Ocular radiotherapy has considerably improved during the last 60 years. It allows very often, not only to save an eye, but also to maintain a useful function. But it is only one single element, although important, in our fight against intraocular tumors.     

Multiple conjunctival malignant melanomas (author's transl)]

5 1/2 years after excision of pigmented malignant melanoma which apparently arose in a nevus of the paralimbal bulbar conjunctiva, this 42-year-old male presented himself with a nonpigmented mass of the lid margin which also proved to be a malignant melanoma. "Acquired melanosis sine pigmento" was considered as a site of origin, but histopathologically there is more evidence that this melanoma arose in a non-pigmented compound nevus.

3 cases of lid basalioma with malignant course are described - in the first case with destruction of the eye-lids, in the second destruction of the orbit and nearby sinuses, and in the third with infiltration of the brain. Hence the necessity of early active treatment is shown. The diagnosis of the tumor and the degree of infiltration into healthy tissue must be made histologically - this is as important as the life-long follow-up of tumor patients.     

Primary malignant melanoma of the cornea (author's transl)]

In this communication, we present a case of malignant melanoma of the cornea, in an 80-year old female. The tumor, covering 3/4 of the cornea, had a lobulated appearance, pinkish colour with vascularization and pigment granules, in a few places. The limbal area was free of tumor. Histologic examination indicated that the melanoma was primary, of the epithelioid type, with a few areas of spindle type cells.

A high percentage of plastic keratoprosthesis is rejected again or intraocular infections occur because there is a cleft-like open junction between anterior chamber and lacrimal film. Only the ketratoprosthesis by Strampelli (1970) settles firmly in the cornea without the above risks, because the autogenous transplanted bone unites well with the grafted labial mucosa. 5 years of investigation have confirmed that glass ceramic Ceravital unites firmly with bones (Blencke et al. 1973, Strunz et al. 1977c, Bunte et al. 1977). For the osteo-keramo-keratoprosthesis Ceravital is used the same location as Dentin for the osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis. The new surgical method has the advantage that 1. toothless patients can be operated, 2. the anterior chamber cannot flatten because the ceramic disk has the same shape as the corneal surface, and 3. broader optical cylinders can be used, by which a widening of the visual field is achieved.

The authors report on local and general changes in dysgenesis mesodermalis iridis et corneae Rieger on the basis of own observations and literature survey. This genetically caused inhibitory deformation is outlined with regard to the differential diagnosis of other anomalies in the angle part of iris. The conservative and surgical therapeutic experiences of other authors are contrasted with our own.

General and special problems of keratoprosthetics are discussed with regard to experineces obtained from 38 prosthetic Cardona operations on 32 patients.     

Aicardi-syndrome (author's transl)]

The main features of Aicardi's syndrome are infantile spasms, defects of the corpus callosum, chorioretinopathy, mental subnormality, characteristic EEG changes, vertebral anomalies, microphthalmos and colobomata. The disease affects only the female sex. 2 cases are described from our own experience.     

The echography of ocular tumours and their microscopic architecture (author's transl)]

The echography of ocular tumours (7 malignant melanomas and 2 metastatic tumours) is presented in correlation with their microscopic architecture. A metastatic tumour presenting echographic characteristics typical of malignant melanoma was considered as such at the ultrasound test. All 7 malignant tumours were diagnosed through the ultrasound test, but it was impossible to foretell a predominant type of cell.
