Clinical and pathological characteristics of primary intraspinal hemangiopericytoma and choice of treatment

Background  Primary intraspinal hemangiopericytoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor with high rates of recurrence and metastasis. Surgery is the main therapeutic procedure for this lesion. This clinical research was undertaken to analyze the pathological characteristics, clinical course, and the choice of treatment for this lesion.
Methods  Twenty-three patients with primary intraspinal hemangiopericytomas were treated from 1987 to 2004. The clinical and imaging features, pathological findings, therapeutic procedures, and prognosis were analyzed retrospectively.
Results  Primary intraspinal hemangiopericytoma is more likely to attack middle-aged persons. The tumor mainly manifests as muscle weakness and sensor abnormalities. Microscopic examination showed slit-like vascular spaces and oral- or spindle-shaped cells with slightly acidic cytoplasm and oral nuclei. Tumors were subtotally resected in 11 patients, subtotally resected with postoperative radiotherapy in 4, totally resected in 5, and totally resected with postoperative radiotherapy in 3. Two patients were given spinal stabilization after total resection. Recurrence and metastatic rates were 50% and 0 in intradural patients. They were 73% and 27% in extradural patients, respectively.
Conclusions  The tumor should be resected en bloc with the neighboring dural mater to reduce recurrence and metastasis. Patients with subtotal resection need adjuvant radiotherapy. Patients with evident spinal involvement may benefit from spinal stabilization. The prognosis of the lesion arising from the dural mater is better.

     

Comparison of the effects of autotransfusion and homologous transfusion on milieu interieur and secretion of erythropoietin

Objective To compare the effects of autotransfusion and homologous transfusion on milieu interieur and secretion of erythropoietin (EPO). Methods Thirty patients aged 8-21 yr, undergoing surgical correction of kyphoscoliosis were randomly divided into two groups of fifteen:group A and group B. In group A patients received homologous transfusion during operation, while in group B shed blood was collected from operative field and after filtration RBCs were separated by a differential centrifugation and washed in normal saline and reinfused. Anesthesia was induced with fentanyl 2 μg· kg-1 ,propofol 1 mg·kg-1 and vecuronium 0.1 mg·kg-1 and maintained with inhalation of isoflurane and 50 % N2O in oxygen and intermittent iv boluses of vecuronium and fentanyl. Modulatory Effects of EPA and DHA on Proliferation and Apoptosis of Pancreatic Cancer Cells

In order to investigate the effects of eicosapentaenoic acid （EPA） and docosahexaenoic acid （DHA） on the proliferation, apoptosis of pancreatic cancer cell line SW1990 cells and the expression of cyclin E mRNA, the SW1990 cells were treated with different concentrations of EPA or DHA （20, 40, 60 μg/mL） for 0, 12, 24, 36 and 48 h respectively. By using MTF method, the inhibitory effects of EPA or DHA on the cell growth were assayed. Real time PCR was used to detect the expression changes of cyclin E mRNA after the SW1990 cells were treated with 40μg/mL EPA or DHA for different time. Flow cytometry was used to test the changes of apoptostic rate in the SW1990 cells treated with different concentrations of EPA or DHA for 24 h. The results showed that EPA and DHA could inhibit the growth of SW1990 cells in a time- and concentration-dependent manner （P〈0.01）. EPA or DHA could also significantly inhibit the expression of cyclin E mRNA in a time-dependent manner （P〈0.05）. EPA or DHA could induce the apoptosis of SW1990 cells in a concentration-dependent manner （P〈0.01）. It was concluded that ω-3 fatty acid could inhibit the proliferation of pancreatic cancer cell line SW1990 cells and promote their apoptosis. The down-regulation of the cyclin E expression by ω-3 fatty acid might be one of the mechanisms for its anti-tumor effect on pancreatic cancer.     

Characteristics and treatment of meningiomas in children-reports of 12 cases and literature review

Objective To study the characteristics and treatments of meningiomas in children. Methods 12 cases of meningiomas in children treated in Qilu hospital were analyzed retrospectively and the literature was reviewed. Resuits In this series of 12 cases, the ratio of boys and girls was 2 ： 1, the age ranged from 1.5 to 15 years （mean 11. 5 years）. Increased intracranial pressure was the most common symptoms and signs. The tumors were located in the convexity in 5, ventricles in 2, parasagittal, parafalcine and intraparenchymal regions in 1 respectively.

GC% of DNA of Pathogenic Cryptococcus and Varieties

The guanine and cytosine content of some pathogenic species and varieties of Cryptococcus was reported here as determined by a thermal denaturation technique. The results range from 47.82 to 61.98, which are similar to those in the literature. This study indicated that different species of Cryptococcus and different varieties of C. neoformans seem to be reflected in their G＋C mol% content values. Especially the differentiation of GC% of both C neoformans var. Shanghainess and C. neoformans var. gatti were over the range of variation that permitted in this species （1-4%）..The determination of G＋C mol% content can raise the level of taxonomy of Cryptococcus from morphology to nucleotide molecule, and the value is not affected by environment and etc. It is a standard of heredity for the classification and identification of fungi.

Duration of appearance of Vi antigen and Salmonella typhi in blood and urine of infected models.

Salmonella typhi (S typhi) infected models were established to evaluate the latex agglutination test (LAT) and staphylococcal coagglutination test (SCT) for the detection of S typhi Vi antigen in blood and urine. Antigens in serum or urine were detected within 7 days after infection with positive cultures, and decreased in 2 weeks. LAT and SCT were positive in 7 mice with no bacteria isolation from blood and urine but their spleen aspirates yielded S typhi. Both tests are rapid and sensitive and may be used for the diagnosis of typhoid infection, especially in partially treated patients when their blood cultures are negative.
