In their work, pediatric acute care nurses may encounter traumatic events and be at risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This survey-based study examines the potential diagnosis of PTSD among nurses at a tertiary children's hospital with a Level 1 trauma center. Twenty-one percent of respondents had strong PTSD symptoms without significant difference between units. Nurses with potential PTSD had more comorbid symptoms of anxiety, depression, and burnout and were more often considering a career change. Furthermore, symptoms affected not only their work but also their personal lives. Future research should focus upon identifying pediatric nurses with PTSD to provide therapeutic interventions and reducing high-risk events and their potential impact.

This is a cross-cultural comparative study involving both quantitative and qualitative data analyses. This study examines sources of parental stress in the two neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) located in New Zealand and Japan and explores how cultural norms of NICU care environments influence parental stress-related experiences and nursing support. The three main sources of data collection were the following: a NICU staff interview, parental interview, and parental questionnaire survey, the PSS: NICU. Thirty-one pairs of parents in each NICU (N = 121) participated in this study. The differences between the two NICUs in terms of the NICU care environment and sources of parental stress within the NICU contexts were identified, highlighting NICU characteristics associated with the sources of stress in the two NICUs. Recognition of the norms of NICU care environments that may hinder parent-staff communication is an important element of NICU nursing practice.

Literature has shown that mothers whose babies are in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are at risk of experiencing postpartum depression (PPD). This study explored the relationship between PPD and perceived social support and its impact on maternal adaptation in mothers of new-borns hospitalized in NICUs. Participants were 252 mothers of infants in the NICU. An Individual Form, the Edinburgh PD Scale, the Postpartum Self Evaluation Questionnaire, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support were used for data collection. Mann Whitney U test and Pearson Correlation were used for data analysis. Breastfeeding difficulty, inadequate information on postpartum, psychological disease history, C/S, low birth weight, prematurity, and long hospital stay was found to be predictors of PPD and poor maternal adaptation. As perception of social support and maternal adaptation decreased, PPD symptoms increased. Health providers should detect PPD symptoms of these mothers and have them referred early for counselling.

ObjectiveTo identify interventions to reduce parental stress and increase readiness of parents to care for their preterm baby.MethodsThis scoping review was conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute Guidelines, using the following databases: Science Direct, Scopus, MEDLINE, and ProQuest.ResultsThirteen articles were found and selected for review. The main psychological problem of parents of preterm babies includes stress, anxiety, and depression. There were three types of interventions given to overcome parental stress and improve maternal competencies but the most used interventions were music therapy and parental involvement in preterm care while in the neonatal intensive care.ConclusionParental stress, mothers’ anxiety, and depression are the main problems of parents of a preterm neonate. To address these psychological problems and increase maternal competencies, it is necessary to combine several interventions.

BackgroundPreterm infants often need admission to a neonatal unit causing prolonged stress for parents. Evidence has shown that neonatal early supported transfer to home interventions may reduce stress levels. This systematic review investigates effectiveness of neonatal early supported transfer to home interventions for parents and preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units.MethodsSix databases and two trials registries were searched from inception to February 2022. Risk of bias was assessed using the RoB2 and ROBINS I tool.ResultsTen studies were included. Neonatal early supported transfer to home interventions reduced duration of hospital stay by up to 11 days compared to usual care, without significantly increasing hospital re-admission rates (p= >0.05). Studies were judged to have moderate to serious risk of bias.ConclusionsThe findings indicate that early supported transfer to home interventions may reduce hospital stay with no evidence of difference in hospital admission rates, infants weight gain or breastfeeding rates (compared to standard care). However, due to the dearth of high-quality evidence it is not possible to make recommendations for implementation.

The aim of this research project is to explore parents and staff opinion about the development of a digital educational program to meet parent's educational needs in neonatology. For this qualitative study, one-on-one and group interviews were conducted in person or via a web platform with 15 mothers, 5 fathers and 9 neonatal nurses. Participants considered the digital educational program presented relevant and complete. They believed the digital educational program should be available as soon as possible for parents, at admission or even before. More than half thought it was better to have the information presented on a website, while an equal number of participants considered an application to be optimal. In addition, participants proposed several additional topics to add, such as information about discharge, resources available in the NICU or after discharge, and breastfeeding complications, among others. In conclusion, a digital educational program addressing topics such as parenting, infants' behaviour and appearance, and the care environment is appropriate to meet the needs of premature infants' parents.

Preterm infants receive little comforting touch in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Most of the touch they receive is associated with medical or nursing procedures. This report reviews research related to the use of comforting touch and massage as an intervention to reduce stress in preterm infants in the NICU. Findings from these studies suggest that gentle touch may be soothing for infants who are physiologically fragile and may result in decreased motor activity and behavioral distress. Stroking and massage interventions may have benefits for infants who are physiologically stable. Caregivers can be advised to provide gentle touch when infants are physiologically fragile, and progress to gentle stroking and massage as the infants mature. The research findings to date suggest that when infants are physiologically fragile they may respond best to still, gentle touch. As they mature and become more stable, caregivers can begin to provide gentle stroking and massage, observing the infants' responses and modifying their tactile stimulation accordingly.
