Objectives Current risk assessment of elemental mercury vapor is based on the tremor toxicity. To clarify the neuromotor effects of occupational exposure to mercury vapor, hand tremor and postural sway were measured in 27 miners and smelters (i.e., exposed workers) and 52 unexposed subjects. Methods Urine samples were collected and total mercury and creatinine concentrations were determined. Data of the tremor and postural sway were analyzed using the fast Fourier transformation. Results The geometric means of the urinary mercury level (UHg) were 228 (range 22.6–4,577) μg/g creatinine for the exposed workers and 2.6 (1.0–17.4) μg/g creatinine for the unexposed subjects. Total tremor intensity and frequency-specific tremor intensities at 1–6 and 10–14 Hz were significantly larger in the exposed workers than in the unexposed subjects (P < 0.05), but they were not significantly related to the UHg among the exposed workers (P > 0.05). In contrast, there were no significant differences in any postural sway parameters between the above two groups (P > 0.05), but the transversal sway with eyes open was positively related to the UHg among the exposed workers in using multiple regression analysis (P < 0.05). Conclusions These findings suggest that postural sway, as well as hand tremor, may be affected by elemental mercury vapor exposure, but the former test seems to be less sensitive to mercury than the latter one.  相似文献

Summary Elemental mercury (Hg°) in urine samples from workers in thermometer manufacturing factories was determined. In a factory in which the mercury level in the ambient air averaged more than 0.1 mg Hg m–3, the Hg° concentration in the workers' urine ranged between 0.05 and 1.7 g Hg 1–1 and constituted less than 1% of the inorganic mercury (In-Hg) in urine. Higher amounts of Hg° could be detected in urine on the day of the filling operation when thermometer blanks were filled with metallic mercury and on the following day when compared with other days. During this operation, the workers were exposed to mercury vapor levels with as much as 0.47–0.67 mg Hg m–3. Our findings suggest that Hg° appears in urine quite rapidly after the worker's exposure to unusually high mercury levels.  相似文献

Exposure to mercury, a risk factor for neurodevelopmental toxicity, was assessed in Spanish children (preschool children and newborns, n = 218) in a four-locations survey by performing mercury determination in hair. To assess the prenatal and children’s exposure and its potential risk, total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were analyzed and examined for associations with maternal sociodemographic characteristics and dietary intake through interviews and food frequency questionnaires. The mean THg in hair was 0.94 μg/g, ranging from 0.19 to 5.63 μg/g in preschool children and 1.68 μg/g (0.13–8.43 μg/g) in newborns. Associations between mercury levels in hair and fish consumption frequency were found regardless of the group evaluated. Neither other food item nor maternal covariates were associated with mercury levels in the newborn group. In children, the mean THg values among frequent fish consumers (more than four times per week) were almost threefold higher compared with non-consumers (1.40 vs. 0.49 μg/g). Newborns from mothers who had intake of fish two or more times per week exhibited nearly threefold higher hair levels than those who rarely or never consumed fish (2.26 vs. 0.78 μg/g). Finally, mercury levels in hair exceeded the EPA reference dose (RfD) of 0.1 μg Hg/kg body weight per day (equivalent to 1 μg Hg/g hair) in 42% of the population studied. Overall, we conclude that levels of mercury in Spain are among the highest in the non-exposed populations probably because of the relatively high fish consumption. J. Astray and B. The objective of this study was to investigate the occupational and nonoccupational exposure to mercury (Hg) vapor in dental personnel by examining the relationships between blood mercury, urine mercury, and their ratio with air mercury. The method was performed on 50 occupational exposed and 50 unexposed controls (25 men and 25 women). The mercury concentrations in air and human biological samples were determined based on the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) method and standard method (SM) by a new mode of liquid-phase microextraction, respectively. The mean mercury concentrations in urine (μg Hg0/g creatinine) and blood were significantly higher than control group, respectively (19.41 ± 5.18 vs 2.15 ± 0.07 μg/g and 16.40 ± 4.97 vs 2.50 ± 0.02 μg/L) (p <.001). The relationships between mercury concentration in blood/urine ratio (r = .380) with dental office air are new indicators for assessing occupational exposure in dental personnel.  相似文献

Mercury exposures to smelting workers of artisanal mercury mines in Wuchuan, Guizhou, China were evaluated by urine and hair mercury survey. The mean urinary mercury (U-Hg), hair total mercury (T-Hg), and hair methyl mercury (Me-Hg) for smelting workers was 1060 microg/g creatinine (microg/g Cr), 69.3 and 2.32 microg/g, respectively. The results were significantly higher than that of control group, which is 1.30 microg/g Cr, 0.78 and 0.65 microg/g, correspondingly. The average urinary beta2-microglobulin (beta2-MG) was 248 microg/g Cr for the exposed group contrasting to 73.5 microg/g Cr for the control group and the data showed a serious adverse effect on renal system for the smelting workers. The workers were exposed to mercury vapor through inhalation, and the exposure route of Me-Hg may be through intake of polluted diet. The results indicate that age, alcohol drinking, and smoking are not crucial factors controlling the urine and hair mercury levels for the exposed and the control group. Clinical symptoms including finger and eyelid tremor, gingivitis, and typical dark-line on gums were observed in six workers. This study indicated that the smelting workers in Wuchuan were seriously exposed to mercury vapor.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The kidneys are one of the main target organs for elemental mercury (Hg(0)). The influence of Hg(0) on kidneys has been extensively studied but the long-term effects on this organ have not yet been determined with certainty. The basic aim of this research was to study the effects of a long-term exposure to Hg(0) vapours on the renal function in miners in the post-exposure period. METHODS: The population studied comprised 53 miners (33 active and 20 retired) from the Idrija Mercury Mine as the exposed miners group and 53 unexposed workers as the control group. On the basis of mine exposure records (air and biological monitoring), the environmental and biological indicators of the past exposure to Hg(0) were calculated for each miner. Kidney function was determined in both groups, i.e. in the exposed miners as well as in the controls. Glomerular kidney function was evaluated by a quantitative analysis of albumin and IgG in urine. Tubular kidney function, however, was determined by a quantitative analysis of alpha(1)-microglobulin in urine and by the enzymatic activity of N-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase (NAG). RESULTS: The mean exposure time in miners was 15 years. The total number of cycles of exposure ranged from 13 to 119. The mean annual time-weighted exposure was 0.29 mg m(-3) and the mean integrated exposure intensity (IEI) was 1413 mg m(-3)-h. Throughout the period of exposure the average urine mercury concentration in miners was 68.24 microg l(-1) and the average sum of peak urine mercury concentrations was 3901 microg l(-1). Albumin, IgG and alpha(1)-microglobulin in urine were significantly elevated in the exposed miners compared with the unexposed controls (t = 2.17, P = 0.03; t = 2.81, P < 0.01; and t = 2.07, P = 0.04). No significant differences were found in the urine NAG activity when the exposed miners and the unexposed workers were compared. Background

Many populations are exposed to multiple species of mercury (Hg), predominantly organic Hg as methylmercury (MeHg) from fish, and inorganic Hg as Hg vapor from dental amalgams. Most of our knowledge of the neurotoxicity of Hg is based on research devoted to studying only one form at a time, mostly MeHg.

Objectives

In this study we investigated the effects of prenatal exposure to MeHg and Hg vapor on Hg concentrations in the brain of neonatal rats.

Methods

Female Long-Evans hooded rats were exposed to MeHg (0, 3, 6, or 9 ppm as drinking solution), Hg vapor (0, 300, or 1,000 μg/m3 for 2 hr/day), or the combination of both, from 30 days before breeding through gestational day 18. On postnatal day 4, whole brains were taken from one male and one female from each of four litters in each treatment group to assess organic and inorganic Hg in the brain by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry.

Results

Statistical analysis using linear mixed effects models showed that MeHg dose was the primary determinant of both organic and inorganic brain Hg levels. For both outcomes, we also found significant interactions between MeHg and Hg vapor exposure. These interactions were driven by the fact that among animals not exposed to MeHg, animals exposed to Hg vapor had significantly greater organic and inorganic brain Hg levels than did unexposed animals.

Conclusion

This interaction, heretofore not reported, suggests that coexposure to MeHg and Hg vapor at levels relevant to human exposure might elevate neurotoxic risks.  相似文献

In order to assess the mercury exposure of pregnant and lactating women in Slovenia, levels of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were determined in hair, cord blood and breast milk. In addition, the frequency of fish consumption was estimated, because fish is generally the main pathway for human exposure to MeHg. Hair samples were collected from 574 women participating in this study, while cord blood and breast milk samples were collected from 446 and 284 women, respectively. As expected, the levels of THg in hair (median (Med)=297 ng/g, 10th percentile (P10)=73 ng/g, 90th percentile (P90)=781 ng/g), cord blood (Med=1.5 ng/g, P10=0.5 ng/g, P90=4.2 ng/g) and breast milk (Med=0.2 ng/g, P10=0.06 ng/g, P90=0.6 ng/g) were low, due to low consumption of fish (X=25 g/day). A significant linear correlation was found between levels of ln THg in hair and ln THg in cord blood (r=0.87, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.84–0.89), between levels of ln THg in hair and ln MeHg in cord blood (r=0.94, 95% CI: 0.90–0.96) and between ln THg levels in cord blood and ln THg levels in breast milk (r=0.36, 95% CI: 0.25–0.47). Spearman's rank correlations between the frequency of fish consumption and THg in hair (rs=0.35, 95% CI: 0.28–0.42), and between the frequency of fish consumption and THg in cord blood (rs=0.43, 95% CI: 0.36–0.51) or MeHg in cord blood (rs=0.31, 95% CI: 0.06–0.52) were weak. This could be due to the approximate information on fish consumption obtained from the questionnaires, the high variability of MeHg concentrations in fish and a relatively high proportion of inorganic mercury in the biomarkers which originates from sources other than fish. In conclusion, THg levels in cord blood, THg levels in hair and MeHg levels in cord blood are suitable biomarkers of low-level Hg exposure through fish consumption. Compared to cord blood, hair samples are easy to collect, store and analyse.  相似文献

[目的]研究典型汞污染源暴露人群的发汞含量,为保护相关人群健康提供依据。[方法]收集浙江某电子废弃物回收区人群发样64份,辽宁某煤矿区人群发样145份、尿样145份,上海某医院医护人员发样62份。采用冷原子吸收法测定发总汞和尿汞含量,采用盐酸-甲苯萃取,气相色谱测定甲基汞含量。[结果]电子废弃物回收区人群中酸洗工人头发总汞含量为1.64μg/g,工业区管理人员为0.84μg/g;当地市民头发甲基汞含量为1.25μg/g,酸洗工人仅为0.23μg/g。辽宁铁岭煤矿区人群发汞含量为煤矿工人0.87μg/g、矿区管理人员0.65μg/g、当地居民0.60μg/g,上述3种人群的尿汞含量分别为12.13、2.74、2.14μg/L;上海某医院不同科室的医务人员发汞含量均低于美国环境保护署规定的发汞安全限值1.0μg/g。[结论]台州电子废弃物回收区和铁岭煤矿区工人存在一定的汞污染暴露风险。  相似文献

Wild fish from Qiandao Hu, a reservoir in the Zhejiang Province in eastern China, have increased mercury (Hg) concentrations exceeding the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended guidelines. Due to the importance of freshwater biota in the local cuisine, dietary exposure to increased neurotoxic Hg is a concern in this region. An environmental hair-marker study was undertaken coincident with a cross-sectional epidemiologic study with 50 women age 17–46 years living in a Qiandao Hu fishing village. Diet, occupation, and other possible sources of Hg were recorded by way of questionnaires. Total mercury (THg) and selenium (Se) concentrations were measured in human hair samples and in important market fish species. Fish THg and Se concentrations were increased, with some fish concentrations >200 ng/g THg and 500 ng/g Se (wet weight [ww]). However, the average hair THg was low at 0.76 ± 0.51 μg/g dry weight, lower than the WHO’s no observable–adverse effect level (50 μg/g), whereas the average hair Se was 1.0 μg/g. Hair THg concentration was positively associated with the average mass of fish consumed weekly, indicating that fish consumption is the main contributor to hair THg in this geographic area. The age-related hair THg trend was not linear but instead demonstrated a rapid increase in THg before age 25 years, followed by consistent concentrations in all ages after age 25 years. There was a positive correlation (p < 0.001) between molar Se and Hg in the hair samples, suggesting a possible antagonistic relation. This is the first study examining the relation between dietary Hg exposure and hair THg in an eastern China community where freshwater fish, as opposed to marine fish, dominates the cuisine.  相似文献

Summary Fourteen Japanese females exposed to elemantal mercury vapour of concentration; 0.001–0.019 mg Hg/m3, were examined for inorganic and organic mercury concentrations in red blood cells, plasma, urine, and hair. Examinations were conducted the times; at 0,4 and 8 months of mercury exposure. No significant change of inorganic and organic mercury in urine was observed for three examinations. Both inorganic and organic mercury in plasma, and only organic mercury in red blood cells, increased significantly after commencement of mercury work. The hair organic mercury values stayed constant. The intake of organic mercury was judged as constant from the constancy of hair mercury values, and the change of organic mercury concentrations in plasma and red blood cells must have been elicited from the intake of elemental mercury. Summary Renal function and psychomotor performance (eye-hand coordination, arm-hand steadiness) of a group of 43 workers exposed to mercury vapor were examined. Their mean age and average duration of exposure to mercury were 38 and 5 years, respectively. The results were compared with those obtained in a matched group of 47 control workers. Increased proteinuria and albuminuria were found slightly more prevalent in the Hg-exposed group than in the control workers. These results are in agreement with those found during a previous study carried out in another group of workers also exposed to elemental mercury (Bucket et al. 1980). The scores of the psychomotor tests were less satisfactory in the Hg workers than in the control workers, the arm-hand steadiness test being more discriminative than the eye-hand coordination test. Preclinical changes in psychomotor function can be detected independently of the presence of signs of renal dysfunction. No clear-cut relationships were found between the prevalence of abnormal psychomotor scores and the level of mercury in blood (HgB) or in urine (HgU). Increased prevalences of abnormal psychomotor scores seem however to occur for HgB between 1 and 2 g/100 ml and for HgU between 50 and 100 g/g creatinine. Therefore, a biologic threshold limit value of 50 g/g creatinine is proposed for urinary mercury to prevent the development of preclinical effects on the central nervous system. Inorganic mercury may cause immunologically mediated disease: e.g., glomerulonephritis, acrodynia, and contact allergy. Animal models have demonstrated the importance of genetic factors in determining susceptibility and resistance to autoimmunity, as well as the specific manifestation of the autoimmune response. Findings in groups of workers with occupational exposure to inorganic mercury have been inconsistent. Objective: To investigate whether an immune response, caused by exposure to inorganic mercury (Hg), could be shown in occupationally exposed workers. Methods: Immunoglobulin G (IgG), antinuclear autoantibodies, antibodies against thyroid, stomach or kidney antigens using indirect immunofluorescence, antibodies against glomerular basement membrane using ELISA, and circulating immune complexes in serum, and albumin in urine, were examined in Hg-exposed workers and controls. The two groups, 41 male chloralkali workers exposed to Hg vapour (mean exposure time 9 years) and 41 unexposed controls were age-matched and recruited from the same company. Hg concentrations in whole blood (B-Hg), plasma (P-Hg), and urine (U-Hg) were determined using cold vapor atomic spectrometry. Design: Cross-sectional study. Results: The mean B-Hg, P-Hg and U-Hg levels were 46 nmol/l, 37 nmol/l, and 27 μg/g creatinine in the exposed group, and 17 nmol/l, 6.9 nmol/l, and 3.4 μg/g creatinine in the referents. No statistically significant differences were found regarding IgG levels, urinary albumin excretion, prevalence of abnormal titers of autoantibodies or circulating immune complexes. There were no statistically significant associations between autoantibodies or immune complexes on the one hand and mercury exposure indices on the other. Conclusion: The results indicate that, if and when lasting autoimmune response occurs at the mercury exposure levels of the present study, it is uncommon. A small fraction of humans may, however, be susceptible to the development of autoimmunity, and there is also a possible “healthy worker” selection. Great egret (Ardea albus) eggs and nestling feathers were collected for total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) analysis from two colonies in the Florida Everglades in 1999 and 2000. THg was present in all eggs at a mean concentration of 0.39 ± 0.19 μg/g fresh weight (n = 33, range = 0.08–0.86 μg/g). Egg-THg levels did not differ significantly between colonies or years. MeHg concentration in eggs was 0.35 ± 0.18 μg/g fresh weight (n = 20, range = 0.05–0.82 μg/g,), and on average represented 85% of the THg found in the egg. Concentration of THg in feathers from egret nestlings, age 11–31 days, ranged from 1.4 to 8.6 μg/g dry weight. Feather-THg levels also did not differ significantly between colonies or years. THg concentrations in feathers, normalized based on bill length, were positively correlated to THg concentrations in eggs from the same clutch. Levels of THg in both eggs and feathers were lower in 1999 and 2000 than values reported for similar samples collected in 1993–95, indicating that MeHg exposure has decreased in the southern Everglades since the mid-1990s. THg levels in eggs and nestling feathers for the period of this study were below levels associated with toxic reproductive effects. Clutch size, fledging success, and brood size observed in this study were consistent for this species in the Everglades. Collectively, these results suggest that MeHg was not adversely affecting the reproductive performance of this population during the study. In this paper an integrated approach in assessment of the population exposure from various sources of total mercury (THg) oral intake in the Czech Republic is presented. The information on total mercury levels in diet, drinking water, surface urban soil and body fluids and tissues stem from the Czech national Environmental Health Monitoring System (EHMS) operated since 1994. The THg concentration was determined by the special atomic absorption spectrophotometer AMA 254. The data on THg content in food from the sales network were collected in 12 cities. The estimated average dietary intake representing more than 95% of weight of usual diet composition ranged 1–2% of the JECFA/FAO WHO provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) value for total mercury (5 μg/kg b.w./week). Data on drinking water quality stem from the nationwide monitoring database. The content of THg in drinking water is generally low; only 0.2% of the Czech population supplied with drinking water from the distribution networks (total of 92% of the population) has a mercury intake from drinking water higher than 1% PTWI and not exceeding 5% PTWI. The estimation of potential mercury intake by unintentional consumption of soil in small children was based on THg content in surface soil of a total of 324 nursery schools in 24 cities and towns. Median value was 0.16 mg/kg. Human biomonitoring was performed in 9 Czech cities. In 2007, the mercury median values in blood of adults (N = 412) were 0.85 and 0.89 μg/l in males and in females, respectively; urine median value in adults was 1.10 μg/g creatinine. In 2008, the blood median value in children (N = 324) amounted to 0.35 μg/l; urine median value is 0.16 μg/g creatinine. In children's hair the median THg value was 0.18 μg/g. The correlation between fish consumption and blood THg levels was observed in both adults and children. Also the biomonitoring outputs did not reveal a substantial burden of the population.  相似文献

This field study investigated mercury (Hg) levels in urine and hair of Andean children of indigenous Saraguro and Metizo gold miners in the Nambija, Ecuador gold mining settlement. Spot samples of urine and hair samples were collected concurrently from 80 children each. Urine samples were used to determine the inorganic Hg burden, while hair samples were used as an index of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure from consumption of Hg contaminated fish. The mean level of Hg in urine (HgU) was 10.9 microg/L, and the mean level in hair (HgH) was 6.0 microg/g. Regression analysis showed a significant association (r = 0.404, p = 0.0007) between matched HgU and HgH samples. Mean HgU and HgU levels tended to be higher for children aged 6-14 years than for a younger group. The wide range of Hg levels in the urine and hair of Andean children of gold miners may place them at risk for neurodevelopmental and learning disorders.  相似文献

Summary Selective determinations of inorganic and organic mercury in red blood cells, hair and urine were made in samples collected from control persons (laboratory staffs and medical school students) and workers exposed to low levels of elemental and/or inorganic mercury.Inorganic mercury levels in red blood cells, plasma and urine were higher in the workers than in the control as a natural result of mercury exposure, but only some workers showed elevated inorganic mercury levels in hair, which suggested external contamination.Organic mercury levels in red blood cells, plasma and urine were elevated in the workers, but the hair values did not differ between the control and the workers. The atmospheric distribution and deposition of Hg in the area of the former Idrija Hg-mine, Slovenia, were investigated. Mapping of air Hg0 concentrations was performed to assess the spatial distribution and major sources of mercury to the atmosphere in the area. In addition, analyses of mercury speciation in the air over Idrija were performed during a 4-day sampling campaign in September 2006 to better understand the fate and transformation of Hg in the atmosphere of this specific mercury polluted site. The speciation results were then compared to the results of mercury speciation in the wet and throughfall deposition sampled on a precipitation event basis from October 2006 to September 2007. The Hg0 concentration in air was mostly below 10 ng m−3, with the highest concentration in the area of the former smelter complex exceeding 5000 ng m−3. Mercury-bearing airborne particles (TPM) seem to dominate the atmospheric Hg deposition, which revealed noticeable variations between precipitation events (11–76 ng m−2 day−1), mostly as a function of the amount of precipitation. Hg in precipitation was largely (∼50%) associated with the particulate phase (THgP). No correlation was found between the THgP and the dissolved phases (THgD), suggesting that particulate phase Hg is mostly the result of dry deposition. In the throughfall, significantly higher (2–10 fold) Hg concentrations than in associated event precipitation were observed, mostly due to Hg in the particulate phase (∼70% THg). As shown by SEM/EDXS microscopy, an important amount of mercury in the precipitation and throughfall samples is due to the presence of cinnabar particles as a result of the aeolian erosion of cinnabar-containing surfaces in the area.  相似文献

Methylmercury (MeHg) is one of the most risky substances to affect humans through fish consumption, and the fetus is known to be in the most susceptible group. Our objective in this study is to examine the relationships of total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations between umbilical cord tissue and other tissues as biomarkers of fetal exposure to MeHg in the Japanese population. In total, 116 paired samples were collected in three Japanese districts, the Tsushima Islands, Fukuoka City, and Katsushika ward of metropolitan Tokyo. THg was measured for hair and THg and MeHg were measured in cord tissues, maternal blood, and cord blood. The relationships among tissues in Hg concentrations were similar among districts. Therefore, we analyzed the relationships using all the samples. More than 90% of Hg in cord tissue, cord blood, and maternal blood was MeHg. THg and MeHg in cord blood was about two times higher than in maternal blood. A strong correlation was found between THg and MeHg in cord tissue. The cord tissue THg and MeHg showed a strong correlation with cord blood Hg, which is recognized as the best biomarker for fetal exposure to MeHg. The findings of this study indicate the significance of cord tissue THg and MeHg as biomarkers for fetal exposure to MeHg at parturition.  相似文献

Occupational exposure in copper smelters may produce various adverse health effects including cancer which, according to available epidemiologic data, is associated mainly with exposure to arsenic. Despite a number of well-documented studies reporting an increased risk of cancer among copper smelters workers, the data on genotoxic effects in this industry are scarce. In view of the above, an assessment of micronuclei (MN) frequency in peripheral blood lymphocytes and buccal epithelial cells from copper smelter workers was undertaken. Additionally, the clastogenic/aneugenic effect in lymphocytes was assessed with the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The study was conducted in three copper smelters in southwestern Poland. The subjects (n = 72) were enrolled among male workers at departments where As concentration in the air was up to at 80 μg/m3. Exposure was assessed by measurement of arsenic concentration in urine and toenail samples. The control group (n = 83) was recruited from healthy male individuals living in central Poland who did not report any exposure to known genotoxins. The results of our study showed a significant increase in MN frequency in peripheral blood lymphocytes and in buccal epithelial cells of smelter workers, compared to the controls (7.96 ± 4.28 vs. 3.47 ± 1.70 and 0.98 ± 0.76 vs. 0.50 ± 0.52, respectively). The FISH technique revealed the presence of clastogenic and aneugenic effects in peripheral blood lymphocytes in both groups. The clastogenic effect was slightly more pronounced in the smelter workers; however, the difference was not statistically significant. The mean arsenic concentrations in urine (total arsenic species) and in toenail samples in the exposed group were 54.04 ± 42.26 μg/l and 7.63 ± 7.24 μg/g, respectively, being significantly different from control group 11.01 ± 10.84 μg/l and 0.51 ± 0.05 μg/g. No correlation between As content in urine or toenail samples and the genotoxic effect was found under study.  相似文献
