STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence and correlates of habitual snoring in senior high school students in Korea. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Ten high schools in the southern part of Seoul, Korea. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 3,871 high school students (2,703 male students and 1,168 female students; age range, 15 to 18 years; mean age: male students, 16.8 years; female students, 16.9 years) who were attending the 11th grade. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, school performance, and patterns of sleep and sleep-related disturbances. The overall prevalence of habitual snoring was 11.2% (boys, 12.4%; girls, 8.5%). The mean total sleep time was similar in habitual snorers vs nonsnorers (6.4 and 6.3 h per day, respectively). Frequency of snoring increased significantly with body mass index (BMI) [p < 0.001], cigarette smoking (p < 0.01), prevalence of witnessed apnea (p < 0.001), and Epworth sleepiness scale score (p < 0.001). The frequency of snoring increased with a decline in school performance (p < 0.001). For those whose school performance was low, there was a 35% excess in the odds of habitual snoring vs those whose school performance was high (odds ratio, 1.35; 95% confidence interval, 1.01 to 1.78). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that chronic habitual snoring is associated with multiple factors in adolescents. Whether interventions to modify BMI and smoking can alter snoring habits and related clinical problems warrants further study, particularly as it also may improve academic performance in high school students. 相似文献

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome affects 0.7-3% of children and snoring is an important symptom. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of habitual snoring and sleep-disordered breathing in primary school students in Afyonkarahisar city. There are 41 primary schools in ü? education regions in Afyonkarahisar city. One school from each region was randomly selected and all the students in that school were given a questionnaire. Of the 1100 given questionnaires 786 (71.5%) were filled in adequately and were accepted for evaluation. Of the students 407 (51.8%) were girls and 379 (48.2%) were boys. Mean age was 9.9 +/- 2.0 (7-15). The prevalence of habitual snoring was found as 4.8%. With regard to gender, occasional snoring and habitual snoring was significantly more prevalent than never snoring in boys. The prevalence of sleep disordered breathing symptoms was found to be significantly higher in habitual snorers. Maternal and paternal smoking frequency and passive smoke exposure was more common in habitual snorers but there were no significant differences among the groups. Hyperactivity symptoms were significantly higher in habitual snorers. In our study, school performance was found to be 10.9 folds lower in habitual snorers than non-snorers. We think that questioning the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome symptoms in children and performing diagnostic procedures and treatment when suspected will decrease the morbidity. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Most studies on habitual snoring have focused on its prevalence. However, from the clinical point of view, the intensity of snoring is of upmost importance, as it suggests the existence of sleep apnoeas. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of loud snoring using a standard questionnaire and to evaluate the anthropometric and sleep characteristic differences between loud and light snorers in a sample of middle-aged males. METHODS: The subjects were middle-aged active male employees. They completed a structured sleep questionnaire and had standard anthropometric measurements. Subjects reporting habitual snoring (> or =3 nights/week) were further classified as loud or light snorers. RESULTS: Of the 850 male subjects volunteering, 149 (17.5%) were habitual loud snorers. Loud snorers were older and had a greater waist-to-hip ratio as compared with light snorers. In univariate analysis, loud snoring was associated with gasping/snorting during sleep, breathing stops during sleep, waking up too early, excessive daytime sleepiness and falling asleep while watching TV. Logistic regression identified four independent associates of loud snoring: gasping during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, falling asleep watching TV and age. CONCLUSIONS: Loud snoring is present in a significant proportion of middle-aged men and is associated with central obesity and age. It disturbs sleep and elicits significant daytime sleepiness. Its association with breathing pauses (univariate) and its independent association with gasping during sleep suggests that loud snoring could be considered a clinical correlate of obstructive sleep apnoeas. 相似文献

Prevalence of dyslipidaemias in a representative sample of the French population Hypercholesterolaemia is a major factor of risk of coronary atherosclerosis. The prevalence of other types of dyslipidaemia in the general population remains poorly defined. This study was performed to measure the prevalence of various dyslipidaemias in the French population. A representative sample of 3508 men and women between the ages of 35 and 64 years was recruited by the "Multinational MONItoring of trends and determinants in CArdiovascular disease" centres of Lille, Strasbourg and Toulouse. We excluded 162 patients suffering from known cardiovascular disorders, and 409 individuals treated with lipid-lowering drugs. The prevalence of pure hypercholesterolaemia, defined as a total cholesterol concentration >6.2 mmol/l (2.4 g/l) and triglyceride concentration <2.3 mmol/l (2 g/l), was 30% (29-32%). The prevalence of HDL cholesterol concentration <1 mmol/l (0.4 g/l) in men, or <1.3 mmol/l (0.5 g/l) in women, was 12% (11-13%). The prevalence of mixed hyperlipidaemia, defined as a total cholesterol concentration >6.2 mmol/l (2.4 g/l) and triglyceride concentration >2.3 mmol/l (2 g/l) was 5% (4-6%). The prevalence of hypertriglyceridaemia, defined as a total cholesterol concentration <6.2 mmol/l (2.4 g/l) and triglyceride concentration >2.3 mmol/l (2 g/l) was 4% (3-5%). Low HDL cholesterol concentrations were associated with smoking, obesity, and absence of either regular physical exercise or alcohol consumption. This study confirmed the high prevalence of pure hypercholesterolaemia, and revealed an important prevalence of low HDL cholesterol concentration, which represents a major cardiovascular risk factor. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate whether injections of botulinum toxin into the soft palate reduce snoring in a subgroup of patients that present an active process causing habitual snoring. The study was conducted in eight patients with habitual snoring but without evidence of obstructive sleep apnea. Polysomnography was performed for diagnostic purposes and to monitor sleep quality before and after treatment. The patients and their partners completed a questionnaire before and after treatment. Recordings of snoring noise before and after treatment were evaluated on a visual analog scale by a blinded assessor. Doses of 20 U of botulinum toxin type A (Dysport®) were injected unilaterally into the muscles of the soft palate. Snoring was reduced in eight cases. The patients reported no major adverse effects. These results justify further studies of botulinum toxin therapy in patients with habitual snoring. The scheme presented for injections of botulinum toxin into the levator veli palatini muscle provides a rational basis for the design of such studies. Therapy with botulinum toxin for habitual snoring is safe, non-invasive, easy to perform, fully reversible, and thus warrants investigation under placebo-controlled, double-blind conditions. This treatment is appropriate for a disorder that is of paramount social importance but does not pose a medical threat to the individuals affected. 相似文献

Habitual snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea in children, which are frequently associated with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, may begin early in life and in relation with orocraniofacial features. The aim of this study was to detect the presence of early bone craniofacial modifications in young children with a long history of habitual snoring. Twenty-six habitually snoring children (mean age 4.6 yrs) were studied by nocturnal portable recording or diurnal polysomnography, cephalometry and orthodontic evaluation. A comparison of cephalometric findings was made between the studied group and 26 age-matched children (mean age 5.1 yrs) with no history of snoring or respiratory problems during sleep. The cephalometric analyses showed a significant increase in craniomandibular intermaxillar, lower and upper goniac angles with a retroposition and posterior rotation of the mandible (high angle face) and a reduction in the rhinopharynx space caused by higher thickness of adenoids in habitually snoring children compared with controls. Cross-bites and labial incompetence as well as daytime symptoms and familiarity for habitual snoring were found in most of the studied group of snorers compared with controls. The results indicate that upper airway obstruction during sleep is associated with mild but significant cephalometric and craniofacial modifications in children complaining of habitual snoring. Whether this skeletal conformation is genetically determined or influenced by the early onset of habitual snoring remains to be assessed. 相似文献

Snoring can occur alone or it may be the presenting feature of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and other common chronic conditions. In our study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence and correlates of snoring in adolescent students in Tehran, Iran. A cross-sectional study was designed and students were selected from 20 secondary and high schools, in 5 different zones in Tehran in order to have a representative sample of the adolescent population. A total of 2900 students (1200 male and 1700 female students) 11-17 year-old who were attending secondary and high schools were investigated. Information was collected via a structured face-to-face interview, based on a questionnaire. In addition to snoring, nocturnal cough, asthma-related symptoms, and daytime symptoms were also questioned. BMI was measured by two trained physicians. The prevalence of snoring was 7.9% (4.8% in girls and 12.4% in boys). The prevalence of snoring was significantly higher among males (P< 0.05). Snoring was positively associated with asthma and nocturnal cough. Overweight/obese adolescents had significantly higher rates of snoring and asthma symptoms. Prevalence of daytime symptoms increased significantly in the snoring group. These results suggest that snoring is associated with multiple factors in adolescents. We conclude that the prevalence of snoring is relatively high in children of this region. This highlights the need for awareness among physicians about the problem of sleep-disordered breathing, especially in children with asthma and obesity, and also the need for further studies to measure the prevalence of sleep breathing disorders among Iranians. 相似文献

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of snoring and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in young adults in Southeast Asian countries is unknown. We aim to determine the symptoms and prevalence of SDB in a university student population using a questionnaire survey followed by home sleep monitoring. METHODS: The Sleep and Health Questionnaire (a modified version of the Specialized Centers of Research Sleep Questionnaire, translated into Chinese) was distributed to all first-year students (1,306 male and 1,757 female) enrolled in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Subsequently, those students who returned the questionnaires were randomly chosen to undergo portable home sleep monitoring using the MESAM IV device (Madaus Medizin-Elektronik; Freiburg, Germany). RESULTS: A total of 1,910 replies were obtained from 3,063 questionnaires sent by mail (response rate, 62.4%). The female to male ratio was 1.8:1, with mean age of 19.4 years (SD, 1.3 years) and mean body mass index (BMI) of 20.0 (SD, 2.5). Overall, 25.7% of subjects reported snoring; 10.7% and 42.1% reported impaired performance ability and daytime sleepiness, respectively. Of the 88 subjects who underwent overnight sleep monitoring, 66 subjects (75%) were snorers and 8 subjects (9%) snored > 10% of the night. Male subjects had a higher BMI (p < 0.001) and tended to snore more often than female subjects (p = 0.06). Subjects with an oxygen desaturation index (ODI) > or = 3 had a BMI > 22 (p < 0.05). On sleep study, nine subjects (10.2%) and two subjects (2.3%) had a respiratory disturbance index (RDI) > or = 3 and an RDI > or = 5, respectively, associated with self-reported sleepiness, giving a minimum estimated prevalence of SDB as 0.1% (RDI > or = 5) in the study population. There was no correlation between recorded snoring with either RDI or self-reported sleepiness. Questionnaire responses, neck circumference, and alcohol consumption did not predict the occurrence of SDB. CONCLUSION: Snoring was prevalent, while SDB was uncommon in this student population. However, snoring and self-reported symptoms by questionnaire were poor predictors for SDB. Male gender showed a trend as an independent predictor for snoring, but not for SDB. 相似文献

A stratified random sample of a large state (Michigan) was studied by respiratory questionnaire, medical history, and physical examination. Data were obtained on 1,169 white adults. The prevalence of chronic bronchitis and chronic wheezing varied with sex (greater in men) and smoking history (greatest in current smokers). The prevalence of chronic bronchitis varied depending on whether it was (1) defined simply as chronic production of sputum, (2) diagnosed by the examining physician, or (3) previously diagnosed by a physician. Dyspnea was more common in women; in men, it was least common in nonsmokers but was of similar prevalence in ex-smokers and current smokers. Angina was more commonly reported by women, but previously diagnosed heart attack was consistently more common in men. Wheezing was by far the most common physical sign, present in 5.1 percent of the total population and 9.2 percent of male current smokers. Clubbing and rales were each noted in 1.2 percent of the total population. The prevalences of clinical findings in this cross section of a large state should be useful for comparison with other populations. 相似文献

Higher or similar systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure has been recorded in children with sleep apnea compared to subjects with primary snoring or in those with primary snoring compared to controls. To investigate the association between blood pressure and habitual snoring, we studied children in four randomly selected schools in central Greece. A symptom questionnaire was answered by parents, and children's weight, height, and blood pressure were measured. Seven hundred and sixty children (4-14 years old; 352 female) were recruited. Fifty of 760 (6.6%) participants were snoring more than 3 nights/week (habitual snorers). Mean (+/- SD) systolic blood pressure was 106.9 (+/-10.6) mmHg in habitual snorers vs. 107 (+/- 12) in nonhabitual snorers (P > 0.05). Mean diastolic blood pressure was 61.9 (+/- 7.6) in the former vs. 61.8 (+/- 6.8) in the latter (P > 0.05). While age, gender, and body mass index were significant predictors of systolic blood pressure in a general linear model, snoring was not. Similarly, that gender and body mass index but not snoring were significant predictors of diastolic blood pressure. In a community sample of children, habitual snorers do not have higher morning systolic or diastolic blood pressure than nonhabitual snorers. 相似文献

AIMS: To examine the association between habitual snoring and components of the metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. Whether these associations are independent of obesity was also explored. METHODS: Four thousand five hundred and six men and 5041 women aged 40-69 years from the Korean Health and Genome Study were examined. Information of snoring frequency was obtained by a questionnaire and components of the metabolic syndrome were measured. RESULTS: There was a clear dose-response relationship between the increasing frequency of snoring and the higher prevalence of each component of the metabolic syndrome (P<0.001). After adjustment for age, abdominal obesity, and the other metabolic components, hypertension was significantly associated with a 1.2-fold excess of habitual snoring in both men (P<0.05) and women (P<0.05). The association of habitual snoring with hypertension was unaltered by obesity. Regardless of the presence or absence of abdominal obesity, there was an increase in the prevalence of habitual snoring as the number of metabolic abnormalities increased. CONCLUSIONS: Habitual snoring is associated with hypertension independent of obesity. While the relationship between habitual snoring and obesity is well recognized, characterization of the role of the other components of the metabolic syndrome as a cause or result of habitual snoring warrants a further study. 相似文献

To establish whether snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), the main symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, influence the risk of occupational accidents a population-based, prospective study was performed. In 1984, 2,874 men aged 30-64 answered questions on snoring and EDS. Ten years later 2,009 (73.8% of the survivors) responded to a follow-up questionnaire including work-related questions and potential confounders. Information on occupational accidents during 1985-1994 was obtained from national register data. A total of 345 occupational accidents were reported by 247 of the men (12.3%). Multivariate analysis revealed that men who reported both snoring and EDS at baseline were at an increased risk of occupational accidents during the following 10 yr, with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.2 (95% CI 1.3-3.8) after adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking, alcohol dependence, years at work, blue-collar job, shift work, and exposure to noise, organic solvents, exhaust fumes, and whole-body vibrations. However, no significant increased risk was found for snorers without EDS or nonsnorers with EDS. We conclude that sleepy, male snorers have an increased risk of occupational accidents. The results indicate that early identification and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing may reduce the number of injuries at work. 相似文献

Habitual snoring is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and metabolic abnormalities such as impaired glucose homeostasis. Many studies were performed in obese Western populations. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of habitual snoring with glucose and insulin metabolism in nonobese Korean men who were free of diabetes and hypertension. A total of 2,719 men ages 40-69 years from the Korean Health and Genome Study participated in this study. Information of snoring frequency was obtained by a questionnaire and glucose and insulin levels during oral glucose tolerance test were measured. Repeated measures analysis of variance detected significant differences in the changing patterns of glucose and insulin levels at 1 hour and 2 hours between habitual snorers and nonhabitual snorers, whereas there were no significant differences in fasting blood glucose and insulin levels. Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that habitual snoring was independently associated with elevated 1-hour and 2-hour glucose levels and a 2-hour insulin level, respectively. The present data suggest that habitual snoring may affect glucose-insulin metabolism, independent of diabetes and hypertension, even in nonobese Korean middle-age men. Further prospective studies are needed to examine the causal relationship between habitual snoring and insulin resistance or glucose intolerance. 相似文献

INTRODUCTION: There is scant data on the risk factors of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in the general population in Asian countries. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of a random population sample of 2298 adults aged 20-75 years, stratified by gender, ethnicity (Chinese, Malay and Indian) and age. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to elicit responses to questions on daytime somnolence and nocturnal events. Three categories of SDB were defined for analysis: habitual snoring; apnoeic snoring (SDB I); and apnoeic snoring or snoring with diurnal hypersomnia (SDB II). RESULTS: Snoring was reported by 201 persons (6.8%), SDB-I in 44 (1.9%) and SDB-II in 112 (4.9%) in the sample. The adjusted odds ratio (95% C.I.) of association with snoring were: male gender, 3.79 (2.69-5.33); older age (>60 years old), 2.15 (1.41-3.29); Indian versus Chinese, 1.54 (1.05-2.25); family history, 2.21 (1.56-3.12); obesity (BMI>30), 2.64 (1.62-4.30); neck circumference (>40 cm), 2.57 (1.59-4.11); and cigarette smoking, 2.05 (1.21-3.45). The risk factors for SDB were similar to that of snoring. CONCLUSION: Population risk factors associated with habitual snoring and SDB in Singapore are largely similar to those reported in other populations. Differential risks underscore the importance of ethnicity in determining the burden of SDB. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of positive trauma histories in a community sample of intravenous drug using (IVDU) women for five subsets of childhood trauma (emotional abuse or neglect, physical abuse or neglect, and sexual abuse) and to compare demographic variables between the abused versus nonabused groups. Of the 181 women who completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), 109 (60.2%) were sexually abused, 100 (55.2%) were physically abused, 83 (45.9%) were emotionally abused, 151 (83.4%) were emotionally neglected, and 108 (59.7%) were physically neglected. There were no statistically significant findings for age, ethnicity, and educational level. Those subjects that were physically neglected were more likely not to be in a current relationship compared to those subjects that were not abused (p = .036). The findings suggest that the prevalence of all five childhood traumas was higher than what has been reported in the general population, and that physical neglect of individuals may predict lack of current significant relationships. 相似文献

French Guiana, a French overseas department in South America, has been classified epidemic for HIV. This territory is consisting of a very young population with almost 45% of them being younger than 20 years of age. Delaying the onset of first sexual intercourse (SI) is one of the major objectives to fight HIV infection in adolescents. The objective of this study is to identify the age of first SI and the risk factors of early onset. A behavioural surveillance survey among students living on the coastline and alongside the Maroni River was conducted in 2011/2012. A total of 1603 students filled out the survey. While 60% had already SI, the mean age of first intercourse was 12.1 years for boys and 13.9 years for girls. Accordingly, over 90% had a premature onset of SI. Risk factors are age, male gender, living alongside the Maroni River, another language than the French being mother tongue, not being religious, alcohol and cannabis consumption and a bad attitude towards condom use. Risk factors for girls are an older first sexual partner, having more than three lifetime sexual partners and condom rupture. Evidence-based implementation with respect of local and socio-demographic aspects is necessary to improve youths’ appreciation of SI and related risk of sexual transmitted diseases. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The aim of this longitudinal study was to identify body size, behavioral, and respiratory risk factors for the development of habitual snoring in a general adult population. METHODS: The sample for this study comprised 967 adults aged 25 to 74 years who reported not snoring in the 1981 Busselton Health Survey and who also attended the 1994-1995 follow-up survey. Logistic regression was used to identify and quantify the effect of baseline and change risk factors for the development of habitual snoring. RESULTS: A total of 13% had become habitual snorers by 1994-1995. Male gender (odds ratio [OR], 3.5) and baseline body mass index (OR, 1.4 per 3.4 kg/m(2)) were significant predictors of habitual snoring; after accounting for these variables, no other baseline body size, behavioral, or respiratory/allergy variables were significantly related to the development of habitual snoring. However, change in body mass index over the 14-year follow-up period (OR, 1.55 per 2.3 kg/m(2)), development of asthma (OR, 2.8), and commencement of smoking (OR, 2.2) were additional significant independent risk factors for development of habitual snoring. CONCLUSIONS: This study has confirmed male gender, obesity, and weight gain as key determinants of habitual snoring, and has indicated that development of asthma and taking up smoking also play a role. Maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking are recommended lifestyle preventive strategies to reduce the risk of sleep-disordered breathing and its sequelae. 相似文献
