The effects of two dosages (200 mg, 600 mg, placebo) of a cholinergic nootropic (WEB 1881 FU) were investigated in a visual spatial attention task. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used as a physiological measure of attention as they have previously been shown to be sensitive to allocation of attention to points in space. The typical enhancement of several peaks of the visual ERP due to attention was found in the present experiment. No systematic effect of the medication was revealed, suggesting that the effects of WEB 1881 FU do not extend to early perceptual processes.  相似文献

Visual deficits in early and high level processing nodes have been documented in Parkinson's disease (PD). Non-motor high level visual integration deficits in PD seem to have a cortical basis independently of a low level retinal contribution. It is however an open question whether sensory and visual attention deficits can be separated in PD. Here, we have explicitly separated visual and attentional disease related patterns of performance, by using bias free staircase procedures measuring psychophysical contrast sensitivity across visual space under covert attention conditions with distinct types of cues (valid, neutral and invalid). This further enabled the analysis of patterns of dorsal-ventral (up-down) and physiological inter-hemispheric asymmetries. We have found that under these carefully controlled covert attention conditions PD subjects show impaired psychophysical performance enhancement by valid attentional cues. Interestingly, PD patients also show paradoxically increased visual homogeneity of spatial performance profiles, suggesting flattening of high level modulation of spatial attention. Finally we have found impaired higher level attentional modulation of contrast sensitivity in the visual periphery, where mechanisms of covert attention are at higher demands. These findings demonstrate a specific loss of attentional mechanisms in PD and a pathological redistribution of spatial mechanisms of covert attention.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by novel and well memorized non-verbal visual patterns were recorded over the right and left hemispheres from ten children with Specific Visual Cognitive Disability (SVCD) and ten matched Control subjects (C). ERPs of SVCD children were generally longer in latency (particularly N2) and decreased in amplitude (particularly P3) relative to the ERPs of Cs. No hemisphere differences were observed in the SVCD group, while the latency of N2 in the C group tended to be slightly shorter and the amplitude of P3 was significantly larger over the right than over the left hemisphere. The results are discussed in terms of deficits in visual learning and visual pattern analysis. The different hemispheric pattern in SVCD children as compared to Cs is suggested to be a symptom secondary to basic visual cognitive deficits.  相似文献

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a childhood disorder characterized by lack of sustained attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Children with ADHD have functional impairment occurring at multiple levels. In the present study, cognitive status was assessed using auditory event-related potentials (ERPs). Twenty ADHD children and 20 controls were recruited for the study and ERPs were recorded on a computerized evoked potential recorder, using the international 10-20 system of electrode placement. The ADHD children showed a statistically significant N200 latency prolongation and amplitude decrease compared with the controls; the latencies of the other waves, i.e. N100, P200, P300, were prolonged in the ADHD children but the difference versus the controls was statistically insignificant. Reaction time was significantly longer in the ADHD subjects as compared with the controls. The above findings are suggestive of dysfunctions in the discrimination of task-relevant stimuli and a slower motor response in ADHD children.  相似文献

Catecholamines and the covert orientation of attention in humans   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The role of brain catecholamines in covert orienting was tested in normal subjects using a cued reaction time paradigm which measures the directional engagement, disengagement and movement of attention. Droperidol and clonidine were administered intravenously to suppress central dopamine and noradrenaline transmission. Both drugs produced reductions in the cost of invalid cueing without change in the benefit of valid cueing suggesting that both noradrenaline and dopamine are involved in facilitating the disengagement of attention. These results are relevant to the slowed disengagement observed with parietal lesions in monkeys and humans since this region of the cortex associated with visuospatial analysis receives a dense innervation by both dopamine and noradrenaline projections in primates.  相似文献

Event-related potentials from a visual categorization task   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Investigation of the neural bases of human perceptual categorization is a continuously growing territory of visual sciences. Recently, several papers appeared on the cortical bases of human categorization performance, using functional brain imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). However, the cheaper commercially available laboratory tests are not always the best methods to study multiple aspects of visual categorization. In this study, we describe the electrophysiological correlates of natural scene categorization in humans. The subject's task was to decide whether briefly presented natural scenes contained animal or non-animal items. Analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) recorded during the categorization task, revealed more negative potentials for non-animal stimuli (NAS) in the time windows of 150-250 ms (N1) and 350-500 ms (N2), and more positive potentials for animal stimuli (AS) in the time window of 250-350 ms (P2). Our work provides an inexpensive noninvasive method to study both early perceptual and late phases of semantic information processing by recording ERPs during the categorization of natural scenes.  相似文献

We examined covert orienting attention in twenty patients with Parkinson's disease using Posner's reaction time (RT) method. Patients were divided according to the grade of severity (Hoehn and Yahr), the P1 group was grade I-II and P2 group grade II-IV. Each group of patients was compared with an equal number of age-matched controls. In controls, and in the less disabled younger P1 group, a significant RT difference was shown between "valid" and "crossed" conditions, that is, when the cue and target appeared in the same square or in equivalent squares in opposite visual fields. In the P2 group, however, there was no advantage of the "valid" over "crossed" conditions. Furthermore, the RT difference seen in controls between "valid" and "towards the fovea" or "away from the fovea" (conditions where cue and target were in adjacent squares) disappeared in the Parkinsonian groups. These results suggest that the covert shift of attention from initial focus to the cue is very weak, or does not occur in more disabled Parkinsonian patients, resulting in only a shift of attention to the target. In considering the elementary mental operations involved in covert orienting attention, this deficit may be attributable to a disturbance of moving attention.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated learning-related changes in auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) of Finnish-speaking 3-6-year-old children caused by learning French language. METHODS: Using an oddball paradigm, ERPs to sounds of French language were recorded in the two groups of healthy children: those who were learning French (experimental group) and those who were not learning any foreign language (control peers). RESULTS: When the children from the experimental group were exposed to the foreign language, they automatically developed French-specific memory traces that helped them to discriminate, categorize, and pronounce utterances of the new language as indicated by the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of the ERPs in a previous study. We found that the learning process was also reflected by changes in P3a and late difference negativity (LDN) responses. Unlike MMN and P3a, the LDN has been discovered relatively recently and its functional role remains unclear. Similarly, as the MMN magnitude increased during the learning process, an increase of the P3a (known to reflect the involuntary attention switching toward deviant stimuli) and LDN amplitudes was observed. The ERPs of the control peers did not change significantly over the test period. CONCLUSIONS: When phonemes of a foreign language are learned, this process is accompanied with the increase in the MMN, P3a, and LDN amplitudes in children. Though the functional significance of LDN remains to be further investigated, our results support its possible link to reorienting processes following distraction.  相似文献

Covert orientation of attention was studied in a group of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease and compared to a matched control group using a cued reaction time task which measured disengagement, covert movement and engagement of attention. Parkinson patients had an increased response latency and disengaged from attended locations more readily than controls. This impairment in the maintenance of attention in Parkinson's disease was comparable to that produced in a previous study by pharmacological blockade of brain catecholamines in normal subjects. It is suggested that an impairment in the maintenance of oriented attention may underlie some of the cognitive deficits reported in Parkinson's disease.  相似文献

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and contrast sensitivity (CS) were studied in patients affected by maculopathy. VEP delays and CS reduction were demonstrated in each affected eye. In distinction to patients affected by multiple sclerosis (MS), in maculopathy patients VEP latency is independent of the orientation of the grating stimulus. It is proposed that stimulating with more than one pattern orientation is useful in the differential diagnostic use of VEPs.  相似文献

The use of awake, fixating monkeys in neuroscience has allowed significant advances in understanding numerous brain functions. However, fixation is an active process, with the occurrence of incessant eye movements, including rapid ones called microsaccades. Even though microsaccades have been shown to be modulated by stimulus and cognitive processes in humans, it is not known to what extent these results are similar in monkeys or why they occur. Here, we analyzed the stimulus-, context-, and attention-related changes in microsaccades while monkeys performed a challenging visual attention task. The distributions of microsaccade times were highly stereotypical across thousands of trials in the task. Moreover, in epochs of the task in which animals anticipated the occurrence of brief stimulus probes, microsaccade frequency decreased to a rate of less than one movement per second even on long multisecond trials. These effects were explained by the observation that microsaccades occurring at the times of the brief probes were sometimes associated with reduced perceptual performance. Microsaccade directions also exhibited temporal modulations related to the attentional demands of the task, like earlier studies in humans, and were more likely to be directed toward an attended location on successfully performed trials than on unsuccessfully completed ones. Our results show that microsaccades in nonhuman primates are correlated with the allocation of stimulus-evoked and sustained covert attention. We hypothesize that involvement of the superior colliculus in microsaccade generation and attentional allocation contributes to these observations. More importantly, our results clarify the potential role of these eye movements in modifying behavior and neural activity.  相似文献

Reaction times and attention in Parkinson''s disease.   总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Ten patients with Parkinson's disease performed a simple reaction time task in which, on hearing a tone, they pressed a button with the left thumb. In the first experiment tones sometimes occurred unannounced and at other times were preceded (by between 0 and 3200 ms) by a warning signal. The second experiment was identical to the first except that the subject had simultaneously to perform a simple continuous task with his right hand. Patients had slower reaction times than controls under all circumstances. In general, however, the effect of a warning signal and the effect of a second task were the same for both groups. In the control group the effect of a warning signal depended on whether or not a second task was being performed. Specifically, the advantage of a warning signal for reaction time was lost after long intervals (greater than 200 ms) when a second task was being performed. Parkinson's disease patients lost this advantage even when they were not performing a second task. Animal studies have suggested that dopamine deficiency results in an increase in neural "noise" in the basal ganglia. The behavioural consequences of this may be that Parkinson's disease patients always perform as if they were carrying out another task at the same time. In contrast, their ability to benefit from a warning signal and to allocate attentional resources are unimpaired.  相似文献

Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded on subjects who discriminated the stimulus duration of two sequentially presented spots (S1 and S2). Four kinds of trials were included: short-duration match (S1 and S2 lasting 300 ms), short-duration conflict (S1 and S2 lasting 300 ms and 600 ms, respectively), long-duration match (S1 and S2 were 600 ms) and long-duration conflict (S1 and S2 were 600 ms and 900 ms, respectively). When S1 was equal to S2, components of P1, N1, P2, N2 and a delayed late positive component were recorded after the onset of S2. The other three negativities were elicited in both short and long duration conflict conditions. The three negative components peaked at 475, 600 and 900 ms in the short-duration condition, and they peaked at 805, 900 and 1200 ms in the long-duration condition. The first negativity was considered a visual mis-match negativity (vMMN), followed by a delayed N270 reflecting the conflict processing for duration in the brain. The last negativity, similar to N270, possibly reflects the second conflict processing activity evoked by stimulus offset.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to examine the nature of previously reported deficits in sustained attention and response inhibition in adults with the developmental disorder, phenylketonuria (PKU). METHODS: This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the performance of PKU adults (n=9) and a matched control group (n=9) on a visual Go-Nogo task. RESULTS: Comparison of behavioural measures between the PKU and control groups failed to reach statistical significance, yet analysis of the ERPs showed statistically significant amplitude reductions in the P1 and N1 components elicited following presentation of stimuli, and a reduction in the amplitude of the N2 component elicited following presentation of Nogo stimuli. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that adults with PKU, despite being continuously treated from birth, manifest subtle impairments in distinct aspects of information processing including early sensory processing of visually presented information, as well as impairments in inhibitory functions. SIGNIFICANCE: The results contribute to an understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms that are implicated in PKU and highlight the sensitivity of ERP techniques for the identification of the loci of information processing deficits in clinical groups.  相似文献

This study investigated inhibitory function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) by recording event-related brain potentials (ERPs) during a Go/NoGo task. Fourteen healthy volunteers and 13 patients with PD without dementia performed a cued continuous performance test that included Go and NoGo trials. The peak latency, amplitude, and topographic distributions of the ERPs to Go and NoGo stimuli were analyzed. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Kana Pick-out Test, and Verbal Fluency Test (VFT). Performances in the WCST and VFT were significantly impaired in the PD group as compared with the control group. The PD group had significantly higher rates of omission and commission errors during the ERP task. The ERP study found no differences in the latency and amplitude of the Go-P3 between the two groups. By contrast, the NoGo-P3 latency was significantly longer in the PD group than in the control group. The amplitudes of the NoGo-P3 and NoGo-N2 were also significantly smaller in the PD group than in the control group. The NoGo-P3 latency was significantly correlated with the Kana Pick-out Test and VFT scores. The NoGo-P3 amplitude was significantly correlated with the WCST and VFT scores, as well as with the number of commission errors. There were no significant correlations between the cognitive function tests and either the Go-P3 or NoGo-N2 measures. The behavioral and ERP data suggest that there is selective impairment of inhibitory function in PD and that this deficit may be related to impaired inhibitory executive function in the frontal lobe.  相似文献

The neural mechanisms supporting visuospatial orienting and focusing were investigated by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) in a cued, line-orientation discrimination task. Search arrays flashed randomly in the left or right visual field and were preceded by peripheral cues that varied in validity (valid or invalid, with 50% each) and size (large or small, with 50% each). Facilitation of response time was observed for valid trials, regardless of cue size. In contrast to previous cued search studies, however, small (i.e., more precise) cues were associated with delayed responses. Both the timing and the amplitudes of the early ERP components, P1 and N1, were modulated by attentional orienting, with valid trials eliciting a larger and later contralateral vP1 (ventral P1) and a smaller and later contralateral N1 compared to invalid trials. Attentional focusing modulated only the amplitudes of the P1 component, with precisely cued trials eliciting a larger dP1 (dorsal P1) than less precisely cued trials at both contralateral and ipsilateral sites. Thus, both attentional orienting and focusing modulate early stimulus processing stages that overlap in time, but with dissociable effects on the scalp distribution of these components, indicating possibly different underlying mechanisms. In addition, the results support the notion that voluntary and involuntary allocations of visuospatial attention are mediated by different underlying neural processes.  相似文献

Numerous studies have documented that expectancy-violating (EV) behavior (i.e., behavior that violates existing person impressions) elicits more effortful cognitive processing compared to expectancy-consistent (EC) behavior. Some studies also have shown that this effect is modulated by the valence of behavior, though this finding is inconsistent with some extant models of expectancy processes. The current research investigated whether the valence of EV information affects very rapid attentional processes thought to tag goal-relevant information for more elaborative processing at later stages. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants read depictions of behavior that either were consistent with or violated established impressions about fictitious characters. Consistent with predictions, a very early attention-related ERP component, the frontal P2, differentiated negative from positive EV behavior but was unaffected by the valence of EC behavior. This effect occurred much earlier in processing than has been demonstrated in prior reports of EV effects on neural response, suggesting that impression formation goals tune attention to information that might signal the need to modify existing impressions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study selective attention in schizophrenia by examining event-related potentials during a dichotic listening task with short interstimulus intervals (ISIs). DESIGN: Prospective study. PARTICIPANTS: Twelve patients with schizophrenia in remission and 12 age-matched controls with no history of psychiatric or neurological illness. INTERVENTIONS: Participants were asked to push a button in response to target stimuli in either ear. OUTCOME MEASURES: Reaction time, correct response rate and results of electroencephalography recorded at 3 regions: mean segmental amplitudes between 0 and 200 ms and between 200 and 400 ms after stimuli and processing negativity (Nd), measured by the negative area during these periods. RESULTS: Distinct slow-positive potentials for unattended stimuli, which were elicited in a task with long ISIs in a previous report, did not emerge in either group in this study. Although the 2 groups did not differ significantly in terms of Nd area, in the controls the mean segmental amplitude for attended standard stimuli was significantly greater than that in the patients with schizophrenia. CONCLUSIONS: Impairment of selective attention in patients with schizophrenia is related to a lack of ability to focus attention on attended task-relevant stimuli during a selective attention task with short ISI.  相似文献
