens detected by routine laboratory studies were rotavirus (61/137 [45%] samples were positive for rotavirus by ELISA) and Clostridium difficile (9/54 [17%] positive for toxin). Of the patients whose tests were positive for rotavirus 56 were younger than 2 years of age, and all were identified in the winter and spring. When multiple stool samples were tested by the diagnostic laboratory, rotavirus was identified in an additional 14 patients whose initial stool samples were negative for rotavirus. All patients whose tests were positive for C. difficile toxin had received antibiotics within the previous 3 months. Ova/parasites were not detected in 53 of the tested stools. We also identified enteric adenovirus in six patients. Viruses were identified in 95 (42%) of the 225 cases of nosocomial gastroenteritis. Nosocomial diarrhea is common in a children's hospital. Rotavirus is the most commonly identified pathogen. Rotavirus testing is valuable in children with nosocomial diarrhea who are younger than 2 years of age, especially in the winter and spring. Multiple samples may be necessary to identify rotavirus. 目的 研究引起社区获得性肺炎(CAP)的病原体分布及患者入选前是否应用抗生素、肺炎患者预后研究组(PORT)分级等的情况,同时检测常见病原菌的耐药性。方法 入选2003年12月至2004年11月中国7个城市12个中心的665例CAP患者并进行病原体检测。病原体确定诊断的阳性判断标准为:(1)合格痰标本培养出1株或多株细菌;(2)血培养检出病原体;(3)间隔2~4周采集的2次标本的血清肺炎支原体、肺炎衣原体或嗜肺军团菌抗体滴度呈现4倍或4倍以上增高或降低。应用琼脂稀释法对常见病原菌进行最低抑菌浓度(MIC)检测。结果 在610例同时进行了细菌培养和血清学检测的患者中,肺炎支原体是最常见的病原体,阳性率为20.7%(126例),其后依次为肺炎链球菌10.3%(63例)、流感嗜血杆菌9.2%(56例)、肺炎衣原体6,6%(40例)、肺炎克雷伯杆菌6.1%(37例)、嗜肺军团菌5.1%(31例)、金黄色葡萄球菌3.8%(23例)、大肠杆菌1.6%(10例)、卡他莫拉菌1.3%(8例)、铜绿假单胞菌1.0%(6例)。在195例细菌培养阳性患者中,共有10.2%(62例)合并非典型病原体感染。69株肺炎链球菌,对青霉素、阿奇霉素和莫西沙星的不敏感率分别为20.3%、75.4%和4.3%。结论 非典型病原体尤其是肺炎支原体感染在CAP中占据重要地位;细菌合并非典型病原体的混合感染占10.2%。肺炎链球菌、流感嗜血杆菌仍为常见的致病细菌,我国致CAP肺炎链球菌对大环内酯类抗生素的耐药率高达75.0%以上,对青霉素的不敏感率为20,3%.  相似文献

To identify Escherichia coli that cause infantile diarrhea in Bangkok, Thailand, E. coli isolated in a year-long study of infantile diarrhea were examined for O and H serotypes and virulence determinants. Classic enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) were isolated from 28 of 509 infants with diarrhea (cases) and 11 of 509 age-matched controls (P = .009; odds ratio [OR], 2.64). Most of this difference was attributable to EPEC adherence factor (EAF)-positive EPEC that produced an attachment and effacement lesion, as identified in the fluorescence actin staining assay, isolated from 13 cases and 1 control (P = .003; OR, 13.3). EAF-EPEC was isolated from 15 cases and 10 controls (P = .418; OR, 1.52) and EAF+ non-EPEC from 17 cases and 10 controls (P = .242; OR, 1.72). EAF+EPEC that caused an attachment and effacement lesion was found in 3% of children less than 6 months old with diarrhea who were studied in an outpatient clinic in Bangkok in 1988.  相似文献

Aetiology of acute diarrhoea in hospitalized children in Hong Kong   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
To determine the role of enteric pathogens in acute childhood diarrhoea in Hong Kong, 388 children with diarrhoea and 306 children of similar age without diarrhoea were evaluated in a hospital-based study during a one-year period from August 1994 to July 1995. Of the diarrhoeal cases, 55% were under 1 year and 95% were below 5 years of age. On admission, 22% had some dehydration but none was severely dehydrated. All children were well nourished. Over 60% of children with diarrhoea had one or more pathogens in their stool. Rotavirus was the most commonly isolated pathogen (34.6%), followed by Salmonella (23.3%), Campylobacter (4.7%) and Shigella (2.1%). Rotavirus was not assessed in the controls and was detected mainly during the winter months December to February. Bacterial pathogens were identified more commonly in diarrhoea patients (30%) than in controls (5.6%) (P<0.001). Despite rapid recent socioeconomic development in Hong Kong, non-typhoidal Salmonella diarrhoea remains a significant local problem in infants under 1 year. Further detailed assessment of the transmission and prevention of this infection is required.  相似文献

A total of 334 diarrheal fecal samples (from 210 males and 124 females) collected in Kathmandu, Nepal, were studied for various kinds of enteropathogens. Overall, 33% (111/334) fecal samples were positive for one or more enteropathogens. There was no difference in detection rates between males and females. Enteropathogen detection rates in summer, winter, spring, and autumn were 61% (40/66), 52% (45/87), 31% (25/81), and 25% (25/100), respectively. Altogether eight species of bacteria, three genera of viruses, and five species of protozoan parasites were detected with considerable seasonal variations. Among the bacterial isolates, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli topped the list followed by Vibrio sp. Only one sample had Shigella (S. sonnei). Rotavirus type A was the most frequently detected among the enteric viruses, followed by human enterovirus and human adenovirus, respectively. Among the enteric protozoan parasites, Giardia intestinalis was the most frequently detected followed by Cryptosporidium parvum. Detection of bacterial and protozoan pathogens showed a slightly high tendency in the summer season compared with that in the other seasons (p>0.05), whereas the detection of viruses was significantly high in the winter season (p<0.05). Of the total 57 water samples, 43 (75%) showed one or more bacterial species out of which 51% (22/43) were E. coli. Among the E. coli isolates, 68% were EPEC. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (O157) was not detected.  相似文献

Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) are important enteric pathogens that cause a wide variety of gastrointestinal diseases, particularly in children. Escherichia coli isolates cultured from 243 diarrheal stool samples obtained from Libyan children and 50 water samples were screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for genes characteristic of enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), and enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC). The DEC were detected in 21 (8.6%) children with diarrhea; 10 (4.1%) cases were identified as EAEC, 3 (1.2%) as EPEC, and 8 (3.3%) were ETEC; EHEC, and EIEC were not detected. All DEC were grouped phylogenetically by PCR with the majority (> 70%) identified as phylogenetic groups A and B1. The EAEC isolates were also tested for eight genes associated with virulence using PCR. Multi-virulence (≥ 3 virulence factors) was found in 50% of EAEC isolates. Isolated EAEC possessed different virulence traits and belonged to different phylogenetic groups indicating their heterogeneity.  相似文献

Infectious diarrhea is a major contributor of child morbidity and mortality in developing nations. Murine models to study the pathogenesis of infectious diarrhea caused by organisms such as enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) are not fully characterized. More emphasis has been placed on infection of mice with the murine specific pathogen Citrobacter rodentium. While these three organisms are genetically related they are not identical. Our goal was to better characterize the murine model of EPEC and EHEC infection by using bioluminescent bacteria to determine temporal and spatial colonization of these two human pathogens. EPEC and EHEC were transformed with a bacterial luciferase expression plasmid containing the constitutive OmpC promoter. C57BL/6 mice were orally inoculated with bioluminescent EPEC or EHEC and bacterial localization in the intestine was monitored ex vivo and in vivo by IVIS. At 3 days after infection, EPEC, EHEC and Citrobacter rodentium were all localized in the cecum and colon. EPEC colonization peaked at day 2-3 and was undetectable by day 7. The bioluminescent EPEC adheres to the cecum and colon of the mouse intestine. However, when EPEC infected mice were administered xylazine/ketamine for in vivo live imaging, the EPEC persisted at high densities for up to 31 days. This is the first report of a bioluminescent imaging of luciferase expressing EPEC in a mouse model.  相似文献

Adherence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) to enterocytes with subsequent destruction of microvilli is supposed to be their mechanism of virulence. Adhesion may be studied in vitro systems using HeLa or HEp-2 cells, to which EPEC adhere in a localized pattern. We show here that colostrum and human milk inhibit E. coli 0111ab:H2 adherence to HeLa cells in different experimental conditions. Lactose does not seem to be involved in the in vitro inhibition since no effect was observed when a concentration of 7.5% was used during the test. A bacterial growth curve performed in same conditions of adherence test showed no bacteriostatic effect of human milk. S-IgA and receptor analogues could be responsible for the adherence inhibition observed.  相似文献

The frequency of diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) strains was investigated in 253 children up to 3 years old, with (patient group, PG, 199 children) and without (control group, CG, 54 children) diarrhoea, living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. DEC strains were detected in 70 (27.6%) children, including 54 (27.1%) with diarrhoea and 16 (29.6%) without diarrhoea. Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) was the most frequent DEC category, accounting for 14.6% of the isolates in the PG and for 11.1% in the CG. E. coli strains carrying enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) virulence markers showed higher incidence in the CG (12.9%) than in the PG (8.0%). E. coli strains belonging to non-classical EPEC groups that carried eae only or eae and bfpA, designated as attaching-effacing E. coli (AEEC) were the most frequent (79.1%). Simultaneous presence of multiple EPEC virulence factors (EAF/eae/bfpA) were only detected among strains isolated from the PG. Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) strains were isolated from 5.5% of the children in the CG and from 3.5% of those in the PG. Most of the ETEC isolates were LT-probe positive (70%) and none carried both LT-I and ST-I probe sequences. One enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) strain was recovered from a child with diarrhoea. No stx-probe positive E. coli strains were detected. Overall, DEC strains were not found to be significantly associated with diarrhoea (p>0.05). However, the higher incidence of EAEC, the most frequent DEC category, among children with diarrhoea, suggests a potential role of EAEC as an important enteric pathogen in the community investigated.  相似文献

Case-control study of endemic diarrheal disease in Thai children   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
In a year-long, case-control study of endemic diarrheal disease among 1230 Thai children less than five years of age, rotavirus was detected in 20%, Campylobacter in 13%, Shigella in 13%, Salmonella in 12%, and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in 9%. The differences in detection of enteric pathogens between patients and controls was significant for rotavirus (P less than .001), Shigella (P less than .001), ETEC that produced heat-labile and heat-stable toxins (LT and ST; P = .005), and ST only (P less than .001). C. jejuni was most significantly associated with diarrhea in children less than 12 months [corrected] old (P = .037) and Salmonella in children less than three months of age (P = .003). Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) that adhered in a localized pattern to HeLa cells was isolated from 7% of patients and 3% of controls less than six months of age. Only 50% of these E. coli strains were of EPEC serotypes. Enteroinvasive E. coli was isolated from 7% of patients more than two years of age, and new serotypes were identified.  相似文献

Aetiology and epidemiology of acute gastro-enteritis in Swedish children   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
In a prospective 1-year study, 144 children attending or admitted to hospital and 272 children outside hospital with acute gastro-enteritis and 200 controls were investigated by a broad panel of diagnostic methods for enteropathogenic agents in the faeces and for related antibody responses. Enteropathogens were identified in 77% of the inpatients, 63% of the outpatients and 8% of the controls. Rotavirus and Yersinia enterocolitica were detected significantly more often among inpatients. Altogether, viral, bacterial and parasitic agents were found in 58%, 14% and 1% of diarrhoeal patients, respectively. The isolation of more than one pathogenic agent was uncommon (6.5%). Rotavirus (45%) and enteric adenoviruses 40 and 41 (7.9%) predominated among the viruses, while Campylobacter jejuni (4.8%) was most common among the bacteria. Clostridium difficile and/or its cytotoxin, which were found in 14% of the children with gastroenteritis and in 15% of the controls, were significantly associated with antibiotic therapy but not with gastro-intestinal illness. Diarrhoeal infections of unknown aetiology exhibited a seasonal peak in the autumn. The duration of excretion of enteropathogens was investigated. Rotavirus particles were detectable by solid-phase immune electron microscopy for 14-25 days after the diarrhoea had ceased. Transmission of rotavirus and bacterial pathogens within families was studied also.  相似文献

Gastroenteritis in children: a two-year review in Manitoba. I. Etiology.   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
During two years, 1,217 children hospitalized with gastroenteritis at the Children's Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada were studied. Bacterial pathogens were present in 25% of these children: enteropathogenic Escherichia coli in 120, Shigella in 139, Salmonella in 24, and multiple pathogens in 18. Rotavirus was detected in 54 (11%) of 472 patients examined. Rotavirus and enteropathogenic E. coli were the most common pathogens in infants, and Shigella was the most common in older children. Bacterial diarrhea occurred more commonly in summer, whereas rotavirus infection occurred more commonly in winter. Among 276 children screened, enterotoxigenic E. coli was found in three, and Aeromonas shigelloides that produced a similar toxin in two others. Enteroinvasive E. coli was not detected in 70 children. Organisms producing toxins "cytotoxic" to HeLa cells were isolated from three of 90 children. Screening for enterotoxigenic or enteroinvasive organisms was not productive of a significant number of pathogens, and, although screening for rotavirus did improve the number of etiologic diagnoses, the etiology of the majority of cases of diarrhea remained unknown.  相似文献

Infections from enteric bacteria such as enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) are a public health threat worldwide. EPEC and EHEC are extracellular pathogens, and their interaction with host surface receptors is critical to the infection process. We previously demonstrated that polyethylene glycol (PEG) downregulates surface receptors in intestinal cells. Here we show that PEG decreases β1-integrin, the surface receptor in intestinal cells that is critical for EPEC and EHEC attachment. We hypothesized that PEG would inhibit the attachment of these enteric pathogens to host cells and improve clinical signs of infection. We found that attachment of the mouse enteric pathogen Citrobacter rodentium, which belongs to the same group of pathogens as EPEC and EHEC, was attenuated by the concurrent presence of PEG. Pretreatment with PEG, without concurrent presence during infection, also reduced bacterial attachment. This finding was further supported in vivo such as that PEG administered by gavage daily during infection as well as prior to infection significantly decreased C. rodentium in the colon and improved the appearance of the infected colon in mice. In addition, PEG decreased the β1-integrin in colonic mucosa and reduced the C. rodentium-induced activation of epidermal growth factor receptors. PEG also significantly reduced infection-induced colonic inflammation. Finally, PEG efficiently reduced C. rodentium shedding from the colon during infection. In conclusion, PEG can be an efficient and safe preventive agent against EPEC and EHEC infections.  相似文献

Background.?The etiology of childhood diarrhea is frequently unknown. Methods.?We sought Aeromonas, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Pleisiomonas shigelloides, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio, and Yersinia (by culture), adenoviruses, astroviruses, noroviruses, rotavirus, and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC; by enzyme immunoassay), Clostridium difficile (by cytotoxicity), parasites (by microscopy), and enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC; by polymerase chain reaction [PCR] analysis) in the stools of 254 children with diarrhea presenting to a pediatric emergency facility. Age- and geographic-matched community controls without diarrhea (n?=?452) were similarly studied, except bacterial cultures of the stool were limited only to cases. Results.?Twenty-nine (11.4%) case stools contained 13 Salmonella, 10 STEC (6 O157:H7 and 4 non-O157:H7 serotypes), 5 Campylobacter, and 2 Shigella. PCR-defined EAEC were present more often in case (3.2%) specimens than in control (0.9%) specimens (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-13.7), and their adherence phenotypes were variable. Rotavirus, astrovirus, and adenovirus were more common among cases than controls, but both groups contained noroviruses and C. difficile at similar rates. PCR evidence of hypervirulent C. difficile was found in case and control stools; parasites were much more common in control specimens. Conclusions.?EAEC are associated with childhood diarrhea in Seattle, but the optimal way to identify these agents warrants determination. Children without diarrhea harbor diarrheagenic pathogens, including hypervirulent C. difficile. Our data support the importance of taking into account host susceptibility, microbial density, and organism virulence traits in future case-control studies, not merely categorizing candidate pathogens as being present or absent.  相似文献

The aetiology of diarrhoeal diseases was investigated among 715 patients admitted to four Children's Hospitals in Tehran, during February 1986 to March 1987, and also among 443 patients attending the central Out-Patient Clinic in Sanandaj, State of Kordestan, during October 1986. Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) were the most common pathogens found in both areas. Almost 26.7% of the patients in Tehran and 20.1% of the patients in Sanandaj were infected with EPEC. Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) were the next most frequent groups found (17.1% both in Tehran and Sanandaj), with heat-stable enterotoxin (ST)-producing strains being dominant. Of 122 ETEC strains isolated in Tehran, 94 (77%) strains produced ST, 15 (12.3%) strains produced heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) and 13 (10.7%) strains produced both LT and ST. Almost the same pattern of toxigenicity was observed among ETEC strains isolated in Sanadaj. Of the 76 ETEC strains isolated in this area, 70 (92.1%) strains were ST producers, followed by those producing both LT and ST (five strains) and LT only (one strain). One strain of enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) was also isolated from a patient in Tehran. The rates of salmonella and shigella isolation were 8.8 and 5.7% in Tehran and 3.8 and 4% in Sanandaj respectively. Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli, Vibrio cholerae and V. parahemolyticus were not isolated but a mixture of two or more pathogens was found in 59 patients (8.2%) in Tehran and in 20 patients (4.5%) in Sanandaj. These findings suggest that diarrhoegenic E. coli are the most important cause of diarrhoeal diseases in infants and young children in these areas in Iran.  相似文献

To determine the role of rotavirus, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and enteropathogenic E. coli in diarrheal disease of non-hospitalized children and adults living in rural El Salvador, stool specimens were collected from 156 persons with diarrhea and 134 age- and sex-matched controls over a 1-year period. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) were isolated as frequently from controls (13.4%) as from diarrhea cases (12.2%). Enteropathogenic E. coli were isolated from 13 cases (8.3%) and 10 (7.7%) controls. Rotavirus was demonstrated in only five of the 129 specimens from cases examined; the five persons infected were less than or equal to 3 years of age. No invasive E. coli were found. Serotyping of ETEC revealed serogroups of ETEC previously associated with enterotoxigenicity but was not helpful in separating infection from disease. The etiology of diarrhea in this rural, non-hospitalized population was complex. Isolation of a known pathogen did not prove etiology. The rotaviruses, which have been isolated frequently from hospitalized persons, were rare. Further laboratory and epidemiologic studies in such populations are needed to identify those factors that determine pathogenicity.  相似文献

A prospective study of acute diarrhoea was performed during 15 months 1981/1982 and included 731 patients and 240 controls. 43% had been infected abroad. A cluster of travellers with bacterial pathogens was diagnosed in July-August. The following pathogens were found: Campylobacter (18%), enterotoxigenic E. coli (6%), Salmonella spp. (5%), rotavirus (4%), Yersinia enterocolitica (3%), Giardia lamblia (3%), Shigella spp. (2%), Clostridium difficile (2%), enteroviruses (2%) and Entamoeba histolytica (less than 1%). More than 90% of the bacterial or parasitic enteropathogens were detected in the first stool sample. Only 10% of the patients needed hospital treatment and for 97% oral fluids were sufficient. The median duration of diarrhoea was 9 days. No fatal cases occurred and only 2 cases of chronic bowel disease were detected.  相似文献
