Purpose
The purpose of this study was to develop a family of 700-nm zwitterionic pentamethine indocyanine near-infrared fluorophores that would permit dual-channel image-guided surgery.Procedures
Three complementary synthetic schemes were used to produce novel zwitterionic chemical structures. Physicochemical, optical, biodistribution, and clearance properties were compared to Cy5.5, a conventional pentamethine indocyanine now used for biomedical imaging.Results
ZW700-1a, ZW700-1b, and ZW700-1c were synthesized, purified, and analyzed extensively in vitro and in vivo. All molecules had extinction coefficients ≥199,000 M?1 cm?1, emission ≥660 nm, and stability ≥99 % after 24 h in warm serum. In mice, rats, and pigs, ≥80 % of the injected dose was completely eliminated from the body via renal clearance within 4 h. Either alone or conjugated to a tumor targeting ligand, ZW700-1a permitted dual-channel, high SBR, and simultaneous imaging with 800-nm NIR fluorophores using the FLARE® imaging system.Conclusions
Novel 700-nm zwitterionic NIR fluorophores enable dual-NIR image-guided surgery.2.

Intracranial abscesses are rare and life-threatening conditions that typically originate from direct extension from nearby structures, hematogenous dissemination or following penetrating cerebral trauma or neurosurgery.Findings
A 36-year-old male presented to our emergency department with complaints of left eye swelling, headache and drowsiness. On physical exam, the patient was febrile and his left upper eyelid was markedly swollen with fluctuance and drainage. Maxillofacial computed tomography was obtained to evaluate for orbital pathology but revealed bifrontal brain abscesses.Conclusions
Brain abscesses should be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients who present with the classic triad of headache, fever and neurological deficit.3.

Delirium Index decreased over time in both groups, as did the administered dose of benzodiazepines. Clinical improvement was similar in both treatment arms. No side effects were noted in the olanzapine group, whereas the use of haloperidol was associated with extrapyramidal side effects.Conclusions
Olanzapine is a safe alternative to haloperidol in delirious critical care patients, and may be of particular interest in patients in whom haloperidol is contraindicated.4.

Purpose
The experimental investigation of an optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor for biomedical application is described. The FBG sensor can be used to measure sound pressure and temperature rise simultaneously in biological tissues exposed to ultrasound. The theoretical maximum values that can be measured with the FBG sensor are 73.0 MPa and 30 °C.Methods
In this study, measurement of sound pressure up to 5 MPa was performed at an ultrasound frequency of 2 MHz. A maximum temperature change of 6 °C was measured in a tissue-mimicking material.Results
Values yielded by the FBG sensor agreed with those measured using a thermocouple and a hydrophone.Conclusion
Since this sensor is used to monitor the sound pressure and temperature simultaneously, it can also be used for industrial applications, such as ultrasonic cleaning of semiconductors under controlled temperatures.6.

Purpose
Multiple features have been described for assessing inflammation in Crohn’s disease (CD) in MR enterography, but have not been validated in perianal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Retrospectively, we studied which MRI features are valuable in assessing proctitis.Materials and methods
CD patients (≥18 years) who underwent colonoscopy (reference standard) and perianal fistula MRI within 8 weeks were included. Seventeen MRI features were blindly scored by three observers and correlated to endoscopy (regression analysis). Reproducibility (multirater kappa, intraclass correlation coefficient) was determined for all three observer pairs. MRI features were considered relevant when significantly correlated to endoscopy for ≥2 observers, and reproducibility was ≥0.40 for ≥2 observer pairs.Results
Perianal MRI of 58 CD patients were included. Wall thickness, rectal mural fat, creeping fat, and size of mesorectal lymph nodes showed a significant correlation with endoscopy for ≥2 observers (p = 0.000–0.023, p = 0.011–0.172, p = 0.007–0.011 and p = 0.000–0.005, respectively) with a kappa/intraclass correlation coefficient of ≥0.60 for ≥2 observer pairs. Perimural T2 signal and perimural enhancement significantly correlated to endoscopy (all p values ≤0.05) for all three observers and the reproducibility was ≥0.40 for ≥2 observer pairs. Mural T2 signal and degree and pattern of T1 enhancement showed significant correlation to endoscopy for two observers, but with poor to moderate reproducibility.Conclusion
Wall thickness, mural fat, and mesorectal features (perimural T2 signal, perimural enhancement, creeping fat, and size of mesorectal lymph nodes) had significant correlation to endoscopy and were reproducible in diagnosing proctitis. Some established luminal features in MRE were considered not useful.8.

Blinded, case-note review of children and adolescents with ICD 10 diagnosis of psychiatric disorders on psychotropic medication was conducted. Data on demography, illness, and treatment was analyzed with univariate and multivariate techniques.Results
Proscribing non-pharmacological interventions (OR = 4.7) and pro re nata medication (OR = 3.3), increased the risk of polypharmacy. Prescribing physical restraint reduced the risk of receiving multiple medications (OR = 0.3).Conclusion

Aims
Create an educational program in chronic pain (EPCP).Material and methods
We used a four-step process to create the EPCP tailored to patient’s needs.Results
Five groups of patients can benefit from the program annually. Based on their own assessment, patients stated that their knowledge of chronic pain improved between 2.8 to 24%. The satisfaction with the EPCP was 8.67/10.Conclusion
Our EPCP helps patients gain and maintain the skills they need to best manage their lives with a chronic pain.10.

Introduction
The purpose of this review is to present the current and emerging treatment alternatives for Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), emphasizing the most recent use of idebenone and stem cells or gene therapy.Methods
A comprehensive literature review was performed at the PubMed database regarding the various treatment modalities for LHON.Results
Treatment modalities for LHON include nutritional supplements, activators of mitochondrial biogenesis, brimonidine, and symptomatic and supportive treatment, but nowadays attention is being paid to idebenone and gene therapy or stem cells.Conclusion
The treatment of LHON remains challenging, given the nature of the disease and its prognosis.11.
Background
The application of ear acupuncture can contribute to a reduction of acute pain. Data on the application of ear acupuncture following oral surgery in odontology is insufficient.Objective
This study investigated the effectiveness of ear acupuncture as an auxiliary analgesic treatment in addition to local anesthesia for operative tooth removal.Methods
In this prospective open non-randomized pilot study (in accordance with the CONSORT publication) 2 cohorts of 50 patients each with the indications for an operative tooth removal either with or without the application of ear acupuncture in addition to local anesthesia with articain were observed. Patients were allocated to the groups according to their preference. Pain intensity while resting and while chewing was recorded as the primary parameter for a period of 10 days. The secondary parameters were the subjective experience of anxiety and symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness and nausea.Results
The two groups did not differ significantly with respect to demographic variables or the use of local anesthetics. At the various measurement intervals, pain intensity while resting or chewing differed significantly between the two groups (ANOVA, p = 0.004, p = 0.007, respectively). Furthermore, the experience of anxiety (ANOVA, p = 0.0001), the number of patients taking analgesics (χ2-test, p = 0.017) and the total postoperative consumption of analgesics (t-test, 0.001) revealed significant differences. In both groups the numerical rating scales (NRS) for postoperative headaches, dizziness and nausea were low.Discussion and conclusion
Despite a potential bias and methodological limitations of the study design, the results of this investigation suggest that ear acupuncture influences the experience of pain and anxiety in the postoperative period after tooth removal. As a treatment method with low adverse effects ear acupuncture can contribute to postoperative pain control, especially in patients with preoperative anxiety.12.

Purpose
Statistical shape analysis of anatomical structures plays an important role in many medical image analysis applications such as understanding the structural changes in anatomy in various stages of growth or disease. Establishing accurate correspondence across object populations is essential for such statistical shape analysis studies.Methods
In this paper, we present an entropy-based correspondence framework for computing point-based correspondence among populations of surfaces in a groupwise manner. This robust framework is parameterization-free and computationally efficient. We review the core principles of this method as well as various extensions to deal effectively with surfaces of complex geometry and application-driven correspondence metrics.Results
We apply our method to synthetic and biological datasets to illustrate the concepts proposed and compare the performance of our framework to existing techniques.Conclusions
Through the numerous extensions and variations presented here, we create a very flexible framework that can effectively handle objects of various topologies, multi-object complexes, open surfaces, and objects of complex geometry such as high-curvature regions or extremely thin features.14.

Purpose
Lack of annotated training data hinders automatic recognition and prediction of surgical activities necessary for situation-aware operating rooms. We propose using knowledge transfer to compensate for data deficit and improve prediction.Methods
We used two approaches to extract and transfer surgical process knowledge. First, we encoded semantic information about surgical terms using word embedding. Secondly, we passed knowledge between different clinical datasets of neurosurgical procedures using transfer learning.Results
The combination of two methods provided 22% improvement of activity prediction. We also made several pertinent observations about surgical practices based on the results of the performed transfer.Conclusion
Word embedding boosts learning process. Transfer learning was shown to be more effective than a simple combination of data, especially for less similar procedures.15.

Introduction
The study objective was to evaluate the intraocular pressure (IOP) and medication-lowering effect of 2 second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stents in eyes with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) on one preoperative medication.Methods
Fifty-seven qualified phakic eyes with OAG on 1 medication, preoperative medicated IOP of 18–30 mmHg, and preoperative unmedicated (post-washout) IOP of 22–38 mmHg underwent implantation of 2 second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stents in a standalone procedure. Evaluations included IOP, best-corrected visual acuity, medication use, fundus and slit lamp examinations, visual field, cup to disc ratio, pachymetry, and complications and interventions. Subjects have been followed for 18 months, and follow-up is ongoing.Results
At Month 12 postoperative, 100% of eyes had achieved an IOP reduction ≥20% (100% had IOP ≤18 mmHg and 67% had IOP ≤15 mmHg) without medication versus preoperative unmedicated IOP, and 75% had IOP reduction ≥20% without medication versus preoperative medicated IOP. The Month 12 mean unmedicated IOP had decreased by 42%, to 14.2 ± 1.9 mmHg vs 24.4 ± 1.3 mmHg preoperatively, and this reduction was maintained through 18 months (14.4 ± 2.1 mmHg). A high safety profile was observed.Conclusion
In this prospective, open-label, single-arm study, the standalone implantation of two second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stents in OAG patients on 1 preoperative medication resulted in IOP reduction to ≤15 mmHg and elimination of medication through 18 months, with favorable safety.Trial Registration

Purpose
Some patients develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after sustained virological response (SVR) to interferon therapy for chronic hepatitis C (CH-C). The aim of this study was to examine the linkage between liver elasticity and the presence/absence of HCC in patients after SVR.Methods
We enrolled 42 patients who underwent real-time mapping shear wave elastography (SWE) after SVR to interferon therapy for CH-C. Of the 42 patients, six had HCC and 36 did not. We retrospectively compared the elasticity modulus and other clinical parameters between patients with and without HCC.Results
Elasticity modulus measured by SWE, age, and serum albumin was significantly different between patients with and without HCC. Age, Fibrosis-4 index, serum gamma-globulin, total protein, and albumin levels were significantly correlated with the elasticity modulus. Areas under receiver operating characteristic curves of elasticity modulus, gamma-globulin, and age for the presence of HCC were 0.963, 0.888, and 0.778, respectively. In patients with an elasticity modulus ≥6.5 kPa, both sensitivity and specificity for the presence of HCC were 83.3 %.Conclusion
The study demonstrated the close linkage between the elasticity modulus measured by SWE and the presence of HCC in patients after SVR.18.

Background
Unexplained somatic symptoms are common among trauma survivors. The relationship between trauma and somatization appears to be mediated by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, only few studies have focused on what other psychological risk factors may predispose a trauma victim towards developing somatoform symptoms.Methods
The present paper examines the predictive value of PTSD severity, dissociation, negative affectivity, depression, anxiety, and feeling incompetent on somatization in a Danish sample of 169 adult men and women who were affected by a series of explosions in a firework factory settled in a residential area.Results
Negative affectivity and feelings of incompetence significantly predicted somatization, explaining 42% of the variance. PTSD was significant until negative affectivity was controlled for.Conclusion
Negative affectivity and feelings of incompetence significantly predicted somatization in the trauma sample whereas dissociation, depression, and anxiety were not associated with degree of somatization. PTSD as a risk factor was mediated by negative affectivity.20.
