It is shown on rats that intravenous administration of theNeisseria menignitidis lipopolysaccharide lowers the mean arterial pressure, myocardial contractility and vascular tone in the system of the left carotid artery. In rats exposed to gamma radiation and then to the lipopolysaccharide, the decrease in myocardial contractility and the degree of arterial hypotension were more pronounced than in those exposed to the lipopolysaccharide alone, but the vascular tone in the carotid artery system was reduced to a lesser extent. Results are presented from cherniluminescence assays performed with samples of whole blood and wool from sheep exposed to gamma radiation in a dose of 200 or 600 R. Assays for barium sulfate-stimulated luminol-dependent chemiluminescence emitted by whole blood of the exposed sheep showed decreased amplitudes of chemiluminescence bursts shortly after irradiation, while assays for the lioluminescence of their wool sampled at different times within a week postirradiation and then stored for six months before the assay demonstrated higher burst amplitudes for samples from the animals irradiated with the higher dose and increases in burst amplitudes with increasing intervals between irradiation and sampling. Superhigh frequency electromagnetic radiation of low intensity produces retrograde amnesia in rats tested for passive avoidance conditioning. Oxiracetam and aniracetam completely prevent the amnestic action of electromagnetic radiation, while nooglutil, piracetam, and centrophenoxine markedly weaken it. It is postulated that pyrrolidone-derived nootropics can be used for the pharmacological correction of disturbances in learning and memory caused by superhigh frequency electromagnetic radiation. The effect of ionizing radiation on the activity of succinate dehydrogenase (complex II) and succinate-cytochrome C-oxidoreductase in peripheral blood lymphocytes is studied on rats exposed to whole-body γ-irradiation in doses of 9.5–10.5 Gy. On day 5 after irradiation, when the number of lymphocytes is sharply reduced, enzyme activity in the remaining population is found to be reliably increased. These changes are not related to biological cycles. It is assumed that most of the survivors after high-dose irradiation are the cell populations maintaining a high level of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. Injecting mice with exogenous zinc-metallothioneine from rat liver at 2 mg/kg 5–10 min before their total-body irradiation resulted in a significantly increased 30-day survival rate. The radioprotective effect of zinc-metallothioneine was not associated with the influence of its constituents, since a model mixture composed of these (albumin, cysteine, and zinc) failed to protect. Lymphokinin injected into mice in a dose of 25,000 U/kg intraperitoneally before or after their single irradiation producing acute radiation sickness is found to prolong their survival. The optimal time for administering Lymphokinin depends on the radiation dose. Its survival-prolonging effect is most marked when it is injected 1 h or 24 h before or 23 h after exposure to a dose of 6.0 Gy. Changes in the microvessels, consisting in their dilatation and accelerated formation, and a shift of the peak of epitheliocyte proliferative activity are found to be the structural basis of the stimulating effect of infrared magnetic laser. Morphologic changes in connective-tissue cells determine both the proper development of the connective-tissue carcass, primarily of the fibroblasts, and the barrier protective and regulatory function of such cells as macrophages, neutrophils, plasma cells, eosinophils, and, last but not least, mast cells. Morphologic changes occurring during irradiation according to optimal schemes indicate activation of specific cell functions and are observed at earlier times.
