This research reports the first data on mercury levels found in Giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) from South America. Mercury concentrations were analyzed from different organs/tissues of two animals found dead floating on the water of the Rio Negro in the Pantanal, Brazil. The mean mercury concentration ranged from 2.94 to 3.68 microg/g in hair, from 1.52 to 4.3 microg/g in liver, and from 1.11 to 4.59 microg/g in kidney and was 0.17 microg/g in muscle samples. In comparison with other research, there is no evidence of contamination in these animals and mercury concentrations in tissues appeared to be at levels below those associated with toxicity.  相似文献

From an ambiguous/complex standpoint, the fragility/strength of human life suggests an approach based on observations of the life-style dynamics of specific population groups. Conducted between 2003 and 2005, this study of a community living alongside the Pantanal Wetlands Private Natural Heritage Reserve established by the Social Enterprise Support Centre (RPPN/ SESC) in the Joselandia Rural District, Bar?o de Melga?o Municipality, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, explores its life-style, linking explanations of the health/disease process to historical, economic and social aspects of this community and the singularity of local healing practices, using historical documentary records, statements from local residents, a population poll, interviews and observations. Changes were noted in the links of solidarity among community members at work and for growing food. Healing practices based on folk-medicine are alternatives used to relieve symptoms and diseases. The fragility/strength of this specific community is established through strength based on solidarity and family ties, while its fragility is due to difficulties in accessing work, healthcare services and public facilities.  相似文献

This paper analyzes factors affecting the risk of malaria among individuals working in wildcat gold mining camps (garimpos) in northern Mato Grosso State in the Brazilian Amazon. Historically, such mining camps have the locations with the highest malaria prevalence in the Brazilian Amazon. However, little attention has focused on understanding the disease from the internal perspective of the mining camps themselves, such as the mining population's characteristics and its spatial organization. This paper adopts a stepwise logistic model to identify spatial, occupational-exposure, and cultural factors that affect malaria prevalence. According to the results, differences among individuals working and/or living in the gold mining areas could produce different exposure to the disease and thus to different risk of malaria prevalence. Understanding these differences may provide an important tool for identifying risk profiles in the gold mining and related population and for informing programs for prevention and treatment of malaria in the Amazon.  相似文献

Mercury persistence in indoor environments in the Amazon region, Brazil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We evaluated the indoor atmospheric Hg contamination in gold trade shops in two Brazilian cities of the Legal Amazon area using the Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides, Bromeliaceae) as a sentinel species. Plants inside plastic cages were exposed to a controlled atmosphere to evaluate the rate of Hg retention over time and then distributed in several stores with different characteristics to enable a relative comparison. Hg concentrations were determined by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Plants exposed in active stores with good air circulation exhibited lower levels. Ex-gold trade shops that were kept closed for long periods exhibited higher values. Stores that have been restored before being transformed into new businesses exhibited lower values than nonrestored ones. Direct measurements suggest that indoor Hg air concentrations were below the threshold limit recommended by the World Health Organization to occupational exposure; nevertheless, restoring ex-gold trade shops could ensure a healthier working environment.  相似文献

We associated Laguna Negra virus with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in Mato Grosso State, Brazil, and a previously unidentified potential host, the Calomys callidus rodent. Genetic testing revealed homologous sequencing in specimens from 20 humans and 8 mice. Further epidemiologic studies may lead to control of HPS in Mato Grosso State.  相似文献

Prevalence of suicide with pesticides in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, was evaluated based on data from the Integrated State Center for Toxicological Surveillance under the State Health Department and reported from January 1992 to December 2002. Population and crop production data were collected from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, and suicide data were obtained from the State Health Department. During the period studied, 1,355 cases of pesticide poisoning were reported, including 506 suicide attempts, resulting in 139 deaths. The regions of Campo Grande and Dourados had the highest prevalence of suicide attempts, with Dourados having the most deaths. Dourados also had a high prevalence of suicide attempts overall, with an increasing trend in the previous 10 years. The results indicated that Dourados is a critical region in the State in terms of intentional ingestion of pesticides, showing the need for an epidemiological investigation to better evaluate and quantify these events among the rural population.  相似文献

DDT was used intensively in vector control programs in Mato Grosso State until 1997. The present study aimed to determine DDT concentrations in blood samples from Brazilian National Health Foundation workers in Mato Grosso. Blood samples were analyzed from 41 sprayers, 20 drivers, and 14 unexposed workers, collected in June 1999 and October 2000 in two regions of the State (Sinop and C ceres). Sprayers and drivers were occupationally exposed, and no significant differences were found in serum DDT levels between these two groups in either region. Likewise, no significant differences were found in p,p'DDE and total DDT levels between C ceres and Sinop. However, p,p'DDT levels were higher in Sinop due to the intensive use of this insecticide in the region in recent years. The two regions together showed the following results: total DDT ranging from 7.50 micro g/L to 875.5 micro g/L (median = 135.5 micro g/L) for sprayers; from 34.5 micro g/L to 562.3 micro g/L (median = 147.7 micro g/L) for drivers; and from undetected to 94.8 micro g/L (median = 22.5 micro g/L) for unexposed workers.  相似文献

This study analyzed oral cancer epidemiology based on histopathology reports from a public laboratory in Mato Grosso, Brazil, after a specific policy was implemented for treating oral and facial diseases in the State. This was a cross-sectional epidemiological study, based on 1,324 histopathology reports issued from January 2005 to December 2006. The study identified 44 cases of oral cancer, or 3% of all oral lesions, and analyzed them in relation to the following variables: histological type, gender, age, and patient's place of residence (capital versus rest of State). The most common histological type was squamous cell carcinoma. Most of the diagnoses occurred in men in their 50s and 60s living in the interior of the State. During two years in operation, this public oral pathology service had recorded a considerable number of oral cancer cases.  相似文献

The damming of Paraná River for the construction of Porto Primavera Hydroelectric Power Plant, between the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Midwestern Brazil and S?o Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, has changed the ecological relationships in the area. The objective of the study was to describe the fauna that can be potential vectors in this reservoir, 2 km away from its right bank, in Bataguassu, Mato Grosso do Sul, before flooding. Mosquitoes were monthly captured in different environments from July 1997 to November 1999. During this period 16,553 adult specimens and 1,795 immature forms were collected with richness of 86 different species of adults and 44 different species of immature forms. The fauna presented a richness that included species of epidemiological importance, as Anopheles darlingi and other mosquitoes with potential for arbovirus transmission.  相似文献

Mercury as a serious health hazard for children in gold mining areas   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In many developing countries, mercury is used to extract gold from ore in small-scale mining areas. Exposure through mercury in these small-scale mining communities is a serious health hazard, especially to the children living and working there. Many children begin working with immediate contact to mercury from the very early age of seven. In Indonesia and Zimbabwe, 166 children were clinically examined for mercury. The mercury concentration in the blood, urine, and hair was analyzed. Compared to the control groups, the exposed children showed typical symptoms of mercury intoxication, such as ataxia. The children working with mercury had high levels of this substance in the various biomonitors. The exposure derives mainly from the liquid mercury used to bind gold, forming an amalgam. The amalgam is heated and the smelting amalgam releases mercury vapor plus the wanted gold. Mercury vapor in contrast to liquid mercury is highly toxic. This elemental, vaporized mercury is the main form of exposure. Since in over 50 countries children live in small-scale gold mining areas and are exposed in a similar way to mercury, immediate action is needed to reduce this severe chemical health hazard for children. Child labor with hazardous substances such as mercury must be stopped.  相似文献

This piece analyzes the funding of the public Unified Health System (UHS) in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, in order to identify the model of care that has been taking shape there since 1994. We studied 16 municipalities, selected according to their size, degree of involvement with the UHS, and socioeconomic and health conditions. We found that between 1994 and 1998 there were large increases in health spending, due to higher municipal expenditures and to rising intergovernmental transfers for outpatient care. However, the health care system taking shape in a large number of Mato Grosso municipalities is increasingly focused on an individual, curative, specialized, and highly technological type of care. Indicative of this trend is the fact that the biggest increases in spending for outpatient care--up to 300% in some municipalities--have come from diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that are of medium or high complexity. Since the resources for health care are limited, and since the model of care adopted by many municipalities continues to shift resources from primary health care to more complex procedures, we believe that the financial viability of the Unified Health System is coming into question. Although this study was limited to the state of Mato Grosso, other Brazilian municipalities are no doubt facing similar situations. The same is probably true for municipalities in other South American countries that have adopted decentralization of the health care system as one of the strategies for State reform.  相似文献

Reports of poisoning and suicide attempts involving pesticides in the micro region of Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, from 1992 to 2002, were evaluated, using data from the Integrated Center for Toxicological Surveillance under the State Health Department. A total of 475 reports were made during the period, of which 261 were accidental or occupational poisonings, 203 suicide attempts, and 11 undetermined. Dourados county had the highest prevalence of pesticide poisoning and suicide attempts per 100,000 inhabitants, considering the rural population, and Fatima do Sul the second highest prevalence of suicides within the micro region. Significant correlations were found between poisoning and suicide (r = 0.60; p < 0.05) and between poisoning and temporary crop area as a percentage of the county's total area (r = 0.68; p < 0.05). Poisoning occurred predominantly in men (87.0%), but the percentage of suicide attempts by men and women were similar (53 and 47.0%, respectively). Poisonings occurred mostly from October to March and the organophosphate insecticides monocrotophos and methamidophos were the main pesticides involved.  相似文献

307 cases were examined to characterize epidemiological aspects of endemic pemphigus foliaceus. The disease was predominantly identified in rural workers between 10 and 42 years old. Incidence was higher in the December, January, February, March and May (average: 30.7 cases/year). Our findings identified a corridor, coinciding with the state watershed.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to stratify priority areas for malaria control in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, based on spatial analysis. The variables used were: Annual Parasite Index (API), Plasmodium falciparum/Plasmodium vivax ratio, population variation, number of families settled, and percent of deforested area. The Moran's I and Local Moran Test were applied, visualized with the Box Map and Moran Map, for 1986- 1991, 1992-1997, and 1998-2003. Box Map identified areas with high, low, and intermediate priority for control, and Moran Map identified municipalities with significant autocorrelation. In the high priority area, located in the North of Mato Grosso, malaria incidence decreased drastically despite the increase in the number of municipalities from the first to the last period. Other municipalities were added to the lower priority area, from the Southeast, Southwest, and Central-South of the State. The intermediate priority area was located along the border with neighboring States and municipalities classified as high and low priority. Spatial analysis showed the importance of the neighboring phenomenon between municipalities in defining priority areas, thus highlighting the technique's advantages for use in malaria control and surveillance.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the spatial distribution of Aedes albopictus population to provide input for developing sampling plans and supporting decision making on the control of this vector in field sampling. METHODS: A study was carried out in an urban area that has a vestige of primary vegetation, 20 km away from Dourados, Midwestern Brazil. Ten samplings were conducted between January 28, 2003 and April 9, 2003, using ovitraps which were monitored once a week, and distributed in a fixed sample area with 10 collection points for each sampling 300 m away from each other. Aggregation indexes were calculated and adjusted to the following theoretical frequency distribution: negative binomial, positive binomial and Poisson's. RESULTS: The sample variance was higher than the sampling mean, resulting in mean-variance indexes above the unit (32.066, 29.410, 14.444, 58.840, 56.042, 111.262, 70.140, 50.701, 93.221 and 8.481). Morisita's index was also statistically above the unit in all samplings (6.275, 3.947, 1.484, 3.725, 3.014, 5.450, 3.214, 3.886, 3.954 and 5.810), and K parameter ranged 0 and 8 (0.174, 0.309, 1.867, 0.332, 0.449, 0.203, 0.408, 0.314, 0.306 and 0.200). The Chi-square test for adjustment to the negative binomial distribution, positive binomial distribution, and Poisson's distribution was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Ae. albopictus population in the studied municipality showed an aggregated standard spatial distribution. This means that when individual vectors are found in a certain site, it is likely that other vectors can be found in the proximities, recommending insecticide spraying for vector control in this site without requiring sampling other sites in this same locality.  相似文献

This retrospective study describes the epidemiological profile of infant mortality in 2000-2002 in 16 counties in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, and evaluates the preventability of such deaths, using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) and the List of Causes of Death Preventable by Interventions in the Setting of the Brazilian Unified National Health System in Children Under Five Years. Perinatal causes accounted for 54.3% of the 1,537 deaths, according to the Mortality Information System; congenital anomalies 14.9%; infectious and parasitic diseases 9.4%; and respiratory disorders 7%. A full 73.1% of deaths were preventable, and most (69.5%) resulted from inadequate prenatal, obstetric, and neonatal care. Additional causes were related to vaccine prevention (0.7%), diagnosis and treatment (10.4%), and health promotion (11.2%). Causes not entirely avoidable accounted for 24.3% of deaths. The findings emphasize the relevance of monitoring adverse maternal-infant conditions and events, particularly to reduce early neonatal mortality (<7 days of life).  相似文献
