1. Thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine status of 'low-income-group' mothers and their newborn infants was assessed by analysing paired samples of maternal and umbilical cord blood for erythrocyte transketolase (EC 2.2.1.1) (ETK), erythrocyte glutathione reductase (EC 1.6.4.2) (EGR), and erythrocyte aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1) (EAA) activities. 2. The vitamin status of the infants was better than that of the mothers. 3. Most of the mothers and some of the infants had biochemical evidence of thiamin and riboflavin deficiency. 4. The pregnant women had a higher EAA activity and also higher stimulation with pyridoxal-5-phosphate than the non-pregnant women of the same community. 5. There was a significant correlation between maternal and umbilical blood samples for ETK and EGR activities, but not for EAA activity or any of the coenzyme stimulation tests.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine deficiencies at admission to an acute hospital. One hundred and twenty adult patients were selected at random from those admitted via the Accident and Emergency department over 3 days. Comparisons were made with a group of 80 healthy blood donors sequentially attending a local transfusion centre. The alcohol intake of 500 patients admitted sequentially via the same Accident and Emergency department was also assessed. Erythrocyte transketolase (ETK), glutathione reductase (EGR) and aspartate aminotransferase (EAA) coenzyme activation assays were used to determine thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine deficiencies. The prevalences of deficiency states in the inpatient group were 21, 2.7 and 32% for thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine deficiencies respectively with 49.2% being deficient in one or more vitamin. The mean alcohol intake in the group of patients in whom this was assessed was 9.7 units per week compared with 10 units per week amongst blood donors.  相似文献

Riboflavin status of solely breast-fed (SBF) infants aged 1-6 months (study 1) and solely or partially breast-fed (PBF) and weaned infants aged 6-24 months (study 2) was examined by the erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation test. Maternal riboflavin status and milk riboflavin content were also measured in study 1. Riboflavin status of the infants was significantly superior to that of their mothers. However, 35 per cent of SBF infants examined suffered from biochemical riboflavin deficiency as judged by the glutathione reductase test. Supplementary feeding of 6-8-month-old infants and weaning of older infants had positive effect on riboflavin status. There was no obvious relationship between riboflavin status and anthropometric status. Milk riboflavin concentration was comparable or only slightly lower than values reported for Western women, despite marked deficiency in the mothers.  相似文献

The restricted diets of patients with chronic renal insufficiency (CRI) can lead to inadequate intake of some vitamins. We studied thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine nutritional status of CRI subjects on unrestricted or low-protein diet. Results show that riboflavin status is inadequate even before the beginning of the follow up and worsens with time for both groups, while thiamin and pyridoxine status becomes inadequate in some patients after a long period on the low-protein diet. Water-soluble vitamin supplements could improve the nutritional status of CRI patients on protein-restricted diet.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to examine the vitamin D and calcium status of mothers and their newborns. METHODS: The intakes of vitamin D and calcium were determined prenatally in 121 women including 33 Caucasians, 51 Inuits, and 37 Native Indians, living in the Inuvik zone of the Northwest Territories. Plasma concentrations of 25-(OH)-D and calcium were also measured in mothers as well as in their offspring at delivery. RESULTS: The daily mean vitamin D intake of native mothers, including Inuits and Indians, with (8.1+/-5.5 microg) and without supplements (3.4+/-2.5 microg) was significantly lower than that of non-native mothers (13.2+/-5.9 microg and 5.8+/-4.3 microg, respectively). According to the predicted prevalence of low vitamin D intake, there existed a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency without supplementation in both native (88.6% vs 48.4%) and non-native (63.5% vs. 15.1%) mothers. The trend for calcium intakes with and without supplementation was similar to vitamin D intake. At the point of delivery, the plasma levels of 25-(OH)-D were lower in native mothers (50.1 19.3 nmol/L) and their offspring (34.2+/-13.1 nmol/L) than their counterparts (59.8+/-29.4 nmol/L and 41.4+/-23.5 nmol/L, respectively). Its plasma levels in newborn infants averaged only 67% of their mothers. None of these infants showed clinical evidence of vitamin D deficiency. In fact, their plasma calcium levels were significantly higher than their mothers. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma 25-(OH)-D concentrations of 60 to 70% of maternal levels may represent a "normal" range for newborn infants. However, a supplementation in native northern Canadian mothers during pregnancy and in their neonates during infancy may have a role to play in the prevention of vitamin D deficiency.  相似文献

The analysis of early interactions between the newborn infant and his mother has been conducted by putting an emphasis on their components, their rhythm and their development in time. Ten films, involving observation of eye to eye contact sequences with 42 mother-child couples, were analyzed. An analysis method has been adopted, in which a parallel between the child's communication behavior, essentially his visual activity, and the mother's communication behavior, is constantly drawn. 7 headings permit to analyze the mother's activities directed toward the child. The extreme variability of interaction patterns during the first week of life has been shown clearly. Specific contact modes seem to be favored by some mothers, while for others, all communication modalities are always present and are building on one another in true' “chain” interactions. The mother's role and the child's role have been commented upon, with particular emphasis on the activity of the child, who is capable, through his gaze, to initiate communication channels in the mother.  相似文献

The vitamin B6 nutritue of breast-fed infants was evaluated by vitamin B6 intake, plasma pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) concentration, and growth patterns during the infants' first 6 mo of age. Vitamin B6 intakes of 47 healthy, term infants were significantly correlated with four levels of maternal vitamin B6 supplements: 2.5, 4.0, 7.5, or 10.0 mg pyridoxine (PN) HCl/d and met the B6 Adequate Intake (AI, 1998) of 0.1 mg/d for infants 0 to 6 mo. Only infants whose mothers received 10.0 mg PN x HCl/d exceeded or met the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA, 1989) of 0.3 mg vitamin B6/d from 4 to 6 mo of age. Plasma PLP concentrations of infants, measured at 1, 4, and 6 mo of age paralleled their mother's vitamin B6 intake. Most infants showed normal growth. The findings indicated that a maternal PN x HCl supplement of 2.5 mg/d provided an adequate amount of vitamin B6 in breast milk (0.15 mg/d) for the vitamin B6 status parameters and the growth of breast-fed infants.  相似文献

The term 'optimum nutrition' has evolved from a perceived need to base recommendations for nutrient intakes firmly in the context of function. It follows that 'optimum nutritional status' for individual nutrients should be defined in terms of biochemical or physiological markers having some functional value but also showing an appropriate relationship to nutrient intake. The present short review considers the current position regarding such markers for riboflavin, pyridoxine and niacin. It is concluded that whilst there are several biochemical measures which respond to changes in intake of each of these vitamins, no single measure is wholly satisfactory as a marker of optimum status.  相似文献

The relationship between riboflavin and pyridoxine status was studied in 40 patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and 12 normal children by measuring activation coefficients of erythrocyte glutathione reductase (EGRAC) and aspartate transaminase (ASTAC). Prevalence of riboflavin deficiency was significantly lower in SCD (42.5%) than in control subjects (83%) and there was less pyridoxine deficiency in SCD (10.3%) than control subjects (54.5%). Aspartate transaminase (AST) activities in SCD patients were double those in control subjects. Pyridoxine status of patients, but not of control subjects, was directly affected by riboflavin status as judged from significant correlations between EGRAC and both AST activity and ASTAC. Poor riboflavin status in patients may be restricting availability of pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) due to combined effects of enhanced PLP requirements and effects of poor riboflavin status on the synthesis of PLP by pyridoxine phosphate oxidase (PPO). PPO activity was no different in the two groups.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the nutritional status for thiamin (vitamin B1) and riboflavin (vitamin B2) in an adult Mediterranean population, in order to identify patterns of intake, groups at risk for deficiency and factors that might influence this risk. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in Andalusia, a western Mediterranean region in southern Spain. Nutrient intakes were studied in a random sample of 3390 subjects (1746 men, 1644 women) who were between 25 and 60 years of age. Blood samples were obtained for biochemical assays in a random subsample of 372 subjects (181 men, 191 women). Food consumption was assessed by 48 h recall. Vitamin B1 and B2 were measured as erythrocyte transketolase and as erythrocyte glutathione reductase activation coefficients, respectively. Energy and vitamin intakes were significantly higher in men than in women. Intakes were below two-thirds of the recommended dietary allowance for vitamin B1 in 7.80 % of the men and 4.50 % of the woman, and were below this level for vitamin B2 in 18.00 % of the men and 11.70 % of the women. Age, educational level, alcohol use and smoking were also associated with differences in the intake of these nutrients. Biochemical analyses showed that vitamin B1 and B2 status was deficient in 6.40 and 5.30 % of the population, respectively. Although factors such as gender, age, level of education, drinking and smoking can have an effect on the risk of inadequate intake of these nutrients, these factors did not affect biochemical indices of nutritional status in the present study.  相似文献

The purpose of this pilot study was to assess neurological function in newborn infants born to mothers working in citrus orchards in Northern Thailand for a period in excess of one year where pesticide applications average 35 times a year. Forty-one infants from uncomplicated term births at the community hospital in Fang, Thailand, were given neurological evaluations during the first four days of life. This was a cross-sectional study in which nine mothers worked in citrus orchards and 32 mothers did not. Examiners were not given the exposure history of the mothers. Twelve infants--five of them born to mothers from citrus orchards--had examinations demonstrating abnormal muscle tone. Using logistic regression, the final model showed that maternal citrus grove exposure and anesthesia use were significant predictors (p < 0.05) of abnormal muscle tone with adjusted odds ratios of 9.82 (CI = 1.42, 68.07) and 5.99 (CI = 1.003, 35.85) for exposure and anesthesia respectively.  相似文献

A cross-sectional investigation on maternal and umbilical blood lead levels in an urban area, an industrial town and a rural area of middle China is reported. Blood samples from 89 mothers during delivery, from the umbilical cords and from 105 non-pregnant women were collected. Self-administered questionnaires including the medical history and the pregnancy-related complaints were performed. After acid digestion, the whole blood lead levels were determined by a 180-80 flame atomic absorption spectrometer. The geometric mean for lead levels in blood of non-pregnant women was 66.9 microg/l (range: 25.0-201.0 microg/l) in the urban, 66.9 microg/l (range: 30.5-198.8 microg/l) in the industrial town, and 53.3 microg/l (range: 16.0-170.5 microg/l) in the rural area. The geometric mean of lead levels in blood of pregnant women at delivery both in the rural area (74.4 microg/l, range: 35.2-245.6 microg/l) and industrial town (65.9 micro/l, range: 20.0-172.0 microg/l) were higher than in the urban region (54.3 microg/l, range: 27.9-187.0 microg/l; p < 0.05). Compared with non-pregnant women at the same area, the blood lead levels of pregnant women was lower in urban (p < 0.05), but higher in rural areas (p < 0.05). The geometric mean for lead level in umbilical cord blood was significantly higher in rural (84.1 microg/l, range: 28.0-185.0 microg/l) than in the other areas (53.5 microg/l, range: 23.5-156.7 microg/l in the urban; 60.1 microg/l, range: 12.5-168.3 microg/l in the industrial town). The total geometric mean for lead level in cord blood was 69.0 microg/l (range: 12.5-185.0 microg/l), and 17.8% samples were above the blood lead threshold of health concern (> or =100 microg/l) for children (CDC, 1991), but the body weight and length of newborn babies have not been affected. The correlation between maternal and cord blood was 0.6805 (p < 0.01). Most of the pregnant women did not take the calcium supplements recommended during pregnancy. In conclusion, there were some lead burdens on both the mothers and their newborn babies in these areas. All possible measures should be taken to reduce the environmental lead exposure. It is also crucial that maternal nutrient intake, particularly calcium, should be sufficient.  相似文献
