Changes in body composition occur around the menopausal transition. The major characteristics are a decline in fat-free mass and an increase in body fat as a percentage of body weight. These alterations might be affected by age only or by menopause-related changes in hormone concentration. In this study the effects of tibolone, a tissue-specific compound with favorable effects on bone, vagina, and climacteric symptoms, were determined on body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis. The focus was especially on fat mass, fat-free mass, and total body water in a group of 85 healthy women (mean +/- SD age, 54.2 +/- 4.7 yr), between 1-15 yr postmenopausal. Participants were randomly assigned to either tibolone (2.5 mg; n = 42) or identically appearing placebo tablets (n = 43) daily for 12 months. All analyses were based on the intent to treat group and last visit. Compared with placebo, tibolone significantly increased fat-free mass by 0.85 kg (P = 0.003) and total body water by 0.78 liter (P = 0.001). No significant difference was observed on the fat mass parameter (P = 0.16). From these results it can be concluded that tibolone may counteract the postmenopausal changes in body composition.  相似文献

To evaluate the effect of bromocriptine withdrawal after dopaminergic long-term treatment (15.0 +/- 6.8 mg/day, mean +/- SD) in 12 acromegalic patients on body composition, bioelectrical impedance was measured before and at the end of two weeks of drug withdrawal. During withdrawal basal hGH and IGF-I increased from 2.5 +/- 1.9 micrograms/l and 2.1 +/- 0.8 kU/l to 9.1 +/- 11.7 micrograms/l and 4.9 +/- 2.2 kU/l, respectively, and the hGH secretion deteriorated significantly both after oral glucose load and in the TRH test, indicating recurrence of active acromegaly. Reactance and resistance decreased by 5 +/- 4 and 23 +/- 19 omega, respectively (p less than 0.01), whereas body weight remained constant (+0.4 +/- 2.1 kg). Bioelectrical impedance analysis indicated evident shifts in body composition, i.e. a significant reduction of body fat (-2.0 +/- 1.7 kg) and a simultaneous increase in both lean body mass (+2.4 +/- 2.2 kg) and total body water (+1.8 +/- 1.6 l). The changes in body composition were related to a combined effect of unsuppressed hypersomatotropism and the lack of bromocriptine actions other than inhibition of hGH secretion (for example stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system by both the recurred hypersomatotropism and the absence of dopaminergic bromocriptine effects). We conclude that bioelectrical impedance analysis is a good additional tool to assess the pathophysiological effects of bromocriptine withdrawal in long-term treated acromegalic patients.  相似文献

AIDS wasting syndrome results in loss of lean body mass and body cell mass. This 12-week, open-label study used bioelectrical impedance analysis to measure body composition changes in 24 patients with AIDS wasting syndrome receiving recombinant human growth hormone (r-hGH). The primary endpoint was percentage monthly change in body weight before/after r-hGH. Secondary endpoints included change from baseline in body composition (bioelectrical impedance analysis), isometric strength and CD4+ count. Twenty patients completed the study: r-hGH resulted in mean weight gains (+2.7%, P = 0.146), and significant increases in mean body cell mass (+8.0%, P = 0.0211), lean body mass (+4.8%, P = 0.0373) and water (+5.5%, P < 0.023). Body fat decreased throughout, but not significantly. r-hGH was generally well tolerated; the most frequent adverse events were fever (7.3%) and diarrhoea (6.3%). Thus, bioelectrical impedance analysis can detect improved body cell mass independent of changes in body weight resulting from r-hGH treatment in patients with AIDS wasting syndrome.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of orlistat (Xenical) treatment on body composition and resting energy expenditure (REE) during a 2 y weight-reduction programme in obese Finns. SUBJECTS: Of initially 96 obese subjects who participated in the weight-reduction programme, those 72 subjects (13 men, 59 women, body mass index (BMI) 35.9 +/- 3.9 kg/m2, age 43.4 +/- 6.0 y, mean +/- s.d.) with the complete set of data for 2 y were included in the study. DESIGN: After a 4-week lead-in period, subjects were randomized with either orlistat 120 mg t.i.d. or placebo t.i.d. in conjunction with a mildly hypoenergetic balanced diet for 1 y. This was followed by 1 y double-blind period with the subjects within each treatment group re-assigned to receive orlistat 120 mg t.i.d. or placebo t.i.d. in conjunction with a weight maintenance diet. MEASUREMENTS: Body composition and REE were measured after an overnight fast by a bioelectrical impedance method and indirect calorimeter, respectively. The measurements were performed at the beginning and at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months. RESULTS: During the first year, the orlistat-treated group had greater reduction of body weight and fat mass but not of fat-free mass or REE as compared to placebo. During the second year, orlistat treatment was associated with smaller regain of body weight and fat mass with no significant differences in the changes of fat-free mass or REE as compared to placebo. CONCLUSION: In addition to better weight loss and maintenance of reduced weight, orlistat treatment is associated with beneficial changes in body composition but with no excess decrease in resting energy expenditure as compared to that achieved during placebo with a dietary therapy alone.  相似文献

Uncontrolled trials have reported significant weight gain in women with breast cancer during treatment with adjuvant chemotherapy. We prospectively evaluated body composition before (visit 1), immediately after (visit 2), and 6 months after (visit 3) chemotherapy in 20 women with stages I-IIIA breast cancer [body mass index (BMI): 24.1 +/- 3.9 kg/m(2)]. We compared their weight change to 51 age- and BMI-matched healthy controls (BMI: 25.5 +/- 3.8 kg/m(2)). In women with breast cancer, there was no weight change from visit 1-2, or from visit 1-3, but weight increased from visit 2-3 (+1.09 +/- 2.46 kg; P = 0.05). Weight change was not different from controls during either interval. In the breast cancer group, the percentage of body fat assessed by air displacement plethysmography increased, and fat-free mass decreased from visit 1-2 (+2.3 +/- 4% and -2.2 +/- 4%; P = 0.02) and from visit 1-3 (+4.0 +/- 6% and -3.8 +/- 6%; P = 0.01). By dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, the percentage of body fat increased from visit 2-3 (+0.9 +/- 1.6%; P = 0.02). Bone mineral content decreased from visit 2-3 (-0.02 +/- 0.04 kg; P = 0.02) and from visit 1-3 (-0.04 +/- 0.06 kg; P = 0.005). By computed tomography, the visceral adipose to sc adipose tissue ratio decreased from visit 1-3 (-0.02 +/- 0.05 ml; P = 0.02). We conclude that, compared with controls, women with breast cancer receiving modern adjuvant chemotherapy regimens show no significant changes in weight during the first year of their treatment. They do, however, appear to undergo unfavorable changes in body composition.  相似文献

Body composition was assessed by means of densitometry, anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance in 28 healthy, elderly females, aged 67-78 years. Underwater weighing was used as the reference method. Mean body mass index (BMI) was 26.3 +/- 3.4 kg/m2. Body fat percentage from body density was 39.6 +/- 5.6%. The fat-free mass (FFM) from body density was 41.0 +/- 5.4 kg. Mean predicted FFM using different prediction formulas from the literature ranged from 38.8 +/- 4.2 to 46.3 +/- 5.3 kg. The differences between FFM from densitometry and FFM using either prediction equation were highly correlated, thus part of the difference is probably due to an error in the reference method. The different prediction equations revealed rather good relative validity, compared to the densitometric method, with the exception of equations based on skinfold measurements developed in younger reference populations. Age-specific prediction equations based on BMI and bioelectrical impedance measurement may be used to assess body composition in the elderly. Prediction equations using skinfold thickness measurements are less appropriate for this purpose.  相似文献

Laparoscopic gastric banding and body composition in morbid obesity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gastric banding induced considerable and rapid weight loss in morbid obesity. Nevertheless data on changes in body composition following gastric banding are scanty. In this study, we evaluated the 2-year changes in body composition in a small group of morbidly obese women treated by laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) associated with a well balanced low-calorie diet. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 20 premenopausal morbid obese women with BMI ranging from 35 to 57 (kg/m2) before, and 6, 12 and 24 months after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). A well balanced 5.4 MJ/day hypocaloric diet was prescribed after surgery. Total body water (TBW), fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) were investigated using conventional bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Tissue hydration was also assessed by impedance vector analysis and the RXc graph method. The subjects showed a total weight loss of 28% of baseline body weight. In the first 6 months after surgery, patients lost 18.5+/-5.9 kg of body weight (17.6+/-6.2 kg of FM and 0.7+/-1.4 kg of FFM). From 6 to 12 months, a further 12.5+/-7.5 kg of body weight was lost (10.5+/-8.2 kg of FM and 2.2+/-3.8 kg of FFM). During the last 12 months, weight loss was 3.0+/-2.3 kg (1.9+/-3.7 kg of FM and 1.1+/-2.9 kg of FFM). The weight loss observed after LAGB was mainly due to a decrease in FM, whereas TBW, FFM and BCM were only slightly and non-significantly reduced. No changes in body hydration status were observed after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: LAGB associated with a well balanced low-calorie diet achieved a satisfactory 2-year weight loss, while sparing FFM and not causing body fluid alterations.  相似文献

Body composition calculated from total body potassium and skeletal muscle potassium were studied in middle-aged obese men and women with normal and impaired glucose tolerance as well as Type II diabetes before and after advice on calorie reduction during twelve months. The subjects were compared with healthy lean men and women. Mean weight loss was 6.6 kg (P less than 0.05). Lean body mass and body fat decreased 2.0 kg (P less than 0.05) and 4.6 kg (P less than 0.05), respectively. Total body potassium decreased by a mean of 146 +/- 49 mmol (P less than 0.01). Obese men with Type II diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance had lower total body potassium and muscle potassium levels than obese healthy men. After dieting, the obese men and women increased their muscle potassium levels with a mean of 2.8 mmol/100 fat-free dry weight to 42.6 +/- 2.6 mmol/100 g fat-free dry weight (P less than 0.05), but they were still below the levels of the lean controls, 44.4 +/- 1.3 MMOL/100 g fat-free dry weight, (P less than 0.01). Increase in skeletal muscle potassium was correlated to decrease in body weight, r = 0.55 (P less than 0.01) and to decrease in fasting blood glucose, r = 0.42 (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

This study investigated the change in body composition in 36 cancer outpatients receiving radiotherapy to the head and neck area (mean age: 63 +/- 15 years) randomised to receive either nutrition intervention (NI; n=15) or usual care (UC; n=21). Body weight and composition were measured at the commencement of radiotherapy and 3 months later. The UC group lost significantly more weight; mean decrease = 4.3 kg, than the NI group: mean decrease = 1.1 kg (t((30))=-2.5, p=0.019). Fat-free mass loss was significantly higher in the UC group with a mean loss of 2.2 kg versus 0.3 kg in the NI group (t((30))=- 2.3, p=0.029). Body composition as measured by foot-to-foot bioelectrical impedance analysis provides more information than weight alone and can allow for tailoring of NI.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: We determined the effect of 3 months of daily, 40 mg oral testosterone undecanoate on growth, body composition, hand grip and quadriceps muscle strength, and total free-living daily energy expenditure in boys with constitutionally delayed puberty. DESIGN: Double blind, placebo controlled study. PATIENTS: Eighteen boys with constitutionally delayed puberty, mean (SD) age 13.2 (1.6) years. MEASUREMENTS: Body composition measurements were made by skinfold thickness, bioelectrical impedance and stable isotope dilution (H2(18)O) methods. Energy expenditure was assessed by the doubly-labelled water (2H2(18)O) technique. RESULTS: Height velocity increased from 5.4 (0.8) to 8.1 (0.6) cm/year (P < 0.05) in the 3 months after active therapy. Fat-free mass increased more with therapy (2.7 (0.3) kg) over the 6-month study period than with placebo (1.7 (0.4) kg, P < 0.5). Height velocity increases correlated with daily increases in fat-free mass (r = 0.68, P = 0.005) in the study group as a whole. Energy expenditure and muscle strength increased similarly in both groups. Predicted adult height decreased in the group which was treated with testosterone undecanoate. CONCLUSIONS: Testosterone undecanoate (40 mg daily for 3 months) significantly increased height velocity and fat-free mass velocities after 6 months but not muscle strength, endurance or total daily energy expenditure.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIM: To evaluate whether chronic treatment with beta-blockers influences resting energy expenditure (REE) and weight loss after a period of diet and physical activity in obese hypertensive patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seventy-eight obese hypertensive patients (24 males and 54 females) aged 53.7 +/- 11.1 years with mean BMI of 42.4 +/- 5.8 kg/m2 were enrolled. Thirty-eight patients were using beta-blockers while 40 patients who had not received beta-blockers in the past 6 months were the control group. REE was measured with indirect calorimetric method. Total body fat mass, total body fat-free mass (FFM) and total body water (W) were determined by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Patients and controls underwent a structured physical training program and a hypocaloric diet for a period of 31.6 +/- 10.6 days. Measured REE in patients taking beta-blockers was 1818 +/- 309 kcal/24 h and 1853 +/- 348 kcal/24 h in patients not taking beta-blockers; p = non significant. Weight and BMI loss were similar between the two groups and were respectively -6.43 +/- 2.62 kg and -2.42 +/- 0.91 kg/m2 in the beta-blocker group and -7.49 +/- 3.10 kg, -2.78 +/- 1.03 kg/m2 in the non beta-blocker group. Body composition was similar in the two groups. In the comparison between patients treated with selective beta 1-adrenoceptors blockers and non selective beta-blockers we found a significant difference in REE (1704 +/- 283 vs 1974 +/- 278; p = 0.012) and in weight loss (-5.6 +/- 2.4 vs -7.5 +/- 2.7; p = 0.048) at the end of study. CONCLUSIONS: Beta-blockers are not associated with a lower REE in obese subjects compared to other antihypertensive treatment. Use of non selective beta-adrenergic blockers is associated with a higher REE and weight loss compared to use of selective beta 1-adrenergic blockers. Non selective beta-blockers could be indicated among first choice drugs in hypertensive severely obese subjects without contraindications to beta-blockade.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In light of the current obesity epidemic, treatment models are needed that can prevent weight gain or provide weight loss. We examined the long-term effects of a supervised program of moderate-intensity exercise on body weight and composition in previously sedentary, overweight and moderately obese men and women. We hypothesized that a 16-month program of verified exercise would prevent weight gain or provide weight loss in the exercise group compared with controls. METHODS: This was a randomized controlled efficacy trial. Participants were recruited from 2 midwestern universities and their surrounding communities. One hundred thirty-one participants were randomized to exercise or control groups, and 74 completed the intervention and all laboratory testing. Exercise was supervised, and the level of energy expenditure of exercise was measured. Controls remained sedentary. All participants maintained ad libitum diets. RESULTS: Exercise prevented weight gain in women and produced weight loss in men. Men in the exercise group had significant mean +/- SD decreases in weight (5.2 +/- 4.7 kg), body mass index (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters) (1.6 +/- 1.4), and fat mass (4.9 +/- 4.4 kg) compared with controls. Women in the exercise group maintained baseline weight, body mass index, and fat mass, and controls showed significant mean +/- SD increases in body mass index (1.1 +/- 2.0), weight (2.9 +/- 5.5 kg), and fat mass (2.1 +/- 4.8 kg) at 16 months. No significant changes occurred in fat-free mass in either men or women; however, both had significantly reduced visceral fat. CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-intensity exercise sustained for 16 months is effective for weight management in young adults.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of body composition is of primary importance in the management of celiac adolescents. We aimed to evaluate body composition by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and bioelectrical impedance in celiac adolescents on a gluten-free diet to investigate whether impedance may provide an alternative method to assess nutritional status in these patients. METHODS: We studied body composition in 43 adolescents affected by celiac disease on a gluten-free diet for > or = 1 yr and 30 healthy subjects. Fat, fat-free, and bone masses were assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Fat and fat-free masses were also assessed by bioelectrical impedance. All anthropometric measurements were performed according to standard procedures. RESULTS: All patients had a significantly lower body weight, height, fat-free mass, bone mineral density (p < 0.001), and body mass index (p < 0.01) compared with controls. In contrast, parameters predicting fat compartment (sum of skinfolds and fat mass) did not differ from those of controls. No significant difference was found between patients strictly adherent to a gluten-free diet and patients partially compliant. Compared with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry measurements, bioelectrical impedance showed a high accuracy to estimate fat-free mass (R2 = 0.97) and limited accuracy for fat mass (R2 = 0.75). Furthermore, impedance was more reliable for estimating hydration of soft tissue underlying the fat-free mass changes. CONCLUSIONS: In adolescents with celiac disease, after a mean of 1 yr of gluten-free diet all the parameters assessing body compartments, except fat mass, were affected, compared with healthy controls. Bioelectrical impedance holds promise for routine assessment of body composition changes in celiac adolescents on a gluten-free diet.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the controversy regarding the means of adjusting the energy cost of physical activity measured by doubly labeled water for differences in body size. DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional study of the energy costs of carefully reproduced light activities with careful control for fidgeting and other unnecessary movement. SUBJECTS: :The study was performed in 23 healthy, young to middle aged adults with body masses between 39 and 118 kg. MEASUREMENTS: Energy expenditure was measured by respiratory gas exchange while subjects performed controlled light activities representative of activities of daily life. Body composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS: The energy costs of individual controlled light activities were proportional to body weight except for mock vacuum cleaning. When the energy costs of all five activities were taken together, allometric regression analysis indicated that the energy cost of these light activities was proportional to body weight (slope=0.88+/-0.07), but not to fat-free mass (1.24+/-0.10), fat mass (0.27+/-0.03) or resting metabolic rate (1.43+/-0.12). CONCLUSION: Normalization of energy expenditure of physical activity by division by body weight is an appropriate means for comparing the volume (intensity x time) of physical activity between individuals of different body size.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Obesity exacerbates the age-related decline in physical function and causes frailty in older persons. However, appropriate treatment for obese older persons is unknown. We evaluated the effects of weight loss and exercise therapy on physical function and body composition in obese older persons. METHODS: We screened 40 obese older volunteers and eventually randomized 27 frail obese older volunteers to treatment or control groups. Treatment consisted of 6 months of weekly behavioral therapy for weight loss in conjunction with exercise training 3 times per week. Physical function was evaluated with measurements of frailty (Physical Performance Test, peak oxygen consumption, and Functional Status Questionnaire); strength, gait, and balance tests; body composition with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry; and quality of life using the Medical Outcomes Survey 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey. Results are reported as mean +/- SD. RESULTS: Two subjects in the treatment group did not comply with the intervention, and 1 subject in the control group withdrew. Analyses included all 27 subjects originally randomized to the treatment and control groups. The treatment group lost 8.4% +/- 5.6% of body weight, whereas weight did not change in the control group (+0.5% +/- 2.8%; P<.001). Compared with the control group, fat mass decreased (-6.6 +/- 3.4 vs +1.7 +/- 4.1 kg; P<.001), without a change in fat-free mass (-1.2 +/- 2.1 vs -1.0 +/- 3.5 kg; P = .75) in the treatment group. The Physical Performance Test score (2.6 +/- 2.5 vs 0.1 +/- 1.0; P = .001), peak oxygen consumption (1.7 +/- 1.6 vs 0.3 +/- 1.1 mL/min per kilogram; P = .02), and Functional Status Questionnaire score (2.9 +/- 3.7 vs -0.2 +/- 3.9; P = .02) improved in treated subjects compared with control subjects. Treatment also improved strength, walking speed, obstacle course, 1-leg limb stance time, and health survey physical subscale scores (all P<.05). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that weight loss and exercise can ameliorate frailty in obese older adults.Trial Registration clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT00146133.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Increasing body mass index, cholesterol and body fat are associated with a better prognosis in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD). Beta-blocker usage is associated with changes in body composition and increased body fat. The present study investigated 12-month changes in body composition in patients with LVSD initiated on beta-blocker therapy. METHODS: The relation between beta-blocker use and body composition was evaluated in 91 patients (75% male) with LVSD. Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance. RESULTS: Seventeen patients died during the study period. There was no statistical difference among beta-blocker usage, beta-blocker type, or changes in body fat, basal metabolic rate, impedance, fat-free mass, fat mass and total body water. There were no significant differences between any of these measures and beta-blocker usage. CONCLUSION: After 12 months, changes in body composition were not found to be influenced by initiation of beta-blocker therapy in patients with LVSD.  相似文献

To assess the relative influence of maternal body composition at late gestation on birth weight, we examined maternal body composition near term (36.50+/-2.67 weeks gestation) in a group of 29 women, aged 20-39 years. The women came to the laboratory after an overnight fast. After anthropometric measurements, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was performed, determining resistance (R) and reactance (Xc), with a Tefal scale at 50 kHz. Fat mass (FM, kg) and fat-free mass (FFM, kg) were determined with the total body water (TBW) equation of Siri. The correlation between BIA parameters and birth weights was examined by linear regression analysis. All subjects delivered between 37 and 41 weeks' gestation. The mean+/-SD values of the studied parameters were: Xc=490.00+/-77.34 ohm, R=55.71+/-8.71 ohm, FM=24.18+/-6.51 kg, FFM=45.82+/-2.65 kg, maternal weight gain=9.51+/-6.43 kg, birth weight=3.43+/-0.36 kg. A direct significant correlation was found between FFM, maternal weight gain, and birth weight. It is known that in late pregnancy, maternal weight gain over gestation is linked to birth weight. We observed that FFM was the most important maternal body component associated with the newborn weight at term gestation, and we believe that this finding might be elucidated by fluid retention. In fact, resistance seemed to be inversely related to birth weight and we do not overlook the link between resistance and TBW. The implementation of our study could shed more light on the influence of maternal body composition on birth weight.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of low-dose growth hormone (GH) therapy combined with diet restriction on changes in body composition and the consequent change in insulin resistance in newly-diagnosed obese type 2 diabetic patients. DESIGN: Double-blind and placebo-controlled trial of 25-kcal/kg IBW diet daily with GH (n=9; rhGH, 0.15 IU/kg body weight/week) or placebo (n=9) for 12 weeks. SUBJECTS: Eighteen newly-diagnosed obese type 2 diabetic patients (age 42--56 y, body mass index 28.1+/-2.7 kg/m(2)). MEASUREMENTS: Body composition and fat distribution parameters (by bioelectrical impedance analyzer and CT scans), serum IGF-1; serum glucose, insulin and free fatty acid (FFA) during oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT); HbA(1c); serum lipid profiles; and glucose disposal rate (GDR) by euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp at baseline and after treatment. RESULTS: The fraction of body weight lost as fat lost was significantly greater (0.98+/-0.39 vs 0.52+/-0.32 kg/kg, P<0.05) and visceral fat area was decreased more in the GH-treated group compared to the placebo-treated group (27.9 vs 21.6%, P<0.05). Lean body mass and muscle area were reduced in the placebo-treated group, whereas an increase in both was observed in the GH-treated group. GDR the was significantly increased in only the GH-treated group (4.67+/-1.05 vs 6.95+/-0.91 mg/kg/min, P<0.05). The GH-induced increase in GDR was positively correlated with the decrease in the ratio of visceral fat area/muscle area (r=0.588, P=0.001). Serum glucose levels and insulin- and FFA-area under the curve during OGTT and HbA(1c) were significantly decreased after GH treatment. LDL-cholesterol level was decreased in only the GH-treated group. CONCLUSION: Low-dose GH treatment combined with dietary restriction resulted not only in a decrease of visceral fat but also in an increase of muscle mass with a consequent improvement of the insulin resistance observed in obese type 2 diabetic patients.  相似文献

Effect of licorice on the reduction of body fat mass in healthy subjects   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The history of licorice, as a medicinal plant, is very old and has been used in many societies throughout the millennia. The active principle, glycyrrhetinic acid, is responsible for sodium retention and hypertension, which is the most common side-effect. We show an effect of licorice in reducing body fat mass. We studied 15 normal-weight subjects (7 males, age 22-26 yr, and 8 females, age 21-26 yr), who consumed for 2 months 3.5 g a day of a commercial preparation of licorice. Body fat mass (BFM, expressed as percentage of total body weight, by skinfold thickness and by bioelectrical impedance analysis, BIA) and extracellular water (ECW, percentage of total body water, by BIA) were measured. Body mass index (BMI) did not change. ECW increased (males: 41.8+/-2.0 before vs 47.0+/-2.3 after, p<0.001; females: 48.2+/-1.4 before vs 49.4+/-2.1 after, p<0.05). BFM was reduced by licorice: (male: before 12.0+/-2.1 vs after 10.8+/-2.9%, p<0.02; female: before 24.9+/-5.1 vs after 22.1+/-5.4, p<0.02); plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone were suppressed. Licorice was able to reduce body fat mass and to suppress aldosterone, without any change in BMI. Since the subjects were consuming the same amount of calories during the study, we suggest that licorice can reduce fat by inhibiting 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase Type 1 at the level of fat cells.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the difference between air displacement plethysmograph (ADP) and bioelectrical impedance (BI) for assessing body composition changes during weight loss in Japanese women. DESIGN: Cross-sectional and longitudinal investigation study. SUBJECTS: In a first cross-sectional study, we used data of 7380 Japanese women aged 14-83 years [body mass index (BMI): 22.6 +/- 3.7 kg/m(2)] at baseline. Among the participants, we used data of 54 women (BMI: 25.9 +/- 3.9 kg/m(2)) for a 5-month follow-up study. MEASUREMENTS: Body fat percentage was evaluated by ADP and BI, and body fat (kg) and lean body mass (kg) were calculated. Anthropometric parameters, such as height, weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference and waist hip ratio, were also measured. In a second longitudinal study, they were also investigated before and after the study. RESULTS: In a first cross-sectional study, body fat percentage was 31.2 +/- 7.0% in ADP and 25.7 +/- 6.8% in BI. A significant relationship was observed between ADP and BI (r = 0.761, p < 0.01). In a second longitudinal study, body weight was significantly reduced. There were significant method (ADP vs. BI) and time (pre and post) effects but no interactions in assessing body fat percentage. There was a significant relationship between ADP and BI in body fat percentage, body fat and lean body mass. Delta body fat percentage (r = 0.386, p < 0.01) and delta body fat (r = 0.556, p < 0.01) measured by ADP were weakly correlated with those measured by BI. However, delta lean body mass measured by ADP was not correlated with that measured by BI. CONCLUSION: There was a discrepancy between ADP and BI for assessing body composition changes in Japanese women. ADP is preferentially recommended for evaluating body composition.  相似文献
