To evaluate the effects of breakfast habits on the quality of life in young women in Japan, the relation between breakfast habits and menstrual and intestinal disorders was estimated by responses to a questionnaire. Subjects were recruited from young Japanese female students of Ashiya College ranging in age from 18 to 20 years. Breakfast habits were classified into three groups (group I, having breakfast every morning, n=289; group II, having breakfast one to six times per week, n=106; group III, having breakfast less than once a week, n=44). The intensity of dysmenorrhea was classified into three grades (score 1, free of pain or painful, but without need for analgesic; score 2, painful, requiring analgesic; score 3, painful, not relieved by analgesic). The grades of bowel movement were classified into three groups (score 1, no more than once a week; score 2, two to six times a week; score 3, every day). Group II and group III had significantly higher scores for dysmenorrhea compared with group I. Students in group III showed a tendency toward constipation. Since dysmenorrhea is a risk factor for psychological disorders as well as gynecological diseases, the present study suggests the importance of eating breakfast to the quality of life of young women.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The association among dysmenorrhea, chronic pain, and conditions classified as central sensitivity syndromes (CSS) is largely unknown. We investigated the co-occurrence of dysmenorrhea with chronic pain and other CSS (e.g., fibromyalgia, migraines); and, whether severity of menstrual symptoms was associated with severity of chronic pain and of somatic symptoms. Women from a mid-sized Canadian university women (N = 248, Mage = 21.52) completed measures of menstrual pain severity, chronic pain severity, somatic symptoms severity, and the presence of comorbid CSS. Pearson’s correlations assessed the relationship between severity of dysmenorrhea, chronic pain, and somatic symptoms. MANOVA procedures assessed the interaction between dysmenorrhea and chronic pain and χ2 analyses were used to test the frequency of CSS among women with dysmenorrhea. Higher ratings of menstrual symptom severity were associated with increased chronic pain severity (r =.66, p <.001), and somatic symptom severity (r =.66, p <.001). Women with dysmenorrhea were not more likely to experience chronic pain, but were more likely to report a CSS, χ2 (1) = 5.12, p <.05. Dysmenorrhea symptoms may extend beyond the menstrual phase and be associated with more severe symptoms among women with comorbid pain and somatic concerns.  相似文献

Recruiting adolescents into smoking cessation programs has been challenging, and there is a lack of effective smoking cessation interventions for this age group. We aimed to assess whether the approach of using aging images can be used to recruit young, female smokers for a smoking cessation course. In this study, 853 14- to 18-year-old subjects were photographed (2006-2007). After software-aided aging, the images evoked strong emotions, especially in subjects with an advanced motivational stage to quit. Twenty-four percent of current smokers reported that the aging images increased their motivation to quit smoking (pre-contemplation: 8%; contemplation: 32%; and preparation: 71%). In multivariate analyses, the aged images had a high motivational impact to quit smoking that was associated with an increased readiness to stop smoking and the individual's assessment of the aging images as shocking, but not with the number of previous attempts to quit and the assessment of the pictures as realistic. However, it was not possible to recruit the study population for a smoking cessation course. We concluded that aging images are a promising intervention for reaching young women and increasing their motivation to stop smoking. However, smoking cessation courses may not be appropriate for this age group: none of the recruits agreed to take a cessation course.  相似文献

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), frequently already present in young subjects, has been linked to reduced growth hormone levels and signaling. Similar hormonal changes occur during metabolic acidosis (MA), which may thus contribute to an increased NAFLD risk. Because subclinical MA can be diet induced, we aimed to examine whether a higher diet-dependent acid load during adolescence is prospectively associated with several currently used NAFLD surrogates in young adulthood. Dietary acidity during adolescence (boys:10-15 y, girls: 9-14 y) was calculated as potential renal acid load (PRAL) from at least three 3-d weighed dietary records according to a published algorithm considering dietary protein and minerals in 145 healthy participants. Routine measurements derived from blood analysis and anthropometric data in participants' young adulthood (18-25 y) were used to determine the NAFLD surrogates alanine-aminotransferase (ALT), hepatic steatosis index (HSI), and fatty liver index (FLI). Sex-stratified linear regression models, adjusted for dietary fiber, saturated fat, protein, and adolescent BMI SD scores, were run with PRAL as the independent variable. Dietary PRAL during puberty was positively associated with ALT (P = 0.02), HSI (P = 0.002), and FLI (P = 0.005) in adult females but not males. Females with an adolescent dietary acid load in the highest tertile had 3.5, 4.4, and 4.5 higher values of ALT, HSI, and FLI as adults, respectively, compared to females with the lowest PRAL. The present findings suggest that higher dietary acidity in adolescence may be prospectively associated with hepatic lipid accumulation in females. Whether this relationship is due to the higher proton load or rather represents an unhealthy dietary pattern requires further investigation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported on the utility of the Recommended Foods Score (RFS), a measure of overall diet quality, in detecting associations between diet and mortality in a cohort of older women. Using additional follow-up, we have now extended our analysis to detailed studies of associations between RFS and the mortality and incidence from common cancers. METHODS: The RFS, the sum of 23 recommended food items consumed at least weekly, was computed from a 62-item food frequency questionnaire completed at baseline by 42 254 women with a mean age of 61 years. Multivariate adjusted relative risk (RR) of cancer mortality and incidence of the cancers for which we were able to obtain data in relation to quartiles of RFS were examined using proportional hazards regression analyses after a median follow-up period of 9.5 years. RESULTS: We observed that RFS was inversely associated with total mortality (RR = 0.8; P < 0.001) cancer mortality (RR = 0.74; P < 0.001) as well as mortality from cancers of the breast (RR = 0.75; P < 0.06), colon/rectum (RR = 0.49; P < 0.01) and lung (RR = 0.54; P < 0.001). The risk of incident lung cancer (RR = 0.62; P < 0.001) was reduced in women in the highest vs the lowest quartile of RFS; for incident cancers of the breast, colorectum, endometrium, ovaries, and bladder, there was no RFS association. CONCLUSION: A dietary pattern reflecting a higher RFS was associated with decreased overall mortality in women, specifically cancers of the lung, colon/rectum, and to a lesser extent breast. Incidence was only decreased for lung cancers. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that a high RFS dietary pattern, or associated lifestyle factors, might affect cancer progression and survival.  相似文献

Data from Food Frequency Questionnaires and Health Behavior Surveys of 93 first year college women were analyzed for diet, activity, and other health behaviors. Body mass index was positively associated with saturated fat and inversely associated with fiber intake. Fifty-one percent of students took vitamin supplements; this was associated with higher iron and folate intakes and greater physical activity. Sixty-six percent of students never smoked; 10% smoked to control their weight. Smokers had lower fiber and higher alcohol intakes. Sixty-one percent of students drank and 50% had been drunk in the last month. Forty percent felt that they were overweight, 57% dieted, and 29% reported out of control eating. More than 50% of students were sexually active, and 18% had been tested for HIV infection. After adjusting for energy intake, physical activity showed a significant association with the healthy eating pattern. These findings suggest that healthful behaviors occurred together.  相似文献

There is growing evidence that prenatal exposures may influence later breast cancer risk. This matched case-control study used linked New York State birth and tumor registry data to examine the association between birth characteristics and breast cancer risk among women aged 14-37 years. Cases were women diagnosed with breast cancer between 1978 and 1995 who were also born in New York after 1957 (n = 484). For each case, selected controls were the next six liveborn females with the same maternal county of residence. The authors found a J-shaped association between birth weight and breast cancer risk, and very high birth weight (> or =4,500 g) was associated with the greatest elevation in risk (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 3.10, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.18, 7.97). The association of maternal age with breast cancer risk was also J-shaped, with maternal age of more than 24 years showing a positive, linear association (adjusted OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.18, 3.18 for maternal age > or =35 vs. 20-24 years; p for trend = 0.02). In contrast, women born very preterm had a lower risk (adjusted OR = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.79 for gestational age <33 vs. > or =37 weeks). These findings support a role for early life factors in the development of breast cancer in very young women.  相似文献

BackgroundChildhood maltreatment has been linked to adulthood cardiovascular disease (CVD). Little is known about the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) in late adolescence and young adulthood and CVD risk later in adulthood.PurposeTo examine whether IPV perpetration and victimization experienced in late adolescence and young adulthood are associated with CVD risk among adults in the United States and whether this relationship differs by sex.MethodsData include 9976 participants (50% female) in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Physical and sexual IPV were measured at wave 3 (2001/02) with items from the revised Conflict Tactics Scales. Participants'30-year risk of CVD was calculated at wave 4 (2008/09) using a Framingham prediction model. Linear regression models adjusted for confounders and IPV by sex interaction terms were tested to examine the relationship.ResultsThe mean CVD risk score was 13.18% (95% CI: 12.71, 13.64). Aone-standard deviation increase in the victimization score was associated with a 0.28% (95% CI: 0.03, 0.54) increase in CVD risk. Perpetration was similarly positively associated with CVD risk (beta: 0.33, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.62). When measured as a composite, all violence types were associated with increased CVD risk but only prior exposure to both victimization and perpetration reached statistical significance (0.62%, 95% CI: 0.01, 1.22). No differences by sex were detected.ConclusionsEffect sizes are not large, but early detection of increased CVD risk in this relatively young population is notable and worthy of further study to inform the clinical response.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Replacement of milk with sugar-containing beverages could affect calcium intake and overall diet quality. OBJECTIVE: To describe dairy food, 100% juice and added sugar beverage intakes, contributions of dairy foods to diet quality, and effects of beverages on diet quality in young children. METHODS: We surveyed participants in the Iowa Fluoride Study (n = 645) at ages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 years and calculated intakes for 1-5 years (i.e. weighted averages). Nutrient, dairy food and beverage intakes were obtained from 3-day diaries; nutrient adequacy ratios were calculated as the nutrient intake to Recommended Dietary Allowance/Adequate Intake ratio; and dairy-dependent percentages were calculated as fractions of total diet nutrient adequacy ratios (truncated at 1) not met by non-dairy foods. RESULTS: Milk intakes were inversely associated with intakes of juice drinks (2, 4, 5 and 1-5 years), soda pop (2, 3, 4, 5 and 1-5 years) and added sugar beverages (2, 3, 4, 5 and 1-5 years). Dairy dependent fractions of 1-5 year nutrient adequacy ratios were 68% for calcium and 61% for vitamin D. Higher 1-5 year calcium adequacy was predicted by higher energy, higher other dairy and lower added sugar beverage intakes while higher vitamin D adequacy was predicted by higher energy and higher other dairy intakes. Overall diet quality was predicted by higher energy, higher other dairy, lower 100% juice and lower added sugar beverage intakes. CONCLUSIONS: Dairy foods remain an important source of calcium and vitamin D, while added sugar beverages and, to a lesser extent, 100% juice decrease diet quality of young children.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Relationships between micronutrients and dairy product intake and changes in body weight and composition over two years were investigated. DESIGN: Two year prospective non-concurrent analysis of the effect of calcium intake on changes in body composition during a two year exercise intervention. SUBJECTS: 54 normal weight young women, 18 to 31 years of age. MEASURES OF OUTCOME: Mean intakes of nutrients of interest were determined from three-day diet records completed at baseline and every six months for two years. The change in total body weight and body composition (assessed by dual x-ray absorptiometry) from baseline to two years was also determined. RESULTS: Total calcium/kilocalories and vitamin A together predicted (negatively and positively, respectively) changes in body weight (R2 = 0.19) and body fat (R2 = 0.27). Further, there was an interaction of calcium and energy intake in predicting changes in body weight, such that, only at lower energy intakes, calcium intake (not adjusted for energy) predicted changes in body weight. CONCLUSIONS: Regardless of exercise group assignment, calcium adjusted for energy intake had a negative relationship and vitamin A intake a positive relationship with two year changes in total body weight and body fat in young women aged 18 to 31 years. Thus, subjects with high calcium intake, corrected by total energy intake, and lower vitamin A intake gained less weight and body fat over two years in this randomized exercise intervention trial.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between diet and the onset of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women aged 40 y plus. DESIGN AND SETTING: The Leicestershire MRC Incontinence Study - a prospective longitudinal study of the prevalence, incidence and aetiology of urinary symptoms. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 5816 women aged 40 y plus and living in the community. Urinary symptoms were reported in a postal questionnaire at baseline and at 1-y follow-up. Dietary intake was assessed in a food frequency questionnaire at baseline. RESULTS: Intakes of total fat, saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids were associated with an increased risk of SUI onset 1 y later. Of the micronutrients studied, zinc and vitamin B12 were positively associated with SUI onset. CONCLUSION: The results from this prospective study suggest there may be an aetiological association between certain components of the diet and the onset of SUI. The findings need confirming and possible mechanisms to explain these associations need further investigation.  相似文献

目的对柔性辟谷技术是否以及能够在多大程度上减轻痛经症状进行研究,旨在为将该技术用于改善原发性痛经症状提供依据。方法招募原发性痛经志愿者18名,采用连续1周柔性辟谷方式进行干预,期间收集主观反馈资料,评价柔性辟谷对原发性痛经的改善效果。结果 83.3%的志愿者主观反馈柔性辟谷后痛经情况得到改善,具体表现包括经血血量恢复正常、血块减少、经期疼痛感减轻、经期心理状况改善等。结论初步结果确证柔性辟谷技术对改善青年女性原发性痛经具有一定效果,可成为青年女性缓解原发性痛经的一种可行性方案。后续将在此研究结果基础上结合多种内分泌等指标等进行深入的机理研究。  相似文献

PURPOSE: To explore the prevalence of dysmenorrhea among senior high school girls in Perth, Western Australia, its impact on school, sporting, and social activities, students' management strategies, and their knowledge of available treatment. METHODS: A total of 388 female students in Grades 11 and 12 at three metropolitan secondary schools completed an anonymous questionnaire administered during class time. The following definition of dysmenorrhoea was used: any type of pain or discomfort associated with menstrual periods including cramps, nausea, and headaches. RESULTS: The reported prevalence of dysmenorrhea among these girls was 80%; 53% of those girls with dysmenorrhea reported that it limited their activities. In particular, 37% said that dysmenorrhea affected their school activities. The most common medication used by those reporting dysmenorrhea was simple analgesics (53%), followed by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), used by 42%. More than a quarter of respondents (27%) were unaware that NSAIDs were a possible treatment option for dysmenorrhea. CONCLUSION: The prevalence and impact of dysmenorrhea on Grade 11 and 12 girls is high, and they lack knowledge of and experience with effective treatment. Health education measures are needed in this area to prevent unnecessary suffering and interruption to school routine.  相似文献
