The recent discovery of archival material has shed interesting light on the origins of Epilepsia and also the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE). The idea of an international journal devoted to epilepsy seems first to have arisen from talks between Dr. L. J. J. Muskens and Dr. W. Aldren Turner in 1905. A protracted series of subsequent letters between Muskens and a Haarlem publisher show how the idea slowly took shape. The committee of patronage, editorial board, and editorial assistants was probably first approached at the First International Congress of Psychiatry, Neurology, Psychology, and Nursing of the Insane, held in Amsterdam in 1907. At this meeting, the concept of an international organization to fight epilepsy (to become the ILAE) was also first proposed in public, again by Muskens. The concept of the ILAE was clearly modeled on another international organization—the International Commission for the Study of the Causes of Mental Diseases and Their Prophylaxis. This Commission had been first publicly proposed in 1906 by Ludwig Frank, at the Second International Congress for the Care and Treatment of the Insane. The proposed Commission and ILAE shared many features, aims, and personnel. Despite an auspicious start, the International Commission was prevented by personal and political differences from ever actually coming into being. However, the first issue of Epilepsia appeared in March 1909 and the ILAE was inaugurated in August 1909; and both have flourished and celebrate their centenaries this year.  相似文献

Gender disparity has been documented in advanced doctoral degrees, research, and academic positions, and therefore, it can logically be deduced that the gender disparity would be found in journals' editorial boards. In this study, we sought to determine the gender distribution in editorial boards of psychiatry journals worldwide. We also studied the academic achievements of editorial board members by comparing professional background, education level, and research productivity indices. We analyzed the gender of editorial members of 119 psychiatry journals from Clarivate Analytics' Journal Citation Reports. Our data included 8423 editorial board members from which we randomly selected 10% editorial board members to represent the full sample for further analyses. Overall, women represented 30.4% of editorial board and approximately 30% in each category: (1) Editor-in-chief/deputies, (2) Associate/section editors, (3) Editorial board*, and (4) Advisory board. The majority (65%) of men were M.D. psychiatrists, and women (58%) were Ph.D. psychologists. Women in editorial leadership positions (Category 1 & 2) were correlated with fewer women in editorial or advisory boards. Women had half the mean number of publications than men while serving journals with approximately the same mean impact factor. Our study results show that, besides gender disparity, gender bias does not exist in the psychiatry journal editorial boards. Given the implication of the editorial board position on science, academic advancement, and networking, this disparity remains detrimental to achieving equity, diversity, and inclusion in academic psychiatry.  相似文献

The International Working Group on Harmonization of Dementia Drug Guidelines has held the third Asia-Pacific Chapter meeting in 2004. The committee concludes that the Neuropsychiatric Inventory and the Clinical Dementia Rating are culturally acceptable assessment tools. The epidemiology studies of mild cognitive impairment and dementia in Asia were discussed at the meeting. The committee encouraged a collaborative research in the region in the future.  相似文献

The present survey determined women's participation in eight journals concerned with mental retardation and related topics. The number of female authors was recorded for all articles published in these journals from 1991 through 2000. The number of women on the editorial board each year, for each journal, also was tabulated. For all years and all journals, women were first authors of 41% of articles published. Women wrote 34% of single-author articles. Overall, 45% of all authors were women. Women constituted 34% of the editorial board members for the eight journals combined. In sum, these data suggest that women's contribution to the mental retardation literature decreases with the prestige of the activity.  相似文献

Objective: Research on stereotactic neurosurgery for psychiatric disorders (SNPD) is rapidly evolving. Knowledge on patients undergoing SNPD is of crucial importance. We describe applicants for SNPD and examine the necessity for a multidisciplinary advisory board. Method: Summary of the current practice of the Flemish advisory board (SNPD committee) and analysis of a questionnaire investigating the attitude of clinicians on SNPD. Results: In 7 years, 91 applications were submitted, nine patients did not fulfill diagnostic criteria for OCD, 65 patients received a positive recommendation, 50 SNPD procedures were performed. The prevalence of SNPD in the current year in Belgium is 0.6/million inhabitants. Ninety‐seven per cent of clinicians consider the expertise and advice of the SNPD committee essential for indication setting. Forty‐four percent of clinicians consider referral of a patient for capsulotomy, 82% for electrical brain stimulation. Conclusion: Neurosurgery is exclusively considered for severe, treatment‐refractory psychiatric disorders. Clinicians consider the SNPD committee essential in the decision‐making process prior to intervention.  相似文献

Editorial
The publication of this issue of the Zentralblatt für Neurochirurgie is an important moment in the journal's history: The members of the editorial board will hand over their responsibility. During the past decade of trusting editorial teamwork, the fruitful cooperation of the journal and the German Society of Neurosurgery has been successfully established and developed. Starting with issue 1/2002, editorship will be taken over by Prof. J. Schramm MD, Bonn, and a new Board.  相似文献

A committee of staff and patients conducted an informal evaluation of a therapeutic community on a 16-bed psychiatric unit. The committee reviewed the history, original intent, current purpose, and effectiveness of meetings held on the unit; when problems were identified, suggestions for change were formulated. The evaluation served to increase the efficiency of meetings and to counteract what the authors termed the "drift phenomenon," or the tendency of the original purpose or structure of a meeting to change over time. The process also fostered an atmosphere of mutual respect and an enhanced sense of purpose among the patients and staff who worked on the committee.  相似文献

The evaluation for the abstracts submitted for the annual meeting of the German Neurosurgical Society together with the Swiss Neurosurgical Society in Munich 1999, is presented as it has developed during the meetings of the last years. 597 abstracts were reviewed by the 30 members of the review committee according to a 5 point grading system. Cut off for acceptance was a mean grading of 2.7 points. Abstracts better than 2.4 were accepted, abstracts worse than 2.7 were rejected. Experimental studies were judged slightly better than clinical studies: the mean grading of clinical and experimental studies was 2.55 +/- 0.5 vs. 2.72 +/- 0.6 (p < 0.02). All abstracts with a mean grading of 2.4-2.7 and a standard deviation > 1.0 were discussed in a meeting of the review committee. 353 abstracts were accepted. Some of the abstracts submitted for oral presentation had to be converted to poster presentations. Among others the decision was based on the grading of the abstract.  相似文献

The Last word
We have included prevention as well as treatment in the title of this new journal because prevention has become a passion for many of us on the editorial board. We hope our readers share this passion.  相似文献
