Burnishing is a plastic deformation process that reduces roughness while increasing hardness by introducing compressive residual stresses near the surface zone. These improvements will depend mainly on two fundamental variables: the applied load and the friction derived from the tool–surface interaction. Nevertheless, microstructural differences in the materials have not yet been considered within this interaction. This leads to a generalization of the process that can result in the failure of industrial components. Therefore, the aim of this work is to study the microstructural influence of the ball-burnishing process from a tribological perspective. Thus, martensitic and austenitic stainless steels were evaluated in terms of friction and surface integrity. The results show that parameterizing the process according to the tool–surface interaction is critical since improvements depend on friction as a function of the availability of plastic deformation of the crystallographic structures.  相似文献

The low plasticity burnished surface roughness is significantly affected by the low plasticity burnishing (LPB) parameters. This research proposed the analytical prediction model to predict the LPBed surface roughness and optimal LPB pressure based on Hertz contact mechanics and the slip-line field theory. In this study, the surface formatted process was divided into the smoothing stage (SS) and the indentation stage (IS). The smoothing mechanism of SS and the deterioration mechanism of IS were analyzed theoretically. The analytical prediction model for the LPBed surface roughness was proposed based on Hertz contact mechanics and slip-line field theory. The proposed analytical prediction model was validated by the LPBed surface roughness of AISI 1042, and the error of the analytically predicted results was less than 13.3%. After validation, the proposed model was applied to predict the LPBed surface roughness of Inconel 718. The single-factor experiments were conducted. The error between the proposed model prediction results and experimental results was less than 7% for the LPBed surface roughness of Inconel 718. The optimal LPB pressure interval was calculated to be [12.2 MPa, 17.5 MPa], corresponding to the experimental one as [12 MPa, 18 MPa]. It indicated that the proposed model could accurately predict the LPBed surface roughness and conduct the LPB processing.  相似文献

This article presents the results of tests aimed at determining the effect of slide burnishing parameters on the surface roughness of shafts made of 42CrMo4 heat-treatable steel. The burnishing process was carried out using tools with polycrystalline diamond and cemented carbide tips. Before burnishing, the samples were turned on a turning lathe to produce samples with an average surface roughness Ra = 2.6 µm. The investigations were carried out according to three-leveled Hartley’s poly selective quasi D (PS/DS-P: Ha3) plan, which enables a regression equation in the form of a second-order polynomial to be defined. Artificial neural network models were also used to predict the roughness of the surface of the shafts after slide burnishing. The input parameters of the process that were taken into account included the values of pressure, burnishing speed and feed rate. Overall, the burnishing process examined leads to a reduction in the value of the surface roughness described by the Ra parameter. The artificial neural networks with the best regression statistics predicted an average surface roughness of the shafts with R2 = 0.987. The lowest root-mean-square error and mean absolute error were obtained with all the network structures analysed that were trained with the quasi Newton algorithm.  相似文献

The present work describes an experimental investigation of the fatigue durability of AISI 304 and AISI 316L austenitic stainless steels, which have regular reliefs (RR) of the IV-th type, formed by ball burnishing (BB) on flat surfaces, using a computer numerical control (CNC) milling center. The methodology and the equipment used for obtaining regular reliefs, along with a vibration-induced fatigue test setup, are presented and described. The results from the BB process and the fatigue life experiments of the tested austenitic stainless steels are gathered, using the approach of factorial design experiments. It was found that the presence of RR of the IV-th type do not worsen the fatigue strength of the studied steels. The Pareto, t-test and Bayesian rule techniques are used to determine the main effects and the interactions of significance between ball burnishing regime parameters. A stochastic model is derived and is used to find when the probability of obtaining the maximum fatigue life of parts made of AISI 304 or 316L reaches its maximum value. It was found that when the deforming force, the amplitude of the sinewaves and their wavenumber are set at high values, and the feed rate is set at its low value, the probability to reach maximum fatigue life for the parts made of AISI 304 or 316L is equal to 97%.  相似文献

This paper focuses on a resonant system used to induce a low-amplitude movement and ultrasonic frequency to complement a ball burnishing process on a lathe. The system was characterized through the combination of different techniques. A full vibratory characterization of this process was undertaken with the purpose of demonstrating that the mechanical system—composed of the tool and the machine—does not present resonance phenomena during the execution of the operation that could lead to eventual failure. This dynamic analysis validates the adequateness of the tool when attached to an NC lathe, which is important to guarantee its future implementation in actual manufacturing contexts. A further aim was to confirm that the system succeeds in transmitting an oscillating signal throughout the material lattice. To this end, different static and dynamic techniques that measure different vibration ranges—including impact tests, acoustic emission measurement, and vibration measurement—were combined. An operational deflection shape model was also constructed. Results demonstrate that the only high frequency appearing in the process originated in the tool. The process was not affected by the presence of vibration assistance, nor by the burnishing preload or feed levels. Furthermore, the frequency of the assisting ultrasonic vibration was characterized and no signal due to possible damage in the material of the specimens was detected. These results demonstrate the suitability of the new tool in the vibration-assisted ball burnishing process.  相似文献

This article describes fretting behavior of zirconia and silicon nitride balls on an electro-deposited coating. Fretting tests are performed using a ball-on-flat configuration. The evolution of the kinetic friction coefficient is determined, along with slip ratio. Experimental results show that the steady-state friction coefficient between ceramic balls (Si3N4 and ZrO2) and an electro-deposited coating is about 0.06, lower than the value between AISI 52100 ball and the coating. After a steady-state sliding, the transition of the friction coefficient is varied with a ball. The friction coefficient for ZrO2 balls became a critical value after higher fretting cycles than those for Si3N4 and AISI 52100 balls. In addition, it is identified that two parameters can describe the transition of the friction coefficient. Finally, the evolution of the friction coefficient is expressed as an exponential or a power-law form.  相似文献

The disadvantages of widely used austenitic stainless steels are their low hardness and relatively low fatigue strength. Conventional chemical-thermal surface treatments are unsuitable for these steels since they create conditions for inter-granular corrosion. An effective alternative is a low-temperature surface treatment, creating an S-phase within the surface layer, but it has a high cost/quality ratio. Austenitic steels can increase their surface micro-hardness and fatigue strength via surface cold working. When the goal is to increase the rotating bending fatigue strength of austenitic chromium-nickel steels, and the requirements for significant wear resistance are not paramount, diamond burnishing (DB) has significant potential to increase the fatigue strength and, based on the cost/quality ratio, can successfully compete with low-temperature chemical-thermal treatments. The main objective of this study is to establish the effect of DB on the rotating fatigue strength of AISI 304 L chromium-nickel austenitic steel. The influence of DB parameters on the surface integrity (SI) characteristics was studied. Optimal DB parameters under minimum roughness and maximum micro-hardness criteria were obtained. Rotating bending fatigue tests of the diamond burnished (in a different manner) and untreated specimens were performed. DB implemented via parameters providing maximum micro-hardness increased fatigue limit by 38% compared to untreated specimens.  相似文献

This paper reports research on the frictional behavior of a textured surface against several materials under dry and lubricated conditions, and this is aimed to provide design guidelines on the surface texturing for wide-ranging industrial applications. Experiments were performed on a tribo-tester with the facility of simulating A ball-on-plate model in reciprocating motion under dry, oil-lubricated, and water-lubricated conditions. To study the frictional behavior of textured SiC against various materials, three types of ball-bearing –elements, 52100 steel, silicon nitride (Si3N4), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), were used. Friction and wear performance of an un-textured surface and two types of widely used micro-scale texture surfaces, grooves and circular dimples, were examined and compared. The results demonstrated that the effect of surface textures on friction and wear performance is influenced by texture parameters and the materials of friction pairs. The circular-dimple texture and the groove texture, with certain texture parameters, played a positive role in improving friction and wear performance under specific operating conditions used in this research for SiC–steel and SiC–Si3N4 friction pairs; however, there was no friction and wear improvement for the textured SiC–PTFE friction pair. The results of this study offer an understanding and a knowledge base to enhance the performance of bearing elements in complex interacting systems.  相似文献

The article presents the results of investigations into the depth of the plastically deformed surface layer in the roller burnishing process. The investigation was carried out in order to obtain information on the dependence relationship between the depth of plastic deformation, the pressure on the roller and the braking torque. The research was carried out according to the original method developed by the authors, in which the depth of plastic deformation is increased by applying a braking torque to the burnishing roller. In this method, it is possible to significantly increase (up to 20%) the depth of plastic deformation of the surface layer. The tests were carried out on a specially designed device on which the braking torque can be set and the force of the rolling resistance of the roller during burnishing can be measured. The tests were carried out on specimens made of C45 heat-treatable carbon steel. The dependence of the depth of the plastically deformed surface layer was determined for a given pressure force and variable braking moments. The depth of the plastically deformed layer was measured on the deformed end face of the ring-shaped samples. The microhardness in the sample cross-section and the evolution of the microstructure were both analysed.  相似文献

This paper discusses an in-depth experimental study on the fretting wear behavior of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) piezoelectric thin film against a Si3N4 ceramic sphere under air conditions. A fretting wear device with a ball-on-plate contact configuration was applied. The changes of displacement amplitude, normal force, and applied voltage were taken into account. The friction logs were used to determine the contact state of the PVDF thin film during the fretting test. The 3D topography instrument and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to measure the details of the surface morphology and wear volume. The test results of PVDF thin films under different normal force, displacement amplitude, and applied voltage are summarized through the collection and analysis of experimental data. It is shown that the creep and plastic deformation lead to obvious winkles at the contact surface, which may decrease the specific wear rate of PVDF thin films.  相似文献

Fretting wear is a common phenomenon that happens between contact parts when there is an oscillatory relative movement. To investigate wear characteristics history in the fretting process, the finite element method (FEM) is commonly applied to simulate the fretting by considering the wear in the model. In most literature publications, the wear coefficient is considered as a constant, which is not a real case based on the experimental results. To consider the variation of wear coefficient, a double-linear model is applied in this paper, and the tribologically transformed structure (TTS) phase is considered in the study of the wear coefficient variation model. By using these models for variable wear coefficient for both flat and cylinder, the difference of wear characteristics, plastic strain, and stress between variable wear coefficient model (VWCM) and constant wear coefficient model (CWCM) are analyzed. The results show that the variable wear coefficient has no significant effect on the wear characteristic at the end of the process in the gross sliding regime. However, in the partial slip regime, the effect of variable wear coefficient on wear characteristics is significant. Due to the difference in contact geometry in the fretting process between VWCM and CWCM, the tangential and shear stress and equivalent plastic strain also show differences during the fretting process.  相似文献

Two complementary approaches should be used for the full characterisation of friction pair components. The first approach consists of stereometric studies of machined as well as worn surface topography of the friction components with multiple measurement methods used. The second approach, tribometric studies, enables the tribological characteristics of the friction pair. This work presents the complete characterisation of polymeric pin and ceramic plate friction pair components based on studies with the use of three research instruments: an interference microscope, a scanning electron microscope and a tribological tester. The results of the studies showed that the same treatment conditions used for different but similar ceramic materials did not provide exactly the same characteristics of both the machined and worn surface topography. Moreover, the results showed that the material properties and machined surface topography of the ceramic component significantly affected the friction coefficient and linear wear as well as the wear intensity of the polymeric component. Connecting the two approaches, stereometric studies and tribometric studies, allowed for a better identification of the wear mechanism of the polymeric pin (i.e., abrasion, fatigue and adhesion wear) and the kind of wear products (polymeric material).  相似文献

In the present work, the surface integrity and flank wear of uncoated cermet inserts in dry turning of AISI 1045 steel were evaluated. Three-dimensional techniques were used to assess the surface roughness. Previously, finite element analysis was carried out to predict the cutting forces and heat distribution in the chip formation region. Cutting speed and feed were the parameters varied in the experiments. Feed is decisive in the final quality of the turned surface and cutting speed had little influence on this aspect. The surface was significantly damaged with the progression of the insert flank wear. Considering an average flank wear VBB of 0.1 mm, a tool life of 35 min was achieved using a cutting speed of 175 m/min, and of 23 min for a cutting speed of 275 m/min. Abrasive wear was predominant during the experiments. No microstructure defects were observed, as well as crack propagation or accentuated deformations near the machined surface region. Therefore, the dry turning of 1045 steel with cermet inserts route has proven extremely viable from the standpoints of tool life, surface integrity, chip formation, and sustainability.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the impact of slide burnishing on surface roughness parameters (Sa, Sz, Sp, Sv, Ssk, and Sku), topography, surface layer microhardness, residual stress, and mean positron lifetime (τmean). In the study, specimens of X6CrNiTi18 stainless steel were subjected to slide burnishing. The experimental variables were feed and slide burnishing force. The slide burnishing process led to changes in the surface structure and residual stress distribution and increased the surface layer microhardness. After slide burnishing, the analyzed roughness parameters decreased compared with their pre-treatment (grinding) values. The slide burnishing of X6CrNiTi18 steel specimens increased their degree of strengthening e from 8.77% to 42.74%, while the hardened layer thickness gh increased after the treatment from about 10 µm to 100 µm. The maximum compressive residual stress was about 450 MPa, and the maximum depth of compressive residual stresses was gσ = 1.1 mm. The positron mean lifetime τmean slightly yet systematically increased with the increase in burnishing force F, while an increase in feed led to changes of a different nature.  相似文献

The paper presents preliminary studies of a new innovative surface treatment method—the process of roller burnishing of macro-irregularities of the surface. As part of the work, the possibility of plastic shaping of the surface macrostructure with indentations (plateau structure), which will show anti-wear properties through appropriate surface shaping and the compressive stress state in the product’s top layer, was investigated. The essence of the paper is the analysis of one of the aspects of the application of this processing method, i.e., the influence of the elastic recovery of the product on its technological quality measured by dimensional deviation. The main objective of the work is to develop adequate methods and mathematical models to enable the design of the macro-asperities of the surface burnishing process to maintain the dimensional tolerance of the shaped parts. The results of dependencies of elastic recovery of the asperities and the deviation of height, Δht, for sample depths of burnishing were presented. The model tests of the elastic recovery of the model material using the visioplasticity method show that with the increase of the value of the vertical surface asperities, the value of the elastic recovery of the material decreases. The increase of the deviation of the asperities’ height causes a decrease in the value of elastic recovery. With the increase of the value of the vertical angle of the surface roughness, the value of the elastic recovery of the material is smaller.  相似文献

Electrodeposition has attracted tremendous interest in functional coatings due to its advantages of high efficiency, inexpensiveness and ease of implementation. In this work, nickel graphene oxide (Ni-GO), nickel silicon carbide (Ni-SiC) and nickel graphene oxide/silicon carbide (Ni-GO/SiC) composite coatings were electrodeposited on the 2218 aluminum alloy (2218AlA) substrate. The microstructure, microhardness, bonding strength and tribological behaviors of the composite coatings were carried out. According to the results obtained, the composite coatings were dense and compact, with no visible defects and microcracks, and well bonded to 2218AlA substrate. The microhardness of composite coatings was significantly increased compared to that of the 2218AlA substrate. The microhardness of Ni-SiC composite coating was the highest, reaching 3.14 times that of the 2218AlA substrate. The friction response time, friction coefficient and wear rate of the composite coatings were obviously lower. For the Ni-GO composite coating, the average friction coefficient is the smallest at 45.35% of the 2218AlA substrate, while the wear rate is the smallest at 46.97% of the 2218AlA substrate. However, the comprehensive tribological performances of the Ni-GO/SiC composite coating were superior. The abrasive and adhesive wear were the main wear mechanisms of composite coatings, but the degree of damage was different.  相似文献

The effect of displacement amplitude on fretting wear behavior and damage mechanisms of alloy 690 in air and nitrogen atmospheres was investigated in detail. The results showed that in air, the friction coefficient gradually increased with the increase in displacement amplitude which conformed to the universal law. In nitrogen, however, it had the highest point at the displacement amplitude of 60 μm due to very strong adhesion. Whether in air or nitrogen, the wear volume gradually increased with the increase in displacement amplitude. The wear volume in air was larger than that in nitrogen except at 30 μm. At 30 μm, the wear volume in air was slightly smaller. With an increase in displacement amplitude, a transformation of fretting running status between partial slip, mixed stick-slip, and final gross slip occurred along with the change of Ft-D curves from linear, to elliptic, to, finally, parallelogrammical. Correspondingly, the fretting regime changed from a partial slip regime to a mixed regime to a gross slip regime. With the increase in displacement amplitude, the transition from partial slip to gross slip in nitrogen was delayed as compared with in air due to the strong adhesion actuated by low oxygen content in a reducing environment. Whether in air or nitrogen, the competitive relation between fretting-induced fatigue and fretting-induced wear was prominent. The cracking velocity was more rapid than the wear. Fretting-induced fatigue dominated at 30 μm in air but at 30–60 μm in nitrogen. Fretting-induced wear won the competition at 45–90 μm in air but at 75–90 μm in nitrogen.  相似文献

Due to their excellent synergistic properties, Aluminum Matrix Composites (AMC) have achieved a high degree of prominence in different industries. In addition to strength, the wear resistance of materials is also an important criterion for numerous applications. The wear resistance depends on the surface topography as well as the working conditions of the interacting parts. Therefore, extensive experiments are being conducted to improve the suitability of engineering materials (including AMC) for different applications. This paper presents research on manufactured aluminum metal matrix composites reinforced with 10 wt.% of Al2SiO5 (aluminum sillimanite). The manufactured and prepared samples were subjected to surface topography measurements and to tribological studies both with and without lubricant using a block-on-ring tester. Based on the results, analyses of the surface topography (i.e., surface roughness parameters, Abbott–Firestone curve, and surface defects) as well as of the tribological characteristics (i.a. friction coefficient, linear wear, and wear intensity) were performed. Differences in the surface topography of the manufactured elements were shown. The surface topography had a significant impact on tribological characteristics of the sliding joints in the tests where lubrication was and was not used. Better tribological characteristics were obtained for the surfaces characterized by greater roughness (determined on the basis of both the profile and surface texture parameters). In the case of tribological tests with lubrication, the friction coefficient as well as the wear intensity was significantly lower compared to tribological tests without lubrication. However, lower values of the friction coefficient and wear intensity were still recorded for the surfaces that were characterized by greater roughness. The obtained results showed that it is important to analyze the surface topography because surface characteristics influence tribological properties.  相似文献

Mechanical surface treatments are needed to perform on components for fatigue life enhancement by introducing beneficial compressive residual stress and material strengthening. In this study, the combined turning with low plasticity burnishing (LPB) surface modification process was performed for the sake of improving mechanical properties of Inconel 718. Firstly, the evolution of microstructure and residual stress after the LPB process were analyzed with the aid of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Secondly, the tensile behavior of treated samples was investigated through tension tests. Finally, the micro-strengthening mechanism of Inconel 718, induced by the LPB process, was revealed. The results show that the peak compressive stress is increased by a factor of 4.2 after the LPB process. The grain refinement induced by the LPB process is attributed to the increase of average misorientation and the formation of high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs). The enhanced yield strength depends on the decreased average spacing and the increased HAGBs.  相似文献
