Human Rickettsia felis infection, Canary Islands, Spain   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We report the first cases of human infection by Rickettsia felis in the Canary Islands. Antibodies against R. felis were found in 5 adsorbed serum samples from 44 patients with clinically suspected rickettsiosis by Western blot serology. Fleas from 1 patient's dog were positive for R. felis by polymerase chain reaction.  相似文献

Rickettsia felis is an emergent pathogen belonging to transitional group rickettsiae. First described in 1990, R. felis infections have been reported to occur worldwide in fleas, mammals, and humans. Because clinical signs of the illness are similar to those of murine typhus and other febrile illnesses such as dengue, the infection in humans is likely underestimated. R. felis has been found throughout the world in several types of ectoparasites; cat fleas appear to be the most common vectors. R. felis infection should be considered an emergent threat to human health.  相似文献

Rickettsia typhi and R. felis, etiologic agents of murine typhus and fleaborne spotted fever, respectively, were detected in Oriental rat fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis) collected from rodents and shrews in Java, Indonesia. We detected Rickettsia felis DNA in Ctenocephalides felis and Bartonella quintana DNA in 3 Pulex irritans fleas taken from a pet Cercopithecus cephus monkey in Gabon, sub-Saharan Africa. This is the first report of B. quintana in the human flea.  相似文献

We report, for the first time, serologic evidence of Rickettsia felis and R. aeschlimannii infections acquired in Tunisia from 1998 to 2003. We found that most patients with antibodies against both R. conorii and R. typhi had serologic evidence of R. felis infection.  相似文献

A cryptosporidiosis survey showed the presence of Cryptosporidium hominis, C. parvum, C. canis, and C. felis in 25, 7, 1, and 1 HIV-positive persons from Jamaica, respectively; 1 person had both C. hominis and C. felis. Multilocus sequence typing indicated the presence of a homogeneous but geographically distinct C. hominis population in Jamaica.  相似文献

Rickettsia typhi (prevalence 1.9%) and R. felis (prevalence 24.8%) DNA were detected in rat fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis) collected from mice on Oahu Island, Hawaii. The low prevalence of R. typhi on Oahu suggests that R. felis may be a more common cause of rickettsiosis than R. typhi in Hawaii.  相似文献

An infection with Cryptosporidium felis in an HIV-positive man from Italy was successfully treated with paromomycin, despite the patient's having a CD4+ cell count of 31/mL. Fourteen cases of human infection with C. felis have been described, all in the past 3 years, emphasizing the public health importance of Cryptosporidium parasites other than C. parvum.  相似文献

The compatibility, safety and interaction on antibody induction of a combined vaccine application were assessed. Specific pathogen-free cats were vaccinated with either a modified live virus vaccine containing feline calici- (FCV), herpes- (FHV-1), parvovirus (FPV) and Chlamydophila felis (C. felis), an adjuvanted recombinant feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) vaccine or both vaccines in one syringe. After combined application, FeLV ELISA antibody titres were unaltered, However antibody production based on indirect immunofluorescence assay was remarkably enhanced for FCV and was at selected time points also enhanced for FHV-1 and C. felis but diminished for FPV. The use of these vaccines in combination was safe and will simplify vaccination schedules in veterinary practice.  相似文献

In June 2000, suspected cases of Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) occurred in Coronel Fabriciano Municipality, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Pooled fleas collected near two fatal cases contained rickettsial DNA. The nucleotide sequence alignment of the 391-bp segment of the 17-kDa protein gene showed that the products were identical to each other and to the R. felis 17-kDa gene, confirming circulation of R. felis in Brazil.  相似文献

Recombinant Helicobacter pylori urease (rUre) has been shown to confer protection against challenge with Helicobacter felis in mice. The purpose of the present study was to examine duration of the immune response and long-term protective efficacy of immunization with rUre. Swiss Webster mice were orally immunized four times at weekly intervals with 100 microg rUre plus 5 microg heat-labile enterotoxin of Escherichia coli (LT) adjuvant, or with LT only. At 4, 10, 20 or 40 weeks post immunization, 25 rUre-immunized mice and control mice were challenged with H. felis and sacrificed at 2 or 10 weeks post-challenge. H. felis infection was assessed by gastric urease assay and by histology. Anti-H. pylori urease specific antibody levels were measured in serum and saliva both pre- and post-challenge. Over the 40 week time period, the infection rates in rUre-immunized mice were significantly lower than those in controls (p < 0.05) as assessed by gastric urease activity. Protection ranged from 79 100% at 2 weeks post-challenge and 63-78% at 10 weeks post-challenge. Gastric bacterial density in rUre-immunized mice was significantly lower than that of controls (p < 0.03) as determined by histologic assessment. Anti-urease antibody levels remained elevated in the serum and mucosal compartments at 39 weeks following immunization. This study shows that immunization with rUre plus LT results in long-lasting protective immunity against challenge with H. felis.  相似文献

目的应用Y型嗅觉仪,建立蚤类对宿主动物气味选择的测定方法,并研究猫栉首蚤、印鼠客蚤和缓慢细蚤对大白鼠和小白鼠的选择行为,为探究不同蚤种对不同宿主动物的特异性选择和了解"蚤类-宿主动物或人-相关传染病"的关系提供理论依据。方法以印鼠客蚤为试虫,用Y型嗅觉仪测定风速、Y型管臂管的几何位置、光照对其选择行为的影响,以猫栉首蚤、印鼠客蚤和缓慢细蚤成蚤为试虫分别测定对大白鼠和小白鼠的选择行为。结果在测定的20min内,当空气流速为0.6~1.5L/min时,Y型管臂管的几何位置和测定环境的光照(30W日光灯)与黑暗在印鼠客蚤对小白鼠的选择行为中没有显著影响。猫栉首蚤对大白鼠气味具有显著的选择性,而印鼠客蚤和缓慢细蚤对大白鼠和小白鼠气味的选择性差异无统计学意义。结论可以用Y型嗅觉仪测定蚤类对宿主动物的选择行为。通过研究蚤的选择行为可以了解其宿主特异性,进一步分析"蚤类-宿主动物或人-相关传染病"的相关关系。  相似文献

TO THE EDITOR: Fleas (order Siphonaptera) are obligate hematophagous insects. They are laterally flattened, holometabolous, and wingless ectoparasites. More than 2,500 species of flea, belonging to 16 families and 238 genera, have been described. A minority of these genera live in close association with humans (synanthropic), including fleas of these species: Pulex irritans, Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides canis, Xenopsylla cheopis, Nosopsyllus fasciatus, Echidnophaga gallinacea, and Tunga penetrans (1). Many fleas are capable of transmitting the following pathogens to their hosts: bacteria (e.g., Rickettsia typhi, R. felis, Yersinia pestis, and many Bartonella spp.); viruses (e.g., myxoma virus); protozoa (e.g., Trypanosoma spp.); or helminths (e.g., Hymenolepis spp.) (2). Ctenocephalides spp. fleas are of special interest as main reservoirs and vectors of R. felis, because this agent causes an emerging disease, fleaborne rickettsiosis. The distribution and prevalence of this disease have not been well studied. Symptoms of this disease range from mild to moderate and include fever, cutaneous rash, and sometimes an inoculation eschar (3,4). R. felis can also infect at least 10 other species of arthropods, including P. irritans fleas, trombiculid and mesostygmata mites, hard and soft ticks, and booklice (5,6).  相似文献

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is a relatively new diagnosed illness with clinical signs of self-limiting regional lymphadenopathy accompanied by symptoms of fever and malaise, to encephalopathy and neuropathy, occurring after a cat scratch or flea bite. Bartonella henselae is now accepted as the etiologic agent of CSD. From January 1994 to September 1998, 412 patients were evaluated for suspect CSD in Italy. Sera were tested for antibodies to B. henselae by a commercially available indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA), based on B. henselae-infected Vero-cells as the antigen substrate. Of the 412 patients, 26 (6.3%) were considered positive having titers of immunoglobulin G (IgG) to B. henselae of 64 or higher. In these patients CSD was indeed confirmed by either histopathologic examination of lymph nodes biopsy or fourfold raise in antibody titers. Nevertheless, sera were tested by IFA for Afipia felis and one showed a double reactivity to B. henselae and A. felis. Finally, three sera, negative to B. henselae serology, were positive to A. felis. Three hundred and eighty-six patients received alternative diagnoses. One hundred and twenty-five serum samples from control subjects were negative by IFA for either B. henselae or A. felis. Moreover, a cross-reactivity with sera from patients affected by other diseases was not observed. Our study shows that the ascertained cases of CSD are etiologically determined by B. henselae, IFA assay is confirmed as a useful tool in the laboratory diagnosis and, over a 5 years period of study, the incidence of CSD in Italy has been low.  相似文献

Ecologic and economic factors, as well as changes in human behavior, have resulted in the emergence of new and the reemergence of existing but forgotten infectious diseases during the past 20 years. Flea-borne disease organisms (e.g., Yersinia pestis, Rickettsia typhi, R. felis, and Bartonella henselae) are widely distributed throughout the world in endemic-disease foci, where components of the enzootic cycle are present. However, flea-borne diseases could reemerge in epidemic form because of changes in vector-host ecology due to environmental and human behavior modification. The changing ecology of murine typhus in southern California and Texas over the past 30 years is a good example of urban and suburban expansion affecting infectious disease outbreaks. In these areas, the classic rat-flea-rat cycle of R. typhi has been replaced by a peridomestic animal cycle involving, e.g., free-ranging cats, dogs, and opossums and their fleas. In addition to the vector-host components of the murine typhus cycle, we have uncovered a second typhuslike rickettsia, R. felis. This agent was identified from the blood of a hospitalized febrile patient and from opossums and their fleas. We reviewed the ecology of R. typhi and R. felis and present recent data relevant to the vector biology, immunology, and molecular characterization and phylogeny of flea-borne rickettsioses.  相似文献

Spotted fever group and typhus group rickettsioses in humans, South Korea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The presence of the nucleic acid of the spotted fever group (SPG) and typhus group (TG) rickettsiae was investigated in 200 serum specimens seropositive for SFG rickettsiae by multiplex-nested polymerase chain reaction with primers derived from the rickettsial outer membrane protein B gene. The DNA of SFG, TG, or both rickettsiae was amplified in the 24 serum specimens, and sequence analysis showed Rickettsia conorii, R. japonica, and R. felis in the specimens. R. conorii and R. typhi were found in 7 serum specimens, which indicated the possibility of dual infection in these patients. These findings suggest that several kinds of rickettsial diseases, including boutonneuse fever, rickettsialpox, R. felis infection, and Japanese spotted fever, as well as scrub typhus and murine typhus, are occurring in Korea.  相似文献

Routine typing of 14 469 isolates from human cryptosporidiosis cases between 2000 and 2008 revealed that 7439 (51·4%) were Cryptosporidium (C.) hominis, 6372 (44·0%) C. parvum, 51 (0·4%) both C. hominis and C. parvum, 443 (3·1%) were not typable and 164 (1·1%) were other Cryptosporidium species or genotypes. Of the latter, 109 were C. meleagridis, 38 C. felis, 11 C. ubiquitum, one C. canis, two horse, two novel and one skunk genotype. C. hominis monkey genotype and C. cuniculus were identified in a separate study. Patients with unusual infections were older than those with C. hominis (P<0·01) or C. parvum (P<0·01) and were more likely to be immunocompromised (Fisher's exact P<0·01). Forty-one percent of unusual cases had travelled abroad, mainly to the Indian subcontinent. Significant risk factors in those with unusual species were travel abroad (C. meleagridis, P<0·01), being immunocompromised (C. felis, Fisher's exact P=0·02), and contact with cats (C. felis, Fisher's exact P=0·02).  相似文献

Faecal oral spread is claimed by many to be the mode of transmission of the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori. This idea is based not on experimental data but because the epidemiology of H. pylori infection resembles that of other pathogens known to be spread by the faecal-oral route. This is in spite of the observation that no-one has been successful in culturing H. pylori from human stool. In this study, a series of transmission experiments are reported on animals infected with the gastric spirilla, Helicobacter felis and 'Gastrospirillum hominis'. Germfree mice and rats infected with H. felis did not transmit their infection to uninoculated mice despite prolonged contact in the same cage nor could the bacterium be isolated from their intestinal contents. This was confirmed in specific pathogen free mice where infected dams did not pass the helicobacter to their progeny. Similarly, mice infected with a human isolate of 'Gastrospirillum hominis' did not transmit the infection while in close contact with uninoculated mice. In contrast, in a limited series of experiments, both H. pylori and H. felis were transmitted from infected gnotobiotic Beagle puppies to uninfected animals in the same enclosure. In addition, the gastric mucus from a cat with indigenous 'Gastrospirillum'-like organisms was infectious for mice, whereas faecal content from the same animal was not. It is suggested that the difference between the murine and canine experiments is that the dogs are more likely to have oral-oral contact than rodents. Unlike dogs, mice and rats do not vomit and are coprophagous. It is concluded that the case for faecal-oral spread of Helicobacter species is 'not proven' and that the inter-oral route is more likely.  相似文献
