Managing potential conflict of interest in journal article publication

The issue of potential conflict of interest and its risk to professional integrity in journal article publication has been strongly debated in medical circles. Most medical journals adhere to international requirements for disclosure of potential conflict of interest. The debate on this issue in nursing, and specifically mental health nursing, has been neither prolific nor strong, despite nursing's potential to influence particular viewpoints about treatment and indeed to prescribe particular treatments; and nursing being a target for pharmaceutical industry marketing. The purpose of this paper is to raise debate about potential conflict of interest in journal article publication and to make recommendations for the management of such potential for this journal.

目的分析《护理管理杂志》2004年刊载论文及其引文,以了解该刊的现状和地位,评价其学术水平和期刊质量。方法采用文献计量学方法,对《护理管理杂志》2004年刊载的论文进行载文和引文分析。结果载文量358篇;载文作者分布在30个省及直辖市,合著率为2.6人/篇;总引文量1725条,平均引文量4.82条/篇;中文引文率88.8%,英文引文率11.0%,日文引文率0.2%;期刊引文率76.5%,图书引文率21.6%;刊物自引率为4.1%;中文核心期刊共16种。结论《护理管理杂志》虽然创刊时间较短,但在护理领域已有一定影响力。它拥有一批优秀的作者群体,论文学术质量较高,已成为该学科的核心期刊。     

A Thematic Review of Men's Experiences During the Waiting Period Between Prostate-Specific Antigen and Prostate Biopsy Results

With our aging population and an increased awareness of men's health issues, there has been an increase in screening and diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa). Screening for PCa commences with digital rectal examination (DRE) and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test, followed by examination with transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy. Very few authors have described the subjective experiences of men going through PCa screening nor the qualitative expressions that reflect their feelings, thoughts, and emotions. The purpose of this review was to explore the research literature on PCa screening to locate the voices of men going through the screening process. A literature search of databases, journal, and book references of articles in English, published between 1999 and 2009 was used. The main themes were expressed as, “Prostate Cancer Screening,” “Feelings and Emotions,” “Variations of Masculinity,” “Coping with Prostate Cancer Information,” and “Interactions with Doctors and Specialists.” This literature review revealed rich information that has the potential to inform the practice of PCa screening.     

Academic Advancement of Authors Receiving Tutoring From a Medical Journal

Background: Although publishing in scientific journals has an educational component, the educational role of journals in medicine has not been evaluated. Purpose: To assess whether tutoring authors in a medical scientific journal could be related to their long-term scientific publications and academic advancement. Methods: The study included 47 journal authors who were individually tutored in scientific writing and data presentation by the editors of the Croatian Medical Journal during the 1991–1995 war years and 47 colleagues the authors identified as their academic peers at the time of tutoring. We assessed their published articles in scientific journals, citations to these articles, and academic advancement, defined as the level of postgraduate education and advancement in the academic rank. Results: By 2003, tutored authors published more articles in MEDLINE-indexed journals than their academic peers (median = 4, interquartile range = 1–9 vs. 1 [0–5], respectively; p =. 0265), and received more citations to these articles (4 [0–16] vs. 1 [0–6], p =. 0275). They also made a significantly greater academic advancement, assessed as a score of their academic rank and research degree (2 [0–4] vs. 1 [0–2], p =. 0369). Conclusions: Editorial tutoring of journal authors can positively influence their long-term academic advancement. Journals may have an important teaching role in local academic communities.     

Análisis bibliométrico de los artículos originales de la revista EnfermeríaIntensiva durante el período 2001-2020

IntroductionBibliometric analysis allow the quantitative evaluation of the characteristics of a scientific publication.ObjectiveTo perform a bibliometric analysis of original articles in the journal EnfermeríaIntensiva from 2001 to 2020.ResultsThe journal EnfermeríaIntensiva has published, between 2001 and 2020, 438 works, of which 259 are original articles (59.1%). These original articles are mostly quantitative studies (76.1%), with an average of 30.5 bibliographic references (SD 13.9), 4.9 citations (SD 1.7) in the Web of Science and Scopus repertoires, and 15,489.5 visits/downloads (median 9,090 and interquartile range 4,567-15,260) according to information on the magazine's website. These originals have been signed by 1,345 authors, which represents a collaboration index of 5.2 (SD 0.7). A percentage of 78.0 of the authors are sporadic, having published only one work. Most of the articles come from authors who work in institutionally located in hospitals and university centers, and geographically in the communities of Madrid, Cataluña, Navarra and Andalucía.ConclusionsThere is little international, regional and institutional collaboration, producing the highest level of collaboration between authors from the same center. The journal has established itself in the panorama of scientific nursing research in Spain and shows bibliometric indicators similar or even superior to other publications in its environment.     

Journal club in a critical care unit: an innovative design triggering learning through reading and dialogue

Journal club has been used for decades to incorporate reading clinical and research articles into professional practice of numerous health care providers to disseminate knowledge and to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice. In this article, the authors describe how such activity was implemented by and for the nursing team of an intensive care unit. This journal club was designed to trigger dialogue among the nurses related to cardiac surgery topics, while providing an organizational support for them aimed to facilitate the incorporation of reading in their professional habits. More specifically, the design of this journal club was intended to create an opportunity for these nurses to keep their practice updated, to review physiological or pathological processes related to the cardiac surgery population, and to explore if how and why the results described in those research reports should be implemented in their own intensive care unit. The authors describe the phases of this project: the co-development of the journal club, the implementation of the activity and its results. The authors detail how this journal club format incorporated additional teaching aids during each session and used narrative pedagogy as a conceptual framework.
