This paper presents the mechanical and microstructural characteristics of a lightweight aggregate geopolymer concrete (LWAGC) synthesized by the alkali-activation of a fly ash source (FA) before and after being exposed to elevated temperatures, ranging from 100 to 800 °C. The results show that the LWAGC unexposed to the elevated temperatures possesses a good strength-to-weight ratio compared with other LWAGCs available in the published literature. The unexposed LWAGC also shows an excellent strength development versus aging times, up to 365 days. For the exposed LWAGC to the elevated temperatures of 100 to 800 °C, the results illustrate that the concretes gain compressive strength after being exposed to elevated temperatures of 100, 200 and 300 °C. Afterward, the strength of the LWAGC started to deteriorate and decrease after being exposed to elevated temperatures of 400 °C, and up to 800 °C. Based on the mechanical strength results of the exposed LWAGCs to elevated temperatures of 100 °C to 800 °C, the relationship between the exposure temperature and the obtained residual compressive strength is statistically analyzed and achieved. In addition, the microstructure investigation of the unexposed LWAGC shows a good bonding between aggregate and mortar at the interface transition zone (ITZ). However, this bonding is subjected to deterioration as the LWAGC is exposed to elevated temperatures of 400, 600 and 800 °C by increasing the microcrack content and swelling of the unreacted silicates.  相似文献

In view of the devastating outcomes of fires and explosions, it is imperative to research the dynamic responses of concrete structures at high temperatures. For this purpose, the effects of the strain rate and high temperatures on the dynamic tension behavior and energy characteristics of high-strength concrete were investigated in this paper. Dynamic tests were conducted on high-strength concrete after exposure to the temperatures of 200, 400, and 600 °C by utilizing a 74 mm diameter split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) apparatus. We found that the quasi-static and dynamic tensile strength of high-strength concrete gradually decreased and that the damage degree rose sharply with the rise of temperature. The dynamic tensile strength and specific energy absorption of high-strength concrete had a significant strain rate effect. The crack propagation law gradually changed from directly passing through the coarse aggregate to extending along the bonding surface between the coarse aggregate and the mortar matrix with the elevation of temperature. When designing the material ratio, materials with high-temperature resistance and high tensile strength should be added to strengthen the bond between the mortar and the aggregate and to change the failure mode of the structure to resist the softening effect of temperature.  相似文献

Fiber reinforcement of concrete is an effective technique of providing ductility to concrete, increasing its flexural residual strength while reducing its potential for cracking due to drying shrinkage. There are currently a wide variety of industrial fibers on the market. Recycled steel fibers (RSF) from tires could offer a viable substitute of industrialized fibers in a more sustainable and eco-friendly way. However, mistrust exists among users, based on fear that the recycling process will reduce the performance, coupled with the difficulty of characterization of the geometry of the RSF, as a consequence of the size variability introduced by the recycling process. This work compares the behavior of RSF from tires compared with industrialized steel or polypropylene fibers, evaluating the fresh state, compressive strength, flexural residual strength, and drying behavior. The concept of Equivalent Fiber Length (EFL) is also defined to help the statistical geometrical characterization of the RSF. A microstructural analysis was carried out to evaluate the integration of the fiber in the matrix, as well as the possible presence of contaminants. The conclusion is reached that the addition of RSF has a similar effect to that of industrialized fibers on concrete’s properties when added at the same percentage.  相似文献

Geopolymer concrete possesses superior fire resistance compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based concrete; however, there are concerns regarding its vulnerability when exposed to real fire events. In the present study, the fire resistance of fly-ash-based geopolymer concrete was evaluated relative to that of OPC-based concrete. Concrete specimens of standard strength grades of 20, 40, and 60 MPa were exposed to fire at 500 and 1200 °C for 2 h to simulate real fire events. Visual observation was performed, mass loss and residual compressive strength were measured, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses were conducted. OPC-based concrete suffered major cracks accompanied with spalling for the high-strength specimen, while geopolymer concrete experienced minor cracks with no spalling. Mass losses of the geopolymer concrete—of 1.69% and 4%, after the exposure to fire at 500 and 1200 °C, respectively—were lower than those of the OPC-based concrete. More than 50% of the residual compressive strength for low- and medium-strength geopolymer concrete, after the exposure to fire at 1200 °C, was maintained. After the exposure to fire at 500 °C, the residual compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete increased from 13 to 45%, while the OPC-based concrete was not able to sustain its compressive strength. SEM images showed that the matrix of the geopolymer concrete, after the exposure to fire, was denser than that of the OPC-based concrete, while the FTIR spectra of the geopolymer concrete showed a minor shift in wavelength. Hence, our findings indicate that fly-ash-based geopolymer concrete has an excellent fire resistance as compared to OPC-based concrete.  相似文献

Concrete is a composite material that is commonly used in the construction industry. It will certainly be exposed to fires of varying intensities when used in buildings and industries. The major goal of this article was to look into the influence of mineral additions such as foundry sand and marble dust on the residual characteristics of concrete. To examine the behavior of residual characteristics of concrete after fire exposure, marble dust was substituted for cement and fine sand was substituted for foundry sand in varying amounts ranging from 0% to 20%. It aided in the better disposal of waste material so that it might be used as an addition. The purpose of the experiment was to see how increased temperatures affected residual properties of concrete, including flexural strength, compressive strength, tensile strength, static as well as dynamic elastic modulus, water absorption, mass loss, and ultrasonic pulse velocity. At temperatures of 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1000 °C, the typical fire exposure behavior of concrete was investigated. The effects of two cooling techniques, annealing and quenching, on the residual properties of concrete after exposure to high temperatures were investigated in this study. Replacement of up to 10% of the cement with marble dust and fine sand with foundry sand when concrete is exposed to temperatures up to 400 °C does not influence the behavior of concrete. At temperatures above 400 °C, however, the breakdown of concrete, which includes marble dust and foundry sand, causes a rapid deterioration in the residual properties of concrete, primarily for replacement of more than 10%.  相似文献

The cement industry has brought serious environmental pollution problems. In the background of ecological civilization, accelerating rational use of waste resources plays an important role in protecting the environment. In this study, self-compacting concrete (SCC) is prepared using fly ash and lime powder as supplementary cementitious materials by replacing 50%, 60%, and 70% of ordinary Portland cement. By systematically analyzing the influence of the fly ash replacement rate on the workability and mechanical properties of SCC, steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing 60% fly ash is chosen for further study, and steel fiber is added at the percentages of 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, and 1.00%. The performances in fresh and hardened states are investigated in terms of workability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and axial compression deformation property. The obtained outcomes indicate that although the incorporation of fly ash can improve the workability of the mixture, there is a negative correlation between the mechanical properties of SCC and the fly ash replacement rate. For steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing 60% fly ash, when the content of steel fibers exceeds 0.75%, the workability decreases sharply, and even when the volume fraction is 1.00%, the passing ability cannot meet the requirements of the technical specifications for applications of self-compacting concrete. The analysis results for mechanical properties show that compressive strength is not changed significantly with increasing percentage of steel fibers. The steel fibers strengthen splitting tensile strength and flexural strength significantly, and compared with that of without steel fibers, they increased by 22% and 58%, respectively, with steel fibers up to 1.00%. Additionally, the parameters of the axial compression deformation property are improved by introducing steel fibers, especially the strain energy (Vε) and relative toughness (Γ) of steel-fiber-reinforced SCC containing a high level of fly ash.  相似文献

Mechanical properties and data analysis for the prediction of different mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete (GPC) were investigated. A relatively large amount of test data from 126 past works was collected, analyzed, and correlation between different mechanical properties and compressive strength was investigated. Equations were proposed for the properties of splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, and strain corresponding to peak compressive strength. The proposed equations were found accurate and can be used to prepare a state-of-art report on GPC. Based on data analysis, it was found that there is a chance to apply some past proposed equations for predicting different mechanical properties. CEB-FIP equations for the prediction of splitting tensile strength and strain corresponding to peak compressive stress were found to be accurate, while ACI 318 equations for splitting tensile and elastic modulus overestimates test data for GPC of low compressive strength.  相似文献

In the case of fire, explosive spalling often occurs in cementitious composites due to dense microstructure and high pore-pressure. Polymer fibers were proved to be effective in mitigating such behavior. However, deterioration of these fiber-reinforced cementitious composites inevitably occurs, which is vital for the prediction of structural performance and prevention of catastrophic disaster. This paper concentrates on the behavior and mechanism of the deterioration of polyvinyl alcohol fiber-reinforced engineered cementitious composite (PVA-ECC) after exposure to elevated temperatures. Surface change, cracking, and spalling behavior of the cubic specimens were observed at room temperature, and after exposure to 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1200 °C. Losses in specimen weight and compressive strength were evaluated. Test results indicated that explosive spalling behavior was effectively prevented with 2.0 vol% polyvinyl alcohol fiber although the strength monotonically decreased with heating temperature. X-ray diffraction curves showed that the calcium hydroxide initially decomposed in the range of 400–600 °C, and finished beyond 600 °C, while calcium silicate hydrate began at around 400 °C and completely decomposed at approximately 800 °C. Micrographs implied a reduction in fiber diameter at 200 °C, exhibiting apparent needle-like channels beyond 400 °C. When the temperature was increased to 600 °C and above, the dents were gradually filled with newly produced substance due to the synergistic effect of thermal expansion, volume expansion of chemical reactions, and pore structure coarsening  相似文献

This study aims to evaluate the mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced reactive powder concrete (CFRPC) after exposure to cryogenic temperature. The mechanical properties of plain RPC and CFRPC with carbon fiber volume contents of 0, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% were examined after exposure to 20 °C, −5 °C, −15 °C, and −25 °C for 72 h. The effect of fiber contents and exposure temperatures on the cubic and axial compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus, and peak strain were systematically reported and analyzed. The results showed adding carbon fiber to RPC could significantly enhance the strength and slightly improve ductility performance. Additionally, CFRPC with 1.0% fiber content showed the best mechanical properties. The maximum increases in cubic and axial compressive strength and tensile strength were 26.0%, 25.7%, and 21.8%, the elastic modulus was 13.2%, and the peak strain was 13.0% over the plain RPC. Additionally, all mechanical properties continued to degrade with decreasing temperature. After exposure to −25 °C, the cubic, axial compressive strength, and tensile strength of CFRPC degraded to 82.2–84.9%, 80.7–87.5%, and 72.7–73.7% of the normal temperature strength, respectively. In addition, the linear relationship equation between the discount factor of each mechanical property and the temperature was established. Finally, the equation for the stress–strain ascending curve of CFRPC described by a quadratic polynomial was proposed, which fitted well with the experimental results.  相似文献

In this study, the influence of different fire conditions on tempered 32CrB3 steel bolts of Grade 8.8 was investigated. In this research different temperatures, heating time, and cooling methods were correlated with the microstructure, hardness, and residual strength of the bolts. Chosen parameters of heat treatments correspond to simulated natural fire conditions that may occur in public facilities. Heat treated and unheated samples cut out from a series of tested bolts were subjected to microstructural tests using light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), XRD phase analysis, and the quantitative analysis of the microstructure. The results of the microstructure tests were compared with the results of strength tests, including hardness and the ultimate residual tensile strength of the material (UTS) in the initial state and after the heat treatments. Results of the investigations revealed considerable microstructural changes in the bolt material as a result of exposing it to different fire conditions and cooling methods. A conducted comparative analysis also showed a significant effect of all such factors as the temperature level of the simulated fire, its duration, and the fire-fighting method on the mechanical properties of the bolts.  相似文献

Concrete is susceptible to damage during and after high-temperature exposure (most frequently in fire). The concrete partial strength re-gain after a high-temperature exposure obtained by the rehydration process is undoubtedly an advantage of this construction material. However, to use fire-damaged concrete, one has to know why the strength deteriorates and what makes the partial re-gain. Within this framework, the paper aims to find what factors influence the strength re-gain. Moreover, an attempt is made to introduce a measure collecting various influences such as the modified heat accumulation factor—accounting only for that which is important for the process, the temperature decomposing cement paste (i.e., above 400 °C). Several factors, i.e., peak temperature, heating time and rate, cooling regime, post-fire re-curing, concrete composition, age of concrete at exposure, porosity, load level at exposure, and heat accumulation are presented by their influence on the relative residual compressive strength, i.e., a portion of initial strength that is obtained after temperature exposure and strength re-gain. Since the relative strength unifies various concretes, a more general assessment and discussion are presented based on the experimental results and correlation factors. As fundamental influences determining the residual strength, the heating time, peak temperature, cooling, or post-heating re-curing regimes are found with the load level at exposure being inadequately examined. This paper also shows the superiority of the modified heat accumulation factor, but the results obtained are not satisfactory, and additional experimental data are necessary to develop a theoretical model of the residual strength.  相似文献

High-strength concrete is used to provide quality control for concrete structures, yet it has the drawback of brittleness. The inclusion of fibers improves the ductility of concrete but negatively affects the fresh properties of fiber-reinforced concrete. The effects of different fine to coarse aggregate ratios on the fresh and hardened properties of steel fiber reinforced concrete were investigated in this study. Mixtures were prepared with various fine to coarse aggregate (FA/CA) ratios incorporating 1% steel fiber content (by volume) at constant water to cement ratio. The workability, unit weight, and temperature of the concrete in the fresh state, and the mechanical properties of steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) were investigated. The inclusion of fiber in concrete influenced the mobility of concrete in the fresh state by acting as a barrier to the movement of coarse aggregate. It was observed that the concrete with an FA/CA ratio above 0.8 showed better flowability in the fresh state, whilst an above 0.9 FA/CA ratio requires excessive superplasticizer to maintain the flowability of the mixtures. The compressive and flexural strength of SFRC increased with an increase in the FA/CA ratio by around 10% and 28%, respectively. Experimental values of compressive strength and flexural strength showed good agreement, however, modulus of elasticity demonstrated slightly higher values. The experimentally obtained measurements of the mechanical properties of SFRC conformed reasonably well with the available existing prediction equations, and further enabled establishing predictive isoresponse interactive equations within the scope of the investigation domain.  相似文献

Geopolymer concrete has the potential to replace ordinary Portland cement which can reduce carbon dioxide emission to the environment. The addition of different amounts of steel fibers, as well as different types of end-shape fibers, could alter the performance of geopolymer concrete. The source of aluminosilicate (fly ash) used in the production of geopolymer concrete may lead to a different result. This study focuses on the comparison between Malaysian fly ash geopolymer concrete with the addition of hooked steel fibers and geopolymer concrete with the addition of straight-end steel fibers to the physical and mechanical properties. Malaysian fly ash was first characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to identify the chemical composition. The sample of steel fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete was produced by mixing fly ash, alkali activators, aggregates, and specific amounts of hook or straight steel fibers. The steel fibers addition for both types of fibers are 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% by volume percentage. The samples were cured at room temperature. The physical properties (slump, density, and water absorption) of reinforced geopolymer concrete were studied. Meanwhile, a mechanical performance which is compressive, as well as the flexural strength was studied. The results show that the pattern in physical properties of geopolymer concrete for both types of fibers addition is almost similar where the slump is decreased with density and water absorption is increased with the increasing amount of fibers addition. However, the addition of hook steel fiber to the geopolymer concrete produced a lower slump than the addition of straight steel fibers. Meanwhile, the addition of hook steel fiber to the geopolymer concrete shows a higher density and water absorption compared to the sample with the addition of straight steel fibers. However, the difference is not significant. Besides, samples with the addition of hook steel fibers give better performance for compressive and flexural strength compared to the samples with the addition of straight steel fibers where the highest is at 1.0% of fibers addition.  相似文献

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is an advanced concrete with superior mechanical strength, ductility and durability properties. However, the influence of steel fiber on its constitutive laws and the specimen geometric dimension effect on its strength had not been paid enough attention. To investigate the effect of steel fibers on the properties of UHPC, specimens with different fiber volume contents and fiber types were tested. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties of UHPC at different ages from 3 days to 28 days were conducted. Moreover, specimens with various geometric dimensions were also prepared to study the effect of specimen geometric dimensions (dog-bone-shaped, prism and cylinder specimens) on the properties of UHPC. The results indicated that elastic modulus, tensile peak stress and the corresponding strain increased as the fiber volume content and curing age increased. Specimens with hooked-end fibers exhibited better tensile performance than those with straight fibers. Furthermore, different geometric dimensions of specimens significantly influenced the tensile properties of UHPC. Based on the experimental results, conversion factors were suggested for the transformation of strength obtained from specimens with different geometric dimensions to reference specimens. In addition, both compressive and tensile constitutive laws were proposed to generate the stress–strain relationship of UHPC.  相似文献

Over the years, leaked fluids from aircraft have caused severe deterioration of airfield pavement. The combined effect of hot exhaust from the auxiliary power unit of military aircraft and spilt aviation oils have caused rapid pavement spalling. If the disintegrated concreted pieces caused by spalling are sucked into the jet engine, they may cause catastrophic damage to the aircraft engine or physical injury to maintenance crews. This study investigates the effectiveness of incorporating hybrid fibres into ordinary concrete to improve the residual mechanical and thermal properties to prevent spalling damage of pavement. Three fibre-reinforced concrete samples were made with micro steel fibre and polyvinyl alcohol fibre with a fibre content of zero, 0.3%, 0.5% and 0.7% by volume fraction. These samples were exposed to recurring high temperatures and aviation oils. Tests were conducted to measure the effects of repeated exposure on the concrete’s mechanical, thermal and chemical characteristics. The results showed that polyvinyl alcohol fibre-, steel fibre- and hybrid fibre-reinforced concrete suffered a 52%, 40% and 26.23% of loss of initial the compressive strength after 60 cycles of exposure to the conditions. Moreover, due to the hybridisation of concrete, flexural strength and thermal conductivity was increased by 47% and 22%. Thus, hybrid fibre-reinforced concrete performed better in retaining higher residual properties and exhibited no spalling of concrete.  相似文献
