Parasite community composition of European bitterling (Rhodeus amarus), the only bitterling species occurring on the European continent, was investigated in 16 different localities from four European sea drainages during 1998–2007. A total of 41 species of metazoan parasites was identified. Nine parasite species are new records for European bitterling, namely Dactylogyrus rarissimus, D. suecicus, D. yinwenyingae, Gyrodactylus vimbi, Sphaerostomum globiporum, Petasiger sp., Paryphostomum radiatum, Ichthyocotylurus variegatus and Posthodiplostomum brevicaudatum. The specialist Gyrodactylus rhodei was the most widely distributed and one of the most prevalent species. The most frequent digenean species, represented by larval stages, was Metorchis xanthosomus. The parasite community of European bitterling was characterised by the dominance of generalists and parasites with autogenic life cycles. The rare occurrence of strictly endoparasitic species reflected the specific diet of the fish host. The character of the habitat significantly affected the parasite assemblages of bitterling. The greatest similarity was associated with lentic habitats (gravel pits and oxbows) and the lowest similarity between gravel pits and rivers. Juvenile bitterling from 8mm in length upwards were colonised by metazoan parasites, firstly by the monogenean G. rhodei. Host body size was positively correlated with parasite species richness, but the variability explained by length was low.  相似文献

The known metazoa parasite fauna of the invasive round goby Apollonia melanostoma (formerly Neogobius melanostomus) consists of 12 species. The core of the parasite fauna comprises two species: Cryptocotyle concavum and Diplostomum spathaceum; secondary species are absent; satellite species include Cercariae gen. sp. and Ergasilus sieboldi; rare species are Acanthocephalus lucii, Anguillicola crassus, Bothriocephalus sp., Dichelyne minutus, Hysterothylacium aduncum, Pomphorhynchus laevis, Piscicola geometra, and Tylodelphys clavata. Fifty percent of metazoa parasites that occurred in the invasive round goby in the Gulf of Gdańsk (an invasion that was first detected in 1990) are also typically found in the native Gulf of Gdańsk gobiids. The round goby hosts common fish parasite species: C. concavum and D. minutus, but none that are unique to the species and no Ponto–Caspian parasites. Notably, the parasite species of the invasive round goby in the Gulf of Gdańsk includes species that are atypical for this species in its native habitat. In its new habitat, the round goby variously serves the roles of definitive, second intermediate, and paratenic host for different parasite species. The fish species is involved in a parasitic system that includes fish-eating birds, fishes of different ecological groups (predatory, planktivorous, and benthivorous), and invertebrates.  相似文献

The estuarine-dependent marine fish includes marine species that inhabit, at some stage of their life cycle, the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. In the present study, we examined for parasites a total of 209 fishes belonging to following the estuarine-dependent marine species: Brevoortia aurea, Odontesthes argentinensis, Mugil platanus, Paralichthys orbignyanus, Micropogonias furnieri, and Pogonias cromis. The parasite fauna in the six host species comprised 43 parasite species, the majority of which represented new locality and new host records. A high percentage of fish was parasitized with at least one parasite species. The greatest values of prevalence were registered for M. furnieri, B. aurea, and P. cromis, at the component community level, followed by P. orbignyanus, O. argentinensis, and M. platanus. On the other hand, B. aurea, O. argentinensis, M. furnieri, and P. cromis showed similar percentages of both larval and adult stages of parasites. In the case of M. platanus, adult stages dominated the total number of parasites, whereas P. orbignyanus harbored mainly larval stages. Out of the six fish species herein studied, M. platanus seems to generally act only as definitive host in the local parasite’s life cycle. From a parasitological point of view, the expression “estuarine-dependent marine fishes” remains valid, although the contribution of the fish species in the lagoon to the maintenance of parasite populations is relatively minor.  相似文献

An intensive parasite survey was conducted in 2008 to better understand the parasite fauna occurrence, distribution and diversity in the commercial aquaculture fish species in Uganda. A total of 265 fish collected from hatcheries and grow-out systems were examined for parasites using routine parasitological techniques. The survey yielded 17 parasite species: 11 from Oreochromis niloticus and ten from Clarias gariepinus. Four parasites—Amirthalingamia macracantha, Monobothrioides sp., Zoogonoides sp. and a member of the family Amphilinidae—were recorded for the first time in the country. The parasite diversity was similar between hosts; however, O. niloticus was dominated by free-living stage-transmitted parasites in lower numbers, whereas both trophically and free-living stage-transmitted parasites were equally represented in C. gariepinus in relatively high intensities. The patterns in parasite numbers and composition in the two hosts reflect differences in fish habitat use and diet. A shift in parasite composition from monoxenous species-dominated communities in small-sized fish to heteroxenous in large fishes was recorded in both hosts. This was linked to ontogenetic feeding changes and prolonged exposure to parasites. Polyculture systems showed no effect on parasite intensity and composition. The gills were highly parasitized, mainly by protozoans and monogeneans. Generally, the occurrence and diversity of parasites in these fish species highlight the likelihood of disease outbreak in the proposed intensive aquaculture systems. This calls for raising awareness in fish health management among potential farmers, service providers and researchers.  相似文献

The metazoan parasites and stomach contents of the small-sized demersal fishes Agonus cataphractus, Buglossidium luteum, Callionymus lyra and Rhinonemus cimbrius were studied and analysed. The fishes were captured using various sampling gears at 12 stations in the central North Sea. A total of 16 metazoan parasite species were isolated: six adult Digenea, three larval and adult Cestoda, four larval and adult Nematoda and three larval and adult Crustacea. With nine parasites species each, A. cataphractus and R. cimbrius harboured the highest parasite diversity, while B. luteum and C. lyra hosted only six and five parasite species, respectively. Eighteen new hosts and four new locality records were established. No Myxozoa, Monogenea or Acanthocephala were found. Most of the detected parasites showed a wide geographical range and a low host-specificity. The composition of the parasite fauna differed between the fish species, in accordance with their different feeding behaviours. The diet of bentho-pelagic feeders (A. cataphractus, R. cimbrius) was more diverse in comparison with the more specialised benthic feeders (C. lyra, B. luteum). This correlated with the lower diversity of heteroxenic parasites within both small-sized benthic fish species.  相似文献

A total of 38 Coryphaenoides mediterraneus from the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone (CGFZ), a part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), was studied for parasites and feeding ecology. Sixteen different parasite species were found, most of them belonging to the Digenea (6 species) and Nematoda (6). Twelve new host and 11 new locality records were established, and 8 deep-sea generalists and 5 deep-sea specialists were found. Twelve adult and 3 larval parasites occurred, with Allopodocotyle margolisi (Digenea), Tetraphyllidea indet. (Scolex pleuronectis, Cestoda) and Ascarophis longiovata (Nematoda) being the predominant species. These parasites reached a prevalence of 50.0%, 86.8% and 68.4% with an intensity of infection of 1–10, 1–91 and 1–74, respectively. The food consisted of crustaceans and cephalopods; no further prey items such as fish could be identified. Coryphaenoides mediterraneus demonstrates a parasite fauna similar to that of other deep-sea macrourids. No MAR-specific parasite species were found, and the collected helminths are common fish parasites of the North Atlantic deep-sea basin and the adjacent continental shelf regions. Only few larval epipelagic generalists such as ascaridoid nematodes were found, due to the deep origin of the studied fish between 1700–3500 m. The recorded species rich parasite fauna reflects the wide depth range and opportunistic feeding behaviour of C. mediterraneus on benthopelagic food. The recorded parasite species composition around the MAR appears to be similar to other deep-sea locations in the Atlantic Ocean, demonstrating the wide zoogeographical distribution of these deep-sea metazoans. Consequences of the MAR, the CGFZ and the homogeneous deep-sea environmental conditions for the parasite species distribution are discussed.  相似文献

An extensive survey of helminth parasites in fish species from Tres Palos Lagoon, in Guerrero, Mexico, resulted in identification of 39 metazoan parasite species (37 helminth and 2 crustaceans) in 13 fish species (n = 1,498). Specimen collection in this coastal lagoon was done between April 2000 and November 2003. Digenean species (18, 8 adult and 10 metacercariae) dominated the parasite fauna. The most widespread species of parasite were: Contracaecum sp. (Nematoda), Pseudoacanthostomum panamense, Austrodiplostomum compactum, Ascocotye (Phagicola) longa (Digenea), Neoechinorhynchus golvani (Acanthocephala), Ergasilus sp. (Copepoda), and Argulus sp. (Branchiura). Parasite fauna species composition exhibited a clear freshwater influence as 56.4% (22 of 39) of the identified species have a freshwater distribution in Mexico. For 32 of the parasite species, this report constitutes the first geographical host record for Tres Palos Lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico.  相似文献

The fatty acid fingerprints of total lipid extracts from the four fish parasitesAcanthocephalus lucii, Neoechinorhynchus rutili, Paratenuisentis ambiguus, andPomphorhynchus laevis were investigated by capillary gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). The fatty acid patterns of the parasites were compared with those of their respective host tissue, viz., intestinal tract tissue of infected perch, brown trout, eel, and chub. The highly complex gas chromatograms revealed significant differences not only between parasite and host tissue but also between the parasites themselves. For instance, all the parasites contained much more eicosapentaenoic acid (205n-3) than did the respective fish intestinal tissue. Differences were also observed between the presoma and metasoma ofPomphorhynchus laevis.  相似文献

Spatial heterogeneity is a feature common to many ecosystems. Aquatic organisms typically exhibit this heterogeneous distribution but to date little is known about the distribution of many common parasite species within water bodies. In this study the distribution of Argulus foliaceus (L.), an ectoparasitic crustacean, on different sized hosts within a mixed species fish community was determined. Different fish species exhibited differences in their louse burdens (prevalence and intensity). The highest prevalence of A. foliaceus was observed on fish species dominated by larger individuals (i.e. Cyprinus carpio, Abramis brama and Tinca tinca). C. carpio and A. brama also exhibited the highest mean louse intensities. Infested fish were generally heavier than uninfested conspecifics. Differences in the weight of uninfested and infested fish were significant (P<0.05) for the whole fish community samples and the Scardinius erythrophthalmus, A. brama and C. carpio samples. There was also a general pattern of increasing infestation intensity with an increase in host body weight, with significant correlations for the whole fish community for S. erythrophthalmus, A. brama and C. carpio samples. In addition there were significant differences in parasite prevalence and intensity between different host weight groups and larger (heavier) fish appeared to be more prone to infestation by A. foliaceus.  相似文献

The uptake of lead by cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis in naturally infected amphipods, Gammarus pulex, and by immature parasites in experimentally infected fish, Leuciscus cephalus, was examined following 3-week experimental exposures (0.01 and 0.1 mg l−1 Pb2+). Both G. pulex and the cystacanths of P. laevis accumulated lead but concentrations in the parasites were lower than in the host tissues at the low lead dose and significantly lower at the high dose. P. laevis from chub exposed to 0.01 mg l−1 lead contained significantly more of the metal than the tissues of their host. Interestingly, there was an increase in the mean lead levels in the parasites from the control chubs which was concurrent with a decrease in host tissue concentrations. The results of this experimental study therefore confirm previous suggestions that heavy metals are predominantly accumulated by acanthocephalans inside the fish definitive host and not by␣cystacanths in the haemocoel of the amphipod intermediate host. The microhabitat of the parasite is therefore of primary importance rather than its developmental stage. Furthermore, metal concentrations in adult acanthocephalans will respond rapidly to changes in environmental exposure of their hosts. Received: 15 November 1997 / Accepted: 11 February 1998  相似文献

Sixty-one specimens of the piranha Serrasalmus marginatus Valenciennes, 1837 were analyzed, aiming at assessing the community structure of their gill parasites. The samples were collected in lagoons of the Paraná, Ivinheima and Baia Subsystems within the Upper Paraná River Floodplain (Brazil). Host size and sex had little or no influence on the abundance and prevalence of parasites. The organization of the gill parasite infracommunities of S. marginatus was significantly non-random according to null models and ordination analyses. In general, parasite infrapopulations were not affected by interspecific associations or host characteristics (e.g. size, sex), what highlights the importance of local habitat characteristics to community organization of gill parasites of S. marginatus in the Upper Paraná River Floodplain.  相似文献

The peacock grouper (Cephalopholis argus) was intentionally introduced to the Hawaiian coastal waters 50 years ago to enhance the local fisheries. Following introduction, this species spread rapidly and became extremely abundant. A comparison of the metazoan parasite community of C. argus was performed between its native range (Moorea Island, French Polynesia) and its introduced range (Oahu and Big Island, Hawaii). Polynesian groupers were infected with a highly diversified parasite community whereas Hawaiian groupers exhibited a depauperate ensemble of parasite species, C. argus having lost most of the parasites common in their native range. Interestingly, the grouper has not acquired new parasites present in Hawaiian waters. This study provides the first field evidence of significant parasite release in a wild but previously introduced fish in coral reefs and is discussed in relation to the Enemy-Release Hypothesis which has never been assessed in those ecosystems.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of parasite communities from teleost fishes (Diplodus vulgaris, Mullus surmuletus, Pagellus erythrinus, Phycis phycis, Scorpaena scrofa and Symphodus tinca) was studied in the Bonifacio Strait Marine Reserve (Corsica Island) with different protection levels. Canonical correspondence analysis was used to study spatial patterns and to quantify the importance of site influence on parasite communities. To supplement these results, we used the indicator species analysis (Indval) to identify parasite species as bioindicators of a given ecosystem. Moreover, fish spatial distribution in the marine reserve was evaluated in order to link parasite species occurrence and fish abundance. Several parasite species were associated with a specific site, and some of them were considered as site bioindicators, especially in the western part of the protected area (Bruzzi and Moines Islands). However, the relative abundance of fish followed a different spatial pattern. Stronger fish abundance was observed in the eastern part of the reserve (Lavezzi Islands). The parasite species were correlated to sites inside as well outside the reserve. The parasite distribution seemed not to be influenced by the protection status of the site. Furthermore, in our study, most of the parasite species were not linked to a site. The most important factor influencing their distribution was host specificity. This suggested that the parasite life traits history remained a fundamental determinant in the community composition.  相似文献

In Lake Naivasha, the common carp Cyprinus carpio L. 1758 was accidentally introduced from fish farms adjacent to River Malewa in 1999 and now forms the bulk of the total fish caught. Since its introduction, no study has been made on its parasitic community nor are there any reports on ectoparasites from other fish species in this lake to the best of our knowledge. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the parasitic community of C. carpio and two other commercially important fish species: Oreochromis leucostictus and Tilapia zillii. Additionally, the abundant Barbus paludinosus was included in the study. A total of 286 fish (145C. carpio, 56 O. leucostictus, 18?T. zillii, and 67 B. paludinosus) were collected during the year 2011 and examined. Ten taxa of parasites were recovered from C. carpio dominated by the monogenean Dactylogyrus minutus, occurring with a prevalence (p) of 99.3 %. Thirteen taxa of parasites were identified from O. leucostictus dominated by monogeneans Cichlidogyrus spp. (p?=?91.1 %). T. zillii harbored nine taxa of parasites with the digenean Tylodelphys sp. (p?=?83.3 %) being dominant and B. paludinosus harbored 11 taxa of parasites dominated by an unidentified monogenean of the genus Dactylogyrus (p?=?83.6 %). C. carpio had the lowest helminth species diversity and richness while monogenetic trematodes, which have never been reported from fish in Lake Naivasha, were the most prevalent parasites recovered.  相似文献

Species richness and composition were determined for parasite communities in the black snook Centropomus nigrescens collected from five coastal lagoons in the Guerrero state, Mexico. A total of 354 fish were collected between December 2007 and November 2008. Twenty-four species of parasite were identified: 2 monogeneans, 12 digeneans, 4 acanthocephalans, 1 cestode, 4 nematodes, and 1 pentastomid. The communities consisted mainly of autogenic parasites, and all were dominated by the digenean Paracrytogonimus yamagutii. Community species composition was similar among lagoons, although the influence of local conditions prevented them from being identical. Host traits such as predator feeding habits, body size, and vagility contributed to parasite community structure and species composition.  相似文献

The metazoan parasite fauna and feeding ecology of 165 Sprattus sprattus (L., 1758) was studied from different geographic regions (Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, Bay of Biscay, Mediterranean Sea). A total of 13 metazoan parasite species were identified including six Digenea, one Monogenea, two Cestoda, two Nematoda and two Crustacea. Didymozoidae indet., Lecithocladium excisum and Bomolochidae indet. represent new host records. The parasite species richness differed according to regions and ranged between 3 and 10. The most species-rich parasite fauna was recorded for sprats from the Bay of Biscay (North Atlantic), and the fishes from the Baltic Sea contained the lowest number of parasite species. More closely connected geographical regions, the North Sea, English Channel and Bay of Biscay, showed more similar parasite component communities compared with more distant regions. From the examined stomachs of S. sprattus, a total of 11 different prey items were identified, including Mollusca, Annelida, Crustacea and Tunicata. The highest number of prey organisms belonged to the crustaceans. The variety of prey items in the stomach was reflected by the parasite community differences and parasite species richness from the different regions. The feeding ecology of the fish at the sampled localities was responsible for the observed parasite composition and, secondarily, the zoogeographical distribution of the parasites, questioning the use of the recorded sprat parasites as biological indicators for environmental conditions and change.  相似文献

Eleven parasite taxa were found infecting 68 Atlantic chub mackerel, Scomber colias Gmelin, 1789 from the Canary Islands, Central North Atlantic. The most abundant parasites were the gill monogenean Pseudokuhnia minor (P = 54.4%), larval anisakid nematodes (P = 11.8%) in the body cavity, a larval tetraphyllidean infecting bile ducts (P = 8.8%) and didymozoid digeneans infecting the gills (P = 7.4%). No correlation between fish length and abundance of infection with these parasites was found. Within the Atlantic, the comparison of present results with previous reports on the occurrence of parasites in this fish host, might suggest that there is more than one population unit of Atlantic chub mackerel in the Eastern Atlantic.  相似文献
