Objective

To compare the therapeutic effects between the Governor Vessel-regulating, liver-soothing and mind-calming needling and the routine acupuncture therapy for insomnia due to liver fire disturbing the heart.

Methods

A total of 50 cases with insomnia were randomly divided by the random numberl table into the two groups, 25 cases in each group. The observation group was treated with the Governor Vessel-regulating, liver-soothing and mind-calming needling, while the control group was treated with the routine acupuncture therapy. The two groups were treated for five sessions per week, ten sessions as a course. After 3-course treatment, the therapeutic effects and the improvement of Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) were observed.

Results

After treatment for three courses, the total effective rate was 100% in the treatment group and 92% in the control group. The difference in the therapeutic effect between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). After the treatment, the sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, subjective sleep quality, sleeping disturbances, daytime dysfunction, and total PSQI scores in the patients of the two groups were obviously improved in comparing those before treatment, with significant differences (all P<0.01). After treatment, the inter-group differences in the sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, subjective sleep quality, and total PSQI scores were statistically significant (all P<0.01); the differences in the scores of sleeping disturbances and daytime dysfunction is not statistical significant (all P>0.05).

Conclusion

The therapeutic effect of Governor Vessel-regulating, liver-soothing and mind-calming needling is better for insomnia due to liver fire disturbing the heart than the routine acupuncture therapy.

Objective

To observe the clinical effect of Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture on post-stroke depression.

Methods

A total of 70 eligible cases were randomly allocated into an observation group and a control group according to the random number table. Patients in the observation group were treated with Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture, whereas patients in the control group were treated with oral Escitalopram Oxalate tablet. The treatment lasted for 8 weeks. The Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), Montgomery Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS), and Barthel Index (BI) were used to evaluate the patients’ condition before, 4 weeks and 8 weeks after treatment respectively. In addition, adverse reactions were also recorded.

Results

After 4 weeks of treatment, the HAMD and MADRS scores were significantly decreased in both groups (P<0.05); and the BI scores were significantly increased in both groups (P<0.05). There was no between-group statistical difference in HAMD score (P>0.05); the MADRS score in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05) and the BI score in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). After 8 weeks of treatment, there were no between-group statistical differences in all aspects (P>0.05); however, the adverse reactions in the observation group were significantly less than those in the control group.

Conclusion

The Governor Vessel-regulating and brain-unblocking acupuncture is safe and effective for post-stroke depression and can obtain similar efficacy as Escitalopram Oxalate tablet. In addition, it can fast alleviate core symptoms of depression and improve the activities of daily living (ADL) and has fewer adverse reactions.

Objective

To observe the efficacy of acupuncture at points of Shaoyang meridians plus moving cupping on neck and shoulder for migraine.

Methods

A total of 64 migraine cases were randomly allocated into an observation group and a control group, 32 cases in each group. Random number table method was used in allocation. Acupuncture at points of Shaoyang meridians and cupping on neck and shoulder were used for cases in the observation group, which contain acupuncture 5 times a week and cupping once a week. Oral flunarizine hydrochloride capsules were used for cases in the control group, 10 mg for each dose, 1 dose a day. 2 weeks constitutes a course of treatment. The patients were treated for two courses of treatment in both groups. After that, the changes of visual analogue scale (VAS) and the migraine disability assessment questionnaire (MIDAS) were observed, as well as the clinical efficacy.

Results

The total effective rate and recovery and marked effective rate in the observation group were 93.8% and 71.0% respectively, versus 78.1% and 43.8% in the control group, showing statistical significant differences (both P<0.05). There were significant decreases in VAS and MIDAS scores after treatments in both groups (both P<0.05). VAS and MIDAS scores in the observation group were significantly different from those in the control group (both P<0.05).

Conclusion

Combining acupuncture at points of Shaoyang meridians and cupping on neck and shoulder can relieve headache and reduce influence of migraine on life. It can produce a better efficacy than oral flunarizine hydrochloride capsules in treating migraine patients.
