Hydraulically connected wetland microcosms vegetated with either Typha latifolia or Myriophyllum aquaticum were amended with an NH4NO3 and permethrin mixture to assess the effectiveness of both plant species in mitigating effects of the pollutant mixture on phytoplankton (as chlorophyll a) and Hyalella azteca. Phytoplankton grew in response to increased NH4NO3 in the presence of all plant species, but was unaffected by exposure to permethrin. H. azteca responses occurred rapidly (0.17 days), was mitigated within 1–2 days, and aqueous toxicity was unaffected by plant species type. A toxic unit model approach ascertained primary toxicity was permethrin with minimal additional toxicity from NH4NO3. Varying aquatic plant species had only modest influences on phytoplankton responses and no observable influence on animal responses during nitrogen-permethrin mixture exposures. As a result, both T. latifolia and M. aquaticum can be used as part of an effective agricultural best-management practice system for mitigating pollutant impacts of agricultural run-off.  相似文献

Filamentous mat-forming cyanobacteria are increasingly impairing uses of freshwater resources. To effectively manage, a better understanding of control measures is needed. Copper (Cu)-based algaecide formulations are often applied to reactively control nuisance cyanobacterial blooms. This laboratory research assessed typical field exposure scenarios for the ability of Cu to partition to, and accumulate in Lyngbya wollei. Exposure factors (Cu concentration?×?duration) of 4, 8, 16, 24, 32 h were tested across three aqueous Cu concentrations (1, 2, 4 ppm). Results indicated that internally accumulated copper correlated with control of L. wollei, independent of adsorbed copper. L. wollei control was determined by filament viability and chlorophyll a concentrations. Similar exposure factors elicited similar internalized copper levels and consequent responses of L. wollei. Ultimately, a “concentration-exposure-time” (CET) model was created to assist water resource managers in selecting an appropriate treatment regime for a specific in-water infestation. By assessing the exposure concentration and duration required to achieve the internal threshold of copper (i.e., critical burden) that elicits control, water management objectives can be achieved while simultaneously decreasing the environmental loading of copper and potential for non-target species risks.  相似文献

Airborne microorganisms (bioaerosol) from the China desert region, which are released into the atmosphere, disperse by the Asian dust event and affect ecosystems, human life, and atmospheric processes in downwind areas. However, the dynamics of airborne bacteria over the China desert regions have rarely been investigated. In this study, we analyzed bacterial communities in aerosols of the Asian dust source region (Taklimakan Desert) and compared them with the bacterial communities in sand dunes, for evaluating the mixtures from sand area to atmosphere. Air samples were collected at 10 m above the ground level from Dunhuang City during a dust event. The cell densities of airborne bacteria during a dust event were ten times more than that in non-dust periods. The 16S rDNA clone libraries from four air samples mainly belonged to two phyla, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. During a dust event, the proportion of Proteobacteria clones decreased, whereas that of Firmicutes clones increased. Sand samples were collected from the sand dunes in four sampling sites of the Taklimakan Desert. The bacterial communities in sand samples comprised of the members of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria. The clones of Firmicutes in both air and sand samples included Bacillus species, constituting more than 10 % of total clones. Airborne bacterial communities would be carried by the dust events from sand dunes. Propionibacterium species from the class Actinobacteria that were dominant in sand samples were not detected in the air samples, suggesting that atmospheric stressors eliminate some bacterial species. Presumably, airborne bacterial communities in the Asian dust source region are composed of local environmental bacteria, and their dynamics depend on the occurrence of a dust event.  相似文献

Introduction Maternal exposure to tobacco smoke is associated with shortened breastfeeding duration, but few studies have examined the effects on breastfeeding outcomes of low level exposures to other toxic chemicals. Moreover, it is unclear if passive smoking is associated with duration of breastfeeding. Our objective was therefore to examine the effect of low-level prenatal exposures to common environmental toxins (tobacco smoke, lead, and phthalates) on breastfeeding exclusivity and duration. Methods We conducted an analysis of data from the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study. Serum and urine samples were collected at approximately 16 and 26 weeks gestation and at delivery from 373 women; 302 breastfed their infants. Maternal infant feeding interviews were conducted a maximum of eight times through 30 months postpartum. The main predictor variables for this study were gestational exposures to tobacco smoke (measured by serum cotinine), lead, and phthalates. Passive smoke exposure was defined as cotinine levels of 0.015–3.0 μg/mL. Primary outcomes were duration of any and exclusive breastfeeding. Results Serum cotinine concentrations were negatively associated with the duration of any breastfeeding (29.9 weeks unexposed vs. 24.9 weeks with passive exposure, p?=?0.04; and 22.4 weeks with active exposure, p?=?0.12; p?=?0.03 for linear trend), but not duration of exclusive breastfeeding. Prenatal levels of blood lead and urinary phthalate metabolites were not significantly associated with duration of any or exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusions Passive exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy was associated with shortened duration of any breastfeeding.  相似文献

Absorption, accumulation and translocation of 12 trace elements in nine dominant mangrove plants in the Indian Sundarban Wetland revealed both organ-specific and site-specific characteristics. An overall enrichment of elements was recorded in rhizosediment, exceeding the prescribed effects range-low (ER-L) of consensus based sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) for Cu and Pb. Avicennia officinalis, A. alba, Ceriops decandra and Excoecaria agallocha exhibited unique potential for accumulating Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Mn and Zn and could be considered efficient accumulators. Maximum element accumulation in trunk bark (As 6.16, Cr 49.9, Co 2.67, Cu 91.00 and Zn 85.5 mg kg?1) and root/pneumatophore (Al 1000 and Fe 2430 mg kg?1) was recorded. Maximum bioconcentration factor (6.23) in A. officinalis and translocation factor (17.5 for Mn) in C. decandra distinguished their phytoremediation capacity. These halophytes could be used for trace element phytoremediation in stressed sites of Sundarban.  相似文献

The accumulation, elimination and effect of heavy metals on plasma cortisol levels in Oreochromis sp. were studied in the exposure and recovery phases. In the exposure phase, the mean rate of accumulation in the tissues was in the order gill?>?liver?>?muscle for Pb exposure and muscle?>?liver?>?gill for As exposure. In the recovery phase, the order of elimination in the tissues was gill?>?liver?>?muscle for Pb and liver?>?gill?>?muscle for As. The amount of cortisol secreted by the Oreochromis sp. after Pb or As treatment was lower compared to Oreochromis sp. in the control group during the exposure phase. In the recovery phase, plasma cortisol levels in Oreochromis sp. increased in all Pb treatment groups while it continuously decreased in all As treatment groups. A fish affected by As has obvious difficulty recovering from the stress response. It was concluded that exposure to the tested concentrations of Pb and As over 20 days could be a potent endocrine disruptor, which may lead to adverse impacts on the health of the Oreochromis sp.  相似文献

Purpose

To explore varied exposure to carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic chemicals (CMR) for French employees.

Methods

Our study assessed data from the French national cross-sectional survey of occupational risks (SUMER) that was conducted in 2010 in a national representative sample of employees. We selected 28 CMR agents that were classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer or European Union as being known or presumed to have CMR potential in humans. The association of individual and job characteristics with exposure prevalence, duration, and intensity of the CMR agents during a 1-week period was examined using multilevel logistic regression analysis.

Results

Overall, 10.4% of employees in 2010 were exposed to one or more CMR agents at their workplace, and 3.4% were subjected to multiple CMR exposures. Blue-collar workers, night-shift workers and workers with short-term employment contracts experienced higher exposure prevalence (p?<?0.01) and intensity (p?<?0.05). Blue-collar workers and shift workers experienced also longer exposure duration (p?<?0.001). Conversely, managers, workers of large companies, and women were less exposed to CMR agents (p?<?0.001). The presence of a Committee for Health, Safety, and Working Conditions, and intervention by Occupational Health and Safety officers were significantly associated with reduced exposure intensities (p?<?0.001 and p?<?0.05). Establishment of European CMR regulations and the existence of an applicable substitution principle reduced the exposure duration (p?<?0.001) and intensity (p?<?0.05).

Conclusions

Our results point out disparities in CMR exposure and identify high-priority targets for prevention measures to help reducing social health discrepancies.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of lead (Pb) and lead?+?zinc (Zn) combination on the oxidative stress, total ATPase and Pb accumulation in the tissues of Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). The fish were exposed to 0.1 mg/L Pb (T1), 1.0 mg/L Pb (T2) and mixtures of 0.1 mg/L Pb and 0.5 mg/L Zn (M1); 1.0 mg/L Pb and 5.0 mg/L Zn (M2) for 7 and 21 days. Pb accumulation, total ATPase activity, several antioxidant enzyme activities such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances concentrations were measured in the liver and kidney tissues. Metal accumulation in the tissues was higher in Pb exposure compare with mixtures of Pb and Zn exposures. Beside the inhibition of liver GPX activity, general increases of antioxidant enzyme activities in the tissues were recorded after metal exposures. This investigation emphasizes the oxidative stress in O. niloticus caused by Pb, and adaptation of the organisms to the changes in enzyme activities.  相似文献

Limited data are available describing the aquatic toxicity of molybdenum in freshwater environments, making it difficult to assess the aquatic risk to freshwater organisms. In order to increase available information on the aquatic toxicity of molybdenum, a 96-h LC50 test with the oligochaete Tubifex tubifex and an 85-day development test using brown trout, Salmo trutta, were conducted. The T. tubifex test resulted in an LC50 value of 2782 mg/L. No adverse effects were observed on brown trout survival or length in the concentrations tested, however an IC10 value for growth (wet weight) was determined to be 202 mg/L. Whole body fish tissue concentrations for molybdenum increased in all treatment concentrations tested, although bioconcentration factors decreased at greater exposure concentrations, and ranged from 0.13 at an exposure concentration of 20 mg/L to 0.04 at an exposure of 1247 mg/L. A body burden of 26.0 mg/kg was associated with reduced wet weight.  相似文献

Heavy metal are often added to animal fodder and accumulate in the soils with swine manure. In this study, heavy metal (Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, As and Cr) concentrations were determined in agricultural soils irrigated with swine manure in Jiangxi Province, China. Results showed that the average concentrations of Cu, Zn, As and Cr (32.8, 93.7, 21.3 and 75.8 mg/kg, respectively) were higher than the background values, while Pb and Cd (15.2 and 0.090 mg/kg, respectively) were lower than the background values. Contamination factors \(\left( {C_{f}^{i}} \right)\) indicated that they were generally moderate for Cu, Zn, As and Cr and generally low for Pb and Cd. The contamination degree (C d ) was calculated to be 7.5–10.0 indicating a moderate degree of contamination. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicated that the soils were unpolluted with Zn, Cd and Pb, while unpolluted to moderately pollute with Cr, Cu and As. The single ecological risk factor \(\left( {E_{r}^{i}} \right)\) revealed that the six heavy metals all belonged to low ecological risk. The ecological risk indices suggested that all the sampling sites were at low risk level.  相似文献

The lignicolous macrofungus Perenniporia fraxinea has drawn increased attention due to its role as a pathogen of ornamentals in urban sites. The present study investigated the bioaccumulation of heavy metals by P. fraxinea. Sporophores were collected from urban and suburban areas in Pavia (Northern Italy) and analyzed for metals content (Cd, Hg, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, after microwave acidic digestion. On the basis of the obtained results the potential bioaccumulation capability of P. fraxinea was investigated. The isolates were grown in a culture medium enriched with different concentrations of Cd and Hg, chosen as probes of environmental pollution, and Cu for comparison. As P. fraxinea grows in the presence of Cd, Hg and Cu, it seems to be a potential tool in environmental monitoring.  相似文献

Background The Florida Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program delivers evidence-based home visiting services to over 1400 families each year. Home visitors are integral in providing resources for families to promote healthy pregnancy, child development, family wellness, and self-sufficiency. Due to the nature of this work, home visitors experience work-related pressures and stressors that can impact staff well-being and retention. Objectives The purpose of this study was to understand primary sources of work-related stress experienced by home visitors, subsequent effects on their engagement with program participants, and to learn of coping mechanisms used to manage stress. Methods In 2015, Florida MIECHV program evaluators conducted ten focus groups with 49 home visitors during which they ranked and discussed their top sources of work-related stress. Qualitative analysis was conducted to identify emergent themes in work-related stressors and coping/supports. Results Across all sites, the burden of paperwork and data entry were the highest ranked work-related stressors perceived as interfering with home visitors’ engagement with participants. The second-highest ranked stressors included caseload management, followed by a lack of resources for families, and dangerous environments. Home visitors reported gratification in their helping relationships families, and relied on coworkers or supervisors as primary sources of workplace support along with self-care (e.g. mini-vacations, recreation, and counseling). Conclusions for practice Florida MIECHV home visitors across all ten focus groups shared similar work-related stressors that they felt diminished engagement with program participants and could impact participant and staff retention. In response, Florida MIECHV increased resources to support home visitor compensation and reduce caseloads, and obtained a competitive award from HRSA to implement a mindfulness-based stress reduction training statewide.  相似文献

Purpose

Inter-individual variation in median plasma copeptin is associated with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus, progression of chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular events. In this study, we examined whether 24-h urine osmolality was associated with plasma copeptin and whether increasing daily water intake could impact circulating plasma copeptin.

Methods

This trial was a prospective study conducted at a single investigating center. Eighty-two healthy adults (age 23.6 ± 2.9 years, BMI 22.2 ± 1.5 kg/m2, 50% female) were stratified based upon habitual daily fluid intake volumes: arm A (50–80% of EFSA dietary reference values), arm B (81–120%), and arm C (121–200%). Following a baseline visit, arms A and B increased their water intake to match arm C for a period of 6 consecutive weeks.

Results

At baseline, plasma copeptin was positively and significantly associated with 24-h urine osmolality (p = 0.002) and 24-h urine specific gravity (p = 0.003) but not with plasma osmolality (p = 0.18), 24-h urine creatinine (p = 0.09), and total fluid intake (p = 0.52). Over the 6-week follow-up, copeptin decreased significantly from 5.18 (3.3;7.4) to 3.90 (2.7;5.7) pmol/L (p = 0.012), while urine osmolality and urine specific gravity decreased from 591 ± 206 to 364 ± 117 mOsm/kg (p < 0.001) and from 1.016 ± 0.005 to 1.010 ± 0.004 (p < 0.001), respectively.

Conclusions

At baseline, circulating levels of copeptin were positively associated with 24-h urine concentration in healthy young subjects with various fluid intakes. Moreover, this study shows, for the first time, that increased water intake over 6 weeks results in an attenuation of circulating copeptin.

Background

Given mounting evidence for adverse effects from excess manganese exposure, it is critical to understand host factors, such as genetics, that affect manganese metabolism.

Methods

Archived blood samples, collected from 332 Mexican women at delivery, were analyzed for manganese. We evaluated associations of manganese with functional variants in three candidate iron metabolism genes: HFE [hemochromatosis], TF [transferrin], and ALAD [δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase]. We used a knockout mouse model to parallel our significant results as a novel method of validating the observed associations between genotype and blood manganese in our epidemiologic data.

Results

Percentage of participants carrying at least one copy of HFE C282Y, HFE H63D, TF P570S, and ALAD K59N variant alleles was 2.4%, 17.7%, 20.1%, and 6.4%, respectively. Percentage carrying at least one copy of either C282Y or H63D allele in HFE gene was 19.6%. Geometric mean (geometric standard deviation) manganese concentrations were 17.0 (1.5) μg/l. Women with any HFE variant allele had 12% lower blood manganese concentrations than women with no variant alleles (β = -0.12 [95% CI = -0.23 to -0.01]). TF and ALAD variants were not significant predictors of blood manganese. In animal models, Hfe-/- mice displayed a significant reduction in blood manganese compared with Hfe+/+ mice, replicating the altered manganese metabolism found in our human research.

Conclusions

Our study suggests that genetic variants in iron metabolism genes may contribute to variability in manganese exposure by affecting manganese absorption, distribution, or excretion. Genetic background may be critical to consider in studies that rely on environmental manganese measurements.

As a commonly used phthalate compound, di(n-butyl) phthalate (DBP) is an emerging group of polyvinyl chloride plasticizers. The acute toxicity of DBP has been extensively studied using the aquatic indicator organism, Daphnia magna. However, little is known about chronic and transgenerational toxicity of DBP. In this study, acute LC50 values were 3.04 mg/L (24 h) and 2.55 mg/L (48 h). Chronic toxicity tests in the case of maternal exposure to DBP revealed that DBP had negligible effects on growth and reproduction of F3 generation of D. magna, although the growth rate of body length and the intrinsic rate of increase were prominently reduced, to a pretty small extent. At specific concentrations, DBP generated beneficial effects on the parental generation of D. magna and no obvious impacts on the F1 generation. This study showed that maternal exposure to DBP did not cause any transgenerational effects on D. magna.  相似文献

Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) contaminations are the well reported and alarming issues of various contaminated smelting and mining sites all over the world, especially in China. The present hydroponic study was to assess the capacity of Vetiveria zizanioides for Sb, As and their interactive accumulations. The novelty of the present research is this that the potential of V. zizanioides for Sb and As alone and their interactive accumulation are unaddressed. This is the first report about the interactive co-accumulation of Sb and As in V. zizanioides. Highest applied Sb and As contaminations significantly inhibited the plant growth. Applied Sb and As alone significantly increased their concentrations in the roots/shoot of V. zizanioides. While co-contamination of Sb and As steadily increased their concentrations, in the plant. The co-contamination of Sb and As revealed a positive correlation between the two, as they supplemented the uptake and accumulation of each other. The overall translocation (TF) and bioaccumulation factors (BF) of Sb in V. zizanioides, were 0.75 and 4. While the TF and BF of As in V. zizanioides, were 0.86 and 10. V. zizanioides proved as an effective choice for the phytoremediation and ecosystem restoration of Sb and As contaminated areas.  相似文献

Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure is associated with negative health outcomes. Changes in DNA methylation level may be an important mechanism through which air pollution can induce its effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between DNA methylation in blood and personally measured TRAP exposure. Global DNA methylation in whole blood was analyzed with HPLC in a population of 55 healthy adults (average age 41 years). TRAP was assessed for each participant with a portable aethalometer measuring black carbon (BC). Exposure measurements were collected during one typical working week. These data were used in combination with ambient levels measured at a reference site to derive subchronic BC exposure. Urinary trans,trans-muconic acid (t,t-MA), a metabolite of benzene, was used as an internal proxy of traffic exposure. DNA methylation levels were associated with short- and subchronic BC exposure. An IQR increase in BC exposure on lag 24 h (477 ng/m3), lag 48 h (491 ng/m3), lag 1 week (314 ng/m3) and subchronic exposure (618 ng/m3) were associated with a decrease in DNA methylation levels of respectively 0.0020% (??0.0040 to ??0.0001, p?=?0.047), 0.0028% (??0.0054 to ??0.0001, p?=?0.043), 0.0024% (??0.0043 to ??0.0005, p?=?0.019), and 0.025% (??0.048 to ??0.0015, p?=?0.044). In addition, an IQR increase in t,t-MA (0.135 mg/l) was associated with a 0.0021% (??0.0033 to ??0.0008, p?=?0.0019) decrease in global DNA methylation levels. Analysis of a panel of cytokines in blood samples failed to demonstrate an association between inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers and TRAP or DNA methylation. In a panel of healthy adults, we found negative associations between total DNA methylation and markers of TRAP exposure. Considering that change in DNA methylation concentration is a biological marker connecting environmental and lifestyle exposures and disease development trajectories, our results warrant further study.  相似文献

Three representative species of Cyprinidae fishes (Aristichthys nobilis, Ctenopharyngodon idellus, and Cyprinus carpio), which are abundant in Chinese surface waters, were studied to determine their sensitivity to copper (Cu) in acute exposures. We first performed acute toxicity tests to determine the Cu LC50 value for each species in water with varying characteristics. The biotic ligand model (BLM) was then calibrated using the toxicity data for these species together with binding properties specific to Cu. The BLM calibration involved the calculation of the level of Cu accumulation in the gills that resulted in 50% lethality (i.e., LA50). The LA50 values for A. nobilis, C. idellus and C. carpio were 5.16, 11.60 and 9.00 nmol g?1. The model calibrated to these data was improved by adjusting the Cu-proton exchange constant (pK CuHA-A) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to values of 1.84 and 4.67E-3 mol g?1, respectively. The calibrated Cu-BLM was validated for these three common fish species by comparing predicted and observed LC50 values, which were in agreement to within a factor of 2. The results of this study provide an important contribution to ecological risk assessment and establishment of water quality criteria for Cu in China.  相似文献
