Motor and gestural skills of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), developmental coordination disorder (DCD), and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were investigated. A total of 49 children with ASD, 46 children with DCD, 38 children with DCD+ADHD, 27 children with ADHD, and 78 typically developing control children participated. Motor skills were assessed with the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency Short Form, and gestural skills were assessed using a test that required children to produce meaningful gestures to command and imitation. Children with ASD, DCD, and DCD+ADHD were significantly impaired on motor coordination skills; however, only children with ASD showed a generalized impairment in gestural performance. Examination of types of gestural errors revealed that children with ASD made significantly more incorrect action and orientation errors to command, and significantly more orientation and distortion errors to imitation than children with DCD, DCD+ADHD, ADHD, and typically developing control children. These findings suggest that gestural impairments displayed by the children with ASD were not solely attributable to deficits in motor coordination skills.  相似文献

Dyspraxia, a difficulty in executing an operationalised act, has been associated with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). However, issues relating to the area such as comparisons across modalities, comparisons of school vs. clinical populations, and developmental delay vs. pathology have not been addressed in the same, comprehensive study. In the current study, therefore, familiar gesture production in DCD was addressed in a comprehensive manner to follow-up outstanding issues from previous studies: The production of familiar gestures and praxis imagery in a school (n = 26) vs. clinic sample (n = 19) of children with DCD was examined in relation to typically developing age matched (n = 24) all aged from 9 to 11 years, and two groups of younger children within the age ranges of 5-6 (n = 23) and 4-5 (n = 26) years. Overall, children with Developmental Coordination Disorder showed an impaired ability to produce familiar gestures compared to their typical peers, and this was dependant on the type of gesture and presentation modality. Differences were found between school and clinic samples of children with DCD, suggestive of the recruitment of different underlying mechanisms in the two samples. The results have a bearing on our understanding of the relationship of developmental dyspraxia to DCD, as well as of the issue of developmental delay vs. pathology.  相似文献

Precision grip and concomitant anticipatory postural adjustments were investigated in 11 children (three females, eight males; mean age 9 years 1 month, SD 11 months) with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); 12 children (three females, nine males; mean age 9 years, SD 7 months) with developmental coordination disorder (DCD), and 13 children (two females, 11 males; mean age 9 years 9 months, SD 11 months) with a combination of ADHD and DCD (ADHD+). There were two comparison groups: an age-matched group (four females, 11 males; mean age 9 years 1 month, SD 14 months) and a younger age group (five females, six males; mean age 6 years 5 months, SD 8 months). Adaptation to different weights was evaluated by lifting a specialized grip instrument monitoring grip force, load force, and centre of foot pressure displacements. Children with ADHD+ showed: (1) excessive grip forces, (2) decreased amplitude and prolonged onset of postural adjustments, and (3) reduced ability to adapt the motor output. Children with ADHD and DCD did not scale manual and postural forces in amplitude and time domains. Children with DCD also differed in delayed timing of postural adjustments. Results indicate that children with ADHD and DCD show a spectrum of neural dysfunctions underlying poor motor coordination, which are not specific to the clinical disorder.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the high levels of comorbidity between attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD) may be attributed to a common underlying neurocognitive mechanism. This study assessed whether children with DCD and ADHD share deficits on tasks measuring working memory, set-shifting, and processing speed. A total of 195 children aged between 6 years 6 months and 14 years 1 month (mean 10y 4mo [SD 2y 2mo]) were included in this study. A control group (59 males, 79 females), a DCD group (12 males, six females), an ADHD-predominantly inattentive group (16 males, four females), and an ADHD-combined group (15 males, four females), were tested on three executive functioning tasks. Children with DCD were significantly slower on all tasks, supporting past evidence of a timing deficit in these children. With few exceptions, children with ADHD did not perform more poorly than control children. These findings demonstrate the importance of identifying children with motor deficits when examining tasks involving a timing component.  相似文献

This study investigated the functional performance of daily activities at home and at school in a population-based sample of children with different degrees of motor coordination impairment and competence. Sixteen children (seven males, nine females; mean age 8y, SD 9mo) with developmental coordination disorder (DCD), 25 with suspected DCD ([sDCD] 17 males, eight females; mean age 7y 6mo, SD 8mo), and 63 children without motor problems (39 males, 24 females; mean age 7y 9mo, SD 7mo) were recruited from public schools (Grades 1–3, age 6y 4mo–9y 10mo) using the Chinese version of the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire, the Movement Assessment Battery for Children, and the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency. Functional performance was assessed using the Chinese versions of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales and the School Function Assessment–Chinese version. The functional performance of children with DCD and sDCD was statistically significantly lower than those without DCD ( p's <0.05). χ2 and logistic regression analyses showed significant differences among all groups in the proportion of children scoring at the 'inadequate' adaptive level of home performance ( p's <0.05). There were also significant differences among the groups in the proportion of children scoring below the cut-off in school performance ( p's <0.05). The findings show the pervasive impact of DCD on children's functional performance in daily activities at home and at school.  相似文献

We present the neuropsychological and linguistic follow-up of a girl with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria during 4 years of gestural and verbal speech therapy. Some researchers have suggested that children with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria mentally fail to reach the syntactic phase and do not acquire a productive morphology. This patient achieved a mean length of utterance in signs/gestures of 3.4, a syntactic phase of completion of the nuclear sentence and the use of morphological modifications. We discuss the link between gesture and language and formulate hypotheses on the role of gestural input on the reorganization of compensatory synaptic circuits.  相似文献

Aim Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are known to participate in active play less than typically developing children. However, it is not known whether the activity deficit between children with and without DCD widens or diminishes over time. Method Data were obtained from a large, prospective cohort study of children (baseline n=2278, total n=2470). Motor coordination was assessed for 2083 students using the short form of the Bruininks–Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency. Participation in organized and free‐play activities was assessed using a participation questionnaire on five occasions over 3 years. Mixed‐effects modelling was used to examine differences in participation over time between children with probable DCD (pDCD, n=111, 46 males, 65 females) and their typically developing peers (n=1972, 1016 males, 956 females). The mean age for the whole sample was 9 years 11 months (SD 5mo) at assessment 1, 10 years 5 months (SD 5mo) at assessment 2, 10 years 11 months (SD 5mo) at assessment 3, 11 years 4 months (SD 4mo) at assessment 4, and 11 years 11 months (SD 4mo) at assessment 5. Results Children with pDCD reported less participation in organized and free‐play activities than their typically developing peers, and these differences persisted over time. Among males, the gap in participation in free‐play activities between those with DCD and typically developing children diminished substantially over time; among females, it increased slightly. Interpretation DCD is associated with a persistent activity deficit in children. Its effect on participation appears to be particularly serious among females but may diminish with time among males.  相似文献

Aim This study investigated the nature of coordination and control problems in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Method Seven adults (two males, five females, age range 20–28y; mean 23y, SD 2y 8mo) and eight children with DCD (six males, two females, age range 7–9y; mean 8y, SD 8mo), and 10 without DCD (seven males, three females, age range 7–9y; mean 8y, SD 7mo) sat in a swivel chair and looked at or pointed to targets. Optoelectronic apparatus recorded head, torso, and hand movements, and the spatial and temporal characteristics of the movements were computed. Results Head movement times were longer (p<0.05) in children with DCD than in the comparison group, even in the looking task, suggesting that these children experience problems at the lowest level of coordination (the coupling of synergistic muscle groups within a single degree of freedom). Increasing the task demands with the pointing condition affected the performance of children with DCD to a much greater extent than the other groups, most noticeably in key feedforward kinematic landmarks. Temporal coordination data indicated that all three groups attempted to produce similar movement patterns to each other, but that the children with DCD were much less successful than age‐matched children in the comparison group. Interpretation Children with DCD have difficulty coordinating and controlling single degree‐of‐freedom movements; this problem makes more complex tasks disproportionately difficult for them. Quantitative analysis of kinematics provides key insights into the nature of the problems faced by children with DCD.  相似文献

Physical activity (PA) is compromised in children and adolescents with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Approximately half of all children with DCD suffer from attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD); a cohort often considered more physically active than typically developing youth. Accelerometry is an effective method of assessing physical activity patterns; although estimates of PA in children with DCD using this quantifiable method have not been attempted. We hypothesize that children with co-morbid DCD/ADHD will be more physically active than children with DCD and healthy peers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to contrast physical activity (step count and activity energy expenditure using accelerometry [AEE]) between children with DCD, co-morbid DCD and ADHD (DCD/ADHD), and healthy controls. A sample of 110 children with DCD (N = 32), DCD/ADHD (N = 30) and controls (N = 48) age 12-13 years agreed to participate. Co-morbid DCD/ADHD was present in nearly half of the children with DCD (48.4%). Analysis of covariance demonstrated a positive interaction for females step count (F[1,92] = 4.92, p = 0.009). A significant group difference for step count (F[1,92] = 4.43, p = .04) was identified in females. Post hoc comparison tests identified significantly lower step count between males with DCD and controls (p = .004) and males with DCD/ADHD and controls (p = 0.003). Conversely, females with DCD/ADHD had significantly more step counts than their controls (p = .01). Hyperactivity in females with DCD/ADHD appears to contribute to more physical activity, whereas DCD may contribute to decreased activity in males with DCD and DCD/ADHD. Hyperactivity expressed among girls with DCD/ADHD appears to override the hypoactive behavior associated with females with DCD. Conversely, the expression of hyperactivity among boys with DCD/ADHD does not translate as hypothesized. The contrasting expression of physical activity (i.e., step count and AEE) evaluated using accelerometry in boys and girls with DCD, co-morbid DCD/ADHD and healthy peers are intriguing and constitute further investigation in a larger investigation.  相似文献

Many studies reported the presence of language impairments in children and adolescents with Klinefelter syndrome (KS). However, the first stage of their language development has been scarcely studied. The present study aimed to describe the spontaneous communicative production of 18-month-old children with KS, in comparison with that of typically developing (TD) male peers, aiming to verify the existence of different early communicative skills in both vocal and gestural modality and to identify the presence of possible associations with their later vocabulary size.

Children with KS showed a lower competence in both lexical skills and emergent syntactic abilities than TD peers. No significant differences were found in gesture production. Considering the possibility of identifying an association between early communicative skills and later vocabulary size, the vocal production of TD children appeared to be significantly related to their later lexical skills; whereas, the number of gestures produced by children with KS appeared to be related to their later lexical abilities. The early detection of language risk factors will allow early intervention and careful monitoring of these children’s communicative development.  相似文献

We assessed intelligence and receptive and expressive language skills in 6 children, ages 7 years 9 months to 12 years 4 months, with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria of variable extent and with dysarthria of different severity. In view of the recent findings of a close relationship between word and gesture, we also examined the communicative use of gesture. We found that mental retardation was related to the extent of cortical malformation; lexical comprehension, but not morphosyntactic comprehension, and verbal production were more compromised than expected from nonverbal intellectual abilities; lack of verbal language was not compensated by the use of referential gestures. Results are discussed suggesting that compromised verbal and gestural communication in bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria are not due simply to mental retardation and/or dysarthria but also to dysfunction of Sylvian fissure areas concerned with the totality of language processing.  相似文献

Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with asymmetric presentation and course characterized by degeneration of basal ganglia and cortical structures. Limb apraxia is a commonly observed deficit in CBS. Few studies have examined comprehensively the nature of deficits in limb apraxia. The goal of our study was to investigate the severity of deficits in various conceptual and gesture production task modalities. CBS patients were divided in two groups based on the side of brain that was initially affected by the disease. Ten patients with right hemisphere presentation (RHP) and seven with left hemisphere presentation (LHP) were included. The results showed that while selective conceptual tasks deficits were present in both groups, the overall picture suggests preserved conceptual representations of tools and actions in CBS patients with either LHP or RHP. Both groups were impaired relative to controls on gesture production tasks. Performance on transitive gestures was more severely affected in both groups than intransitive gestures. Imitation was more severely affected than pantomime, suggesting deficits in visuomotor transformations. The addition of verbal cuing during concurrent imitation affected only the LHP patients, rendering them more impaired relative to controls in their imitation with verbal cuing as opposed to their imitation only performance. Imitation of non-representational gestures was least accurate and intransitive gestures were most accurate. Patients were more severely impaired relative to controls when holding the object and when they were shown pictures of tools to pantomime.  相似文献

Strength, power, and coactivation levels were measured during knee extension and flexion tasks in 20 children (13 males, 7 females) with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and 20 age-matched control children (12 males, 8 females). Participants were classified according to results obtained on the McCarron Assessment of Neuromuscular Development, with each group including two age levels: 6 to 7 and 9 to 10 years. Tasks were performed on a Biodex dynamometer under isometric and isokinetic conditions with surface EMG recorded from the vastus lateralis and biceps femoris muscles. Significant effects of group and age were observed for the measures of peak torque (isometric and isokinetic) and power, with the decreased power in the group with DCD being more apparent at higher velocities. A lower flexor-extensor percentage was recorded for the group with DCD but only under isokinetic conditions. From a neuromuscular perspective, the group with DCD had increased levels of coactivation (RMS agonist:RMS antagonist) during the isometric flexion and isokinetic extension actions. Possible causes of the strength and power deficits observed in children with DCD are discussed.  相似文献

BackgroundDevelopmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a multifactorial, neurodevelopmental motor disorder that severely affects the activities of a child’s daily life and classroom performance. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of suspected DCD in a sample of Spanish schoolchildren and its association with socio-demographic factors.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study including a random sample of 460 children attending mainstream schools in northwest Spain in 2017. A Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire-European Spanish was used to evaluate suspected DCD prevalence. We performed multivariate logistic and linear regression analysis to determine the socio-demographic variables associated with suspected DCD and problematic motor coordination performance.ResultsThe prevalence of suspected DCD was 12.2%. According to the multivariate analysis, DCD symptoms were significantly associated with males (OR = 3.0), ages above 10 years old (OR = 5.0) and low participation in out-of-school physical activities (OR = 2.3). Preterm birth children were twice as likely to show suspected DCD, although this association was not statistically significant (OR = 2.1).ConclusionsA high percentage of Spanish schoolchildren are at risk for developing DCD. There is a strong connection between suspected DCD and socio-demographic factors. Protocols aimed to detect DCD and intervention programmes in classrooms designed to promote motor coordination skills need to take these factors into consideration.  相似文献

Although physical therapy (PT) is effective in improving motor function in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD), insufficient data are available on the impact of this intervention in children with combined attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and DCD. This prospective study aimed to establish the prevalence of DCD among a cohort of patients with ADHD, characterize the motor impairment, identify additional comorbidities, and determine the role of PT intervention on these patients. DCD was detected in 55.2% of 96 consecutive children with ADHD (81 males, 15 females), mostly among patients with the inattentive type (64.3% compared with 11% of those with the hyperactive/impulsive type, p<0.05). Mean age was 8 years 4 months (SD 2 y). Individuals with both ADHD and DCD more often had specific learning disabilities (p=0.05) and expressive language deficits (p=0.03) than children with ADHD only. Twenty-eight patients with ADHD and DCD randomly received either intensive group PT (group A, mean age 9 y 3 mo, SD 2 y 3 mo) or no intervention (group B, mean age 9 y 3 mo, SD 2 y 2 mo). PT significantly improved motor performance (assessed by the Movement Assessment Battery for Children; p=0.001). In conclusion, DCD is common in children with ADHD, particularly of the inattentive type. Patients with both ADHD and DCD are more likely to exhibit specific learning disabilities and phonological (pronunciation) deficits. Intensive PT intervention has a marked impact on the motor performance of these children.  相似文献

During language comprehension, listeners use the global semantic representation from previous sentence or discourse context to immediately integrate the meaning of each upcoming word into the unfolding message-level representation. Here we investigate whether communicative gestures that often spontaneously co-occur with speech are processed in a similar fashion and integrated to previous sentence context in the same way as lexical meaning. Event-related potentials were measured while subjects listened to spoken sentences with a critical verb (e.g., knock), which was accompanied by an iconic co-speech gesture (i.e., KNOCK). Verbal and/or gestural semantic content matched or mismatched the content of the preceding part of the sentence. Despite the difference in the modality and in the specificity of meaning conveyed by spoken words and gestures, the latency, amplitude, and topographical distribution of both word and gesture mismatches are found to be similar, indicating that the brain integrates both types of information simultaneously. This provides evidence for the claim that neural processing in language comprehension involves the simultaneous incorporation of information coming from a broader domain of cognition than only verbal semantics. The neural evidence for similar integration of information from speech and gesture emphasizes the tight interconnection between speech and co-speech gestures.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to determine the motor outcome of extremely-low-birthweight (ELBW; <1000g) or very preterm (<28wks) children compared with normal birthweight (NBW) children, to establish the perinatal associations of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and its cognitive and behavioural consequences. Participants were consecutive surviving ELBW or very preterm children and randomly selected NBW(>2499g) children born in the state of Victoria, Australia, in 1991 or 1992. Main outcomes were: (1) results of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC) at 8 years of age; (2) cognitive function; (3) academic progress; and (4) behaviour. Of 298 consecutive ELBW/very preterm survivors, 255 (85.6%; 117 males, 138 females) had the MABC at a mean age of 8 years 8 months. More ELBW/very preterm children (9.5%) had DCD than the NBW group (2%, p=0.001). Only male sex increased the likelihood of DCD in ELBW/very preterm children (p=0.017). ELBW/very preterm children with DCD had worse cognitive function and academic test scores (up to 1SD below those without DCD); they also had more adaptive behaviour and externalizing problems, but not internalizing problems. DCD is more common in ELBW/very preterm children, has few perinatal correlates, and is associated with poor cognitive and academic performance as well as increased behaviour problems.  相似文献

Aim We examined whether the behavioral impairments in finger torque control evident in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) follow a delayed or different developmental trajectory compared with their typically developing peers. Method Children with DCD (n=36; 18 males, 18 females; mean age 9y 7mo, SD 1y 8mo) and 36 typically developing children (15 males, 21 females; mean age 9y 7mo, SD 2y), between 6 years 10 months and 12 years 7 months of age were recruited from schools in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Particpants completed finger torque control and maximum finger torque production tasks. The inclusion criterion for children with DCD was a Movement Assessment Battery for Children score below the fifth centile. Group means and cross‐sectional age‐related landscapes of the two groups were compared. Results Children with DCD were more variable (p<0.001), less accurate (p=0.007), and less irregular (p<0.001), on average, in their finger torque control than their typically developing peers, despite producing nearly equivalent levels of maximum torque (p=0.49). Despite these mean differences, the cross‐sectional age‐related changes in torque control were similar in the two groups (all p>0.05). Interpretation The developmental trajectory of finger torque control in children with DCD, compared with typically developing children, is delayed. This suggests the behavioral deficits in finger torque control in children with DCD persist as a function of age, rather than progressing or resolving.  相似文献

Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) occurs in a small but significant proportion of children who present with impaired body-eye coordination and show poor acquisition of motor skills. This study investigated the visual-proprioceptive mapping ability of children with DCD from a small selected group, with particular reference to the use of vision in matching tasks. The children with DCD in this study were significantly poorer than control children on all matching tasks. They seemed to have particular difficulty in cross-modal judgements that required the use of visual information to guide proprioceptive judgements of limb position. A distinction is drawn between tasks that can be achieved purely through sensory matching and those that require body-centred spatial judgements, suggesting that it is the latter that posits a particular difficulty for children with DCD.  相似文献

Aim Postural control is a fundamental component of action in which deficits have been shown to contribute to motor difficulties in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The purpose of this study was to examine anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) in children with DCD in a bimanual load‐lifting task. Method Sixteen children with reported motor problems (two females, 14 males; mean age 9y; SD 2y) and 16 typically developing, age‐matched children (six females, 10 males; mean age 9y; SD 2y) took part in the study. The task required the children to maintain a stable elbow angle, despite imposed or voluntary unloading of the forearm. APAs were assessed using electromyography and kinematics analysis. Results Although children with DCD could compensate for the consequences of unloading, the results demonstrated that APAs were less efficient in children with DCD than in typically developing children. A positive and significant coefficient of regression between the flexor inhibition latency and the postural stabilization was only found in typically developing children. Interpretation The impaired fine‐tuning of the muscle contribution and the poor stabilization performances demonstrate poor predictive modelling in DCD.  相似文献
