Waste tyre-derived products (TDP) are used in some engineering applications and thereby reduce the potential impact on the environment, for example, as lightweight materials in geotechnical engineering projects. One of TDPs is the baling of whole waste tyres to produce rectilinear, lightweight, permeable bales of high bale-to-bale or bale-to-soil friction. The use of lightweight tyre bales in road construction has the potential to satisfy the demand for low-cost materials exhibiting such a beneficial property. This paper presents a laboratory study on the mechanical properties of tyre bales. The laboratory tests included measurement and evaluation of full-scale tyre bales to determine basic values for the geometry and unit weight, compressibility characteristics of tyre bales, including Young’s modulus and Poisson ratio, shear strength along the tyre–tyre and tyre–soil surfaces, creep and stiffness degradation under cyclic load. The respective test procedures and results of these tests are presented in the paper. The paper provides the mechanical properties of tyre bales required for geotechnical projects, as follows: the unit weight—0.515 Mg/m3, the Young’s modulus—826 kPa, the Poison’s ratio—0.11, the dry tyre–tyre interface: cohesion of 0.03 kPa and friction angle of 46.0°, the wet tyre–soil interface: cohesion 0.77 kPa and a friction angle of 29.6°, creep deformation of 6.1% of the average height of the bale, and no stiffness degradation of tyre bales under cyclic load. These results could be directly applied for the designing and construction of the tyre-baled structures.  相似文献

The paper deals with buckling and strength analysis of suspension system rods made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate. The whole suspension system of urban solar vehicle, Eagle Two, designed by Lodz University of Technology students was considered. The calculations and analysis focused on suspension rods, where the traditional metal material was replaced with CFRP laminate. The influence of layer arrangement on rod strength, static, and dynamic buckling were analysed. The research was conducted using numerical simulations employing finite element method software. The static and dynamic load was considered. The obtained results show that the plies’ order in the laminate influences both the strength and stiffness of the considered rod. The best results considering both failure force and longitudinal elasticity modulus were obtained for the stacking sequences with axially oriented (0°) plies on the outside of the rod.  相似文献

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is rapidly evolving due to its unlimited design freedom to fabricate complex and intricate light-weight geometries with the use of lattice structure that have potential applications including construction, aerospace and biomedical applications, where mechanical properties are the prime focus. Buckling instability in lattice structures is one of the main failure mechanisms that can lead to major failure in structural applications that are subjected to compressive loads, but it has yet to be fully explored. This study aims to investigate the effect of surface-based lattice structure topologies and structured column height on the critical buckling load of lattice structured columns. Four different triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattice topologies were selected and three design configurations (unit cells in x, y, z axis), i.e., 2 × 2 × 4, 2 × 2 × 8 and 2 × 2 × 16 column, for each structure were designed followed by printing using HP MultiJet fusion. Uni-axial compression testing was performed to study the variation in critical buckling load due to change in unit cell topology and column height. The results revealed that the structured column possessing Diamond structures shows the highest critical buckling load followed by Neovius and Gyroid structures, whereas the Schwarz-P unit cell showed least resistance to buckling among the unit cells analyzed in this study. In addition to that, the Diamond design showed a uniform decrease in critical buckling load with a column height maximum of 5193 N, which makes it better for applications in which the column’s height is relatively higher while the Schwarz-P design showed advantages for low height column maximum of 2271 N. Overall, the variations of unit cell morphologies greatly affect the critical buckling load and permits the researchers to select different lattice structures for various applications as per load/stiffness requirement with different height and dimensions. Experimental results were validated by finite element analysis (FEA), which showed same patterns of buckling while the numerical values of critical buckling load show the variation to be up to 10%.  相似文献

The study analyzes the anisotropy effect for ceramic masonry based on experimental tests of samples made of 25 × 12 × 6.5 cm3 solid brick elements with compressive strength fb = 44.1 MPa and cement mortar with compressive strength fm = 10.9 MPa. The samples were loaded in a single plane with a joint angle that varied from the horizontal plane. The load was applied in a vertical direction. The samples were loaded at angles of 90°, 67.5°, 45°, 22.5°, and 0° toward the bed joints. The most unfavourable cases were determined. It was observed that the anisotropy of the masonry significantly influences the load-bearing capacity of the walls depending on the angle of the compressive stresses trajectory. Approximation curves and equations for compressive strength, Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s coefficient were proposed. It was observed that Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio will also change depending on the trajectory of compressive stresses as a function of the joint angle. Experimental tests allowed to determine the failure mechanism in prepared specimens. The study allowed to estimate the masonry strength with the load acting at different angles toward the bed joints.  相似文献

The effect of the thermal properties of aggregates on the mechanical properties of high-strength concrete was evaluated under loading and high-temperature conditions. For the concrete, granite was selected as a natural aggregate, and ash-clay and clay as lightweight aggregates. The mechanical properties of the concrete (stress–strain, compressive strength, elastic modulus, thermal strain, and transient creep) were evaluated experimentally under uniform heating from 20 to 700 °C while maintaining the load at 0, 20, and 40% of the compressive strength at room temperature. Experimental results showed that the concrete containing lightweight aggregates had better mechanical properties, such as compressive strength and elastic modulus, than that of the concrete with a granite aggregate at high temperature. In particular, the concrete containing lightweight aggregates exhibited high compressive strength (60–80% of that at room temperature) even at 700 °C. Moreover, the concrete containing granite exhibited a higher thermal strain than that containing lightweight aggregates. The influence of the binding force under loaded conditions, however, was found to be larger for the latter type. The transient creep caused by the loading was constant regardless of the aggregate type below 500 °C but increased more rapidly when the coefficient of the thermal expansion of the aggregate was above 500 °C.  相似文献

Renovation, restoration, remodeling, refurbishment, and the retrofitting of buildings often imply applying forces (i.e., concentrated loads) to beams that before were subjected to distributed loads only. In the case of reinforced concrete structures, the new condition causes a beam to bear a concentrated load with the crack pattern that resulted from the distributed loads which had acted before. If the concentrated load is applied at or near the beam’s midspan, the new shear demand reaches the maximum where cracks are vertical or quasi-vertical, and where inclined bars are not common according to any standards. So, the actual shear capacity can be substantially lower than new shear demand due to the concentrated load. This paper focuses on reinforced concrete beams whose load distribution has to be changed from distributed to concentrated and presents a design method to bring the beam’s shear capacity up to the new demand. The method consists of applying fiber composites (fiber-reinforced polymers or fiber-reinforced cementitious material) with fibers at an angle of 45° bonded to the beam’s web. This kind of external reinforcement arrangement has to comply with some practical measures, which are presented as well. The paper also provides the analytical model that predicts the concentrated load-carrying capacity of a beam in the strengthened state. The model accounts for the crack’s verticality, which nullifies the contributions of steel stirrups, aggregate interlock, and dowel action, and for the effective bond length of each fiber, which depends on the distance between the ends of the fiber and the crack it crosses.  相似文献

This paper presents the static mechanical behavior and the dynamic thermomechanical properties of four market-available reinforced and non-reinforced thermoplastics and photopolymer materials used as precursors in different additive manufacturing technologies. This article proposes a characterization approach to further address development of aeronautic secondary structures via 3D-printed composite materials replacing conventional manufactured carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Different 3D printing materials, technologies, printing directions, and parameters were investigated. Experimental results showed that carbon-reinforced ONYX_R material exhibits a transition point at 114 °C, a 600 MPa tensile strength, and an average tensile strain of 2.5%, comparable with conventional CFRP composites manufactured via autoclave, making it a suitable candidate for replacing CFRP composites, in the aim of taking advantage of 3D printing technologies. ONYX material exhibits higher stiffness than Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene Copolymer (ABS), or conventional Nylon 6/6 polyamide, the flexural modulus being 2.5 GPa; nevertheless, the 27 °C determined transition temperature limits its stability at higher temperature. Daylight High Tensile (further called HTS) resin exhibits a tensile strength and strain increase when shifting the printing direction from transversal to longitudinal, while no effect was observed in HighTemp DL400 resin (further called HTP).  相似文献

There is increased interest in applying electromagnetic (EM) shielding to prevent EM interference, which destroys electronic circuits. The EM shielding’s performance is closely related to the electrical conductivity and can be improved by incorporating conductive materials. The weight of a structure can be reduced by incorporating lightweight aggregates and replacing the steel rebars with CFRP rebars. In this study, the effects of lightweight coarse aggregate and CFRP rebars on the mechanical and electrical characteristics of concrete were investigated, considering the steel fibers’ incorporation. The lightweight coarse aggregates decreased the density and strength of concrete and increased the electrical conductivity of the concrete, owing to its metallic contents. The steel fibers further increased the electrical conductivity of the lightweight aggregate concrete. These components improved the EM shielding performance, and the steel fibers showed the best performance by increasing shielding effectiveness by at least 23 dB. The CFRP rebars behaved similarly to steel rebars because of their carbon fiber content. When no steel fiber was mixed, the shielding effectiveness increased by approximately 2.8 times with reduced spacing of CFRP rebars. This study demonstrates that lightweight aggregate concrete reinforced with steel fibers exhibits superior mechanical and electrical characteristics for concrete and construction industries.  相似文献

This work aims to investigate the process of obtaining highly filled glass and carbon fiber composites. Composites were manufactured using previously obtained cellulose derived polyol, polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI). As a catalyst, dibutyltin dilaurate 95% and Dabco® 33-LV were used. It was found that the addition of carbon and glass fibers into the polymer matrix causes an increase in the mechanical properties such as impact and flexural strength, Young’s modulus, and hardness of the material. Moreover, the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) showed a significant increase in the material’s storage modulus and rigidity in a wide range of temperatures. The increase in glass transition of soft segments can be noticed due to the limitation of macromolecules mobility in the material. The thermogravimetric analysis showed a four step decomposition, with maximal degradation rate at TmaxII = 320–330 °C and TmaxIII = 395–405 °C, as well as a significant improvement of thermal stability. Analysis of the material structure using a scanning electron microscope showed the presence of material defects such as voids, fiber pull-outs, and agglomerates of both fibers.  相似文献

We used selective laser melting (SLM) and hot pressing of mechanically-alloyed β-type Ti–40Nb powder to fabricate macroporous bulk specimens (solid cylinders). The total porosity, compressive strength, and compressive elastic modulus of the SLM-fabricated material were determined as 17% ± 1%, 968 ± 8 MPa, and 33 ± 2 GPa, respectively. The alloy’s elastic modulus is comparable to that of healthy cancellous bone. The comparable results for the hot-pressed material were 3% ± 2%, 1400 ± 19 MPa, and 77 ± 3 GPa. This difference in mechanical properties results from different porosity and phase composition of the two alloys. Both SLM-fabricated and hot-pressed cylinders demonstrated good in vitro biocompatibility. The presented results suggest that the SLM-fabricated alloy may be preferable to the hot-pressed alloy for biomedical applications, such as the manufacture of load-bearing metallic components for total joint replacements.  相似文献

This paper describes two folded metamaterials based on the Miura-ori fold pattern. The structural mechanics of these metamaterials are dominated by the kinematics of the folding, which only depends on the geometry and therefore is scale-independent. First, a folded shell structure is introduced, where the fold pattern provides a negative Poisson’s ratio for in-plane deformations and a positive Poisson’s ratio for out-of-plane bending. Second, a cellular metamaterial is described based on a stacking of individual folded layers, where the folding kinematics are compatible between layers. Additional freedom in the design of the metamaterial can be achieved by varying the fold pattern within each layer.In this paper, we describe the use of origami for mechanical metamaterials, where the fold patterns introduce kinematic deformation modes that dominate the overall structural response. The geometry and kinematics of two types of folded metamaterial are described: a folded shell structure and a folded cellular metamaterial. The examples presented here are both based on a particular fold geometry: the classic Miura-ori pattern. This pattern has previously been considered for applications, such as deployable solar panels (1), and was observed in the biaxial compression of stiff thin membranes on a soft elastic substrate (2, 3).In recent years, origami has seen a surge in research interest from engineers and physicists. Developments include folded sandwich panel cores (4, 5), origami-inspired stents (6), self-folding membranes (7), and cellular materials made from folded cylinders (8). An important concept is rigid origami, where the fold pattern is modeled as rigid panels connected through frictionless hinges. These assumptions make the study of origami folding a matter of kinematics. Of particular interest here are fold patterns where four fold lines meet at each vertex (so-called degree-4 vertices). Each such vertex has one degree of freedom, a tessellated fold pattern is overconstrained, and folding is only possible under strict geometric conditions. In a landmark paper, Huffman (9) studied rigid folding using spherical geometry; recent work includes the modeling of crease patterns using quaternions (10) and an increased understanding of the foldability conditions for partly folded quadrilateral surfaces (11, 12).In describing the properties of the folded metamaterials, we are here primarily concerned with the deformation kinematics. If required, these models can straightforwardly be extended to include simple constitutive behavior at the fold lines [for instance, elastic (13) or plastic (14) behavior].The paper is structured as follows. First, the Miura-ori unit cell is introduced, because its geometry plays a key role in the mechanical properties of the folded metamaterials. The first such metamaterial is based on a single planar Miura-ori sheet: a folded shell structure. Of particular interest are the shell’s out-of-plane kinematics. Second, a bulk metamaterial is proposed based on the stacking of individual Miura-ori layers, and its folding kinematics are explored. A brief discussion concludes the paper.  相似文献

Flow-rutting is the main distress leading asphalt pavement to undergo premature maintenance, and is produced by the rapid accumulation of shear deformation in asphalt layers under high temperature and heavy loads. The excessive permanent deformation of the asphalt mixture at high temperature is related to the decrease of the material’s stability during the temperature increase and an unfavorable stress state, e.g., low confining pressure and high shear stress, which eventually leads to significant nonlinear viscoplastic behavior. In this research, dynamic modulus tests and repeated loading tests were carried out at 35 °C and 50 °C to analyze the deformation response of materials under a strain amplitude of <200 με and 400~500 μεs, respectively. Based on the in-lab repeated loading tests, the total deformation of the asphalt mixture in each loading and rest cycle was divided into three parts, being elastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic strain, and the measurement of the axial and lateral strain of cylindrical samples was realized with the aid of optical fiber Bragg grating strain sensors. It was found that the experimental index of the ratio between lateral strain and longitudinal strain (RLSLS), derived, but distinguished, from Poisson’s ratio defined limited in elastic strain, can characterize the deformation in viscoelastic and viscoplastic behaviors of the mixes. Furthermore, the indices of dynamic modulus, phase angle, complex Poisson’s ratio, stiffness, and creep rate of four types of mixes containing different volcanic ash fillers and asphalt binders at 35 °C and 50 °C were systematically analyzed by the jointed experiments of modified dynamic modulus tests and repeated loading tests, and their consistent trending to the RLSLS index was obtained.  相似文献

In the present work, the mechanical properties of the DLD-processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy were obtained by tensile tests performed at different temperatures, ranging from 20 °C to 800 °C. Thereby, the process conditions were close to the conditions used to produce large-sized structures using the DLD method, resulting in specimens having the same initial martensitic microstructure. According to the obtained stress curves, the yield strength decreases gradually by 40% when the temperature is increased to 500 °C. Similar behavior is observed for the tensile strength. However, further heating above 500 °C leads to a significant increase in the softening rate. It was found that the DLD-processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy had a Young’s modulus with higher thermal stability than conventionally processed alloys. At 500 °C, the Young’s modulus of the DLD alloy was 46% higher than that of the wrought alloy. The influence of the thermal history on the stress relaxation for the cases where 500 °C and 700 °C were the maximum temperatures was studied. It was revealed that stress relaxation processes are decisive for the formation of residual stresses at temperatures above 700 °C, which is especially important for small-sized parts produced by the DLD method. The coefficient of thermal expansion was investigated up to 1050 °C.  相似文献

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) has the advantages of a high strength-weight ratio and excellent fatigue resistance and has been widely used in aerospace, automotive, civil infrastructure, and other fields. The properties of CFRP materials under high temperatures are a key design issue. This paper presents the quasi-static tensile mechanical properties of unidirectional CFRP plates at temperatures ranging from 20 to 600 °C experimentally. The laser displacement transducer was adopted to capture the in situ displacement of the tested specimen. The results showed that the tensile strength of the CFRP specimen was affected by the high-temperature effect significantly, which dropped 68% and 16% for the 200 and 600 °C, respectively, compared with that of the room temperature. The degradation measured by the laser transducer system was more intensive compared with previous studies. The elastic modulus decreased to about 29% of the room temperature value at 200 °C. With the evaporation of the resin, the failure modes of the CFRP experienced brittle fracture to pullout of the fiber tow. The study provides accurate tensile performance of the CFRP plate under high-temperature exposure, which is helpful for the engineering application.  相似文献

AA2050-T84 alloy is widely used in primary structures of modern transport aircraft. AA2050-T84 is established as a low-density aluminum alloy with improved Young’s modulus, less anisotropy, and temperature-dependent mechanical properties. During flights, loading rate and temperature variation in aircraft engine subsequent parts are commonly observed. The present work focuses on the effect of loading rate and temperature on tensile and fracture properties of the 50 mm thick (2-inch) AA2050-T84 alloy plate. Quasi-static strain rates of 0.01, 0.1, and 1 s−1 at −20 °C, 24 °C and 200 °C are considered. Tensile test results revealed the sensitivity of mechanical properties towards strain rate variations for considered temperatures. The key tensile properties, yield, and ultimate tensile stresses were positive strain rate dependent. However, Young’s modulus and elongation showed negative strain rate dependency. Experimental fracture toughness tests exhibited the lower Plane Strain Fracture Toughness (KIC) at −20 °C compared to 24 °C. Elastic numerical fracture analysis revealed that the crack driving and constraint parameters are positive strain rate dependent and maximum at −20 °C, if plotted and analyzed over the stress ratio. The current results concerning strain rates and temperatures will help in understanding the performance-related issues of AA2050-T84 alloy reported in aircraft applications.  相似文献

Preparing a lightweight yet high-strength bio-based structural material with sustainability and recyclability is highly desirable in advanced applications for architecture, new energy vehicles and spacecraft. In this study, we combined cellulose scaffold and aramid nanofiber (ANF) into a high-performance bulk material. Densification of cellulose microfibers containing ANF and hydrogen bonding between cellulose microfibers and ANF played a crucial role in enhanced physical and mechanical properties of the hybrid material. The prepared material showed excellent tensile strength (341.7 MPa vs. 57.0 MPa for natural wood), toughness (4.4 MJ/m3 vs. 0.4 MJ/m3 for natural wood) and Young’s modulus (24.7 GPa vs. 7.2 GPa for natural wood). Furthermore, due to low density, this material exhibited a superior specific strength of 285 MPa·cm3·g−1, which is remarkably higher than some traditional building materials, such as concrete, alloys. In addition, the cellulose scaffold was infiltrated with ANFs, which also improved the thermal stability of the hybrid material. The facile and top-down process is effective and scalable, and also allows one to fully utilize cellulose scaffolds to fabricate all kinds of advanced bio-based materials.  相似文献

The influence of the thermo-oxidative aging semi-crystalline polyethylene terephthalate process on the thermal and mechanical properties was analysed in the article. For this purpose, PET was aged at 140 °C for 21, 35 and 56 days. The research showed that as a result of aging, the amount of the crystalline phase increases by about 8%, which translates into the properties of the aged material. The glass transition and melt temperature of lamellar crystals formed during first and second crystallisation increase with aging. The mechanical properties of the material were analysed in the temperature range of 25 to 75 °C. The tests were showing an increase in Young’s modulus and a decrease in elongation at the break as a result of aging. This phenomenon was particularly visible during tests at 75 °C and during the morphological observation of the fracture surface, where the fracture character of the material changes from ductile to brittle. In the case of the material aged for the longest time, the temperature has a negligible influence on the elongation at break.  相似文献

The effect of high temperatures on rock’s thermophysical and mechanical properties is critical to the design of underground geotechnical applications. The current work investigates the impact of temperature on rhyolitic turf rock’s physical and mechanical properties. Intact cylindrical core rock samples were heated to different temperatures (200, 400, 600, and 800 °C). The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and elastic modulus of unheated and heated samples were determined as important mechanical properties. In addition, the effect of temperature on the physical properties of rhyolite rock (density, color, and absorption) was investigated in conjunction with its microstructural properties. The hardening of the rhyolitic rock samples was observed below 600 °C, at which point the UCS and elastic modulus decreased to 78.0% and 75.9%, respectively, at 800 °C. The results also show that heating does not significantly affect the density and volume of permeable pore space, but a color change can be observed at 400 °C and above. A microscopic analysis shows the change in microstructural properties of rhyolite rock after heating to 600 °C. Furthermore, the SEM observations of heated materials show structural particle displacements and microcracking, leading to apparent surface cracks.  相似文献

When drilling Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) materials, achieving acceptable hole quality is challenging while balancing productivity and tool wear. Numerical models are important tools for the optimization of drilling CFRP materials in terms of material removal rate and hole quality. In this research, a macro-Finite Element (FE) model was developed to accurately predict the effect of drill tip geometry on hole entry and exit quality. The macro-mechanical material model was developed treating the Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) as an Equivalent Homogeneous Material (EHM). To reduce computational time, a numerical analysis was performed to investigate the influence of mass scaling, bulk viscosity, friction, strain rate strengthening, and cohesive surface modelling. A consideration must be made to minimize the dynamic effects in the FE prediction. The experimental work was carried out to investigate the effect of drill tip geometry on drilling forces and hole quality and to validate the FE results. The geometry of the drills used were either double-point angle or a “candle-stick” profile. The 3D drilling model accurately predicts the thrust force and hole quality generated by the two different drills. The results highlight the improvement in predicted results with the inclusion of cohesive surface modelling. The force signature profiles between the simulated and experimental results were similar. Furthermore, the difference between the predicted thrust force and those measured were less than 9%. When drilling with a double-angle drill tip, the inter-ply damage was reduced. This trend was observed in FE prediction.  相似文献

Although Miura origami has excellent planar expansion characteristics and good mechanical properties, its congenital flaws, e.g., open sections leading to weak out-of-plane stiffness and constituting the homogenization of the material, and resulting in limited design freedom, should also be taken seriously. Herein, two identical Miura sheets, made of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite, were bonded to form a tubular structure with closed sections, i.e., an origami tube. Subsequently, the dynamic performances, including the nature frequency and the dynamic displacement response, of the designed origami tubes were extensively investigated through numerical simulations. The outcomes revealed that the natural frequency and corresponding dynamic displacement response of the structure can be adjusted in a larger range by varying the geometric and material parameters, which is realized by combining origami techniques and the composite structures’ characteristics. This work can provide new ideas for the design of light-weight and high-mechanical-performance structures.  相似文献
