The interplay between a prosthetic and tissue represents an important factor for the fixation of orthopedic implants. Laser texturing tests and electropolishing were performed on two materials used in the fabrication of medical devices, i.e., CoCr and Ti6Al4V-ELI alloys. The material surface was textured with a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser and its effect on the surface quality and material modification, under different combinations of laser power and marking speed, were investigated. Our results indicate that an increment of energy per unit length causes an incremental trend in surface roughness parameters. Additionally, phase transformation on the surface of both alloys was achieved. Chemical analysis by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) shows the formation of (Co(Cr,Mo)) phase and the M23C6 precipitate on the CoCr surface; while quantitative analysis of the X-ray diffractometer (XRD) results demonstrates the oxidation of the Ti alloy with the formation of Ti2O and Ti6O from the reduction of the α-Ti phase. The behaviors were both related with an increase of the energy per unit length. Control of the final surface roughness was achieved by an electropolishing post-treatment, minimizing the as-treated values. After polishing, a reduction of surface roughness parameters was obtained in a range between 3% and 44%, while no changes in chemical composition or present phases were observed.  相似文献

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a production method that enables the building of porous structures with a controlled geometry. However, there is a limited control over the final surface of the product. Hence, complementary surface engineering strategies are needed. In this work, design of experiments (DoE) was used to customize post AM surface treatment for 3D selective laser melted Ti6Al4V open porous structures for bone tissue engineering. A two-level three-factor full factorial design was employed to assess the individual and interactive effects of the surface treatment duration and the concentration of the chemical etching solution on the final surface roughness and beam thickness of the treated porous structures. It was observed that the concentration of the surface treatment solution was the most important factor influencing roughness reduction. The designed beam thickness decreased the effectiveness of the surface treatment. In this case study, the optimized processing conditions for AM production and the post-AM surface treatment were defined based on the DoE output and were validated experimentally. This allowed the production of customized 3D porous structures with controlled surface roughness and overall morphological properties, which can assist in more controlled evaluation of the effect of surface roughness on various functional properties.  相似文献

Ti6Al4V titanium alloys are widely used in a variety of scientific and industrial fields. Laser beam welding is one of the most effective techniques for the joining of titanium plates. The main objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the most important laser parameters on welding performance of titanium alloy in two different physical environments such as air and water (i.e., serum) media. Specifically, the laser beam welding of 2 mm thick Ti6Al4V samples was applied using an Nd:YAG laser in open-air welding using argon as a shielding gas, and in wet welding using a serum environment. The deepest penetration was achieved at −3 mm focal position with 11 J of laser energy in both investigated media (i.e., air and serum). The maximum hardness (1130 HV) was achieved for the focal position of −4 mm in serum medium while it was 795 HV for a focal position of −5 mm in air medium. The minimum (1200 μm and 800 μm) and maximum (1960 μm and 1900 μm) weld widths were observed for air and serum medium, respectively. After the welding process, martensite, massif martensite, and transformed martensite were observed in the microstructure of Ti6Al4V. To the best of our knowledge, the underwater wet welding of titanium alloy was carried out and reported for the first time in this study.  相似文献

In the field of implant dentistry there are several mechanisms by which metal particles can be released into the peri-implant tissues, such as implant insertion, corrosion, wear, or surface decontamination techniques. The aim of this study was to evaluate the corrosion behavior of Ti6Al4V particles released during implantoplasty of dental implants treated due to periimplantitis. A standardized protocol was used to obtain metal particles produced during polishing the surface of Ti6Al4V dental implants. Physicochemical and biological characterization of the particles were described in Part I, while the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior have been studied in this study. Mechanical properties were determined by means of nanoindentation and X-ray diffraction. Corrosion resistance was evaluated by electrochemical testing in an artificial saliva medium. Corrosion parameters such as critical current density (icr), corrosion potential (ECORR), and passive current density (iCORR) have been determined. The samples for electrochemical behavior were discs of Ti6Al4V as-received and discs with the same mechanical properties and internal stresses than the particles from implantoplasty. The discs were cold-worked at 12.5% in order to achieve the same properties (hardness, strength, plastic strain, and residual stresses). The implantoplasty particles showed a higher hardness, strength, elastic modulus, and lower strain to fracture and a compressive residual stress. Resistance to corrosion of the implantoplasty particles decreased, and surface pitting was observed. This fact is due to the increase of the residual stress on the surfaces which favor the electrochemical reactions. The values of corrosion potential can be achieved in normal conditions and produce corroded debris which could be cytotoxic and cause tattooing in the soft tissues.  相似文献

The paper investigates the fabrication of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) titanium alloy Ti6Al4V micro-lattice structures for the production of lightweight components. Specifically, the pillar textile unit cell is used as base lattice structure and alternative lattice topologies including reinforcing vertical bars are also considered. Detailed characterizations of dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, and micro-hardness are performed. In addition, compression tests are carried out in order to evaluate the mechanical strength and the energy absorbed per unit mass of the lattice truss specimens made by SLM. The built structures have a relative density ranging between 0.2234 and 0.5822. An optimization procedure is implemented via the method of Taguchi to identify the optimal geometric configuration which maximizes peak strength and energy absorbed per unit mass.  相似文献

The Ti6Al4V alloy has been widely used in aerospace equipment and medical devices. However, the poor wear resistance of the Ti6Al4V alloy hinders its further engineering application. In this study, the ultrasonic strengthening grinding process (USGP) and laser texturing process were employed to enhance the wear resistance of Ti6Al4V alloy. The frictional behavior of all samples was determined via a ball-on-disc friction and wear tester under dry conditions. The worn surface morphology, cross-sectional hardness, surface roughness, and microstructure were analyzed. The results demonstrated that the USGP induced high hardness, high dislocation density, and grain refinement, as well as improvements in the wear resistance of Ti6Al4V. Moreover, laser texture could enhance the capacity to capture wear debris and reduce wear probability. When combining the USGP and laser texturing process for the surface treatment of Ti6Al4V alloy, the lowest and most stable friction coefficients were obtained, as well as the best wear resistance. Compared to the polished sample, the steady stage friction coefficient of the sample treated by USGP and laser texturing process was remarkably decreased by 58%. This work demonstrates that combining the USGP and laser texturing process could be a promising solution for improving the wear resistance properties of Ti6Al4V alloy, which makes it more suitable for various engineering applications.  相似文献

The boronized Ti6Al4V/HA composite is deemed to be an important biomaterial because of its potential remarkable mechanical and biological properties. This paper reports the osteogenesis performance of the boronized Ti6Al4V/HA composite, which was prepared by microwave sintering of powders of Ti6Al4V, hydroxyapatite (HA), and TiB2 in high-purity Ar gas at 1050 °C for 30 min, as dental implant based on both cell experiments in vitro and animal experiments in vivo. The comparison between the boronized Ti6Al4V/HA composite and Ti, Ti6Al4V, and boronized Ti6Al4V in the terms of adhesion, proliferation, alkaline phosphate (ALP) activity, and mineralization of MG-63 cells on their surfaces confirmed that the composite exhibited the best inductive osteogenesis potential. It exerted a more significant effect on promoting the early osteogenic differentiation of osteoblasts and exhibited the maximum optical density (OD) value in the MTT assay and the highest levels of ALP activity and mineralization ability, primarily ascribed to its bioactive HA component, porous structure, and relatively rough micro-morphology. The in vivo study in rabbits based on the micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis, histological and histomorphometric evaluation, and biomechanical testing further confirmed that the boronized Ti6Al4V/HA composite had the highest new bone formation potential and the best osseointegration property after implantation for up to 12 weeks, mainly revealed by the measured values of bone volume fraction, bone implant contact, and maximum push-out force which, for example, reached 48.64%, 61%, and 150.3 ± 6.07 N at the 12th week. Owing to these inspiring features, it can serve as a highly promising dental implant.  相似文献

Building orientation is important in selective laser melting (SLM) processes. Current studies only focus on the horizontal and vertical building orientations without considering different modes of horizontal orientations. In fact, for horizontal orientation, different surfaces of the sample that contact the substrate will affect the heat transfer mode and efficiency, and in turn affect the microstructure and material properties. In this paper, the effect of two modes of horizontal building orientations on microstructure, mechanical and surface properties of SLM Ti6Al4V was studied. Current research about building orientation is deficient because the geometry of samples or test surfaces are not strictly defined, which seriously influences the results due to their different heat transfer efficiency and mode. Therefore, the geometry of the samples and test surfaces were clearly defined, and its necessity was proved in this study. To achieve the research goal, three test samples were prepared: sample SLM-PB-S with the building orientation parallel to the substrate and the shorter side L1 contacts it, sample SLM-PB-L with the building orientation parallel to the substrate and the longer side L2 contacts it and sample SLM-VB with the building orientation vertical to the substrate. Subsequently, the microstructure, grain information, densification, residual stress, micro-hardness, tensile properties and surface topography of different samples were analyzed and compared. In the results, SLM-PB-S exhibited denser microstructure and better mechanical properties than SLM-PB-L, including smaller grain size, stronger texture, higher density, micro-hardness, tensile strength, plasticity and better surface quality. It originates from a higher cooling rate and shorter scanning time between layers during SLM-PB-S fabrication, leading to finer grains, lower porosity and better interlayer metallurgical bonding, thus resulting in better material properties. This study can provide a reference to select the proper building orientation in SLM.  相似文献

Heat-assisted single point incremental forming or HA-SPIF has a great potential for producing one-piece batches of hard-to-form materials such as Ti6Al4V alloy for medical and aeronautical applications. One of the limitations of the process is the difficulty in achieving a reasonable surface finish, which makes essential the characterization of the tribological process in the tool–sheet contact. In fact, not much work can be found at this point in literature. In this research, a novel procedure for evaluating the adhesion on the tool surface is proposed and the influence of the temperature is determined. The surface finish of parts is analyzed, and the changes promoted by HA-SPIF appearing in the morphology of the external surface layer are characterized by SEM.  相似文献

Ti6Al4V alloy has been widely used in many fields, such as aerospace and medicine, due to its excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Most high-performance components made of Ti6Al4V alloy usually need to be polished to produce their specific functional requirements. However, due to the material properties of Ti6Al4V, its polishing process still requires significant development. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the performance of polishing Ti6Al4V by using tools with different rigidities. Two kinds of bonnet tool were used, namely a pure rubber (PR) bonnet and a semirigid (SR) bonnet. The characterization of material removal and surface integrity after polishing was conducted through a series of experiments on a 6-DOF robotic polishing device. The results demonstrate that both bonnet tools successfully produce nanometric level surface roughness. Moreover, the material removal rate of the SR bonnet tool is significantly higher than that of the PR bonnet, which is consistent with the material removal characteristics of glass polishing in previous research. In addition, the presented analysis on key polishing parameters and surface integrity lays the theoretical foundation for the polishing process of titanium alloy in different application fields.  相似文献

This paper reports a fundamental investigation consisting of systematic trials into the response of Ti6Al4V alloy to high-speed machining using carbide inserts. It is a useful extension to work previously published, and aims at assessing the impact of the process parameters, depth of cut, cutting speed and feed rate in addition to cutting length, and their interrelations, on observed crater and flank wear and roughness of the machined surface. The results showed that abrasion was the most important flank wear mechanism at high speed. It also showed that increased cutting length accelerated crater wear more than exhibited flank wear and had considerable effect on surface roughness. In particular, crater wear increased by over 150% (on average), and flank wear increased by 40% (on average) when increasing cutting length from 40 to 120 mm. However, cutting the same length increased surface roughness by 50%, which helps explain how progression of tool wear leads to deteriorated surface quality. ANOVA was used to perform statistical analyses of the measured data and revealed that cutting length and depth of cut had the greatest effect on both crater and flank wear of the cutting tool. These results confirm that high-speed machining of Ti6Al4V alloy is a reliable process, with cutting speed identified as having a relatively small influence on the tool wear and resultant roughness of the machined surface relative to other parameters.  相似文献

Metallic elemental powder mixture and pre-alloyed metallic powder are both frequently used powder feedstock in the additive manufacturing process. However, little research has been conducted to compare the corrosion behavior of selective laser melting (SLM) alloys, fabricated by pre-alloyed metallic powder and mixed metallic powder. Hence, it is important to investigate the corrosion behavior of SLMed alloys, as well as the corresponding cast ingot, with the aim to better understand the feasibility of designing new materials. In this work, the SLM-produced Ti6Al4V3Cu alloys were manufactured using a metallic elemental powder mixture and pre-alloyed metallic powder, respectively. The corrosion behavior of the different Ti6Al4V3Cu alloys was investigated in following electrochemical tests and ion release measurements. The results showed that the Ti6Al4V3Cu alloy prepared by pre-alloyed metallic powder showed better corrosion resistance than that produced from mixed metallic powder. Moreover, the SLM-produced Ti6Al4V3Cu alloys performed significantly better in corrosion resistance than the cast Ti6Al4V3Cu. The results are expected to achieve a better understanding of the feasibility of designing new materials using mixed powders, contributing to reducing development costs and cycles.  相似文献

Titanium alloys have been extensively used in practical machining owing to their outstanding mechanical properties, high specific strength and low thermal deformation. In this study, the cutting experiments are carried out on Ti6Al4V material with right-hand and straight cemented-carbide groove reamers. The experimental results show that the cutting force with the right-hand reamer is smaller compared to straight groove reamer due to the groove structure. The main tool wear forms are micro-chipping, adhesive wear, abrasive wear, and coating falling off on the right-hand reamer, while there is a built-up edge and serious damage failure on the cutting edge of the straight groove reamer. Notch wear and pitting on the surface of the hole wall are mainly caused by chip adhesion and tool wear. The surface-roughness value is the lowest as the cutting speed is 60 m/min and the feed rate is 0.4 mm/rev. The holes machined by the right-hand reamer have a low hole diameter deviation with various cutting parameters. The geometric accuracy of cylindricity is higher as the feed rate is 0.4 mm/rev and the cutting speed is 40 m/min for both kinds of reamers, and the cylindricity is better with the right-hand reamer.  相似文献

At solid-liquid interfaces, charged particles within the electric double layer (EDL) are acted on by the electrostatic force, which may affect cell absorption and surface wettability. In this study, a model of the electrostatic force and surface tension of textured surfaces was presented. Then, the growth and adhesion of Murine osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1) cells on laser-ablated micro-square-textured Ti-6Al-4V surfaces were studied to demonstrate the use of a laser-processed texture to effectively improve bioactivity. Three different micro-square-textured hydrophilic surfaces, presenting lower contact angles of 19°, 22.5°, and 31.75° compared with that of a smooth surface (56.5°), were fabricated using a fiber-optic laser. Cellular morphology and initial cell attachment were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence microscopy, respectively. The results show that the electrostatic force not only made the textured surface more hydrophilic but also made the cells tend to adhere to the edges and corners of the protruding convexes. Cell morphology analysis also showed that cells would prefer to grow at the edges and corners of each micro-square convex protrusion. The laser-treated surfaces were more conducive to rapid cell growth and adhesion, and cells were preferentially attached on the hydrophilic-textured surfaces. Electrostatic force may be an important factor in effectively improving the bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V surfaces, and the presence of more surface grooves would be more conducive to improving the bioactivity of cells.  相似文献

Corrosion of medical implants is a possible failure mode via induced local inflammatory effects, systemic deposition and corrosion related mechanical failure. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarisation (CPP) testing was utilized to evaluate the effect of increased porosity (60% and 80%) and decreased wall thickness in gyroid lattice structures on the electrochemical behaviour of LPBF Ti6Al4V structures. The use of CPP allowed for the landmarks of breakdown potential, resting potential and vertex potential to be analysed, as well as facilitating the construction of Tafel plots and qualitative Goldberg analysis. The results indicated that 60% gyroid samples were most susceptible to the onset of pitting corrosion when compared to 80% gyroid and solid samples. This was shown through decreased breakdown and vertex potentials and were found to correlate to increased lattice surface area to void volume ratio. Tafel plots indicated that despite the earlier onset of pitting corrosion, both gyroid test groups displayed lower rates of corrosion per year, indicating a lower severity of corrosion. This study highlighted inherent tradeoffs between lattice optimisation and corrosion behaviour with a potential parabolic link between void volume, surface area and corrosion being identified. This potential link is supported by 60% gyroid samples having the lowest breakdown potentials, but investigation into other porosity ranges is suggested to support the hypothesis. All 3D printed materials studied here showed breakdown potentials higher than ASTM F2129′s suggestion of 800 mV for evaluation within the physiological environment, indicating that under static conditions pitting and crevice corrosion should not initiate within the body.  相似文献

Ti6Al4V substrates were electrochemically deposited with nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite (HA) from aqueous electrolytes. Cathodic HA coatings were obtained when the electrolyte was stirred using ultrasonic vibration. Two current densities of 20 mA/cm2 and 50 mA/cm2 were employed. Polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were the techniques used to estimate the corrosion of coatings in simulated body fluid (SBF). The results indicate good corrosion resistance for the coating obtained at 50 mA/cm2 from ultrasonic stirring of the electrolyte.  相似文献

Ti6Al4V (Ti64) alloys manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) are well known for their susceptibility to failure at a low ductility of less than 10% due to the formation of an (α′) martensitic structure. Annealing and solution treatments as post-heat treatments of α′ are considered a good way to improve the mechanical performance of SLM-manufactured Ti64 parts. In this research, the effect of heat treatment parameters such as temperature (850 °C and 1020 °C) and cooling rate (furnace and water cooling) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the SLM Ti64 structure was investigated. It was shown that the tensile strength/ductility of the Ti64 alloy produced by SLM was determined by the post-heat treatment. The experimental results revealed that heat treatment at 850 °C followed by furnace cooling resulted in the best possible combination of ductility (13%) and tensile strength (σy = 932, σu = 986 MPa) with a microstructure consisting mainly of 78.71% α and 21.29% β. Heat treatment at 850 °C followed by water cooling was characterized by a reduction in hardness and the formation of predominantly α plus α′′ and a small amount of β. HT850WC exhibited yield and tensile strengths of about 870 and 930 MPa, respectively, and an elongation at fracture of 10.4%. Heat treatment at 1020 °C and subsequent cooling in the furnace was characterized by the formation of an α + β lamellar microstructure. In contrast, heat treatment at 1020 °C and subsequent water cooling formed semi-equiaxial β grains of about 170 µm in diameter with longer elongated α grains and basket-weave α′. Post-treatment at 1020 °C followed by furnace cooling showed high ductility with an elongation of 14.5% but low tensile strength (σy = 748, σu = 833 MPa). In contrast, post-treatment at 1020 °C followed by water cooling showed poor ductility with elongation of 8.6% but high tensile strength (σy = 878, σu = 990 MPa). The effect of aging at 550 °C for 3 h and cooling in a furnace on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the specimens cooled with water was also studied. It was found that aging influenced the microstructure of the Ti6Al4V parts, including β, α, and α″ precipitation and fragmentation or globularization of elongated α grains. The aging process at 550 °C leads to an increase in tensile strength and a decrease in ductility.  相似文献

A Nd-YAG laser was used for texturing the Ti6Al4V surface with dimples of diameter 50 and 100 µm and centre-to-centre distance 100, 200 and 400 µm, defining the surface texture density. The tribological evaluation was conducted to analyse and compare the behaviour of un-textured and laser-textured samples under water in comparison to oil (PAO6) lubrication without and with the addition of MoS2 nanotubes into the lubricant. MoS2 nanotubes had a positive effect on friction in both media for laser-textured Ti6Al4V. Evaluation of friction and wear in water and PAO6 showed a comparable tribological response in water to oil for specific laser-textured configurations, proving the novel concept of green tribology for laser texturing in combination with MoS2 nanotubes/water lubrication.  相似文献

The influence of cutting forces during the machining of titanium alloys has attained prime attention in selecting the optimal cutting conditions to improve the surface integrity of medical implants and biomedical devices. So far, it has not been easy to explain the chip morphology of Ti6Al4V and the thermo-mechanical interactions involved during the cutting process. This paper investigates the chip configuration of the Ti6Al4V alloy under dry milling conditions at a macro and micro scale by employing the Johnson-Cook material damage model. 2D modeling, numerical milling simulations, and post-processing were conducted using the Abaqus/Explicit commercial software. The uncut chip geometry was modeled with variable thicknesses to accomplish the macro to micro-scale cutting by adapting a trochoidal path. Numerical results, predicted for the cutting reaction forces and shearing zone temperatures, were found in close approximation to experimental ones with minor deviations. Further analyses evaluated the influence of cutting speeds and contact friction coefficients over the chip flow stress, equivalent plastic strain, and chip morphology. The methodology developed can be implemented in resolving the industrial problems in the biomedical sector for predicting the chip morphology of the Ti6Al4V alloy, fracture mechanisms of hard-to-cut materials, and the effects of different cutting parameters on workpiece integrity.  相似文献

In order to track the free interface of the melt pool and understand the evolution of the melt pool, the flow of fluid, and the interface behavior of gas and liquid, a physical model is developed by using the VOF method in this paper. Its characteristics are a combined heat source model, including a parabolic rotation and a cylindrical distribution, and a powder bed stochastic distributed model with powder particle size. The unit interface between the metallic and gas phase in the laser–powder interaction zone can only be loaded by the heat source. Only the first and second laser scanning tracks are simulated to reduce the calculation time. The simulation results show that process parameters such as laser power and scanning speed have significant effects on the fluid flow and surface morphology in the melt pool, which are in good agreement with the experimental results. Compared with the first track, the second track has larger melt pool geometry, higher melt temperature, and faster fluid flow. The melt flows intensely at the initial position due to the high flow rate in the limited melt space. Because there is enough space for the metal flow, the second track can obtain smooth surface morphology more easily compared to the first track. The melt pool temperature at the laser beam center fluctuates during the laser scanning process. This depends on the effects of the interaction between heat conduction or heat accumulation or the interaction between heat accumulation and violent fluid flow. The temperature distribution and fluid flow in the melt pool benefit the analysis and understanding of the evolution mechanism of the melt pool geometry and surface topography and further allow regulation of the L-PBF process of Ti6Al4V.  相似文献
