Female mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed diets containing 5, 10, or 20 ppm mercury as methylmercury chloride. One egg was collected from each bird before the start of the mercury diets and 15 eggs were collected from each bird while it was being fed mercury. The mercury diets were then replaced by uncontaminated diets, and each female was allowed to lay 29 more eggs. Mercury levels in eggs rose to about 7, 18, and 35 ppm wet-weight in females fed 5, 10, or 20 ppm mercury, respectively. Mercury levels fell to about 0.16, 0.80, and 1.7 ppm in the last egg laid by birds that had earlier been fed 5, 10, or 20 ppm mercury, respectively. Higher concentrations of mercury were found in egg albumen than in yolk, and between 95 and 100% of the mercury in the eggs was in the form of methylmercury.  相似文献

The effect of exposing White Leghorn hens for six weeks to 50 ppm of Aroclor 1254 in water was investigated. While egg production decreased temporarily, no significant effects were noted on egg weights or fertility. Incubation of eggs from exposed hens indicated that this polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) did not interfere with gametogenesis and fertilization. As Aroclor 1254 accumulated in the yolk, however, embryonic development was arrested at progressively earlier developmental stages. When PCB was removed from the water there was an initial rapid decline in the PCB content of the yolk and a slow return of the normal developmental pattern of the embryo. Leg, toe, and neck deformities were present in many of the chicks hatched from eggs in which yolk PCB level was 10–15 ppm or more. The gross appearance of the liver and the presence of hemorrhages suggest that the liver and the vascular elements may be targets for PCB action.  相似文献

Laying hens fed 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, 24,24-difluoro-25-hydroxycholecalciferol, 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol or 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol were used to investigate whether hydroxylation of C-24 of cholecalciferol is necessary for normal embryonic development in chickens. Laying hens were fed a rachitogenic diet and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol from hatching until normal egg production, fertility and hatchability were achieved. When the hens were 40 weeks old, 25-hydroxycholecalciferol was withdrawn and egg production ceased in 4 weeks. The hens were divided into 6 groups of 5 and dosed daily for 19 weeks with either 2.0 micrograms of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol, 2.0 micrograms of 24,24-difluoro-25-hydroxycholecalciferol, 0.4 microgram of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, 2.0 micrograms of 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, both 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol and 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol or vehicle only. Egg production during this period was high for all hens fed the cholecalciferol compounds. Egg production of 3% occurred in hens given vehicle only. Fertility was over 90% for all groups of cholecalciferol compound-fed hens. Hatchability of over 90% was achieved with the eggs from hens given 25-hydroxycholecalciferol or 24,24-difluoro-25-hydroxycholecalciferol and 6% with eggs from hens fed both 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol and 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol. No eggs from hens fed 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol or 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol alone hatched (over 140 eggs in each group.  相似文献

Forty-four pairs of game-farm mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed ABATE® 4E (temephos) to yield 0, 1, or 10 ppm ABATE® beginning before the initiation of lay, and terminating when ducklings were 21 days of age. The mean interval between eggs laid was greater for hens fed 10 ppm ABATE® than for controls. Clutch size, fertility, hatchability, nest attentiveness of incubating hens, and avoidance behavior of ducklings were not significantly affected by ABATE® ingestion. The percentage survival of ducklings to 21 days of age was significantly lower in both treated groups than in controls, but brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was not inhibited in young which died before termination of the study. In 21-day-old ducklings, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity increased and plasma nonspecific cholinesterase (ChE) activity was inhibited by about 20% in both treatment groups, but there were no significant differences in brain AChE or plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities, or plasma uric acid concentration. Clinical chemistry values of adults were not affected. No ABATE®, ABATE® sulfoxide, or ABATE® sulfone residues were found in eggs or tissue samples.  相似文献

Aroclor® 1248 was fed to captive screech owls (Otus asio) at the rate of three ppm in the diet to determine if reproductive effects such as fewer eggs per clutch, lower hatchability, malformation of the chicks, or higher mortality rates of chicks would appear in this raptorial species as they did in chickens. There were no effects on eggshell thickness, number of eggs laid, young hatched, and young fledged from feeding a low level of Aroclor® 1248 to captive screech owls. The polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) residues found in the eggs of the dosed birds ranged from 3.9 ppm to 17.8 ppm. Background PCB residues in the diet of all experimental birds ranged from non-detected to 0.62 ppm.  相似文献

Adult mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed South Louisiana crude oil as 0.25 and 2.5% of the total diet for 26 weeks to assess the chronic effects of oil ingestion. Additional birds were fed diets containing either 1.0% of a paraffin mixture or clean feed. No birds died during the study, nor were their body weights significantly depressed. Oviduct weight at necropsy was greatly reduced in hens on the 2.5% oil diet and also was significantly reduced in hens on the 0.25% oil diet when compared with controls. Male reproductive organs were not atrophied by treatment. Hens on oil-treated diets laid fewer eggs than those on the control diet; however, eggs from treated hens hatched as well as those from controls when artificially incubated. Pathological or biochemical alterations were no greater in the treated birds than in controls.  相似文献

Adult female mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed a control diet or diets containing 1 ppm methylmercury chloride, 5 ppm methylmercury chloride, 1 ppm methylmercury chloride plus 5 ppm DDE, or 5 ppm methylmercury chloride plus 5 ppm DDE. The presence of DDE in the diet did not affect retention of mercury in breast muscle or eggs. There was a good correlation between the levels of mercury in the breast muscle of females and their eggs, and this correlation was unaffected by the presence of DDE in the diet. This correlation suggests that one could predict mercury levels in female mallards in the field when only eggs have been collected and vice versa.  相似文献

Mono-ortho PCBs are global contaminants of wildlife with the potential to produce toxicity by an aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)–mediated mechanism. To determine the potency of 2,3,3′,4,4′-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 105) for producing reproductive and developmental toxicity, adult ring-necked pheasant hens (Phasianus colchicus) were orally dosed with 0, 0.06, 0.6, or 6 mg PCB 105/kg hen/week for 10 weeks to achieve cumulative doses of 0, 0.6, 6, or 60 mg PCB 105/kg hen after which hens were bred with untreated roosters once per week for 8 weeks. Except at week 6 of the egg-laying period when cumulative egg production in the 6 mg PCB 105/kg hen group was greater than controls, fertilized egg production was not significantly different between treatment groups. Embryo mortality and chick mortality were not significantly different between treatment groups. Total body and heart weights of all chicks 1 day posthatch (dph) were not different between groups, however, liver weights of chicks from the 60 mg/kg treatment group were greater than controls at 1 dph. The first chick to hatch from each hen was reared to 21 dph and among these birds, the total body, liver, and heart weights were not different between groups. There were no dose-related malformations of the beak or limbs, and no signs of subcutaneous edema, ascites, or pericardial edema in chicks at 1 or 21 dph. Hepatic microsomal monooxygenase activities [ethoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (EROD), benzyloxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (BROD), and methyloxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (MROD)] were significantly elevated in chicks at 1 dph from hens given a cumulative PCB 105 dose of 6 mg/kg and in chicks at 21 dph from hens given a cumulative PCB dose of 60 mg/kg. These results indicate that a cumulative PCB 105 dose up to 60 mg/kg hen does not decrease the production of fertilized eggs or increase embryo or chick mortality in ring-necked pheasants, but does increase chick hepatic monooxygenase activity. Eighty pairs of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed an uncontaminated diet until each female had laid 15 eggs. After each female had laid her 15th egg, the pair was randomly assigned to a control diet or diets containing 5, 10, or 20 μg/g mercury as methylmercury until she had laid a second set of 15 eggs. There were 20 pairs in each group. After the second set of 15 eggs, the pair was returned to an uncontaminated diet, and the female was permitted to lay another 30 eggs. For those pairs fed the mercury diets, the even-numbered eggs were incubated and the odd-numbered eggs were saved for possible mercury analysis. Mercury in the even-numbered eggs was estimated as the average of what was in the neighboring odd-numbered eggs. Neurological signs of methylmercury poisoning were observed in ducklings that hatched from eggs containing as little as 2.3 μg/g estimated mercury on a wet-weight basis, and deformities were seen in embryos from eggs containing about 1 μg/g estimated mercury. Although embryo mortality was seen in eggs estimated to contain as little as 0.74 μg/g mercury, there were considerable differences in the sensitivity of mallard embryos, especially from different parents, with some embryos surviving as much as 30 or more μg/g mercury in the egg. Summary Sixty Leghorn hens were randomly divided into 5 groups of 12 and individually fed a control diet, or diets containing 10 and 20 ppm dieldrin, or diets containing 100 and 200 ppm p,p-DDT for a 12-week period. Average egg production per bird, egg weight, dry shell weight, shell thickness (not including membranes), and shell calcium were not affected by feeding the insecticides. In addition, the length of the clutch or the number of clutches during the 12-week period were not affected. Summary Mallard ducks were fed a control diet or a diet containing 0.5 or 3 ppm mercury (as methylmercury dicyandiamide) based on the dry feed. These mercury diets are approximately equivalent to 0.1 and 0.6 ppm mercury in a natural succulent diet. I measured for the ducklings the approach behavior in response to a tape-recorded maternal call and the avoidance of a frightening stimulus.There were no significant differences among controls and ducklings from mercury-treated parents in the percentage of ducklings that approached the tape-recorded call. Control ducklings, however, moved back and forth toward the call more than ducklings from mercury-treated parents and also spent more time in the end of the runway near the loudspeaker than ducklings whose parents were fed a diet containing 0.5 ppm mercury.Compared to control ducklings, ducklings from parents fed a diet containing 0.5 or 3 ppm mercury were hyper-responsive in the test of avoidance of a frightening stimulus.Mallard eggs collected in the wild have been found to contain levels of mercury exceeding the 1 ppm (wet-weight) found in the eggs of hens fed a diet containing 0.5 ppm, but there are no reports of mallard eggs collected in the wild that were found to contain as much mercury (6 to 9 ppm) as eggs from hens fed a diet containing 3 ppm mercury. On a dry-weight basis, the concentration of mercury in the eggs was about 6 times as great as that in the feed for ducks fed the 0.5 ppm mercury diet and about 6 to 9 times as great for ducks fed the 3 ppm mercury diet.  相似文献

Ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) were brought into breeding condition and, after laying two clutches of two eggs each, were fed one of three experimental diets containing either 33.4 ppm dicofol (1, 1-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trichioroethanol), 37 ppmp,pi DDE (2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl)-1,1 dichloroethylene), or no toxicant (control). Mean shell thicknesses of eggs produced on experimental diets were: control, 156 x; DDE, 145 ; and dicofol 142 . Birds fed DDE produced eggs with shells a mean 5.6% thinner than pre-treatment eggs, while birds fed dicofol produced eggs with shell means 7.2% thinner. No change in shell thickness was found in eggs from control doves. Analysis of covariance revealed a statistically significant effect of decreasing eggshell thickness over time in doves fed DDE and dicofol diets but not in control birds. Egg production was significantly lower in both dicofol-fed and DDE-fed birds when compared with controls. Control birds produced a mean of 1.97 eggs per clutch. Dicofol- and DDE-treated birds produced 1.88 and 1.79 eggs per clutch, respectively. The proportion of eggs found cracked or broken in the nest was greatest in birds fed dicofol, with 16.9% of all eggs broken or cracked, compared to 7.9% of eggs from the DDE group and 5.7% of eggs from control group. Selected eggs were analyzed for residues of dicofol, dichlorobenzophenone (DCBP), and DDE in the yolk. For the birds fed the dicofol diet, DDE residues in treatment eggs ranged from 0.036 to 0.119 ppm wet weight. DDE residues in pre-treatment eggs ranged from 0.013 to 0.080 ppm. Dicofol residues ranged from 2.62 ppm to 22.58 ppm. DCBP residues ranged from 2.55 to 17.68 ppm. Only residues of dicofol showed a significant correlation with percent shell thinning.  相似文献

Separate subchronic reproductive toxicity studies were conducted using mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). Three groups (32/group; 16 male-female pairs) of 17-week-old ducks (F0 generation) were fed Purina Game Bird Breeder Layena diets containing mean (+/-SD) 33.2 (+/-2.7), 68.9 (+/-1.8), and 140.9 (+/-5.1) microg/g strychnine for 20 weeks, with some pairs in each group fed control diet during a subsequent 3-week recovery period. Three groups (32/group; 16 male-female pairs) of 19-week-old quail (F0 generation) were fed similar diets containing mean (+/-SD) 279.2 (+/-10.1), 557.4 (+/-43.5), and 1,113.6 (+/-46.6) microg/g strychnine for 22 weeks without a recovery period. Separate groups of ducks and quail (32/group; 16 male-female pairs) were also fed control diets (0.0 microg/g strychnine) in each study. There were 16 weekly collections of eggs for the mallard study (13 for the diet-exposure period and 3 for the recovery period), and 11 collections for the quail study. Eggs laid during the last 13 and 10 weeks of the diet-exposure periods for ducks (plus 3 weeks of the recovery period) and quail, respectively, were incubated. Each hatch of F1 generation ducklings and chicks was observed for 14 days. Key results were: (1) the no observed adverse effect levels (NOAELs) for F0 ducks and quail were 33.2 and 1,113.6 microg/g strychnine, respectively--quail showed no reproductive effects at the current doses; (2) decreased egg production and hatching success occurred for mallard hens fed mean 140.9 microg/g strychnine diets; and (3) "normal-hatching" ducklings from eggs of F0 mallards fed mean 140.9 microg/g strychnine diets suffered greater mortality than ducklings from the other diet groups. Possible mechanisms of strychnine action on avian reproduction are discussed.  相似文献

The influence of maternal versus dietary sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) deposited to eggs of ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) was investigated. Mature birds that lay a clutch of two eggs every 12 to 15 d were fed a diet of pellets spiked with 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexacholorobiphenyl (unlabelled isotope designated as [12C]PCB153) for 25 d. The birds were subsequently switched to a diet containing isotopically labeled [U-13C12]PCB153 at similar concentrations for an additional 63 d. The toxicokinetics of [12C]PCB153 and [13C]PCB153 were followed in egg and carcass samples with time. Isotopic ratios of PCB153 in yolk lipids were identical to those in carcass lipids after introduction of diet 2, and they did not resemble those of the food at the time of egg formation. The data indicate that the PCB composition of eggs directly reflects the composition of maternal tissues, not the diet, at the time of yolk formation. Egg yolk:carcass lipid concentration ratios for the two isotopes were significantly less than one, averaging 0.33+/-0.02 (mean +/- standard error). Lipid normalized egg:maternal tissue contaminant concentration ratios for persistent organochlorine chemicals in the literature were reviewed for other avian species. The results provide a preliminary data set that suggests egg:maternal tissue contaminant concentration ratios vary among species, particularly among species that invest different quantities of lipids to a clutch of eggs. The results support the hypothesis that dilution of contaminants in egg lipids relative to maternal lipids is related to the reproductive strategy employed by the species.  相似文献

Captive black ducks (anas rubripes) were fed dietary DDE [1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl)ethylene] at 10 ppm (dry weight; about 2 ppm on a natural diet basis) for 2 breeding seasons, then untreated feed for 2 succeeding years. Residues of DDE in the carcasses of adults declined 90% during the 2-year clean-up period. Following 2 years of dietary DDE, mean residues in eggs reached 64.9 ppm. Even after 2 years on clean feed, DDE residues in the eggs averaged 6.2 ppm or 9.5% of the mean DDE level reached after 2 years on treated feed. Shells of eggs from treated hens were about 20% thinner than shells of eggs from controls. Stoppage of DDE dosage resulted in progressively thicker shells, yet even after 2 years on untreated feed hens laid eggs with shells about 10% thinner than control hens. After DDE was removed from the diet, DDE residues in the eggs decreased, shell thickness increased, and reproductive success improved. Hens previously exposed to DDE, but then fed clean feed for 2 years, still produced significantly fewer surviving ducklings than did control hens.  相似文献

Reported avian maternal transfer rates of organochlorine contaminants range from 1% to as much as 20% of maternal body burdens. However, to our knowledge, no investigation of factors governing maternal transfer has been reported. Here, we report an investigation of maternal transfer of 2,3,3',4,4'-pentachlorinated biphenyl (PCB 105), 2,3,3',4,4',5-hexachlorinated biphenyl (PCB 156), 2,3,3',4,4',5,5'-heptachlorinated biphenyl (PCB 189), and technical-grade endosulfan into eggs by white leghorn chickens (Gallus domesticus). Two experiments were performed to evaluate individual chemical excretion into eggs when hens were injected with each chemical individually (experiment one) or with a mixture of all four chemicals (experiment two). Each hen was injected subcutaneously every 4 d during a 21-d period with 100 microliters of the dosing solution during both experiments. The mass of each chemical excreted into the egg was compared among eggs and with the mass injected into hens to determine the influence of chemical structure (experiment one) and interaction (experiment two) on maternal transfer of those chemicals into eggs. Maternal transfer of PCBs was inversely related to congener chlorination. The congener mass in eggs, as a percentage of the mass injected into hens, was 0.42% for PCB 189, 0.54% for PCB 156, and 0.61% for PCB 105. In experiment two, absolute excretion of only PCB 189 and alpha-endosulfan into eggs was affected by the presence of other chemicals. Excretion of PCB 189 (0.51%) and alpha-endosulfan (0.03%) increased and decreased, respectively, compared with when they were individually injected into hens during experiment one. Lastly, much less of the more metabolically susceptible endosulfan (0.04-0.12% of the mass injected) was excreted into the egg relative to PCBs, despite being injected into the hens at concentrations comparable with those of PCBs, suggesting, at least in avian species, lower maternal transfer of more metabolically susceptible chemicals.  相似文献

Summary Mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) were sacrificed one month after ingesting one number 4 all-lead shot or one number 4 lead-iron shot. Livers, kidneys, blood, wingbones, and eggs were analyzed for lead by atomic absorption.Necropsy of sacrificed ducks failed to reveal any of the tissue lesions usually associated with lead poisoning in waterfowl. Lead levels in ducks given all-lead shot averaged about twice those in ducks given lead-iron shot, reflecting the amount of lead in the two types of shot. Lead in the blood of ducks dosed with all-lead shot averaged 0.64 ppm, and 0.28 ppm in ducks given lead-iron shot. Lead residues in livers and kidneys of females given all-lead shot were significantly higher than in males. In both dosed groups, lead levels in wingbones of females were about 10 times those in males, and were significantly correlated with the number of eggs laid after dosage. Lead levels in contents and shells of eggs laid by hens dosed with all-lead shot were about twice those in eggs laid by hens dosed with lead-iron shot. Eggshells were found to best reflect levels of lead in the blood.Our results indicate that mallards maintained on a balanced diet and dosed with one lead shot may not accumulate extremely high lead levels in the liver and kidney. However, extremely high lead deposition may result in the bone of laying hens after ingesting sublethal amounts of lead shot as a result of mobilization of calcium from the bone during eggshell formation.  相似文献

Summary Two experiments were conducted to establish the effect of dieldrin on survival of chickens during severe dietary restriction. White Leghorn hens were fed rations containing 0, 1, 5, 10, and 20 ppm of dieldrin for 12 weeks. At this time, dieldrin had accumulated in the body fat in direct proportion to the amount fed. During subsequent feed restriction, survival of hens fed 10 or 20 ppm dieldrin was significantly shorter than that of hens fed 0, 1, or 5 ppm dieldrin. Dieldrin concentration in blood declined during the first and second weeks following feed removal, then it increased. Blood sampling was terminated at the end of 4 weeks because nearly all hens had died, but dieldrin concentration in the blood had not increased appreciably over the concentration observed in blood at the time that feed was removed.Published with the approval of the Director of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station as Journal Article No. 227.  相似文献

Adult mallard ducks fed 0, 2, 20, or 200 ppm of cadmium chloride in the diet were sacrificed at 30-day intervals and tissues were analyzed for cadmium. No birds died during the study and body weights did not change. The liver and kidney accumulated the highest levels of cadmium. Tissue residues were significantly correlated in all treatment groups and residues increased with treatment level. Hematocrits and hemoglobin concentrations were normal in all groups throughout the study. Little cadmium accumulated in eggs of laying hens, but egg production was suppressed in the group fed 200 ppm.  相似文献

Summary Laying hens were fed a total of 18 mg of dieldrin over an 11-day period. Some of these were fed charcoal and others received phenobarbital during the 11-day period. Neither treatment affected the amount of dieldrin residue in the eggs. The maximum dieldrin residue in the eggs was about 4 ppm and occurred about 20 days after the initial dosage or about 9 days after cessation of dosage. The dieldrin residue levels in the livers ranged from 0 to 228 ppb and the brains contained no dieldrin residue. No change in shell thickness of the eggs or weights of the chickens was noted.  相似文献
