Optometric therapy for the left brain injured patient.

This article discusses the role of optometric visual therapy in the rehabilitation of left head trauma patients. It overviews the functions of the left hemisphere and the consequences of traumatic brain injury. A patient who was helped by this perceptual therapy is presented. An overview of the therapy approach used for this patient is discussed.     

Heterotopic brain tissue in the orbit: case report.

A case of heterotopic brain tissue within the orbit is reported. Previously reported cases of this condition are reviewed, with particular reference to the pathogenesis and visual outcome.     

Rival ideas about binocular rivalry.

Binocular rivalry has been used to investigate neural correlates of visual awareness. For this investigation to succeed, however, it is necessary to know what rivals during binocular rivalry. Recent work has raised questions about whether rivalry is between eyes or between stimuli. We find that stimulus rivalry occurs only within a limited range of spatial and temporal parameters--otherwise eye rivalry dominates.     

Attitudes about women in optometry.

A survey was conducted to examine attitudes that affect women in optometry. Most respondents felt that women have greater difficulty than men entering private practice. On the other hand, the majority felt that female optometrists do not find it more difficult to be employed by other ODs, MDs, or to work in corporate settings, HMOs/health institutions, or academic settings. Examining the results of the survey can help establish programs of professional development that will enable women to practice in the environments that they find most suitable. In addition, an open and honest discussion of these issues can raise the sensitivity of the optometric community to these issues.
